FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK My dear people,

Today, we celebrate Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ). Primarily, the feast celebrates the great gift of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist, reserved in tabernacles throughout the world. Often on this day, there are celebrations of the Mystical Body of Christ (the Church) as well. Tonight, we celebrate with a Solemn Latin Mass, followed by a procession with the Blessed Sacrament and a covered dish supper. The Eucharistic procession is a public manifestation and celebration of our Eucharistic faith as (weather permitting) we process outside the church building with the Blessed Sacrament. Culturally, the Corpus Christi procession has an interesting history. In Catholic cultures, houses and streets are still decorated for the occasion. Pope Benedict once recalled the processions in the Bavaria of his youth: how the local militia unit would proudly wear their uniforms and fire salutes to the Sacrament with their cannon. In medieval times, where a person was placed in the procession (how close or far from the Blessed Sacrament) was an important status symbol. I have seen photos of military chaplains holding the procession in jungles of southeast Asia during WWII. I once read an account of a Corpus Christi procession in Africa during the rain. People were dancing before the Eucharist despite the rain for joy at the gift of Christ’s enduring presence.

It is good that we have this opportunity for Eucharistic Devotion this year as I realize we will have to cancel Nocturnal Adoration on the night of July 4th. As the Fourth falls on the night before First Friday, it will be nigh well impossible to get on or off the Island what with the fireworks display. If you’ve never tried this, believe me you don’t want to start. Some years ago, I received a sick call for a dying man on the Isle of Palms on the night of the Fourth. It took over an hour to get there; had I known I would have gone by bicycle.

Friday of this week (June 28) is Carolina Day. I always remember the time over fifty years ago when I was riding my bicycle up Central Avenue and saw Miss Keenan Blanchard putting out her American flag. ‘Aunt Keenan, why you puttin’ your flag out today?” ‘Today is Carolina Day.’ ‘Carolina Day? What’s dat?’ ‘Boy, don’t you know what Carolina Day is? It’s the day of the battle, when we beat the British RIGHT HERE ON SULLIVAN’S ISLAND!’ There will be a brief commemoration this Friday at 9:00 A.M. at the Sullivan’s Island Town Hall.

Summertime brings many good associations of relaxing good times. I hope you are getting your share. Various reports have crabs coming in but many are too small to keep. It’s a good sign. Father McInerny

PARISH NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

PLEASE NOTE

Due to the crowds on Sullivan’s Island for the celebration of the 4th of July, there will be NO Nocturnal Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for July. We will resume on Thursday, August 1st.

UPDATING PARISH “SICK LIST”

Please note: We are going to be updating our list of people who are on our “sick list” on a monthly basis. Please let us know if someone should remain on the list by calling the office at 843-883-3108.

HOMESCHOOL CO-OP OPENINGS

Are you interested in a Catholic homeschool co-op? Our Lady Star of the Sea homeschool co-op will meet every Thursday on Sullivan’s Island. For the 2019/20 academic year, there are available spaces in 5K - 2nd, 3rd - 5th, and 6th - 8th grades. Please call Audrey Vaughan at 843-327-7304 or Jill DeFord at 404-343-8700 for further information.

FROM THE BOOKKEEPER Envelopes

Building Fund: While we are not running a fund raising drive, we do have a building fund that you may want to contribute to. If so, please mark the envelope AND the check memo with “Building Fund.” Please do NOT mix parish, second collection, and building fund donations in one check or one envelope. This will be a tremendous help to those counting!

For those parishioners who have put their mail on a temporary hold, please be aware that the Post Office does NOT hold your parishioner donation envelope packets. They are returned to us and we, in turn, place them in the rear of the Church to be picked up. Please check to see if your packet might be there. Any questions, please call the parish office.

Please note: if you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office during regular hours at 843-883-3108 for information about joining the parish.
