School following the November 29 classroom competition. These Fourth and Fifth Grade students are: Tyler Behe, Dylan Brown, Mary Burrows, Elliot Epstein, McKenna Loncao, Andrew Rayburn, Drew Scorsone, Cooper Springer, Alex Wright, and Mateo Thompson. Congratulations to all of our students on their success!

Students enjoyed breakfast with their guests while sharing projects they made especially for them. They then celebrated the start of the formal day with our school-wide prayer and pledge. This annual breakfast tradition is always special for our Kindergarteners and their guests.

+ Don’t forget this coming Wednesday is the St. Rita School Prospective Parent Information Night, starting at 7:00 PM in the church. Learn about the JOY we teach in every subject area, the benefits of a faith-based education, all of the extra-curricular activities we offer which range from academic based to athletics, and our excellent before and after school Child Care options. Get a tour of our school and talk to parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and students on their perspective of St. Rita School. Education is a priceless gift that will last a lifetime.

As Erika Griffin, a current parent and parent of two alumni said: “Why was St. Rita's the best decision for our family? We wanted an education that was faith-based, a curriculum that was rigorous, and an environment that felt like home.” Welcome home to St. Rita School!

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. – Isaiah 9:1

We are privileged to see the Light of God – to personally know Jesus, the Word made flesh. He calls us just as He called His first apostles – to follow Him, to change, and by the witness of our transformed lives, to attract others to the Good News.

The songs we will sing together remind us that all are invited to His table and, just like the ordinary men that were called that day by the seashore, we are empowered by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to invite others.

The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass!

“Behold, The Lamb Of God, Who Takes Away The Sin Of The World”

T his Sunday begins the liturgical period of Ordinary Time. It is the period between the high seasons of Advent / Christmas and Lent / Easter. It is characterized by the numbered (ordinal) Sundays each week. Note: There is no “First Sunday in Ordinary Time” due to

differences in countries that celebrate the feast of the Epiphany on a weekday.

Our Readings today point to yet another manifestation of Jesus, this time as “the Lamb of God”, the sacrificial lamb who will save God’s people from the exile of sin.

Our first reading (Isaiah 49:3,5-6) is the second poem of what are known as the four “Servant Songs” of Isaiah. Last week we heard from the first poem. Together, these four poems paint a complete picture of a suffering servant, anointed by God, who will deliver Israel and the nations from sin and darkness. The term “nations”, which we have been hearing about the past few Sundays, refers to all the people of the world, but more specifically to the Gentile, non-Jewish world. Isaiah’s writings make clear that God’s plan is to call all people to himself, using Israel as the “light to the nations, that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth”.

The LORD said to me: You are my servant, Israel, through whom I show my glory. Now the LORD has spoken who formed me as his servant from the womb, that Jacob may be brought back to him and Israel gathered to him; and I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD, and my God is now my strength! It is too little, the LORD says, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

In our Epistle reading (1 Corinthians 1:1-3), we hear from the opening of St. Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth. Paul identifies himself as one called by God “to be an apostle of Christ Jesus.” Paul converted many Gentiles while living in Corinth and gave life and meaning to the term “light to the nations.”

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Gospel reading (John 1:29-34) adds to the multifaceted portrait of Jesus that we have been reading since Christmas. This Sunday’s passage describes Jesus as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”. He is not the cute, cuddly little lamb we often see depicted, but more like the sacrificial lamb of the Passover, that gave its life so that its blood would be a sign on the doorposts to deliver Israel from slavery in Egypt. Jesus, the new Paschal Lamb, will shed his blood on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. This Lamb is the Son of God, in whom the Spirit remains.

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

W hat do today’s readings have to do with us in our world today? We are reminded that throughout salvation history, God has called upon and relied upon his children to be beacons of hope and light, leading others to the one true God. The suffering servant of Isaiah, the prophets, John the Baptist, St. Paul, and Israel itself were all

called and sent by God. This is no less true today as now, we are the servants called by God to lead others to Christ. May it be we who become the “light to the nations”, through whom God "shows his glory".
