Here are hints on how: 1. Gather your materials and lay them out on a clean, flat work surface. Make sure you have enough space, then roll out enough wrapping paper to fit around the entire gift with a few extra inches left over. Remember to remove the price tag from the gift before wrapping it. 2. Measure the package and cut the paper to size. Put the gift face down in the middle of the paper. Bring the paper from the long side of the box, up to the middle of the package. Pull both sides tightly so the paper hugs the package smoothly. Tape it closed. 3. Turn the package so the open end is facing you. Fold the right and left edges, pushing the sides in next to the box, to form flaps. 4. Fold the top flap down to the box, pull tightly and tape. Fold the bot- tom flap up tightly and tape. Repeat on the other side. 5. Now, decorate the package. You can paste on silk flowers, tinsel, candy canes, old greeting cards, pictures cut from mag- azines, pinecones, jingle bells or tiny toys to make the box even more intriguing. You give a gift to the environment as well as the recipient when you use paper-based packaging for your presents. Paper and paperboard can be reused and recycled and are made from a sustainable, renewable and recyclable resource. Consider this: Last year alone, 52.7 million tons, or 66.8 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S., were recov- ered for recycling—a record! Every ton of paper recovered saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. In addition, paper is made from a renewable re_source—trees that are sustainably grown, managed and harvested. U.S. forests and forest products offset 10 percent of annual U.S. carbon dioxide emissions. That’s like removing 108 million cars from the roads each year. Paper-based packaging is also easy to ship. Choosing The Right Books And Toys For Children This Holiday

(NAPS)—Finding the toy or book that’s right for yourchild may be easier than you realize. The key is to findone that is a good fit for the child’s level of develop-ment. To help, here are some tips from Dr. Jody LeVos,Learning Designer at LeapFrog: Selecting Books• For Babies and Toddlers: For this age group, booksmust be durable. Board books and books made withplastic or washable cloth allow the inevitable book-in-mouth occurrence. Colorful illustrations with high-con-trast images appeal to this age group, and it’s not sur-prising that so many books for this age feature imagesof faces—babies love them. Finally, it’s helpful to findbooks that prompt participation. • For Preschoolers: At this age, children are learning about their feelings, preferences and roles through theirexperiences with family and friends. Look for books about everyday life and childlike characters. Choose bookson academic subjects to help prepare your child for school.• For Kindergartners And First Graders: Look for a book that builds on your child’s interests and passions.Digital reading experiences are perfect for this age range, such as LeapFrog’s Tag Reading System. Selecting Toys• For Babies and Toddlers: At one year, find play experiences that foster curiosity about objects and environ-ments. Move on to toys that explore basic academic skills such as colors and shapes. Also, introduce moresophisticated playthings such as foam puzzles and blocks, clay and dough. • For Preschoolers: Find toys that consist of multiple parts that can be grouped in various ways, such as blocksthat differ in shape, size and color, and games that require turn-taking. • For Kindergartners: Find toys that require some setup or construction, and games that involve multiple steps.Books, maps, puzzles and figurines can support children’s growing interests, foster questions and deepen their

appreciation for theirfavorite topics. • For First Graders: Lookfor toys that require sym-bol use, such as letters, numbers and icons withinstructions, and educa-tional video games, suchas those available forLeapFrog’s LeapPad2 andLeapsterGS. LeapFrog is a leader ineducational entertainmentfor kids and the recipientof more than 1,200 indus-try and parent awards. To find books and toysthat follow these guide-lines, visitwww.leapfrog.com/best-toys.

When buying a toy orbook for a child, the key isto find one that’s a goodfit for your child’s level ofdevelopment.

(NAPS)—This holiday season, you may enjoy the festivi-ties more by spending less time on everyday chores likelaundry and more time with family and friends. Here’show to do just that: • Enlist the troops—Getting the rest of the family to helpout will help you make more time for everyone to spendquality time together. Before guests arrive, assign taskssuch as starting the wash, transferring the clothes to thedryer and folding so everyone is doing his or her fair shareof the load. • Location, location, location—With guests in and out andthe kids home for winter break, your laundry room maysoon start to look like Grand Central Station. One way tooffset traffic jams is by setting up designated stations fordelicates, lights, darks or specialty items. Have a fewcolor-coded laundry baskets lined up neatly next to thewasher and dryer. Label each

one and let everyone drop off items that need to be washed as necessary. • Become an expert in efficiency—An influx of laundry doesn’t have to mean significantincreases on your utility bill. Try to wash loads during off-peak hours to save on energy. This is also when high-efficiency washers and dryers can come in handy. For example,Amana’s 3.6_–cu. ft. model is Energy Star qualified and uses up to 73 percent less waterand 84 percent less energy than others its size. It has a low-water wash system that uses aslittle as 13 gallons of water with concentrated detergent to penetrate soil and stains. Learn More For more information on home appliances, visit www.amana.com or call (866) 616-2664.

An energy-efficient washing machine can mean less trouble and expense when you havelots of laundry to do.

(NAPS)—Getting that perfect holiday toy can be easier said than done. Bydedicating some time in advance, you can buy toys that are meaningful butalso provide added play experiences for months to come. To make holidaytoy shopping easier, it is important to determine the play value that toys willprovide (from techy to nurturing), define your budget before you hit the mallor Internet, and start early, as many must-have items are sure to be hard tofind as the holidays get closer. Jim Silver, toy expert and editor in chief of TimetoPlayMag. com, says thathaving a well-chosen variety of toys helps children use different play skillsand styles. “It is important to understand what your kids want and how theyplay in order to create a balanced play experience as they grow.”To make your holiday toy shopping easier, here are a few tips to consider: 1. Think long term: Some toys are all about the “wow and now” and are like-ly to be tossed aside once the novelty wears off. To extend the play span oftoys, look for items that have play extensions beyond the box. This caninclude accessories that add on to the main toy, online content that adds tothe storytelling, or multipurpose toys that add value. For example, BarbiePhoto Fashion Doll is not only a doll but also a digital camera. This integra-tion of toy with technology serves as a smart investment, providing the childwith a toy that has multiple uses. 2. Set your budget: Decide whether you want to buy one big, impressive giftand a few stocking stuffers or several moderately priced gifts. If you have children of similar ages, consider if a single, costly gift can be shared. Sharedplaytime makes for great childhood memories while encouraging cooperation. With millions of households owning iPads, toys that are integrated with iPadapps can be an affordable way to encourage family play and leverage the household’s existing tablet. Using apps for iPad, new Hot Wheels Apptivity Carsturn 1:64 scale Hot Wheels cars into tiny game controllers, blending physical and digital play into one. The app is free to download, and in addition to theHot Wheels Apptivity apps, there are offerings for boys and girls of all ages, including Fisher-Price, Monster High and popular leading apps and entertain-

Add variety by giving some high-techtoys complemented by basic toys, such asdolls and cars. The ability for kids to role-play and create their own stories with toysand play sets should not be underestimated.

Toys like the new Monster High High School allow kids to use MonsterHigh content as a starting point to build and create their very own storieswith the dolls and accessories. Allowing kids to generate their own storieshelps foster creativity and imagination. 4. (NAPS)—While treasured holiday customs such as decorating, baking and entertaining are all part of what makesthe holiday season a cherished time for family and friends, they can increase the risks for home fires and seriousinjuries—but not if you put safety at the top of your holiday “to-do” list with these tips:• Check that electrical decorations have a certification label from a nationally recognized testing laboratory, which indicates that they have been tested for safety.• Inspect all electrical decorations for damage before use. Cracked or frayed sockets, loose or bare wires, andloose connections may cause a serious shock or start a fire.• Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights together. These lights require a surprising amountof energy and can overload the

electrical circuit. LED lights use less power, letting you safely connect more strings.• Do not overload electrical outlets. Overloaded outlets and faulty wires are a common cause of holiday fires.• Protect cords from damage. Power and extension cords should never be pinched in doors, windows or under heavy furniture. Do not placecords

under carpets or rugs, and never nail or staple them to the wall or baseboard.• Check for freshness when purchasing a live Christmas tree and keep your tree fresh by watering it daily. Dry trees are a serious fire hazard.• Use battery-operated candles instead of traditional candles. Candles are responsible for 45 percent of fires involving holiday decorations.• Keep combustibles, including presents, stockings and the Christmas tree, at least three feet from heat sources such as the fireplace or spaceheater.

Heat sources that are too close to decorations are a factor in 48 percent of home holiday decoration fires.• Stay in the kitchen when something is cooking. Unattended cooking equipment is the leading cause of home cooking fires.• Turn off, unplug and extinguish all decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house. Half of all home fire deaths occur

between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.Learn More For further safety tips and tactics, visit the experts at the Electrical Safety Foundation International online at www.esfi.orgor call (703) 841-3229. Unplug and extinguish all decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house.

(NAPS)—According to the American Research Group,Americans spend an average of $646 on holiday gifts ayear, and that’s not including what they spend on the restof their holiday trimmings. It can be challenging to have cash left in your pocket atthe end of the holidays, but employing a variety ofstrategies can help your bank account stay in the blackwhile you deck the halls with the red and green. Here arehints that can help:• Use coupons. In addition to the ones in the paper, ahelpful place to find them can be CouponCabin.com,with its thousands of coupons for online and in-store useat everywhere from large retailers to small, independent-ly owned businesses. The site’s wide variety of guaran-teed-to-work coupons means you’ll be able to savemoney no matter what your plans are this holiday sea-

son.• Lower your smartphone plan: Almost everyone who has a smartphone loves it, which means they use it all thetime. But what if you could give up some of your services for just a few months? Try going back to the basics andkeeping phone use to a minimum to save nearly $50 over the several weeks. • Go cable free: Holidays are typically the busiest times of the year, leaving little time for TV watching. Get rid ofthe extra cost for cable and save as much as $100.• Switch up your workout routine: Consider swapping a pricey gym membership for outdoor exercise or mall walk-ing in rough weather. Depending on your membership fees, you could save as much as $100 per month.• Raise your deductibles: Be extra careful this season and increase the deductibles on your car and home insurancepolicies. Going from a $250 to a $1,000 deductible could mean a savings of around $100.• Sell stuff: Before you fillyour closets with evenmore stuff, take a quickinventory of items youalready own and don’t use.Consider holding a garagesale or auctioning or sellingyour items online to easilyput $50 or more in yourpocket.• Haggle away: A recentstudy from ConsumerReports found that thosewho asked for a discountgot one nearly 80 percentof the time.
