Agency Overview

The NSW Ministry of Health supports the NSW Health Cluster which is made up of public hospitals which are run by 14 Local Health Districts, the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, NSW Ambulance, NSW Health Pathology, Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network, and other state-wide support agencies.

The Ministry also supports the Minister for Health and Medical Research, and the Minister for Mental Health by providing advice and information to enable them to perform their executive and statutory functions. These functions include improving the health and wellbeing of the people of NSW, while considering the needs of the state and the finances and resources available.

Ministry staff work on a range of strategic projects and programs in collaboration with local health districts, specialty networks and other health organisations to deliver on the health priorities of the NSW Government.

Workforce Planning and Talent Development

The purpose of the Workforce Planning and Talent Development Branch is to plan, develop, facilitate, communicate and evaluate health workforce strategies across the NSW health system, to improve health outcomes for the people of NSW.

In collaboration with National and State agencies and other stakeholders it aims to establish a clear picture of the health workforce now and into the future to improve workforce supply and distribution.

It has a role in providing leadership, information, education and support to health services, within a changing and challenging environment.

The Branch is made up of six Units:

Aboriginal Workforce

Allied Health Workforce

Medical Workforce

Workforce Policy and Development

Workforce Planning and Performance

Workforce Strategy and Culture

Key purpose of the placement

This opportunity sits in the Workforce Policy and Development Unit [WPD]. WPD leads NSW Health's Strategic Workforce Planning and Talent Management Strategies.

The Unit identifies mega trends likely to impact or disrupt the system and the workforce. We develop proactive and future focussed initiatives to increase the capacity and capability of the current and future NSW Health workforce.

The Unit work plan’s main areas of focus are concentrated on the importance and significance of:

strategic directions of workforce to inform the leaders in our Health Service

talent management across our services

identifying critical workforce groups to ensure the continued provision of health services, and

the essential role of education and training in ensuring we have a workforce that is responsive to emerging needs of the community.

WPD is headed up by Tamara Lee and has two teams, the Workforce Development Team and the Educational Pathways and Linkages Team.

Tasks to be undertaken by the intern

NOTE: While we have done our best to list tasks, with the current rapid change in our work focus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the actual content of the tasks may and very likely will change between now and November and between the internship’s two placements. We are constantly refocussing our work to adapt to the changing demands resulting from the pandemic response.

Policy research – examining current policy from other jurisdictions and globally in relation to workforce development

Desk research – for example exploring world’s best practice in workforce development

Stakeholder engagement – working with stakeholders across NSW Health to gather information for projects being undertaken

Any essential requirements

The branch is currently working remotely most of the time. Candidates must be capable, self-managing, and be comfortable with remote working and being managed remotely. We will do all that we can to ensure they feel welcomed and part of the team. The candidate can attend at 1 Reserve Road to work. 1 Reserve Road is an agile workplace and any physical workplace adjustments required would need to be advised as soon as possible.

Ideal Degree/Discipline

Arts, political science, teaching, science, human resources.

Eligibility Requirements

Second last year of a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree (must be due to graduate in either Sem 1 or Sem 2 of 2021).

Permanent residents and Australian citizens only

Identify as having disability

Candidates may be required to undergo a background check security clearance
