Greetings Hornets,
I hope that all our Roswell High School Community has had
a great summer.
The 2018-2019 school year was a great one for Roswell
High School as our students, faculty, and staff, celebrated
many accomplishments in Academics, the Fine Arts, and
Athletics. These achievements could not have happened
without the support of our community. This includes local
groups, such as the Roswell Rotary and the Roswell Kiwa-
nis Club, the City of Roswell, and, most importantly, the
support of the parents of our students. Whether it is through
a booster club, attending a meeting, corresponding with
teachers, or simply having conversations with their students
about the importance of what goes on at school, our parents
are a key component to the success of Roswell High School.
The Roswell PTSA is at the forefront of engaging parents
(and grandparents) at Roswell High School. Our PTSA
works hard to staff volunteers, organize and award PTSA
grants for teachers, feed the faculty and staff (especially
when they are at school late for an event), and so much
more.
As you may be aware, effective and timely communication
is the foundation of the Roswell High School Strategic
Plan. Good communication results from the outstanding
partnership between our school and our parent organiza-
tions, especially the PTSA. Thank you to the PTSA parents
who worked to compile this newsletter and thank you for
taking the time to read it. Inside this newsletter is some im-
portant information that you can use to help your student
have a great school year.
With the support of the Roswell community, our school is
poised to have another great school year in 2019-2020!
Thank you to all of you for everything
you do for our students.
Enjoy the remainder of your summer
and I will see you in August,
Robert Shaw, Ed.D.

Staff/Volunteers cannot accept drop off items
for students to pick up in the front office or at
the Greeter Desk.
Conflict Resolution: Parents who have con-
cerns about a classroom issue should contact
the teacher via e-mail or phone. If no resolu-
tion can be found or if there are still additional
concerns, contact the department chairperson.
If the situation is still unresolved, contact the
appropriate grade level Assistant Principal.
Department Heads and email addresses can be
found on the RHS website under STAFF.
Dress Code: Students are responsible for
knowing the dress code which is available in
the Student Handbook on the RHS website.
Dress code violations include, but are not lim-
ited to, wearing clothes with an inappropriate
advertisement or language; shorts, skirts, and
dresses shorter than two inches below the fin-
gertips; exposed undergarments; form-fitting
clothes; sagging, bagging, and dragging trou-
sers; pajamas.
P.E. Lockers: The cost is $5.00 per semester

dents are not allowed to leave campus for
lunch. Outside guests are not allowed to join
students for lunch. Students are not allowed to
use meal delivery services.
Searches: Student lockers, desks and all
school and classroom storage areas are school
property and remain under the control of the
school at all times. These areas are not private.
Periodic general inspections of these areas
may be
conducted by school authorities for any reason
at any time without notice and without student
consent. If a search yields illegal or unauthor-
ized materials, such materials will be turned
over in person to the Chief of the Fulton Coun-
ty School Police, School Police Officer, or
proper legal authorities for disposition.
Student ID Cards: Students receive a new
photo ID card each school year. ID cards will
be sent to the school once school photos are
taken in the beginning of the year by the
school photographer.
School Closings: In case of inclement weath-
er, check local radio and TV stations and the

leave, the student will show the teacher the
checkout pass. The student must check in and
out through the Attendance Office, not the
clinic. Failure to check in and out through the
Attendance Office may result in disciplinary
action. There will be no walk-in checkouts
after 3:15 pm.

Tardiness: A student is tardy when he/she
arrives to school after the beginning of the
official school day OR is not in his/her as-

dues are responsible for the individual costs
of all senior activities, including cap and
gown.
Cap and Gown: Order on Class Dues Form
or from www.gabalfour.com and will be
available for pick up in the front office about
six weeks before graduation.
Graduation Announcements: Can be or-
dered at www.gabalfour.com.
Graduation Events: Information on Gradua-

ior Profile Sheet which can be downloaded
from Student Services site when you scroll
down and click on the “12” circle and it is
listed in the column titled “Roswell Info.”

Attention Potential College Athletes!
Rising juniors who are prospective Division 1 or
Division 2 athletes should register with the NCAA
this summer
Students may register at any time, but we recommend
that they register before their junior year. The regis-
tration website is http://www.eligibilitycenter.org.
The NCAA Eligibility Center will evaluate a student’s
academic credentials once the following information
has been received, and the student has had his/her
status requested by an NCAA member institution:
Completed online registration
Fee payment
SAT and/or ACT test score on file from the
respective testing agency (not from Roswell
High School)
Transcript(s) from all schools or programs
attended (request via Parchment.com)
In High School you don’t go to TAG
Science or TAG Social Studies: TAG is a seminar that you take once a
week. This seminar will cover a topic of inter-
est to you (past subjects include Oceanogra-
phy, Ghost Hunters, or Photography) and will
also assist you in developing both short and
long term goals for high school.
TAG opportunities include AP classes, di-
rected studies, and internships. A TAG teach-
er will explain these options in more detail in
your first TAG class.
How do I know if I’m in TAG?
If you were in TAG in middle or elemen-
tary school in Georgia, you are still in
TAG, even if you haven’t participated in a
year or more. If you’re not sure, one of the
TAG teachers can help you find out.
When do I start my TAG seminar?
TAG registration typically takes place
during the second week of the semester in
the mornings and during all four lunch
periods. Registration is announced during
morning announcements.
What is good about being in TAG?
Students can sign up for TAG seminars
with friends in all grades and on a topic
that they are interested in.
It shows colleges that students are willing
to go beyond a typical school day.
Opportunities include career internships
during the school day in a real workplace,
like a surgeon’s office or a law practice.
Students can take a directed study class,
spending one period every day studying a
subject they really want to research. Stu-
dents have studied fashion design, comput-
er programming, piano, and more
Students have an advisor who can assist
them in developing a four-year academic
plan, making course and career selections,
and preparing for admission to col-
lege. TAG advisors will make every effort
to assist students by working with them,
their parents, and/or their teachers.

Notification to Parents of the Screening and Referral Process for Gifted Services
New Authorization to Give Medication Forms
and Care Plans must be completed EACH
SCHOOL YEAR. Please make sure the
school has CURRENT telephone numbers for
parents and all authorized alternate contacts
(if you are unable to pick up your child should
they become sick during the school day).
Please note that we will not allow a seriously
ill or injured child to drive, walk, or ride the
bus home. Please update any changes with
your child’s health conditions and their asso-
ciated Care Plans (diabetics, severe allergies,
etc.) The clinic is open every day from 8:00
am to 4:00 pm and is located next to the Stu-
dent Services Office.
MEDICATIONS
It is best for students to take medication be-
fore or after school; however if it is necessary
to take a medication during school hours the
following policies apply to Roswell High
School students.
Your child may carry over-the-counter medi-
cations and does not need to complete a medi-
cation form. Medications MUST be in the
original containers and under NO circum-
stances be shared. This privilege can be re-
voked at any time if a student is not comply-
ing with the medication policy. The clinic
does not supply any over-the-counter medica-
tions and can not dispense any unless they are
supplied by the parent with a signed Authori-
zation to Give Medications form. If you need
or choose the clinic to administer, supervise,
or store any medications, an authorization
form must be completed.
Fulton County Board of Education and state
laws prohibit RHS from providing any medi-
cation. This includes emergency medications;
(Benadryl, EpiPens, and asthma rescue inhal-
ers) so please make sure your child has any
needed medications should an emergency
occur. Your child IS ALLOWED AND EN-
COURAGED to carry his asthma inhaler,
EpiPen and/ or Benadryl DAILY. Please
make sure your child’s name is on all medica-
tion in the event it becomes lost or misplaced.
All prescription medications must be kept in
the clinic and will not be administered unless
an Authorization to Give Medication form is
completed with the health care provider’s
signature and the parent’s signature. They
also need to be in the original containers.
Although we want your student to return to
school as soon as possible after a medication
change, it is for the safety of your child that
we ask that you observe him for any unsus-
pected reactions and report it to the prescrib-
ing health care provider.
INFORMATION AND FORMS
This information is a snapshot of the county
policy. Please visit the Student Health Ser-
vices section of the Fulton County Schools
website for more information on the county
policies and procedures and to download
forms. http://www.fultonschools.org/Page/790
IMPORTANT TO NOTE
Students need to be fever free for 24 hours
without any fever reducing medication (Advil
or Tylenol) before returning to school. Under
some circumstances a note from your physi-
cian may be necessary for your child to return
to school. Whenever there is a doubt about
sending your child to school, please consult
your physician before doing so. You also may
call the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta 24-
hour nurse advice line at 404-785-KIDS for
advice when your child’s doctor’s office is
not open.

We look forward to a healthy and safe school
year and are here to help with your child’s
health or medical needs. Please contact us if

The consideration for gifted services may be re-
ported or automatic as defined by the GaDOE
Resource Manual for Gifted Education Ser-
vices. The Fulton County School System screens
all students for eligibility for gifted services twice
a year and uses a systematic approach to identify
highly capable students who may qualify for gifted
services.
The gifted teacher routinely reviews available data
to refer students for further assessment. Students
meeting either the automatic screening OR the
classroom screening criteria AND have supporting
data gathered from test history, products, and/or
advanced content levels are referred for additional
testing to determine gifted eligibility.
I. Automatic Screening- identifies students who
score at specified levels on a norm-referenced test
as defined in the GaDOE Resource Manual for
Gifted Education Services, for further assessment
to determine eligibility for gifted services. At the
beginning of the school year, TAG teachers review
existing test data.
Standardized Tests
Students must have minimally a combination of
scores that include > 85th percentile and > 90th
percentile in two of the three areas on a standard-
ized, nationally norm-referenced achievement
test: Total Reading, Total Math, and Complete
Battery.
FastBridge Assessment – (Fall 2018 Assessment)
Grade K- Students must score 90% or greater on
system’s FastBridge assessment for Math and
Reading. No supporting data is needed.
Grade 1- 8: Students must score 90% or greater on
system’s FastBridge assessment for Math or Read-
ing. Supporting data is needed.
Acceleration Assessments- Students must score
80% or greater on system’s Acceleration Assess-
ment in:
Grades K: English/Language Arts and Mathemat-
ics. No additional supporting data is needed.
Grades 1-3: English/Language Arts or Mathemat-
ics. Supporting data is needed.
Georgia Milestones End of Grade Assessment-
Grades 3-8: Students must score at the Distin-
guished Learner achievement level (4) for Eng-
lish/Language Arts or Mathematics. Supporting
data is needed. Grades 10-12 -students must have an overall cu-
mulative average of 95 or greater. supporting data
is needed.
II. Classroom Screening- Local schools select a
two-week period from January-February to review
all students in the school (Grades K-11). Class-
room teachers use the Characteristics Instrument
for Screening Students (CISS) to identify students
with superior abilities in five or more of the fol-
lowing areas: motivation, interests, communica-
tions skills, problem-solving abilities, memory,
inquiry, insight, reasoning, creativity, and hu-
mor.
Students who meet either the automatic screening
OR classroom screening criteria AND who have
supporting data gathered from test history, prod-
ucts, and/or advanced content levels are referred
for gifted placement testing.
Once referred to testing:-Parents receive the Par-ent Notification for Testing Consent Form.-Student is tested for the gifted program.
-Parents receive test results.
-Staffing meeting is held with parents of eligible students (Elementary only)
-If state eligibility is determined, students are placed in the gifted program with parental con-sent. III. Reported Referrals- All reported referrals
(parent, teacher and/or administrator) are complet-
ed through the two system- level screening and
referral processes each year. All referrals are
first reviewed by the local Eligibility Team to
consider if existing information warrants a
formal testing for eligibility.
Parents may request to view their child’s screen-
ing results. For more complete information re-
garding Fulton County Schools Gifted Services,

The Roswell High School March-
ing Band has been in full swing this summer
preparing for the fall season! The entire
marching band then experienced two weeks
of band camp in July with 12 hours daily of
intense music instruction and drills to prepare
for the 2019 marching show, “The Upside
Down” Inspired by Netflix’s Stranger
Things. Week one was held Milton High
School due to construction on campus and
then week two was off campus at the Univer-
sity of West Georgia in Carrolton, GA. The
Hornet Swarm performs at all football games,
marches in parades, and competes at several
competitions this fall. Check out our calendar
at www.roswellband.com and follow us on
Facebook @RHSBand to stay informed of all
RHS Band activities.
The Roswell High School Band, consisting of
three classroom ensembles, The Hornet
Swarm Marching Band, the Roswell Percus-
sion Ensemble, Roswell Indoor Drumline,
Roswell Jazz Band, Roswell Full Orchestra
and the Roswell Winter Guard, is supported
by the RHS Band Boosters Association and
many local businesses.
The Roswell High School Chorus is
proud of their superior ratings at Georgia
Music Educators Association
(GMEA) LGPE and Festival Disney
2019. Many of the students also partici-
pate in other GMEA honor events such as
District Honor Chorus and All-State Cho-
rus as well as GHSA Literary competi-
tion. This year, Roswell was named State
Champion 7A Literary Trio! There are
four performing ensembles at Roswell:
Chamber Chorus, Vocal Jazz Ensemble,
Men's Chorale and Women's Ensemble.
Enrollment in Chamber Chorus and Vocal
Jazz Ensemble is available by audition
only. Chorus performances throughout
the year include the Variety Show, a
themed-based high-energy revue, in addi-
tion to regular school concert performanc-
es and other performances throughout the
community. Next year, the Chamber
Chorus will have the opportunity to sing
at Carnegie Hall with the National Youth
Choir.
The RHS Musical Theatre Department,
with the combined talents of the Choral
and Theatre Departments, is proud to
participate in the Shuler Awards program
each year. RHS is thrilled to have been
one of two high schools in the county to
win an award in 2019, which celebrates
excellence in high school musical thea-
tre. Auditions for the musical take place
in the fall. More information
is available on the Facebook page, Ro-
swell High School Chorus or you can
contact Beth Williams
The Roswell High School Orchestra
program consists of four orchestras, in-
cluding the Chamber Orchestra which has
performed at the Midwest Clinic and the
Georgia Music Educators Conference on
two different occasions. Students in the
orchestra program perform consistently in
Solo and Ensemble, All-State, youth or-
chestras, Fulton County Honor Orchestra,
and receive superior ratings at Large
Group Performance Evaluation. The pro-
gram includes string quartets and cham-
ber music groups that perform in the com-
munity, as well as for events at RHS. Sara
White-Farnell will be in her 14th year
teaching at Roswell HS, and her 23rd
year in Fulton County Schools. Please
reach out to Ms. White-Farnell if you
have any questions about the program
at: [email protected].
It takes community and parent support to
operate the orchestra program. The Roswell
High Orchestra Booster Club (RHOB) was
formed in January 2019 with its mission to
promote and enhance the Orchestra Student
Experience. We are looking for parent volun-
teers for fundraising, publicity, and a weekly
newsletter plus several other committee mem-
bers. Please contact Becky Nelson at:
[email protected] or 404-406-6121.
2018-19 was another outstanding year for the
Roswell High School Junior Reserve Officer
Training Corps (JROTC). The next to last
major training event for the Hornet Battalion
is to take 15 Cadets to the JROTC Cadet
Leadership Camp at Riverside Military Acad-
emy followed closely by the Leadership
Team competing in Washington D.C. at the
National JROTC Leadership and Academic
Bowl. Among other achievements were:
teams that placed at the State Drill Meet and
Cadet Anusha Pakkam winning the JROTC
Regional Air Rifle Championship, placing
2nd in the Army Service JROTC Air Rifle
Championship and 6th in the All Service
JROTC Air Rifle Championship. The Hornet
Battalion continued to hone leadership skills
and support the community through commu-
nity service totaling over 3500 hours as we
continue to build the citizens of tomorrow.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) in Fulton County Schools aims to engage students in cutting-edge, hands-on career exploration and
preparation opportunities that set them up to excel in postsecondary education and productive careers. CTE programs and pathways allow
students to apply math, science, and communication competencies in laboratory and occupational settings that develop specific technical
skills applicable in broad concentration areas. Curriculum incorporates Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) in all content areas.
Students are encouraged to pursue pathway completion, which entails taking a sequence of courses (minimum of three) in the same indus-
try cluster. Upon completion of a pathway, students are eligible to take an assessment leading to an industry recognized credential or certi-
fication (e.g., Microsoft Office Specialist, OSHA Certification, NCCER Core Certification). Participation in co-curricular student organiza-
tions (e.g. Skills USA, DECA and FBLA) and work-based learning enables students to leave high school with tangible marketable skills
and documentation of their capabilities, as well as greater understanding of the college and career paths related to their chosen industry.
Currently, Roswell High School offers Career Tech courses in the following eight industries:
Architectural Drawing and Design Food and Nutrition
Broadcast/Video Production JROTC – Army
Construction Personal Care Services – Cosmetology
Engineering and Technology Web and Digital Communications
Contact Career Tech Department Chair Lisa Funderburk for more information: [email protected]
As an added-bonus, RHS PTSA offers a scholarship specifically for seniors who have completed a CTE pathway!

PTSA Business Partners and Scholarships
It’s a Win-Win! Local Businesses and Families Help Dreams Come True for Graduating Seniors
Our Scholarship Team will work with you and your company to find the best fit for your partnership: fund the general scholarship pool or we
will work with you to custom-create a scholarship that matches your personal and professional interests.
There is a scholarship for everyone: we have created scholarships to suit the needs of our diversely talented students and with the help of our
Scholarship Business Partners, we are able to offer more scholarships to reach more students. In April 2019, scholarships were awarded to
students for excellence in academics, art, vocation studies, CTE (Career Tech Education) pathway completion, good character, positive contri-
butions to school and community, work ethic, success despite adversity and new this year: entrepreneurship. This newest scholarship is a per-
fect example of a custom-created scholarship. The scholarship includes a monetary award and mentorship sessions with Business Partners Tom
(’91) and Joanne Curtin of Curtin Team Cares, Keller Williams Realty.
We are looking for a company or individual who is interested in supporting specific subject areas: such as Technology or Fine Arts or
other interests such as Going Green: Environmental Stewardship, or whatever is important to you/your company.
Are you ready for a Win-Win with RHS Seniors and the RHS PTSA Scholarship Team? Please contact Lee Hills [email protected] and
Anne Fallon [email protected] to start making dreams come true. We are truly grateful for our 2019 Scholarship Business Partners:
Applerouth, Phillip Chritton, Tom and Joanne Curtin, Curtin Team Cares, Keller William Realty, Lisa Gallagher and Angela Freeman with
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Cobb Roswell Office, Flavor EXP, Dede Rehkopf, Rebecca Stone, Attorney at Law, TurfMasters Lawn
Care.
Roswell Communications, under the direction of Administration and with support from the School Governance Council, has been working
diligently over the past year to promote Roswell High School. The Communications Team was born in 2018 from a Fulton County initiative
to improve relationships internally and externally through print and visual communication and partnerships in education. A branding cam-
paign that started in 2016 with the support of Administration and the PTSA set Roswell up for successful declaration of its identity and
voice.
Business Partner Liaison Eileen Leisses forged nine alliances between the school and local businesses last year. Relationships with Partners
in Education have been a great support for Roswell High School and beneficial to the partners as well. When partnerships are created, our
mission of building community grows and strengthens the Nest. Please contact Eileen at [email protected] for more information.
Communications Manager Betsy Rhame-Minor sent out twenty news releases and many social media posts on our official platforms this past
school year. Twenty-four stories were publicized about Roswell in newspapers, magazines, and digital media outlets. Besty has been docu-
menting and sharing student life, faculty, and staff triumphs and important announcements from Administration. For Publicity, contact Betsy
Brand Manager Pam Nitzken has received and fulfilled hundreds of brand requests from faculty, staff, Roswell affiliated groups and partners,
and provided communications analytics to Administration. Our internal Brand launch is full throttle. School groups and booster clubs are
branding through Roswell Communications, approved vendors are creating official Roswell High School apparel, equipment, and décor in
accordance with the Brand Guidelines and school programs are reaping the benefits of fundraising with a cohesive identity to a community
that has embraced the new look. For Branding, contact Pam at [email protected]. Visit the RHS YouTube channel for more infor-
mation: https://youtu.be/CWyUhnpEwac

The RHS School Governance Council
(SGC) is proud of their most recent
achievements – our continued efforts to
fulfill the RHS Strategic Plan. Visit
https://roswellhornets.org/about/school-
governance-council/ . Scroll to RHS Stra-
tegic Plan 2022 and the monitoring tool
to see the progress we have made. The
strategic plan includes four overarching
objectives: student achievement, people
and culture, community collaboration,
and fiscal responsibility.
SGC meetings are open to the public and
parents are welcome to attend. Meeting
dates and times, along with agendas and
meeting minutes, can be found on the
school website. https://
roswellhornets.org/about/school-
governance-council/ . Attending SGC
meetings is a great way to hear about the
direction of the school. More importantly,
it is a valuable opportunity to identify
those areas in which you can help and be
an active participant in that direction.
Fulton County Schools (FCS) became a
Charter System in 2012, and is the largest
in Georgia. Charter systems give schools
the opportunity to support the needs of
their students and allows for flexibility
from one-size-fits-all state requirements.
Roswell High School began the transition
to a FCS Charter System School in 2014
with the formation of our first SGC.
The purpose of the SGC is to provide
parents, school staff, and community
members with an active leadership role in
the management of the school. The SGC
operates under the control and manage-
ment of the Board of Education, and is
responsible for making decisions regard-
ing the strategic direction of the school
including: a.) Approve the schools strate-
gic plan and updates b.) Approve the an-
nual budget and annual resource alloca-
tions c.) Manage the Request for Flexibil-
ity Process d.) Participate in hiring the
principal (in the case of a vacancy) e.)
Provide annual feedback on principal
performance.

Student Parking 2019 -2020
Decals for those who paid the parking fee
by May 22, 2019 can be picked up on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 pm to
3:00 pm in the front office starting
Tuesday June 4, 2019. Students must
bring in their receipt and driver’s license
when picking up their decals.
No cash or check payments will be taken
over the summer.
If you have not already paid online, cash
or checks can be brought into Mrs. Bright
in the Assistant Principal’s Office, on
Wednesday, August 7 or Thursday,
August 8, 2019 from 1:00 pm to 3:00
pm. Please note your student’s name in
the memo line and include a valid phone
number on the check. If your student paid
online in May but was unable to pick up
the decal over the summer, he/she can
pick it up in the Assistant Principal’s of-
fice during this time
as well. Anyone who has an outstanding
fine, Surface, or outstanding textbook
will NOT be issued a decal until their
fines and/or textbooks are cleared.
ELA Online Class
Mrs. Bregeth is offering a 3-day online
class to help students strengthen their core
ELA skills. It’s great for the summer!
Each day students will get 3-4 lessons and
videos that they can work on at their own
pace (totally online!). This course is good
for any ELA student since the topics—
from writing techniques for the AP writer
or thesis statements for any writer—vary
and are applicable to all levels. Mrs.
Bregeth is a veteran RHS ELA teacher of
14 years who has taught all ELA levels—
regular, honors, and AP. Email Mrs.
Bregeth at [email protected] if
you have any questions about this flexible
class: http://
writingsimplified.teachable.com There is
no “start” date; students just enroll based
on their own schedule and begin! $49

online Fulton County Volunteer training and an
ability to warmly welcome visitors to
RHS. Most volunteers rotate the same shift eve-
ry month, for example, the AM shift every 2nd
Monday. For more information regarding volun-
teering at the greeter desk, please contact Ginger
Greve at [email protected] or 770-262-

somewhere handy because it contains
important dates and information that you
will use all year long.
Get involved! Whether a parent, teacher
or student, the opportunities to participate
in fun and interesting activities are virtu-
ally unlimited! Your time and talent are
in high demand. Our school will be what
we make of it.
Write a check! (Or, donate online!) Fulton County covers only a portion of
the expenditures required to run a suc-
cessful school. Many other activities re-
