This is done in consultation with donors or may be approved posthumously following a qualifying gift as part of a will, bequest or other planned giving document. A complete list of our Benefactors follows. Over the years, many have passed away (indicated with an “*”), but their legacy continues in the hearts of all those whose lives their generosity continues to enrich. Individuals DR. Foundation Benefactors (As of March 23, 2020)

The Board of Directors may consider a donor for benefactor status upon cumulatively contributing $10,000 or more to Foundation endowment funds. This is done in consultation with donors or may be approved posthumously following a qualifying gift as part of a will, bequest or other planned giving document. A complete list of our Benefactors follows. Over the years, many have passed away (indicated with an “*”), but their legacy continues in the hearts of all those whose lives their generosity continues to enrich.

Individuals

DR. CATHERINE ARMSTRONG* – Always a supporter of the Foundation and our community, Dr. Armstrong became a benefactor when she left an unrestricted gift to the community. Dr. Armstrong came to Carlsbad in 1950 as the town’s first Board Certified pediatrician. She was the only pediatrician in town until 1978. Dr. Armstrong practiced medicine for 50 years, retiring in 2000. The Carlsbad Foundation Board will have the ability to distribute the income in perpetuity. Dr. Armstrong received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 1979.

CASSANDRA ARNOLD – Cassandra became a benefactor by pledging the proceeds of her life insurance policy. The proceeds from that policy will establish an endowment fund that will purchase a statuary for the Halagueno Art Park depicting the joy of children reading.

R0CKY* AND LINDA* AYCOCK – She served as a Board member from 1986 – 1992. Linda received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 2003.

FRANK AND FRANCES* BERTAGNOLLI – Frank And Frances Bertagnolli have supported the Foundation throughout the years with donations to a number of funds held by the Foundation and established the Sidney and LaVerne Bernard Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard Fund. Frank received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 2008.

FRANCES* BERNARD BERTAGNOLLI AND MARJORY BERNARD WELLS – Frances (Fran) and Marjory have established a Memorial Scholarship in honor of their parents Sidney and LaVerne Bernard. The scholarship will go to a nurse or nursing student that has related experience and the maturity and ability to maintain a 3.5 GPA. Margie became the first nurse-midwife in private practice in South Carolina, where she delivered babies and provided gynecological care for 34 years. Fran

was a director of nursing, nursing instructor and public health nursing coordinator before retiring from nursing to raise a family and help with the family business.

DICK AND JEAN BLENDEN – Dick’s involvement and dedication to the First United Methodist Church and its activities led to the Blenden’s gift to the Hugh M. Moutray First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. The income from the fund is limited to capital expenditures and became available in 2005.

JAMES AND SUSIE BINDEL – James and Susie Bindel have established the ATC Shooting Sports Fund. The fund is to help provide Southwestern NM with different sporting opportunities, while providing safety for those who practice their shooting skills.

BILLY AND CINDY BRYAN - The Foundation is pleased to have Billy & Cindy Bryan among our Benefactors. Clearly, education is important to them. In addition to their support of several scholarship funds over the years, they, along with their family, have been drivers in the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund for Loving High School students in memory of Cindy’s parents, C.M. & Dorothy Moffatt.

CHARLES AND PEGGY CABLE – Charles and Peggy Cable became benefactors in 2016. They have supported numerous charitable causes over the years, including Jonah’s House and the United Way.

MARTHA AND ROBIN CHAPMAN, HEATHER AND RUSSELL SMITH, RACKLEY FAMILY – Martha, Robin, Russell, Heather, Jerry, Janice, and their surviving families became benefactors of the Carlsbad Foundation. The Foundation was designated the recipient of a $10,000,000 donation by the families. This donation has funded the largest and most modern fire training center in the region.

MICHAEL J. AND MARY LOU CLEARY - The Cleary’s have always been very generous in the community with both their time and resources. Education is a key issue for them and one of the primary funds they support has been the Dr. Lisa Perozynski Memorial Scholarship.

LEON, D.P.M. AND HINDY* COHEN – Dr. Leon and Hindy Cohen, in memory of their son Allen, and in cooperation with the Carlsbad Mental Health Center, established the Treasure House Allen J. Cohen Memorial Fund for Developing Self Worth and Potential. The Treasure House used the income from the fund for job training activities of its clients in order to integrate them back into society with renewed basic skills. Dr. Cohen served as a Board member from 1972 – 1978.

A.J. CRAWFORD* – A.J. left an unrestricted gift of $500,000 to Carlsbad Memorial Hospital. It passed intact to Carlsbad Regional Medical Center and then to the Foundation with the closing of the Medical Center. Crawford’s gift constituted 25% of the Foundation’s initial $2,000,000 endowment.

ANN AND DANNY CROSS – Danny and Ann became benefactors in 2013. Both Danny and Ann are involved in multiple activities in the community and established a scholarship fund that benefits students attending St. Edward School.

JANIE COX - Janie Cox established the Ronald D. & Janie B. Cox & Family Natural Science Scholarship Fund. The fund honors her late husband Ronald, who taught biology in Carlsbad for 15 years and served another 25 years in administration at Carlsbad High School. She also has deep ties to education having taught French and Spanish, as well as running a preschool.

KELSEY MAE DAVIS* – The family of Ronnie and Jeannette Scott became benefactors when they established an endowment fund in memory of their daughter Kelsey Mae Davis. Kelsey was a victim of cancer at an early age. Annually, the family sponsors a barrel race from which the proceeds go to scholarships.

MIKE AND LINNIE* DAVIS-CURRIER – Benefactors, Mike and Linnie Davis – Currier have supported the Foundation in many ways over the years. Mike has acted as the Master of Ceremonies at the Annual Meeting for many years. Linnie served as Board member from 1998 – 2004, 2005 – 2011 and was Board President from 2009 – 2011. Mike received the A.J. Crawford Good Samaritan Award in 1983. Mike and Linnie received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 2012.

BROOKSIE* AND A.R. (RICHARD)* DONALDSON – Brooksie and Richard established their scholarship fund in 1991. Brooksie taught for 42 years at Loving Elementary School. Richard had farmed and ranched throughout his working life. Not surprisingly, their scholarship is earmarked for a Loving High School graduate with preference given to candidates planning to pursue studies in Education or Agriculture.

OSCAR* AND MARGARET DOWLING – The Dowling Scholarship Fund operated as a private foundation prior to its transfer to the Carlsbad Foundation in 1984. Oscar also strongly supported the Foundation’s Rotary Charity Fund and the Lifeline program. Largely as a result of his support, the Foundation was able to discount the regular Lifeline monthly charge for those having limited income. Oscar received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 1989.

RUTH DUEMMEL* – Ruth Duemmel became a benefactor in 2016. Originally from New York, she was well-travelled before making Carlsbad her home. As a new teacher, she applied for an overseas teaching position and when she was hired never looked back. She spent many years teaching abroad before returning to the United States full-time. Over the years, she has supported a diverse number of community needs.

NEAL AND CARLA DUNGAN – Neal and Carla have established a permanent fund, the income of which will be directed to youth programs undertaken by the First United Methodist Church. The monies are to be used to increase activities not currently being funded by the church. Neal has served on the Board from 1995 – 2001, 2003 – 2009 and 2013 – 2016, served at Board President 1997 – 1999, 2007 – 2008 and is the current Board President.

NORMA DUNN – Norma became a benefactor when she established the Class of 1962 Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student that not only has scholastic ability, but has worked or spent a lot of time in non-school related activities.

BERYL* AND WANDA DURHAM – Wanda established an architectural scholarship in memory of her late husband Beryl. This scholarship is awarded to an upper level architectural student from Carlsbad attending Texas Tech University. Wanda has served on the Board for three years.

LEROY & LORICA EHRLIC- Leroy and Lorica have been faithful donors to the Maurice P. Pardue Loving High School Scholarship for many years. Lorica is the daughter of Maurice Pardue. This scholarship is awarded to students attending Loving High School.

WILLIAM* AND IDA M.* FEATHERSTONE – William and Ida became benefactors by establishing a fund to benefit Class Act. Class Act provides a supervised closed facility on graduation night for Carlsbad Seniors. In addition, the fund supports beautification projects throughout our community. William received the A.J. Crawford Special Recognition Award in 2003.

CHARLES* AND FRANCES* FEEZER – Established in memory of Charles, the Feezer Fine Arts Acquisition Fund is used to acquire fine art for the Carlsbad Municipal Fine Arts Museum. The fund also received many gifts in memory of their daughter Betsy. Frances also contributed to a number of other funds at the Foundation, including the Founders Fund. Frances received the A.J. Crawford Arts and Humanities Award in 1996.

ROSS AND REBECCA FEEZER – Ross and Rebecca have become benefactors. Their donations support the Elizabeth (Betsy) A. Feezer Memorial Fund and the Charles Feezer Fine Arts Acquisition Fund.

GEMMA FERGUSON – Gemma became a benefactor in 2018 by generously contributing to the Foundation. Over many years Gemma has frequently donated to Founders Fund, Jonah’s House, and the Landsun Homes Caring Hands Fund, in addition to other multiple funds.

MARY FIELDER – In 2016, Mary established the Richard and Mary Fielder Designated Fund in memory of her late husband, Richard. The fund is designated for the benefit of the Carlsbad Public Library, where Richard served as a Board Member for many years.

HARVEY* AND VIRGINIA* FORT – Harvey originated the idea of the Founders Fund which allows contributors to be classed provisionally as Benefactors if they pledge $10,000 to the Foundation, with half going to the Founders Fund. Income from the Founders Fund is expended under the sole direction of the Foundation Board. The balance of the Fort’s contributions were placed in the Harvey and Virginia Fort Fund.

JAY AND TRACY FRANCIS - Jay and Tracy Francis became benefactors in December 2019. They have been supporters of the Foundation for many years and have contributed to numerous endowment funds for both scholarships and other charitable needs.

ROSEANNA GAETJENS – Roseanna became of benefactor when she established the Agnes Gaetjens Lieberwirth Memorial Charity in memory of her sister Agnes. Both Agnes and Roseanna were graduates of NMSU – Carlsbad and worked for the local hospital.

MIKE AND DEANNA GARRINGER – Mike and Deanna became benefactors when they established the Parks as a Classroom Travel Fund. The income from this fund will help with travel expenses for local students attending educational programs at our local parks. Mike served as a Board member from 2007 – 2013 and was Board President in 2012.

ALLEN AND HELEN GWINN – Allen and Helen along with their children Jeni and Casey, became benefactors when they made a large donation to the Arts and Humanities Fund. They were also instrumental in establishing the Neil Wills Memorial Scholarship. Helen received the A.J. Crawford Arts and Humanities Award in 2005.

M.H. (BILLY)* & JIMMIE* HARRISON – Billy and Jimmie became benefactors when they established the Presbyterian Youth Fund. The income from this fund will provide for activities of the Presbyterian youth not covered by monies usually budgeted by the Church. Eventually these funds could be used for a scholarship. Billy and Jimmie were members of the church for over 50 years and was very active with the youth.

DAN* AND ELEANOR* HARROUN – Eleanor was a volunteer at the old Carlsbad Memorial Hospital and continued her support as it made the transition to medical center and then community foundation. One of her main interests was the Assistance League and, not surprisingly, much of her support of the Foundation was directed to its endowment. Eleanor received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 1985.

JOHN AND JULIA HEATON – John and Julia have established an endowment fund, the income will benefit a cross-section of charities in the Carlsbad area. John served as Board President 1975 – 1977. John received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 1992.

LUCILLE HEIMER HENNING* – Linda and Rocky Aycock established the Lucille Heimer Henning Scholarship in memory of Linda’s sister Lucille who was a specialist in early childhood education. Lucille worked for the Los Angeles Public Schools for many years. The Lucille Heimer Henning Trust made a substantial donation to the Landsun Homes Caring Hands Fund in memory of their mother Dorothy Heimer. Mrs. Heimer lived at Landsun for 8 years and appreciated the fact that people could remain at Landsun if their funds ran out.

JODY HERNANDEZ* – Jody became a benefactor when she established a scholarship fund in memory of her son 1st Lieutenant George “Jorge” W. Hernandez. George was a 1995 graduate of Carlsbad High School and a 2000 graduate of the United State Air Force Academy. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Carlsbad Senior High School graduate who is involved in school activities and maintained between and 3.0 and 3.5 GPA.

HARVEY* AND WYNOLA* HICKS – Harvey and WyNola have been benefactors for a number of years. Initially, they placed their gift in the Founder’s Fund. Later, they established a separate fund in their names with the income expended at the full discretion of the Board. The Hicks’ interests include the Museum Fund, the Carlsbad Contract Bridge League Fund, and the S.E. New Mexico Historical Society Fund. Harvey served on the Board from 1989 – 1995 and from 1997 – 2003. Harvey received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 1997.

EDWIN* AND NETTIE* HILBERT – Ed and Nettie came to Carlsbad to retire, but not to hibernate. Extremely active as Chamber of Commerce Goaldcoaters they, along with Nettie’s sister Helen Yarmolinsky, were quick to smile and quick to lend support. From their estate they funded the Edward and Nettie Hilbert Scholarship in Theoretical Physics as well as an unrestricted gift to the Foundation.

BESSIE M. HOBSON – Bessie Hobson established the James C. and Bessie M. Hobson Noah’s Ark Fund in 2016. Right after retiring to Carlsbad in 2000, Jim and Bessie lost a beloved pet. As a result, they came to know about Noah’s Ark and the work they did with the spay and neutering program. Not only did they adopt a new pet, but they also determined they would keep the organization in their long-term giving plans. Sadly, Jim passed away in 2008, but Bessie generously put their idea into place by establishing the endowment fund.

ALICE* CARTER HOUSTON AND EDNA* PARKS CARTER – William H. and Susan N. Houston established the Edna Parks Carter and Alice Carter Houston Arts and Humanities Memorial Fund on behalf of the Houston family, including the Robert Carter Houston family, the Katharine Edna Houston Knorr family, and the A.C. Houston Lumber Company, a family business that served the Carlsbad area for nearly four decades until 1987. Edna served as

President of the Women’s Club of Carlsbad and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carlsbad for 57 years. She appreciated and collected the works of such early New Mexico artists as Joseph Sharpe and Fremont Ellis. Edna died in Carlsbad in 1987 at age 95. Alice also enjoyed the arts and frequently returned to Carlsbad for visits with family and friends until her death in 1995.

DAVID R. HOWARD* – David joined his brother Jed as a benefactor of the Foundation. David and Jed established the First United Methodist Church operating fund in memory of their mother Frieda S. Howard. The income from this fund is available for special operating needs of the church.

JARED “JED” HOWARD* – Jed has chosen to leave the proceeds of a $100,000 life insurance policy to the Foundation. The income from this gift will provide a continuing source of funds to support such organizations as the Southeastern New Mexico Historical Society and the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center. Jed also established the Heritage Preservation Fund to assist in the continuation of the many civic and cultural activities he has supported in the past.

ROSS HYDEN – Ross Hyden is a longtime supporter of the Foundation and has supported multiple charitable activities throughout our community.

SARAH* AND ROBERT* JACKSON – Bob and Sarah became benefactors when they established the Robert L. and Sarah B. Jackson Public Library Fund. Income from the fund is used exclusively for the purchase of new books. Sarah served on the Library’s Board from 1976 – 1999. Sarah received the A.J. Crawford Arts and Humanities Award in 1994.

OLIVE* AND PAUL* H. JOHNSON – In 1987 Olive and Paul became benefactors when they established a fund at the Foundation. Upon Paul’s death, Olive thought of the local NMSU branch where he had been Provost for so many years, and the nursing program in which he had been so interested and renamed the fund the Paul H. Johnson Nursing Scholarship Fund. In 1983 as Settlor for the NMSU – Carlsbad Memorial Trust, Paul was instrumental in its transfer from a local bank to the Foundation resulting in the NMSU – Carlsbad Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund.

WILLIAM “BILL” AND NADEAN JORDAN – Bill and Nadean became benefactors when they established the William “Billy” Jordan Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund in 1989 after their son’s death in an automobile accident when he was returning from an All – State Band Concert in Albuquerque. This scholarship will go to a graduating Carlsbad High School band student who exhibits high moral character, good citizenship and academic excellence.

FLORENE M. KANTO* - On May 14, 2014, Carlsbad resident Florene Kanto passed away at the age of 93. In her will, she designated a gift to the Carlsbad Community Foundation for the establishment of two funds – The John M. Kanto Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund, in memory of her son, and the Eva Rasman Lunsford Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund, in memory of her mother.

DON AND SARRAH KIDD – Early supporters of the Foundation, Don and Sarrah funded the Don and Sarrah Kidd NMSU Scholarship fund in 1981. The Fund assists students transferring to the main campus from the Carlsbad branch. Don’s continuing support is evidenced by the addition of Western Commerce Bank as our third Benefactor Organization. Don received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 2007.

BILL KINGSTON – Bill became a benefactor by supporting several funds at the Carlsbad Foundation. Bill was raised in Carlsbad as the only child of Arthur and Bertha Kingston (They received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 1990). While caring for his father, Bill earned his Master’s Degree in Education and is now working as a teacher for the Carlsbad Municipal Schools.

MR. AND MRS. KOONTZ – In 1984 CARC, Inc. transferred an endowment from the Koontz family to the Carlsbad Foundation, establishing the Koontz Family CARC Farm Fund. No restrictions were placed on how CARC, Inc. may use the income from this fund. The income from this fund is paid directly to CARC, Inc.

ROBERT* AND JOANNA* LIGHT – Always open to new ideas the JoAnna Wills Light Loving High School Scholarship Fund is one of the Foundation’s most imaginative and generous. Additional major support was also directed at the proposed Symphony Orchestra Project of the Carlsbad Area Arts and Humanities Alliance and the Grace Episcopal Church Second Century Memorial Endowment Fund.

In unrelated gifts of real estate, Presidents Park was moved to the Foundation and the City while acreage adjacent to the Branch College moved first to the Foundation and then to the Branch as it built its recent addition.

MARY E. LINDLEY* – In 1998 Mary honored the Carlsbad Foundation by naming it the beneficiary of a portion of her estate, as a result the Mary Lindley Memorial Scholarship was formed. Mary served as a teacher in West Virginia and New Mexico and became the first public librarian in the Carlsbad Municipal School system when she started the Hillcrest Elementary School library. She was an avid volunteer for the hospital auxiliary and received the Carlsbad Literacy Award in 1988.

VONETTA E. LINGLE* - Vonetta bequeathed a major portion of her estate to the Carlsbad Foundation. The Board established the Vonetta Lingle Fund. The income from this fund will address the needs of Carlsbad and South Eddy County.

RITA LONDON – Rita became a benefactor when she made the decision to establish a scholarship which will be funded with the proceeds from a life insurance policy she purchased. Rita’s career as an educator spanned 38 years; a teacher for 9 years and a principal for 29 years. Rita is a 1969 graduate of Carlsbad High School. Rita’s family received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 2013.

CHRISTINE* AND WILLIAM* MCADOO – Christine established the William and Christin McAdoo Endowment fund in 1989. This fund was established to help maintain the McAdoo Room at the Carlsbad Museum by allowing for acquisitions and educational materials pertaining to the Taos Ten Artists. The McAdoo Room contains a collection of the

work of the Taos Ten Artists contributed to the Museum by William and Christine.

KAY AND CLAUDE* McCAUSLAND – Kay and Claude established the St. Edward School Tuition Fund in 1994. Income is used to help students who might otherwise be unable to attend. Rather than name the fund after themselves, they decided to name if after the school, in hopes that others might be encouraged to add their support. Kay has also established an additional fund to assist with operational expenses of St. Edward School.

TOM* AND MARTHA MCILVAIN – Tom and Martha, both retired educators, have established the Tom and Martha McIlvain Vocational Scholarship. The scholarship was established in memory of their daughter Edie Vanlandingham, a school secretary, and because of Tom’s extensive involvement in vocational education throughout his career; Tom was a driving force behind vocational education in Carlsbad. Tom and Martha received the A.J. Crawford Special Recognition Award in 2003.

DR.* AND MRS.* GEORGE B. MARKLE, IV – In 1988 Dr. Markle funded the Donna Umstead Markle Nursing Scholarship Fund in her honor. Donna, a nurse in her younger years, died in 1991 following a protracted illness. Donna was a longtime Chamber Goldcoater. Donna’s friends and relatives contributed generously to the Fund established in her honor.

HELEN BOND MELTON* - Helen established the George and Amy Bond Memorial Public Library Fund. The purpose of the fund is to supply a permanent source of income to be used by the library exclusively for the purchase of new books. To quote Helen: “I wish this Memorial to be a celebration of my mother’s indomitable spirit and my father’s deeply rooted honesty, which he combined effectively with a conciliatory attitude. It is a celebration of my two brothers’ energetic and successful pursuit of life. As for me, this Memorial is an expression of gratitude for the education my family gave me at the expense of great personal sacrifice on the part of each one of them.” George and Amy were avid readers in an era long before instant communication. Their love of books, their desire to continue both their own education and their children’s, led to Helen’s belief that “a book is an enduring artifact, almost indestructible, capable of being used over and over by many people.”

MARY FRANCES MERCHANT* – Mary Frances became a benefactor in 2003. Mary Frances’ support of community organizations was broadly based, although she favored the Hospice program. She received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 1987.

NORMAN* AND BARBARA* MEYER – Norman and Barbara established the Barbara Allen Meyer Living Desert Endowment Fund. The income from the fund will be used to benefit activities at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park in Carlsbad.

JOHN* AND MILDRED MILLS – John was Executive Director of the Foundation from its inception to his retirement in 1995. Mildred’s involvement traces back to the business office and telephone switchboard at Saint Francis Hospital. They remained with the Foundation until her retirement in 1997. Supporters of the Founders Fund the remainder of the gift went to the Mills Family Fund for the Foundation.

TOM* AND SUE MORTON – Sue and Tom became benefactors when they established the New Directions Loan Program in 1990. This fund provides forgivable loans to students that have been out of high school for ten years and are changing occupations.

GIL AND VICKI MOUTRAY AND DONA MOUTRAY KIPPENBERGER – In 2000 the Hugh M. Moutray First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund and the Hugh M. Moutray Landsun Homes Fund were established by Gil, Vicki and Dona. These funds restrict the use of the income to capital expenditures and are unique in the fact that, until funds grow to prescribed amounts, the majority of the income is returned to the permanently endowed portion of the funds. Vicki has served as a Board member from 1993 – 1999, 2000 – 2006, 2010 – 2016 and 2017 to present. She was Board President 2003 – 2006.

HUGH M* AND WILLO DEAN* MOUTRAY – Gill and Vicki Moutray and Dona Kippenberger established two funds in memory of their parents. The funds are the Hugh and Willo Dean Moutray First United Methodist Church Fund and Landsun Homes Fund. Both endowment funds are unique in the fact that, until the funds grow to prescribed amounts, the majority of the income in returned to the corpus of the permanent portion of the funds. The income of both funds is restricted to major capital expenditures. Hugh moved to Carlsbad in 1930 and married Willo Dean in 1937. He made significant investments in the area, including ranching, farming, banking and investment in Nicaragua. He served as Vice Counsel to Nicaragua and on many other local and state Boards, including the State of New Mexico Investment Council. They were members of the First United Methodist Church.

HERMAN* AND CHARLOTTE* NAGEL – Herman and Charlotte established the Nagel Boys and Girls Club Capital Fund and the Nagel Boys and Girls Club Scholarship Fund in 1981. These were among the Foundation’s earliest funds. Both Herman and Charlotte were strong supporters of the Boys and Girls Club. Charlotte was involved with the then fledging Antique Show that was the Auxiliary’s main fund raising project. Herman encouraged community support of the Club by matching gifts made to the Capital Fund.

JOE* AND FLOY* NAHM – In her estate, Floy made a bequest establishing a fund in her and her late husband’s name. No restrictions were placed on how the fund’s income is to be used. Income is used to support south Eddy county organizations.

DEAN* AND OLIVIA* MURRAY NICHOLS – Dean generously established the Class of 1942 Scholarship and the Class of 1943 Scholarship in memory of Olivia. Olivia, a 1943 graduate of Carlsbad Senior High, was editor of the yearbook and secretary of her Senior Class.

JOHN AND STEPHANIE OVERSTREET – John and Stephanie Overstreet became benefactors of the Carlsbad Community Foundation in 2016. They are active in the community and have supported several funds that benefit area youth. John is well known for his expertise at Burba, Cole & Overstreet, which is an organizational benefactor of the Foundation.

ISRAEL PALMA – Israel Palma became a benefactor in December 2019. A long-time educator, Israel established the Linda Palma Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of his late wife Linda. Linda worked for many years at Landsun Homes and was a driving force behind the local Relay for Life event and the Cavemen Band Boosters. The scholarship was awarded to a student for the first time in April 2019.

BRUCE* AND HAZEL* PARDUE – Bruce and Hazel became benefactors in 1991. A major portion of their gifting was to the Maurice P. Pardue Memorial Scholarship Fund. In 1993 Pardue Limited became a Benefactor Organization. Bruce served on the Board from 1989 – 1995 and 1996 – 2002. Bruce received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 2004.

RUSS AND CLAIBORNE POWER- Russ & Claiborne Power believe in Carlsbad and have been supporters of many charitable causes over the years. The Powers were instrumental in establishing the Emergency Disaster Relief Permanent Fund. They have deep family ties in the area and their support of many endowed and non-endowed funds has been a great benefit to the community.

MIKE PULICE* - Mike’s gift was split, half going to the St. Edward Tuition Fund and the remaining establishing the Bataan Veterans Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be awarded to a student that needs financial assistance to attend college.

DORTHY “DOT” QUEEN – Dot became a benefactor after establishing the Landsun Homes Bullock/Queen Fund to benefit Landsun Homes. Dot established the fund to honor past and present generations of the Bullock Family. The Bullock Family came to the Pecos Valley in 1911 to bale hay. In 1912 they established Bullock Brothers Store. In addition, they sold feed, flour, coal, and seeds. The family also farmed. Dot served on the Board from 2005 – 2006.

DR. JERE AND NANCY* REID – Dr. Reid established an endowment fund in memory of his wife Nancy Jean. The Reid’s moved to Carlsbad in 1962. Throughout her career, she worked for Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, CRMC Hospital, as a doctor’s nurse and as a nurse for the Eddy County Detention Center and Carlsbad Juvenile Detention Center. Nancy also taught nursing classes at NMSU – Carlsbad. She was also past president of PEO Chapter “Y”, Assistance League, Eastern Star, First Methodist Church, and the NM Nursing Association. She also did physicals for Boy Scouts and served on the Conquistador Council for 12 years, all evidence of her love of nursing. Dr. Reid served on the Board from 1980 – 1987 and 1988 – 1994.

Dr. E.Z. Robinson* – Dr. E.Z. Robinson opened his Optometry practice in Carlsbad in 1949. He continued his practice in the community until 1969 when he sold it and practiced in Gallup, NM until retiring in 1977. He eventually returned to Carlsbad and was a member of Eddy Lodge #21 AF & AM, past president of the Carlsbad Rotary Club and a member of Elks Lodge #1558. Dr. Robinson passed away on November 17, 2015 in Carlsbad. Through an irrevocable trust, he left a generous gift to the

Foundation in support of its scholarship education fund.

RALPH* AND MARJORIE* ROE – In 1994 Ralph, longtime member of the Public Library Board, established the Ralph and Marjorie Roe Library Reserve Fund in memory of his wife. The funds income is to be used for the purchase of equipment, books and capital expenditures.

MIKE* AND NADINE* ROSENBERG – Mike had been the Foundation’s attorney since its inception and the hospital’s before that. When he died in 1992, Nadine established a permanent fund in memory of Mike. Nadine was also active in supporting the Museum Fund. Mike and Nadine received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 1989.

DOROTHY M. SCHULTZ* - Longtime Carlsbad English and Physical Education teacher Dorothy died November 14, 1988, at the age of 74. In her will she included the following proviso: “To the Carlsbad Foundation, Inc., the sum of $15,000 to use as a scholarship fund to assist students going to or attending New Mexico State University at Carlsbad. It is my will that the fund be established and known as the ‘Dorothy Marjorie Schultz Scholarship Fund’ with the interest only to be used as the Board may, in its absolute discretion, use as it deems best for the assistance of a student or students of the University.”

DAVE AND JAYANN SEPICH – Dave & Jayann established the Kathryn Jaye Sepich Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of their daughter Katie, whose life came to a tragic end on August 31, 2003 at the age of 22. Jayann served on the Board from 2005 – 2011. Dave and Jayann received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 2011.

GEORGE* AND JANIS SHOUP – George and Janis, longtime supporters of the Foundation, have supported a multitude of activities throughout the Foundation over the years.

WILLIAM AND CHARLOTTE SIBLEY – In 2016, the Foundation was honored to recognize Bill and Charlotte Sibley as new benefactors. Among their activities in the community, the Sibleys have generously supported the Brandon Casey Sibley St. Edward School Memorial Fund and the Savannah Sibley Memorial Fund.

ELMER SKINNER* – In celebration of its 50th anniversary, The Mine Supply Company established an endowment fund to honor Elmer L. Skinner, founder. Over the years Elmer expanded the operation to a multi-state operation with locations in Viburnum, MO; Mt. Vernon, IL and Albuquerque NM. Elmer believed that the success of the company was due to the 70 dedicated employees. Elmer, in turn, dedicated a large part of his time to public service for his community. He served as city councilman, Carlsbad Mayor, and NM State Legislature representative. He was past president of the Eddy County Sheriff’s Pose and authored Unvarnished Memories of my Posse Friends. Because of his involvement in the Deliver-A-Meal program the Elmer Skinner Deliver-A-Meal fund is used exclusively to offset expenses for the program. Elmer receive the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 2002.

JANE CARWILE SKINNER* – Because of Jane’s involvement in Assistance League, the Jane Carwile Skinner Memorial Assistance League’s Operation School Bell was formed. Jane was active in the League for 30 years, serving as president for 2 years. She was passionate about Operation School Bell which has clothed thousands of Carlsbad’s youth. Jane was a Board member from 1999 – 2005.

JOHN L. SKINNER* – John became a benefactor when the John L. Skinner Memorial Little Cavemen Football Fund was established in his memory. John received the first ever kickoff when the Little Cavemen Football program started in Carlsbad. The income is used to benefit the Little Cavemen Football program.

ARCH AND NELDEA SLATE – Arch and Neldea became benefactors when they established the Arch and Neldea Slate Endowment Fund to benefit the Carlsbad Foundation. Arch and Neldea established this fund to assist with administration functions of the Foundation. Arch was also instrumental in the Lifeline Program having installed equipment in hundreds of homes and he volunteers many hours a week at the Foundation.

EDWARD* C. AND CATHERYNE* A. SLEASE – Edward and Catheryne established their fund in 1996 and designated the use of the income to the Landsun Homes Caring Hands program to assist with associated care cost of those who cannot afford to pay.

BOB* AND MARGARET* SNOW – Bob and Margaret, longtime supporters of the Foundation, became benefactors when they supported the Edward C. and Catheryne A. Slease Landsun Home Caring Hands Fund.

JOE AND VERNA STELL – Joe and Verna established an endowment fund from which the income will benefit emergency charitable needs for individuals in Eddy County. The income from this fund will not become available until the corpus reaches $100,000.

CRAIG AND SHERI STEPHENS – Craig and Sheri are longtime supporters of the Foundation and have always supported the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad, Class of ’72 Scholarship Fund, Noah’s Ark, Carlsbad Battered Families Shelter and many other charitable activities.

CHARLES WILLIAM* AND VERONA FARRAND* TAYLOR – In 1993, Charles and Verona left a bequest to the Foundation. As requested, the funds were placed in a permanent fund in their memory. They did not restrict how the fund’s earnings are to be used.

LEONA THOMAS* – Leona, a longtime Carlsbad Chemistry teacher, left a bequest to the Foundation leading to the formation of the Leona Thomas Fund for Academic Excellence. Leona taught from 1943 until she retired in 1965. In her will, Leona placed no restrictions on the use of her bequest. In light of Miss Thomas’s career as a chemistry teacher, the Foundation’s Board earmarked income for school- based grants such as the Renaissance Program.

MARJORIE TOTTENHOFF* - Marjorie established the Mike Tottenhoff Memorial Scholarship Fund in 1993 in memory of her son Michael. Scholarships have been awarded to students living in Carlsbad or South Eddy County wishing to pursue studies in nursing at NMSU – Carlsbad or as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant at another accredited university program. In 2001 Marjorie made an additional large donation when she established the Riverwalk Recreation Fund. The income from the fund will provide equipment for the facility. Marjorie received the A.J. Crawford Special Recognition Award in 2004.

JON TULLY AND DEANNA TAYLOR – The long-term needs of the Carlsbad Community Foundation is the purpose of the Jon Tully and Deanna Taylor Fund established in 2016. The fund is to provide flexible support to the organization and its mission in future years. Jon has served as a member of the Board of Directors since 2014.

HELENE ULRICH* - Helene established the Stephen Kehrman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Stephen, who was Helene’s grandson, died in an auto accident in 1989 while he was a Senior at Carlsbad High School. In 1988, the year before his death, he received the A.J. Crawford Good Samaritan Award for rendering aid at a highway accident north of Carlsbad.

WINIFRED “WINNIE” VAN CLEAVE*, R.N. – She is known to most of us as Winnie, former head of the AWARE Program for teenage mothers. Her husband Phil, was a vigorous supporter of the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park. After his death, she established the Van Cleave Natural Sciences Fund benefiting the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park and Carlsbad Municipal Schools natural science projects. A scholarship for teenage parents (boys or girls) is also named in her honor. She was living in Texas at the time of her death in May 2017. Winnie received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 1986.

GAYLORD* “BUCK” AND PHYLLIS* WEAVER – During his lifetime Buck established an Educational Loan Fund at the Foundation. The fund helped students wishing to attend the Colorado School of Mines. In her will, Phyllis left a portion of her estate to the Foundation establishing the Phyllis Coudert Weaver and Gaylord Chase Weaver Fund. Expenditures are at the sole discretion of the Board, except that they may not be made for maintenance.

RAY AND KAREN WESTALL – Ray and Karen have become benefactors by generously contributing to the Foundation and too many of the agencies that have funds established here.

FRANKIE WHITE* - Frankie supported the Foundation over the years. Frankie chose to support the Founders Fund, from which the income is expended at the discretion of the Board, for the communities needs at the time. Frankie served our community in her professional and personal life. She always played a major role in the family business (White’s City), including manager of White’s City Gift Shop and troubleshooter for C.L. and Jack White. Besides her professional career, Frankie found time to create the first gift shop and snack bar at the then-new Memorial Hospital; was a founding member of Assistance League of Carlsbad, and was chairman of the first Assistance League Home Show. She also served on the Board at Western Commerce Bank. The White – Dugger Family received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 2010.

LOUIS* AND JANELL WHITLOCK – Janell, family and friends established the Louis Whitlock Memorial Scholarship. Starting in the fall of 1999, it has been awarded to students who have the potential to be driving forces in the community. Both Louis and Janell have been active in Carlsbad and instrumental in its continual development. Janell served on the Board from 2006 – 2012 and was Board President 2011 – 2012. Louis received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 1998 and Janelle was the 2014 A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award winner.

BILL* AND MARY* WILLIAMSON – Bill was a member of the Board from 1988 – 1994. He was of particular assistance to the Board in matters involving real estate. Having initially established a Land Acquisition Fund at the Foundation in 1990, Bill and Mary subsequently transferred its assets to the Founders Fund.

JOE* AND ALYCE* WILLIS – Alyce established the Joe Willis Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Coach Joe Willis. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Carlsbad High School Senior.

NEIL H. WILLS* - in 1969 Neil assigned certain potash royalties to Saint Francis Hospital that subsequently passed to Carlsbad Regional Medical Center and then to the Carlsbad Foundation. In 1979 it was determined that these royalty rights were sufficiently beneficial to the Foundation to qualify Mr. Wills as a Foundation Benefactor, and he joined A.J. Crawford as the Foundation’s second benefactor. In 1991, Allen and Helen Gwinn, familiar with his history as a philanthropist, established the Neil H. Wills Scholarship Fund in his honor.

LESLIE MESSER WILSON* - Billy and Angelia Messer established the Leslie Messer Wilson Scholarship Fund in memory of their daughter Leslie. This scholarship will be given annually to a sophomore nursing student. Leslie graduated with honors from Carlsbad High School in 1995 and went on to college at ENMU. She married Kody Wilson from Bovina, TX on June 28, 1997 and was accepted into the nursing program that same year. In the months after Leslie was diagnosed with cancer and spent a great deal of her time in the hospital, she never lost the dream of someday receiving a degree in nursing and being able to work with cancer patients.

R.T.* AND LUCILLE* WRIGHT – The Wright family established a permanent endowment fund in memory of R.T. and Lucille Wright. This year, the fund awarded its first scholarship to a Loving High School graduate.

Organizations

AMERICAN LEGION POST #7 – The American Legion Post #7 received the A.J. Crawford Community Service Organization Award in 2004. Annually, they award scholarships and support local charitable activities.

BURBA, COLE & OVERSTREET LLC – Burba, Cole & Overstreet became a benefactor organization in 2016. Among their generous contributions to the Foundation, they established the Burba, Cole & Overstreet LLC Charity Fund in 2007.

CARLSBAD INSURANCE & REAL ESTATE – In 1990, when owned and operated by Oran Means, the organization became the Foundation’s first benefactor organization. They were a longtime supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad. Oran Mans received the A.J. Crawford Humanitarian Award in 1991.

CARLSBAD NATIONAL BANK – A long-time supporter of the community and the Foundation, Carlsbad National Bank officially became an organizational benefactor in 2016. Over the course of many years, they have supported multiple endowment funds at the Foundation, which support long-term needs in our community.

CHEVRON – Chevron became an organizational benefactor in 2016. The company plays an active role in charitable activities throughout the area. In addition to their support of the Founder’s Fund, they have been actively involved in supporting the Early college High school and the Oil & Gas Summit.

CONOCOPHILIPS – ConocoPhillips became an organizational benefactor in 2020. ConocoPhillips has supported Founders Fund along with multiple funds throughout the Foundation. Many of which support local activities within the community.

DEVON ENERGY CORPORATION- Devon Energy Corporation has been actively involved in the community in the recent years and supports many charitable causes. Devon is a strong supporter of numerous local activities and established a Foundation scholarship fund to support students in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field.

DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS CAVERN CITY CHAPTER #13 – The Cavern City Veterans Fund was established in 1996 to provide for the needs of the veterans of Eddy County.

FIRST AMERICAN BANK – A generous gift was given to the Foundation from the Cockburn Charitable Trust that was established at First American Bank. First American Bank chose to give the money to the Foundation to enhance endowed scholarship funds. This donation will benefit students for many years to come.

INTREPID POTASH-NM – Hugh Harvey and Bob Jornayvaz purchased the Mississippi Potash Mining properties in March 2004. They established an endowment fund that will provide scholarships.

La Tienda Foods, Inc. – The Foundation welcomed La Tienda Foods, Inc. as an organizational benefactor in 2017. The organization has long been an active supporter of community activities and made a generous gift to the Founders Fund in support of the Foundation’s charitable mission.

McCORMICK, FORBES, CARAWAY & TABOR – The firm became a benefactor organization and a Founder’s Fund supporter in 1990. Former partner Jay Forbes served as the Foundation’s attorney from 1992 – 1996. He served on the Board from 1991-1992.

MERLAND, INC. - Merland, Inc. may be a new organizational Benefactor, but it has been a long-time supporter of charitable causes and the Foundation for more than 20 years. With assets in New Mexico and West Texas, the company has provided a lot of support to the Emergency Disaster Relief Permanent Fund, as well as other funds in support of the history of the area and housing.

NUCLEAR WASTE PARTNERSHIP – Nuclear Waste Partnership has been the management and operating contractor at the Waste

Isolation Pilot Plant since 2012. Always a strong community partner, the company became an organizational benefactor at the Foundation in 2018. NWP has supported the Founders Fund, in addition to many other funds at the Foundation that support community needs.

PARDUE LIMITED – The Maurice P. Pardue Loving High School Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the owners and staff of Pardue Limited in 1993. The late Bruce Pardue was a past board member and received the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award in 2004. Bruce and Hazel Pardue are Foundation Benefactors.

WESTERN COMMERCE BANK – In 1991, WCB pledged its annual support of the Founder’s Fund and became a benefactor organization. Bank President Don Kidd was an early supporter of the Foundation, who, with his wife Sarrah, became benefactors by establishing the Don and Sarrah Kidd NMSU Scholarship Fundin 1981.

WASHINGTON TRU SOLUTIONS LLC – In 1993, Westinghouse Electric Corporation, the predecessor company to Washington TRU Solutions, established a scholarship fund at the Foundation.

WELLS FARGO BANK – Wells Fargo Bank is a benefactor organization having supported numerous funds at the Foundation.

XTO Energy – An ExxonMobil Subsidiary, XTO Energy became one of the Foundation’s organizational benefactors in 2017. In addition to being a cornerstone donor for Friendship Park, which was the community’s first usable playground for children with special needs, the company has also made a generous gift to the Founders Fund in support of the Foundation’s charitable mission.
