Seek refuge in the name

of the Lord

Vincentian Reflection: Jesus’ answer puts things into perspective. There are different spheres of rule, and our loyalties are not either/or, but there are appropriate behavior belonging to both spheres. Christian living is being comfortable in all spheres, all having their just due, without compromising God’s sovereignty. When God is truly the center of our lives there is no problem with giving others their due. Conversely, giving others their due doesn’t necessarily compromise God as the center of our lives. Jesus shows that single-mindedness about God is even better expressed when we know clearly God’s place and everyone else’s place. (Living

Liturgy, p.256)

Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relation-ships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for posi-tion in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy re-sponse? In this Sunday’s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle

over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus’ response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective.

In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that

God is the ultimate source of all power—the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Knights of Columbus invite the parish to join them for a Baby Shower in Honor of Our Blessed Mother at 9:30 am this Sunday, Octo-ber 22 in Craven Hall. Cake and punch will be served. Real Life Pregnancy Center and moth-ers in need in Marshall County will be the recipi-ents of the gifts. Suggested items in include lay-ette items: onesies, t-shirts, socks, receiving blankets, towels, washcloths, infant outfits, and items of this nature.

Saint Jude, apostle and Holly-wood success story? Indeed! Beyond Simon’s being a “ Zealot” for Israel’s liberation and Jude’s question about Je-sus revealing himself (John 14:22), no historic facts are known about either saint. But Saint Jude’s well-known pa-tronage of “lost causes” and “hopeless cases” is largely due to a desperate vow made just be-fore World War II by a strug-gling entertainer, the son of Arab-American immigrants, Danny Thomas. Unemployed, his wife about to give birth, Danny, attending Mass, impul-sively donated his last $7.00 to the collection, promising: “Saint Jude, if you help me

find my way in life, I will build a shrine in your honor!” Older Americans remember well Danny’s long, successful movie and television career. Grateful parents worldwide know the

miracles that have taken place for fifty years at his Saint Jude Chil-dren’s Research Hospital, where needy children are cared for regard-less of race, relig-

ion, or financial resources, and monumental advances con-tinue in healing and prevent-ing pediatric cancers and catastrophic childhood dis-eases. A living, life-giving part-nership is this “Communion of Saints”: Simon, Jude, Danny Thomas—us! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

¿QUÉ PERTENECE A DIOS?

Perte-necemos a Dios.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
