COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT WELCOME TO THE 2014 SCHOOL YEAR I trust all had the opportunity to have some rest and relaxation and quality family time over the summer school holidays. Once again this year we have another record enrolment in St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools (SAPSS). The total enrolment is 2466 with 1041 enrolled at St Joseph’s Regional College, 806 at St Paul’s High School, 337 at Newman Senior Technical College and 282 at MacKillop Senior College. This year we have enrolled 425 in Year 7 with 200 at St Paul’s and 225 at St Joseph’s Regional College. We have added a ninth stream at St Joseph’s Regional. This is the maximum enrolment that will flow through to bring St Joseph’s Regional to its planned capacity enrolment of 1,200. In addition to the 425 new students joining us for Year 7 we have another 150 new students enrolled in Years 8-11. It is important for students and parents to know that, despite the large overall enrolment, we ensure that pastoral care classes and other classes are kept relatively small. Most classes in the junior secondary school have an average size of 25 and we restrict technology electives in Years 9 and 10 to 22. In Years 11 and 12 we support many very small classes for specialist HSC course. Several classes, especially extension courses, have just a couple of students and the overall average for senior classes is less than 20 students. We are fortunate to have a wonderful staff made up of 198 teachers, 80 support staff (secretarial, administration, finance, teachers’ aides, grounds, maintenance and cleaning) and 25 Gap year trainees. We especially welcome all those who are new to our schools and also welcome back students in Years 8-12. May 2014 be a year filled with success, happiness and many blessings for all who are part of the SAPSS family of schools. OUTSTANDING RESULTS Higher School Certificate results are released in the last school week of the year so there is no opportunity to congratulate students in the school newsletter. Some of you may have seen our ‘congratulations’ and other reports in local papers. Both MacKillop and St Joseph’s Regional had many students with ATARs above 90 as well as many other impressive results. The top ATARs were: Ben Woodward 98.70, Jack Connolly 98.40, Katie McCosker 98.20, Andrew Newbound 97.25, Molly Ratcliffe 97.15, Annabelle Thorne 96.45, Alex Crawford 96.05, Bryden Sloan Harris 95.90, Christopher Spencer 95.85, Katelyn Ward 95.85, Amanda Hunt 95.75, Hannah-Jayne Shilling 95.70, Ryan Ambrose 95.20, Crystal Phillips 94.60, Olivia Tierney 93.85, Sophie Hodge 93.50, Mahni Lewis 93.30, Emily Dykstra 92.85, Lana De Maria 92.55, Samantha Barrie 91.70, Sophie Freeman 91.70, Ashleigh Wall 91.65, Lachlan Nixon 91.55, Kolby Kemmett 91.50, Bronte McKell 91.50, Ella Roberts 90.80 and Taylor Kennedy 90.80.

Pictured: Mr Michael Walsh, Mr Brian Hazell, Mrs Genine Howard, Mr Kim Eichmann, Mr Paul Redfern, Mr Andrew Blackmore and Mr Jeremy Buckley

Other notable achievements included Katie McCosker who was named among the State All-Rounders having achieved 90+ in 10 or more units. We also had the following nominations or selection in subject with a project or practical component: Emily Dykstra (ArtExpress), Ashleigh Hales (OnStage), Alex Small (Encore), Isabella Kanturek (Callback), Lachlan Wilson, Adam Jackson, Brodie Savage and Rohan Ellis (InTech). Many HSC students from Newman also did well. A total of 21 students were awarded ‘Early Entry’ to university in a range of degrees including Nursing, Business, Marine and Education. This represents only a small percentage of Newman’s graduates as most follow a pathway into apprenticeships, traineeships and other employment. Their success in helping students achieve these career goals is the best in the State. Congratulations to our 2013 graduates and to their dedicated teachers! Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE On behalf of the staff of St Joseph’s Regional College I wish to extend to all families a very warm welcome back to the 2014 school year. An enrolment of 1041 students certainly sends out a strong message of faith that families place in our College as a centre fostering Christ-centred Learning. Indeed, this sentiment is reflected in Statement of Learning for 2014:

At St Joseph’s Regional College we will foster Christ-centred learners; enabling them to think creatively and critically, communicate and collaborate effectively; and to build relationships based on respect resilience and responsibility.’

By relating according to the Gospel values we proclaim, this year we want to make a special effort to incorporate the key words of this statement into the language we use with our students. Firstly we have the 4 high order proficiency words of thinking critically and creatively, communication and collaboration (4 c’s) combined key aspects of growth in character; relationships, respect, resilience and responsibility (4 r’s). This year it is our intention to embed these words into the language we use with students. Staff New to St Joseph’s Regional This year we welcome, Mr Kim Eichmann (Legal Studies), Mr Andrew Blackmore (Music), Mr Michael Walsh (PDHPE), Mr Paul Redfern (Mathematics), Mr Brian Hazell (Science), Mrs Genine Howard (English) and Mr Jeremy Buckley (Business Studies). We also welcome back Miss Sonia West after a two year absence at St Paul’s Kempsey. Sonia will fulfil the role of Leader of Macquarie House this year. I also welcome back Mrs Claire Goldie (Science) who returns to her fulltime position this year. To Mrs Jenny Raczka (Office) and Mrs Deanne Fyffe (Canteen), we wish you well in your respective roles.

NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION 2014 As our student intake increases at St Joseph’s Regional College, it has become evident that there is a need for the College to be more cost and environmentally efficient in the distribution of the newsletter. Therefore, from Term 1, Week 2 2014 the College newsletter will be emailed to all families. We understand that for some families this is not always the most convenient way of receiving the newsletter, as such, hardcopies will be available for students to collect each Friday from the College canteen; the newsletter will also be available for viewing on the College website.
