As a long standing volunteer at the National Churches Trust I’m extremely touched by the thoughtfulness of the many people who, in a world of competing

charity requests, have recognised the pressing needs of places of worship.

In 2018 we received 12 legacies ranging from £500 to over £400,000. We are very grateful to all our legators for their generous bequests.

Their names have been added to our Book of Benefactors which records, with gratitude, the names of 786 supporters of our work who since 1954 have left a bequest to the Historic Churches Preservation Trust and to the National Churches Trust.

Many of the UK’s historic churches, chapels and meeting houses are fighting a battle against the ravages of time. Today we need to ensure that they get the repairs, maintenance and renovations they need to remain at the heart of local communities.

It is no exaggeration to say that without gifts in wills some of the UK’s church heritage could be lost forever.

How legacies help our work

Many people feel attachment to their local church. When those churches need to raise money for major repairs or putting in toilets or adding a community cafe they can rarely raise all the funds locally. Through our national grants committee we can direct legacy income to where it is most needed – we are a national resource locally delivered.

Vital legacy income also underpins our projects to help to keep churches open and active. These include our MaintenanceBooker service (www.maintenancebooker.org.uk), which help churches carry out essential work to keep their building in good repair and our ExploreChurches website (www.explorechurches.org) which showcases the UK’s wonderful heritage of churches and chapels.

Remembering the National Churches Trust through a legacy helps us to keep the UK’s precious church buildings alive for generations to come. That’s why we remember with gratitude the people who have helped us in such an important way.
