Both students are in their second year of matriculation and doing well. Shirdell Kenney was offered employment at the new Busboys and Poets restaurant in the historic Anacostia neighborhood. The restaurant opened on March 12, 2019. LaChey Jackson completed and earned the Microsoft Office Specialist in Word certification on March 22, 2019. Ms. Jackson earned a score of 907 out of a possible 1000 points on the MOS Word assessment, and received an offer of employment at the District of Columbia Department of Human Resources Job Fair in March 2019. Alexandria (Alex) Walker, a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) student, was selected to participate in the DC Learn Earn Advance Prosper (L.E.A.P.) Academy. The program trains District residents who currently receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits to serve DC residents. The LEAP Academy bridges the gap between unemployed/underemployed TANF customers and in-demand jobs within DC Government while providing a pathway to the middle class. The program is a collaboration between the District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES) and DHS, Office of Work Opportunity (OWO). The goal is to target TANF customers for positions available within DC government.

On February 13 and 14, 2019, the PATHS training team conducted Fair Housing training.

7students participated, passing the Fair Housing training examination.

FOOD HANDLER TRAININGOn February 13 and 14, 2019, the PATHS training team, in partnership with the DHS, Office of Work Opportunity (OWO), conducted ServSafe Food Handler’s training. Nine students attended the training. Seven students earned the ServSafe Food Handler certification.

The ServSafe Food Handler certificate is the most popular certification awarded by ServSafe. It is also referred to as a Food Handler’s card or a Food Worker’s permit. The purpose of the certification is to ensure that food service employees and staff have an understanding of basic food safety principles. The certificate is awarded after completing the course and passing the assessment. The assessment will test knowledge in the following five categories: Basic Food Safety Personal Hygiene Cross-contamination and Allergens Time and Temperature Cleaning and Sanitation

communityoutreachExpanded Efforts in Wards 7 and 8 In an effort to strengthen existing community partnerships and expand pathways to self-sufficiency, the PATHS training team continues to administer targeted outreach on a monthly basis to engage and retain its customers residing in Wards 7 and 8.

Valentine’s Day Reengagement

On February 14, 2019, the UDC PATHS Training and Community Outreach team conducted outreach at the Anacostia Library. The purpose of the event was to reengage inactive customers. Individuals were able to obtain information on upcoming classes and services to support their attainment of work readiness training and/or certification. A total of five customers attended the event.

University of the District of Columbia Office of Admission and Community CollegeThe UDC Office of Admissions team continues to conduct monthly seminars with students in the PATHS program. The Office of Admission’s staff provides an overview of the postsecondary education opportunities available to students at the flagship and community college locations.

NEW TRAINING National Apartment Leasing Professional and Microsoft Office Specialist certificationsIn 2019, the Institute of Human Service Delivery enhanced its workforce development program. Two new course offerings were added to the PATHS program. The courses aligned with the University’s vision to train individuals in high-demand careers in information technology and real estate.

The PATHS program began offering training for National Apartment Leasing Professionals (NALP) and Microsoft Office Specialists to prepare individuals for national certifications and employment in in-demand careers in Technology and Property Management/Real Estate.

The NALP training is offered to students who complete the Concierge Essentials class. It is a national certification, and identified as one of t he five high-demand industries in the District of Columbia.

FEDCAPAn information session on the PATHS program and services was conducted for students enrolled with FedCap. The TANF provider offers workforce development services to individuals seeking to become economically self-sufficient.

On May 2, 2019, the PATHS program, in partnership with five employment partners, will host a Job Fair at the University of the District of Columbia Student Center. The event will feature NRI Staffing.

On May 8, 2019, the PATHS program will participate in a job fair with other District TANF Employment Providers (TEP). The event will be held at St. Elizabeths.
