Australia. We acknowledge the Wiradjuri Nation as the traditional custodians of these lands we now call
Bathurst, and we pay our respects to their Elders St Philomena’s is A Child-Safe Child-Friendly School.
Child-safe means taking active measures to keep children and young people safe from physical, sexual or emotional abuse.
Child-friendly means creating a trusting environment that values, respect and welcome children and young people. This means
children and young people feel confident to raise any problem or concern and know they will be listened to.

Rest in the Lord Week
I hope that your family are enjoying our “Down Week” and can take the opportunity to set aside time to be

This Sunday marks the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord Let us pray, [that the risen Christ will lead us to eternal life] God our Father, make us joyful in the ascension of your Son Jesus Christ. May we follow him into the new creation, for his ascension is our glory and our hope. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
Word of Wisdom from St. Francis on Conversation
How often have we said something for the sake of having something to say, only to have it backfire? How often
do we invoke the anger or pain of another, not because of what we said, but because of how we said it. Ever
wish that you could take something back that you spoke to another out of anger, frustration or sarcasm?
Words are powerful. Words have an effect. Words can heal and raise up. Words can injure and tear down.
In our busy lives, may God give us the grace and the wisdom to speak simply, justly and with kindness to
each other.
Confirmation
This Thursday, students from James Sheehan will be visiting the school and working with Yr 6 in preparation
for their Confirmation on Sunday 4th
June. This peer mentoring is a wonderful way for youth to inspire younger
students and encourage their faith development. We thank the Yr 10 students and their teacher Mrs Amber
Callega for their hard work and commitment to this program.
On Friday 26th
May all four Catholic Primary Schools in Bathurst will be sending their Yr 6 children to St.
Phil’s to take part in a Reflection day with Chris Doyle, in preparation for Confirmation. There will be approx.
200 children attending and St. Phil’s will be hosting a BBQ Sausage Sizzle.
We are in urgent need of BBQ helpers for 1.5 hours at 12.00pm-1.30pm. Please
contact the School Admin Office if anyone could kindly assist Mrs Bray, Mrs
Mutton and Ms Holden on the day.
Reminder - There is a Confirmation Support Liturgy at 9am in the hall on Thursday
1st June for our Year Six children - All welcome.
The Bishop will visit the Yr 6 class on Wednesday 31st May.
Association of Catholic Schools Principals (ACSP)
This week Mrs. Louise Davies is attending the ACSP NSW State three day Conference at the Hunter Valley.
Cardinal John Dew from New Zealand will frame his presentation around the question posed by Pope Francis:
“What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, the children who are now growing up?”
His presentation will address some of the challenges we face and how we might act responsibly with gratitude.
Mrs Davies will be attending the following Master classes:
The practical challenges of encountering new horizons –“how to teach less and yet learn more?”
Dr Pak Tee Ng will discuss how school leaders can lead this initiative and how teachers can achieve this in
practise.
FinnishEd Leadership- “Three ideas to improve your school”
Dr Pasi Sahlberg will discuss how school leaders and policy makers are increasingly looking at inspiration and
also concrete ideas for their work from other education systems. Singapore and Finland are two such systems
where thousands of school leaders have travelled in search of new ideas. Workshops will be attended after the
presentations for the participants to work on ideas for their own school.
The conference will be a unique learning experience.
Term 2 School Fees
Term 2 school fees are due for payment by this Friday 26th
May. BPay is the preferred method of payment.
Thank you to all the family that have already paid their fees.
Robotics Day
As this week is ‘Rest in the Lord’ Mr. Parslow organised a ‘Robotics Day’ in which all classes could participate
in. In the infants classes the Beebot/Bluebot was used and is a perfect tool for teaching sequencing, estimation,
problem-solving and just having fun. They are easy to use and quick to setup. Coding is completed by button
presses on device itself. The Edison Robot was used in the primary classes. Software was used to program the
robots to perform specific actions.
It was great to see all students enjoying this great learning experience and we thank Mr. Parslow for organising
the day.
Assumption Soccer Gala Day Last Friday 19
th May some Year 3 and 4 students attended the Soccer Gala Day organised by the Assumption
School. The girl’s team played extremely well with Charlotte Schumacher and Ava Hotham being the stand
outs of the day. The boy’s teams remain undefeated with the highlight being both sides clashing in the final
match. The standard of play was outstanding with neither side able to break a 0/0 deadlock. This was a fantastic
result for two talented soccer teams. Well done St. Phil’s. Thank you to Nathan Turnbull for your kind
assistance and the Assumption School for organising such a wonderful day of competition.
Peachey/Richardson Rugby League Shield On Tuesday 5 teams from St Philomena's competed at the Richardson (Year 3/4) and Peachey (Year 5/6) rugby
league gala day.
Some regular and many first time rugby league players from our school displayed amazing skills and great
sportsmanship on the day.
Congratulations goes to our Year 3/4 team who were runners up in the Richardson shield, going down in a close
game 4-3, but still progressing through to the finals in Dubbo in the last week of term 2. A note will go out to
those children involved. A big thank you goes to Miss Holden, Mr. Hanley, Mrs. Hotham, Mr. Parslow and Mr.
Macfarlane for their coaching and organisation of the day.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Henry Miller from Yr 6 who has been selected in the Central West U12’s
Rugby side wearing the No: 5 jersey. Well done!
National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day is an Australia-Wide Observance held on May 26
each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share
the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and
communities. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who
were forcibly removed from their families and communities.
As a Catholic School Community, we achnowledge National Sorry Day
and pray for peace and reconciliation between all Australia people.

Stage Two - Year 3 and Year 4 Year Four and Three will be performing at this week’s assembly. Their item is a well-known song from the
Sound of Music. Please come along this Friday and be dazzled by Stage Two's singing, percussion
playing and actions to this great song.
Stage Two engaged in a Robotics workshop this week. The children thoroughly enjoyed putting together a
series of commands to program their robot to 'Sumo Wrestle' other robots.
