ADULT FAITH FORMATIONThis Week in Alpha: Session 3:
How Can We Have Faith? and
Why and How Do I Pray? How Can We Have Faith? Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1“I now have hope where previously there was only despair. I can forgive now, where before there was only coldness…God is so alive for me. I can feel Him guiding me and the complete and utter loneliness which I have been feeling is gone. God is filling a deep, deep void. I had met other Christians (through a friend) who just seemed very at peace with the world and fulfilled and I thought, ‘I fancy a bit of that’….”
~ Nickey Gumbel, pioneer of the Alpha Course.Faith is assurance – it is not a matter of opinion or suspicion. We can know that we have eternal life.Faith is about things not seen – it is not science. Through faith, we come into the Kingdom of God, which exists today, but is not visible. Faith is directed to things hoped for – it is not centered on this life. Our faith focuses us on Eternity.Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit, necessary for salvation. The Holy Spirit gives us grace, that we may have faith in God with our whole being and believe in everything that God has revealed about himself. Our belief is our response to faith. It is a decision we make with God’s help, a decision we make day to day, moment to moment. But, God is steadfast and will supply us with the grace necessary to have faith. When we feel our faith slipping, we should pray for God’s grace and hold onto our belief even more strongly.
Why and How Do I Pray?Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8Prayer is first and foremost communication. It is an opportunity to talk to God, but it is also a chance for God to talk to us. Whether we pray through the saints or directly to God through Jesus, God is the Person at the “other end of the line.”The ACTS formula for prayer is a simple way to remember that prayer is communication with our Father.A – Adoration. Praising God for Who He is and what He has done.C – Confession. Examining our consciences and asking God’s forgiveness.T – Thanksgiving. Thanking God for the good things in our life and prayers He has answered.S – Supplication. Asking for things from God for ourselves and others.

Get Unbound and Live Free! Conference – February 11Do you feel like you are spiritually “stuck?” Do you live a life filled with stress, worry, anxiety and fear? The LiveFree! Conference presents the five keys to finding freedom based on the Unbound model which is a simple, gentle, and powerful prayer ministry where you will learn how to claim the freedom that Jesus promises – freedom to be who you really are and freedom to live the life you were meant to live. It is about fully knowing God’s love in order to freely love ourselves and others. This conference is not for certain individuals – it is for everyone! Please visit the SJN website AT www.saintjohnsunbury.org for more information and to register.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONColumbian SquiresBeginning in January 2017, the Knights of Columbus will be forming a Columbian Squires program at St. John Neumann. The Columbian Squires is the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus and is a leadership development program for
young Catholic men, ages 10-18-years-old. The Knights will be available in the Cloister Walkway again this weekend to discuss the program or answer any questions. We will also be having a Kickoff Meeting on Monday, January 30, at 6:30 p.m., in the lower level of the Parish Office. The primary focus of the Squires will be to provide a service and charity-based organization for our young Catholic men. A Squires circle is run by and for them, under the guidance of several Knights, who serve as counselors. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their circle’s agenda and implementing their program of activities. If your son has an interest in joining the Charter Circle of the Squires, or for more information, contact Keith Rubadue at [email protected], or Phil Gullatta at [email protected], or visit us in the Cloister Walkway this weekend!
Save the Date for Bosco Bash – February 11Bosco Bash, the Diocesan Middle School Youth Rally for Grades 6-8, will be Saturday, February 11th, at St. Timothy Church, from 2:30-9:00 p.m. There will be music by Station 14, time with friends, skits, games, dinner, and evening Mass with Fr. Lynch. The Bash will feature speaker Paul J. Kim, who has a growing international reputation as a dynamic speaker and musician with a powerful message of faith, hope, and love. Join other teens from the Columbus area and celebrate God’s passionate love for us! The cost to attend is $25.00 per teen. Please contact Sarah Stefaniak at [email protected] to learn more about registering.

Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
You are cordially invited to become a member of our Adoration Family of scheduled Adorers. Many current Adorers faithfully cover their hour alone – having you to share this hour benefits you both.
First, you will find that spending an hour with our Eucharistic Lord weekly will bless your life, fill you with peace, and help you grow closer in your relationship with our Eucharistic Lord.
Second, having a partner provides flexibility for those times when your schedule requires you to miss a week. You and your fellow Adorer become backups for one another. Another option is to alternate weeks with each other.
Be the one to answer the call to Eucharistic Adoration today. Sign-ups and more information is available today after all the Masses in the Cloister Walkway near the Chapel. There are many available hours from which to choose.
If you are unable to sign up today, contact the Coordinator below to set up your hour.
Vulnerable/Open Hours Needing New Scheduled Adorers:Friday, 2:00-3:00 a.m.; Saturday, 3:00-4:00 a.m.; Saturday, 3:00-4:00 p.m. (this hour is perfect for someone who usually attends 4:00 p.m. Mass); Saturday, 8:00-9:00 p.m.
Adoration Hours:All hours are open except for weekend Mass hours. However, if you are not a scheduled Adorer and wish to visit during lockdown hours, please contact the Coordinator. Regular lockdown hours are Sunday through Thursday, 4:00 p.m.-9:00 a.m.; Friday, 12:00 noon to 12:00 midnight. Saturday varies. All are welcome.
Adoration Coordinator: Amy Davis (614-579-9874 or [email protected])

Kindway, Reynoldsburg, OH
Dear Members of the Good Samaritan Ministry,
The men and women we serve continue to face barriers and challenges. The staff, board and volunteers of Kindway EMBARK stand beside them as they journey from incarceration to independence.
Because you gave, our team is equipped to provide essential items for survival: food, clothing, bus passes and toiletries. Because you care, our team is able to stay connected to our participants. Also, we are able to connect them to jobs, housing and a supportive community. Hope for a better life is restored. Because of your help, obstacles are overcome and lives are restored.
Thank you for your very generous grant of $460.00 to pay for bus passes. You save lives and we are eternally grateful.
Blessings,
Christine MoneyExecutive Director, Kindway

Did you know you can purchase Giant Eagle and Meijer gift cards to do your weekly shopping, resulting in a contribution to SJN? You can also register your Kroger reward card so SJN receives contributions. None of these methods reduce your fuel points or perks at your favorite store. Stop by the SCRIP Table after Mass! Make a difference!
