Annual Report 2012 Dear Friends and Benefactors of Seton Catholic Schools, School is off to a flying start! The principals, and members of the School Board, assure me this is a good thing. I have always been a little afraid of heights, if you know what I mean. I have never been involved with the governing of a high school as I nervously ask God for help on a daily basis. I am, however, blessed to be involved with these schools that make up our Seton Catholic School system, the prin- cipals, teachers, staff, and Board members. Our enrollment has grown since last year. Two reasons are assumed for this growth. One is that parents want only the best for their children and the education they receive from Seton Catholic is just that in our community. The other is the state of Indiana’s school choice program which al- lows parents to choose the educa- tional pathway for their children. With this program, the percentage of our non-Catholic students has grown. This allows for more opportunities to shine, even in the non-Catholic households of Rich- mond and Wayne County. Little- by-little our schools’ light becomes a bit brighter, perhaps not as bright as our students’ brilliance, but brighter nonetheless. I offer my heartfelt thanks to all who make our schools pos- sible, especially the three parishes of the Richmond Catholic Com- munity who subsidize the schools to keep tuition as low as possible. I continue to offer thanks to our many benefactors who received a Catholic education and want to give something back so that students today may receive the same blessing. I ask for your prayers for all who work for the schools as they are paid, yes, but far below the rate for what they do. They work with love in their hearts. May God’s love be abundant in your lives as we are off to a flying start to this school year! Thoughts, thanks, and prayers, Fr. K Pastor Seton Students… Hard at Work & Play!

Annual Report 2012

Dear Friends and Benefactors of Seton Catholic Schools,

School is off

to a flying start! The principals, and members of

the School Board, assure me this is a good thing. I

have always been a little afraid of heights, if you know what I mean. I have never been involved with

the governing of a high school as I nervously ask God for help on a daily basis. I am, however,

blessed to be involved with these schools that make up our Seton Catholic School system, the prin-

cipals, teachers, staff, and Board

members.

Our enrollment has grown since last year. Two reasons are assumed for this growth. One is

that parents want only the best for their children and the education they receive from Seton Catholic

is just that in our community. The other is the state of Indiana’s school choice program which al-

lows parents to choose the educa-tional pathway for their children.

With this program, the percentage of our non-Catholic students has grown. This allows for more

opportunities to shine, even in the

non-Catholic households of Rich-mond and Wayne County. Little-by-little our schools’ light becomes

a bit brighter, perhaps not as bright as our students’ brilliance,

but brighter nonetheless.

I offer my heartfelt thanks to all who make our schools pos-

sible, especially the three parishes of the Richmond Catholic Com-munity who subsidize the schools

to keep tuition as low as possible. I continue to offer thanks to our many benefactors who received a

Catholic education and want to give something back so that

students today may receive the same blessing. I ask for your prayers for all who work for the

schools as they are paid, yes, but far below the rate for what they do. They work with love in their

hearts.

May God’s love be abundant in your lives as we are off to

a flying start to this school year!

Thoughts, thanks, and prayers,

Fr. K Pastor

Cardinal Classic Golf Outing:

The Tradition Lives On...

Walk-a-Thon 2012:

Taking Steps for Seton

This year's Walk-a-Thon to benefit the elementary school's parent/teacher group, Home and School, is taking place on Wednesday, October 24th. The goal for this year's walk is to raise $15,000 for new playground equipment and

other school needs.

Seton Catholic's 15th annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing to benefit Seton Catholic High School was record setting! Area businesses and individu-als recognize the value of Catholic education and are giving their time, talent and treasure to see Seton Catholic

High School continue to grow. This year was no exception! As 88 golfers took the course, and 43 businesses and individ-uals sponsored holes, the 2012 Cardinal Classic raised just over $10,000! Thank you to

all of our sponsors!

Is the Sacrifice Worth It?

“The giving up of oneself for the betterment of another” is a common definition of the word sacrifice. Just as Jesus died on the cross for us, giving of Him-self for our betterment; many people sacrifice daily for our students at Seton Catholic. Whether they are sacrificing their time through volunteering or giving up new cars, clothes or electronics, we witness teachers, parents, grandparents, and parishioners all giving something of themselves for

the betterment of God's children. But how do you know when your sacrifice is really worth it? We at Seton Catholic know the sacrifice is worth it when we hear their angelic voices singing “Jesus loves me” from the class-room. We know the sacrifices are worth it when a student stops to help another up from a fall. We know the sacrifice is worth it when we see our athletes en-couraging their opponents and building them up, rather than

tearing them down.

We also see the value in our sacrifices when we receive our ISTEP results back each year. This past spring our students finished at the top for Wayne County. Our elementary stu-dents boasted a 92.5% passing rate, 6.1% above their public school counter-parts; and the high school students a 87.1%, nearly 10% ahead of the county pack. The “proof is in the pudding” as some would say. The decision is yours...is the

sacrifice worth it?

Seton Catholic Schools’

Annual Fund 2011-2012

The message of the 2011-2012 Annual Fund, “One School, One Community, One Goal” has taken on a life of its own. It has become the theme that Seton Catholic faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends are embracing as we focus on becoming “One” Seton Catholic family through Seton Primary, Seton Intermediate,

and Seton High School.

The following list recognizes all of those who made a monetary donation to the Annual Fund during the past fiscal year (July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012). Together we were able to raise $33,427 for our schools. This money helps to off-set the needs of the schools that are not met through revenues derived from student tuition or other fund-

raising efforts.

Seton Schools have established the following gift circles to proper-ly recognize benefactors who

provide such a level of support.

Catholic High School Graduates Make Way More Money Than Everyone Else

Michael T. Owyang and

E. Katarina Vermann at the

St. Louis Fed are out with

some fascinating research

looking at school types versus

income.

They compared private

schools, public schools and

Catholic schools under various

conditions (rural versus urban,

high versus low drop-out rate

and starting teacher salary)

with future outcome for

students.

Here's what the found:

If you control for certain

aspects of students' socioeco-

nomic backgrounds, students

who attended Catholic schools

and schools that had high

teacher salaries yielded higher

incomes for students. Sending

your kid to a private school

was mostly a push in terms of

future earnings:

Owyang and Vermann write:

According to our esti-

mates, the wage premium

associated with attend-

ing a private high school

is much smaller than the

summary statistics in the

previous section suggest.

After controlling for indi-

vidual and job characteris-

tics, private high school

graduates earn 2.6 percent

more than their public

school counterparts. This

increase, however, is not

statistically significant.

In contrast, Catholic

high school graduates

earn a statistically sig-

nificant 13.6 percent

wage premium… This

result could indicate that

there are significant

differences in unquantifia-

ble aspects of school qual-

ity that could affect

earnings later in life.

The pair caution that correla-

tion is merely suggestive, and

that it does not follow that one

ought to be send their children

to Catholic schools if they

want them to end up with high-

er incomes.

Parental involvement, for

instance, was not controlled

for.

But the link is nonetheless

revealing.

Setting the budget for a family is challenging enough during these tough economical times. Imagine setting the budget for a Catholic school. Salaries and benefits account for 88% of the elementary budget; and 85% of the high school budget as seen below. Tuition alone does not cover this expense at either

of the school sites, nor does it cover operational expenses. Se ton Ca tho l ic Schoo l s is very blessed to have people committed to Catholic education who are willing to share their good fortunes with us. Through generous annual

fund donors, SCRIP proceeds and memorial gifts, we are

able to bridge the gap between tuition and expenses. This allows the ministry that is Seton Catholic Schools to continue to grow. Without your prayer and financial suppor t , Seton Cathol ic Schools would cease to exist. Thank you for all you give

to our school.
