SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: With the conclusion of the Christmas season, we begin a short stretch of ordinary time Sundays before the start of the season of Lent. In the Gospel reading for today, we hear John’s account of the baptism of Jesus. Recall last Sunday, the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we heard Matthew’s version of Jesus’ baptism. This week John the Baptist proclaims Jesus as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” This was an unusual greeting, to say the least. John the Baptist’s underlying message, however, would have been crystal clear to the audience who heard it. The Jews were used to the idea of sacrificing a lamb in a ritual of atonement. Now, John was declaring that this man walking towards him, Jesus, was in fact the new lamb, the sacrificial offering that would atone for the sins not just of one person, but of all people. No one is excluded from the gift of salvation. Do we accept that God can forgive even the sins of our enemies, of those who have hurt and mistreated us? Can we forgive them too, as God has done through his Son? When we struggle to forgive someone, we can pray for the grace to love that person as Jesus has loved us. CELIAC DISEASE: A Mayo Clinic-led analysis published in 2012 estimates that roughly 1.8 million Americans have this disease, but around 1.4 million of them are unaware that they have it. We have low-gluten hosts available for members of our parish who have this condition. If you or a member of your family is in need of a low-gluten host, please come into the sacristy before Mass and let us know. We have a special pyx that will be used for the low gluten host. We will ask you to place the host in the pyx and at Communion the priest or minister will give you the pyx. This way we try not to cross-contaminate the low gluten host. PARISH MISSION: Fr. Romulus Rosolowski, OFM Conv. will lead us in our Mission from February 17, 18 and 19. He will speak in the morning after the 8:00 AM Mass and again the same talk in the evening at 7:00 PM. The topic that Fr. Romulus has chosen is the Sacrament of Reconciliation. He will base his talks on the book “7 Secrets of Confession” by Vinny Flynn, published by MercySong, Inc. If you are interested in purchasing this book, it is available from Amazon. Vatican City, January 08, 2014 -- In his first General Audience of 2014, Pope Francis began a new series of catechesis on the Sacraments in St. Peter’s Square, focusing today on the Sacrament of Baptism. “Baptism is the sacrament in which our faith is founded upon and which engages us as living members in Christ and in His Church,” the Holy Father said. Along with the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation, the Pope said that all three constitute a single event which shows us a sign of God’s love. The sacrament of Baptism, he stressed, is not merely a simple rite or a mere formality, but an act that “profoundly touches our existence.” “With Baptism we become immersed in that inexhaustible source of life that is the death of Jesus, the greatest act of love in all of history; and thanks to this love we can live a new life, no longer at the mercy of evil, of sin and death, but in the communion with God and with the brothers,” he said. Referring to a question often asked by the Pontiff, the Holy Father called on the faithful to search for the date of their Baptism, the date of their birth into the life of Christ and his Church. “But the risk is to lose the memory of that which the Lord has done in us, the memory of the gift that we have received. We end up considering it as only an event that happened in the past - and not even by our own will, but that of our parents -, that no longer has any effect in our present,” he said. “We must awaken the memory of our Baptism!” The Holy Father went on to say that this Sacrament in particular gives us the hope of walking down the path of salvation while making us “bearers of a new hope.” “Thanks to Baptism, we are capable of forgiving and to love even those who offend us and hurt us, that we can recognize in the least ones and in the poor the face of the Lord who visits us and comes close to us and with this Baptism helps us to recognize in the face of the needy, in those suffering, even in our neighbor, the face of Jesus. It is a grace of this strength of Baptism,” he said. The Pontiff reminded the faithful that Baptism cannot be conferred on oneself but rather by someone who administers it in the name of the Lord. “Baptism is a gift that is given in a context of solicitude and fraternal sharing. Always in history, one baptizes another, and another. It is a chain, a chain of grace,” he said. “But I cannot baptize myself. I must ask another for Baptism. It is an act of brotherhood, an act of filiation to the Church.” Concluding his address, Pope Francis exhorted those present to ask the Lord to experience in daily life the grace received in Baptism. In doing so, he said, “our brothers may encounter true children of God, true brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ, true members of the Church.” (J.A.E.) -Article provided by ZENIT News Agency.

We have been notified by St. Vincent Seminary that Deacon Bryan Holtz has been called back to his diocese and therefore will no longer be with us. He belongs to the Diocese of St. Augustine. We thank Deacon Bryan for the time that he was with us at St. Mark.
