ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE THANK YOU

A big thank you to staff and parents for participating in our Term 1 Parent-Teacher Interviews. It is wonderful to see and listen to parents and teachers discussing student progress and how both parties can further assist students in their learning. We certainly know that parents play a very important role in student success and happiness at school and welcome the partnership and communication between teachers and parents.

Congratulations and thank you to Mrs Claudette Stace and our Creative Arts staff, as well as Mr Phil Shelley and Mrs Claire Goldie for their time in taking away our senior students this week. These experiences provide a great benefit to student learning as they approach their HSC. EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP

As Term 1 comes to a close and we prepare for Term 2 I would like to share with you a new partnership the College has engaged in for the next two years. We have formed a partnership with ‘Real Schools’; an organisation committed to developing caring students and connected communities. In particular our partnership will be developing and implementing a Restorative Practices approach to be used at the College. What does this mean?…. This means, staff and students will work together to “build relationships based on respect, resilience and responsibility.”

In a world where technology has rapidly replaced human conversation we will deliberately look to give staff and students the skills to have a life of meaningful and fulfilling relationships with peers and others. For teachers the partnership aims to enhance their skills to RESPOND rather than REACT to student behaviour.

We would like to invite parents to be a part of this wonderful partnership. Parents have the opportunity to learn the same strategies teachers are using and to gain a greater understanding of the approach teachers will be using with your sons and daughters. Come along and gain some valuable tips in raising sons and daughters to be caring young individuals who are able to develop positive relationships as they enter into young adulthood.

On Tuesday, 21st April at 6:00pm Adam Voigt, founder of Real Schools, will be presenting to parents here at the College. The previous day, Monday, 20th April (Day One of Term 2) will be a pupil free day so that Adam can work with all staff and on Tuesday he will be in classes working with teachers and students. WINTER UNIFORM

A reminder that all students are to return Term 2 in full winter uniform.

- Both boys and girls shirts must have the top button so that ties can be worn correctly. This includes ties for both boys and girls.

- Girls are also asked to ensure their skirts are the correct length, i.e touch the top of the knees NOT above the knee.

- All students are reminded that jumpers must be in good condition and students are not permitted to wear jumpers that have frayed or holey cuffs.

- We would also ask that any student who began the year in incorrect shoes, i.e rubber toed and others that are not ALL leather, plain black, polishable shoes need to have the correct ones for the commencement of Term 2.

- Holidays are also a common time for piercings and new hairstyles. We remind parents and students to check the diary to ensure new trends meet college standards.

ANZAC DAY ANZAC day this year falls on the Saturday and as a result there is no Public Holiday for schools. The ANZAC March has always been a wonderful opportunity for the College to unite with the other Catholic schools in St Agnes’ Parish, to show our appreciation to those members of our community who fought for the Nation’s freedom and safety. It also allows us to show our support to the current members of our Armed Services, many of who are former students of the College. Whilst Student Representative Council and Community Service Representatives students have always been expected to attend the ANZAC March I warmly invite and encourage all students to participate in the 2015 March. It is a great opportunity to show your sense of community and citizenship as a young Australian and will be recognised on student’s reports and Year 12 References. Students are asked to wear full winter uniform and meet outside Beau Thai Restaurant on the corner of Horton and William Street Port Macquarie between 9.15-9.30am. YEAR 7 2016 It is already that time of year where we begin the enrolment process for our 2016 Year 7 students. Students in our Catholic feeder schools will receive their enrolment packs prior to the end of Term 1. This week Mr Tim McCosker, Sarah Stewart, Mitchell Steep, Max Roods and Grace Robb along with staff members Mr Phil Pares and Mrs Tobi Harris visited St Joseph’s Wauchope and St Joseph’s Laurieton. Next week Mrs Eichmann and some students and teachers will be visiting St Joseph’s Port Macquarie and St Agnes’ Primary Schools. Students attending non-feeder schools are asked to call into the College office to collect a pack. If you are aware of friends or siblings wishing to enrol please let them know as places have filled over the past few years. The Year 7 2016 Enrolment Open Night will be held on MONDAY 27th APRIL in the College Hall.

Year 11 & 12 Leadership Team and College SRC are getting ready for the Easter Raffle raising money for Caritas. ALL students are asked to bring in one Easter egg to contribute to the raffle. CSYMA LEAD is a Student Leaders Conference that seeks to draw leaders in School Youth

Ministry Teams throughout the CSYMA Network to gather, be equipped in ministry and formed in faith. LEAD also seeks to resource Youth Ministry student leaders to return to their School

Communities ready to share their faith with their peers. The Gathering will be a chance to bring students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate with others who practice their faith.

The gathering will allow students to build relationships with other students from throughout the Diocese as well as a chance for students to talk and share their faith journey and peer to peer ministry.

What: Hastings Macleay LEAD – is a youth gathering for students from St Agnes Parish Secondary Colleges, St Paul’s College Kempsey, St John Paul College Coffs Harbour and McCauley College Grafton.

God, our father loved us so much, he sent his son Jesus to live among us, to share our lives, to share our suffering and to share our death. Most importantly he was raised to new life. That is the joy of Easter. Despite the darkness of the suffering and death of Jesus, there is light and hope because of his resurrection. This is why we have a holiday. TUTORING UNSW MEDICAL STUDENTS TUTORS FOR STUDENTS We have just formed an exciting partnership with the University of NSW Rural Medical School students and the College. A number of parents often request details of tutors who are available to provide extra one-on-one tuition and support for their sons and daughters. Below is a list of University students studying Medicine here in Port Macquarie who are looking for tutoring opportunities. Parents may contact the student directly to make arrangements and negotiate fees, times, days, venue etc. All arrangements and agreements are between the parent and the tutor however we would advise parents to be conscious of ensuring the tutoring is in an open environment. For students in Years 7-9 we also have some Year 11 & 12 students available for tutoring work. Please contact Cath Eichmann for details. If a venue is required, University of NSW Medical tutors or current SJRC senior student tutors may use the College Homework Hub for tutoring between 3.30-4.30pm Monday -Thursday (ONLY). NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY 2015

In May 2015 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of these tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indication their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained. The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 12 -14 May 2015.

In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school. Students should bring their calculator, a HB pencil and eraser to school for use on these days. NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF HSIE Year 9 Canberra Excursion A reminder to Year 9 students, please return permission and medical notes to the College office. The cost of the excursion is $440 which will cover accommodation, all transport, meals (except lunch on the trip down and dinner on the trip home) night activities, all entry fees and educational programs at venues. Please note that a non-refundable deposit of $100 is retained by the College once you return the permission note securing your son’s/daughter’s place and allowing us to confirm final numbers for booking purposes. Camp Gallipoli As part of special commemorations this year for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign the SAPSS Colleges (St Joseph’s Regional College, Mackillop College and Newman College) are organising a bus load of Year 11 and 12 students to attend a special ANZAC commemoration called Camp Gallipoli. This unique event is occurring simultaneously at various locations across the country.

The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for our youth to support ANZAC Day as participants rather than spectators. The venue our Colleges will be attending is Centennial Park in Sydney. It is a two day event 24th April and 25th April. There will be entertainment (Jon Stevens and Mahalia Barnes, Imogen Clark), special guests, movies, documentaries, great food options and a very special Dawn Service on ANZAC Day itself.

This is a swag only event and students will be required to sleep at the venue. The cost for the event is $150 which includes transport, entry, entertainment and meals while at the venue. Our current project is painting and making a 1/32 scale Roman Bireme ship with 63 crewmen and over 600 parts. (see picture). It is free to join the History club, all paint, brushes and models are provided. Students will be taught the various skills to make models.

History Club is after school on Wednesdays from 3.30pm until 5.00pm, students must make sure that they can make it home after this time. Students do not have to commit to every Wednesday; please let Mr West know if you will not be there. Why not come along and see what it is like. No problems if you decide it is not for you.

MUSIC - FRETWORK Last week Year 8 students enjoyed the humour and talent of the legendary guitarist Terry Murray, who took the students on a music journey through 70years of Rock music in a one hour show that showed many styles of music, types of guitars and components of a rock band. All the students will remember Terry Murray because "that's his name" as well as his Uncle Tony. 2015 SJRC Cross Country

The annual SJRC Cross Country is being held on Tuesday 31st March here on the College ovals and surrounds. It is a compulsory event for year 7 - 10 and our seniors will have the option of running at lunchtime. The top five runners in each division will be eligible to attend the Diocesan Cross Country Carnival being held at Grafton on the 21st May. It is definitely a house competition with points awarded for 1st to 10th and everyone else receiving a participation point towards the house tally.

Year 7 may wear their sports uniform all day on cross country day.

The program for the day is as follows:

Period 1 & 2 - Year 7 & 8. 12s, 13s & 14s - 3km Course

Period 4 & 5 - Year 9. 14s & 15s - 3km & 4km Course

Lunchtime - Year 11 & 12 (optional). 16s, 17s & Opens - 4km Course

Period 6 & 7 - Year 10. 15s, 16s & 17s - 4km Course

All races are timed. Age champions, runners up and SJRC Cross Country Squad will be named on times.

st Apr Northern CCC Rugby League Trial – Smithtown Selection at Dio Winter Sport Trial

Sport choices for term 2 listed below- The selection program will open at 6:00am on Friday the 27th March and close Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm. It is first in best dressed. Students only need to make one selection. If the resubmit screen comes up after you submit your selection, you are in.

Schools Cup Netball On Wednesday, a group of 19 girls competed at the School's Cup Netball competition at the Macquarie Park netball courts.

Team A consisted of Ebony Williams, Olivia Coram, Sophie Neuman, Gabbi Foster, Ashleigh Woodbury, Sophie Marchingo, Megan Camilleri, Brydie Frankland and Sophie Roberts. These girls had a very successful day winning 5 of their games and going down in the other 2.

The girls involved in team B were Taylah Debreceny, Jesse Willis, Elousie Sprague, Jayme Clarke, Mahala Hopwood, Georgia Smith, Caitlyn Rogers, Abbie Trotter, Amelia Stennett and Sarah Litjens. Although they were not as successful on the day, the girls played some great netball winning 2 of their 7 games.

All girls involved showed great team work and school spirit on the day. Thank you for a great day.
