we are selling St. Joseph Sweatshirts. These plush
sweatshirts (in navy blue, forest green, black and now in
red, grey and purple, too) are emblazoned with our Parish
name in English and Spanish (stitched not ink-stamped).
They will keep you warm and proclaim our faith to all. On-
ly $22 each. Also, we have T-shirts for $10 each, mugs
for $5 each. The net proceeds from these sales will go
to the “Raise our Roof” fund to put a new roof on our
Church. So buy a sweatshirt, T-shirt and mug for yourself
or someone you love (they are perfect for Christmas gift-
giving). On sale after all Masses.

visiting local cemeteries and blessing the graves of our

Finally, our Vigil Mass on Saturday, November 2

pm will be celebrated especially for all those who have died
and been buried from our Parish during the past year. We
will begin Mass by calling out the names of the deceased
and tolling our church bell in their memory. Then family
and parish members will bring lighted candles to our altar to
remember them at every Mass during the month of Novem-
ber. We invite you to bring FRAMED PHOTOGRAPHS of
your deceased loved ones and we will place them
around our altar, and pray for them during our Novem-
ber Masses. Please bring your FRAMED PHOTOS to

DIOCESAN DEVELOPMENT DRIVE UP-
DATE: We are now at the 73% level of
pledges and gifts received toward our Par-
ish DDD Goal. This is great news, but the
challenging part is that we have received
pledges and gifts from only 186 families/
households (out of 3,081 registered). Now
is the time to come to the aid of our Parish.
We have only two months left to meet our Quota for this
year’s Drive. Won’t you help us out? Call or come by the
Office and make a pledge (payable over time) or a one-
time gift. The future of the Church is depending on you!

SÁBADO 2 DE NOVIEMBRE ES LA MEMORIA

cos pueden asistir a misa tres veces en este día y recibir la

tra parroquia durante el año pasado. Comenzaremos la
misa anunciando los nombres de los fallecidos y tocando la
campana de nuestra iglesia en su memoria. Luego, los
miembros de la familia y la parroquia traerán velas encen-
didas a nuestro altar para recordarlos en cada misa duran-
te el mes de noviembre. Le invitamos a traer UNA FOTO-
GRAFÍA ENMARCADA de sus seres queridos fallecidos
y los colocaremos alrededor de nuestro altar, y re-
zaremos por ellos durante nuestras Misas de

NIDAD DE TODOS LOS SANTOS. Es un Día Santo
de Obligación, lo que significa que todos los católicos
están obligados a asistir a Misa a menos que existan ra-
zones serias para no hacerlo. Tendremos misa el viernes
1 de noviembre a las 8:30 a.m., a las 12:05 p.m. y a las
5:30 p.m. (en inglés) y a las 7:00 p.m. (en español).
Venga y celebre la fiesta de todos los santos, aquellos
que han "llegado" a la gloria celestial.
PLEASE PRAY FOR THE REPOSE OF THE SOUL OF
ALEXIS GANDARA, the nephew of our Co-RE Director,
Maria Gandara. Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, he immigrat-
ed with his family to the United States when he was only
seven years old. He graduated from Central High School,
and worked for over 11 years as a chef at Ruby River
Steakhouse in Riverdale. He had a passion for restoring
old trucks and cars. He loved being with his family, cook-
ing for them and dancing at fiestas. He was a blessing to
his parents, taking his mother wherever she needed to go,
and working with his Dad on one of his many projects. He
died of cancer at the age of 26 and his Funeral Mass was
celebrated Thursday, October 17
th
. He will be greatly
missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace!

beef and the winner will automatically qualify for our final
Raffle for a freezer for storing the beef. All proceeds from
ticket sales will go to our “RAISE OUR ROOF CAM-

KNOW YOUR FAITH: THE SUNDAY CELEBRATION.
A second major theme surrounding the weekly celebration
of Sunday is that it is a day of rest. However, it did not be-
come popular to observe Sunday as a day of rest until the

century when the economic lives of Christians began to
improve. Prior to the mid-third century, many members of
the Church were slaves or otherwise required to work on
Sunday. Also, beginning in the 3
rd
century, Roman civil
authorities began to see a human need for a “break” from
the monotony of work. On March 3, 321, the Emperor Con-
stantine ordered a weekly holiday on the “venerable day of
the sun.” While he was probably motivated by his devotion
to the pagan cult of the sun, his decree did give the special
Christian day the same privilege enjoyed by pagans. Also,
it became popular to understand the Ten Commandments
from a Christian point of view, and a Church discipline of
Sunday rest became common as a result. In 589, the
Council of Narbonne called for severe punishment, includ-
ing whipping, for anyone who worked on Sunday. And in
the year 789, the Emperor Charlemagne forbade work on
Sunday as a violation of the Third Commandment. Eventu-
ally, this royal decree crossed over into universal church
law. There never was consensus on the kind of work for-
bidden on Sunday. Generally, it was thought to include
unnecessary work, or work that prevented one from attend-
ing Mass. The emphasis was on physical work. The pre-
sent law of the Church is very positive: ”On Sundays and
Holy Days of Obligation the faithful are bound...to abstain
from those labors and business concerns which impede the
worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper ot
the Lord’s Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and
body” (Canon 1247) (to be continued).

CONOZCA SU FE: LA CELEBRACIÓN DEL DOMINGO.
Un segundo tema importante que rodea la celebración
semanal del domingo es que es un día de descanso. Sin
embargo, no se hizo popular observar el domingo como un
día de descanso hasta el siglo IV, cuando la vida económi-
ca de los cristianos comenzó a mejorar. Antes de medi-
ados del siglo III, muchos miembros de la Iglesia eran
esclavos o tenían que trabajar el domingo. Además, a par-
tir del siglo III, las autoridades civiles romanas comen-
zaron a ver la necesidad humana de un "descanso" de la

POR FAVOR OREN POR EL DESCANSO DEL ALMA
DE ALEXIS GANDARA, sobrino de nuestra Directora
Co-RE, Maria Gandara. Nacido en Chihuahua, México,
emigró con su familia a los Estados Unidos cuando solo
tenía siete años. Se graduó de Central High School y tra-
bajó durante más de 11 años como chef en Ruby River
Steakhouse en Riverdale. Le apasionaba restaurar cami-
onetas viejas y automóviles. Le encantaba estar con su
familia, cocinar para ellos y bailar en fiestas. Fue una
bendición para sus padres, llevando a su madre a donde
ella necesitara y trabajando con su papá en uno de sus
muchos proyectos. Murió de cáncer a los 26 años y su
misa fúnebre se celebró el jueves 17 de octubre. Lo ex-
trañaremos mucho todos los que lo conocieron. ¡Que
descanse en paz!
A LOT OF PEOPLE STRESS OUT OVER THE
CELEBRATION OF HALLOWEEN.
It originated in pre- Christian times and there is no direct
connection between Halloween and any Christian tradition.
The Celts in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Brittany in north-
ern France celebrated New Year’s Day on November 1
st
.
Under the influence of the religious leadership of the Dru-
ids, a festival was held the evening before to honor Sam-
hain, the lord of death. It ushered in the winter darkness
and cold, symbols of human death, The Celts believed
that Samhain allowed the souls of the dead to return to
their earthly homes on this night. However, those who
were sinners were imprisoned in the bodies of animals and
could be freed from heaven through gifts and sacrificial
offerings. The only way to be safe from these animals was
to pass as one of them by dressing up like them. They also
could be bribed by giving them treats (hence, the traditions
of wearing costumes and of trick-or-treating were born).
Also, on October 31
st
, people would extinguish their hearth
fires and the Druids built large sacred bonfires, often on
hilltops. From these fires, people ignited a new year’s fire
for their home. When the descendants of the Celts (the
Irish) brought their customs to the New World, they, too, lit
fires on Halloween and people would take some of the sa-
cred fire to their homes in hollowed-out pumpkins, rutaba-
gas or potatoes (hence, the tradition of the jack-o-lantern
was born).
MUCHAS PERSONAS SE ESTRESAN DE MÁS SOBRE
LA CELEBRACIÓN DE HALLOWEEN. Se originó en
tiempos precristianos y no existe una conexión directa en-
tre Halloween y cualquier tradición cristiana. Los celtas
en Gales, Escocia, Irlanda y Bretaña en el norte de Fran-
cia celebraron el día de Año Nuevo el 1 de noviembre. Ba-
