A leper came to Jesus and begged him: “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately. Mark 1:40-42

Today’s readings present a contrast between “Jesus’ way” and the “old way.” An example of the old way is the law given to Moses and Aaron about leprosy: the leper was unclean and cast out of the community. Jesus’ way is the opposite: the leper is reached out to, touched, and fi nally cured. Nor ought we think of the “old way” as restricted to the days of Moses and Aaron, or even to the “old” testament. The diff erence between the old way and Jesus’ way arises in our own lives. We still choose, every day, to live in our old way or in Jesus’ way. Jesus dared to touch a leper, disregarding the old way. The leper then was changed forever. He felt a calling. He couldn’t keep himself from proclaiming that he had been touched by Jesus (even though Jesus told him not to!). Once Jesus touches us, we are called to proclaim his way.Copyright © J. S. YA @ OLS!Our parish is blessed with many young adults who have stepped up in the past year to serve Jesus with their loving “yes.”

Our lifestyle this past year, while restricted and unusual, has brought some unexpected blessings. One of them is the number of young adults who have answered the call to help in new ways. We have more young adults in ministry now than ever before as Religious Education catechists, ushers, lectors and teachers at Notre Dame School.

“Volunteering has gifted me with a Catholic community I have always wanted and needed,” says Mixty Espinoza, an usher since June’s re-opening. “Surrounding myself with this community has shown me how important being active in my church community is for my own growing faith and the faith of others.”

“I like helping teens prepare for Confi rmation,” shares Zac Gonzalez Jr., a Confi rmation Catechist, “because I like seeing them after their sacrament and seeing how they grow as a person years later.” With Zac's girlfriend Monica Valle, they are a great catechist team!

Jorden Angel and his wife Andrea Esquivel have both served as ushers. Jorden shares, “This opportunity brings me closer to God by serving him. It gives me satisfaction to volunteer so others can live out their faith by attending Mass.”

Stephanie Berberabe and Kirsten Koehnke, both attend Westmont College. They met on the basketball team and when they learned they were both Catholic, they were fast friends and started attending Mass together. “We were both looking for ways to engage in our Catholic faith more deeply and thought serving the Church would be a good place to start. We found ourselves welcomed into an amazing Catholic community of Our Lady of Sorrows!”

What’s next? We are preparing for a formal Young Adult Ministry (for those between the ages of 18 and 39, single or married). We welcome your input, ideas and what you’re looking for when it comes to connecting your faith with friends! If you’d like to be part of a core leadership team, please contact Marissa Carroll at 805-965-1033.

Jorden dice “Esta

oportunidad me acerca a Dios al servirlo a Él. Me satisface ser voluntario para que otros

continúen en su fe asistiendo a misa.”

Stephanie Berberabe y Kirsten Koehnke asisten a Westmont College.

Celebrating The Presentation of Our Lord

Notre Dame School students participated in a Candlemas prayer service on February 2, 2021. Each received a tealight blessed by Fr Cesar at Mass to take home and light with their families.

Students also participated in a Santa Barbara-wide Catholic Schools Mass with Bishop Barron who talked about the Presentation of the Lord in his homily.

Students prayed together in class and attended Mass together as a school. What a blessing to be a Catholic School student!

Did You Know?Tips to handle teen datingMost teenagers are eager to date, but parents may be less eager to reach that milestone. Preparing yourself — and your teenager — for smart, safe dating is key. As a family, set rules, and enforce them. Discuss who they can see, what activities are allowed or forbidden, how late they can stay out. Make sure your teenager is clear on how to handle himself or herself in tough situations, and that they have an “out” if they need one in you or another trusted adult. Honesty and specifi city will make these conversations more impactful, and more likely to stick with your teen. For more tips on handling teen dating, read the VIRTUS article “Preparing for the Day Your Teen Starts Dating” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
