A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKThis first Sunday of Lent, we hear of the Covenant God made with the people at the time of Noah, the Covenant of the Rainbow. Next Sunday, we will hear about the Covenant of Faith between God and Abraham. Then we will come upon the Covenant of the Law made with Moses. They all lead to the Eternal Covenant of the Paschal Mystery that we celebrate at Easter.

This week’s focus is on a beautiful rainbow. We all enjoy the spectacular sign in the sky and it makes us feel good. A rainbow forecasts better weather. God sealed His covenant with the human race with this beautiful gesture; assuring the human race that God sees the good in the world. He will not give up on humankind in general or as individuals.

The word Lent is derived from a Teutonic word meaning Spring. Lent is the time for a new beginning. The rainbow is here and God’s love is pursuing us once again. May we have the determination to begin again. May we have the courage to allow God’s love to overtake us.

Lent is the perfect time to spring clean the soul for the approaching feast of Easter. The Church has recommended three basic disciplines during Lent. One of them is Fasting. Abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays of Lent are obligatory. Fasting on simple, less filling meals is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for those eighteen years old and not yet fifty-nine years old. Additional forms of abstinence are highly recommended, at this time, like less T.V. or computer for more scripture or spiritual reading. Less foods that are enjoyable for acts of charity to others. Less conversing, texting and more prayer with God is another form of fasting.

Help kick off a year to remember! Our Diocesan 150th anniversary begins March 3, 2018 You are cordially invited to join Bishop Malooly at the Diocese of Wilmington’s Sesquicentennial Kick-off Mass on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Peter, Sixth and West Streets in Wilmington. Gather and pray with Catholics from across Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Wilmington by Blessed Pope Pius IX on March 3, 1868.

INSPIRE Prayer for Vocations: Father, we're your people, the work of your hands.
So precious are we in your sight that you sent your Son, Jesus.
Jesus calls us to heal the broken-hearted,
to dry the tears of those who mourn, to give hope to those who despair,
and to rejoice in your steadfast love.
We, the baptized, realize our call to serve.
Help us to know how.
Call forth from among us priests, sisters, brothers and lay ministers.
With our hearts you continue to love your people.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever.

It is the first Sunday in Lent and the Gospel message reminds us today that we should, “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Jesus’ gospel message is one of love and forgiveness, and believing in this message, one should be drawn to repent. Like Jesus, we too are tempted. However, unlike Christ we often fall to these temptations. What temptations do you struggle with? Do you find yourself falling to the same temptations and struggling with the same sins? As these sins and

temptations are drawn to your mind, bring them to God. Embrace the truth of forgiveness, and repent, by participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

We know the words, “Where charity and love are found, there is God.” While we tend to focus on charity, especially at Parish Outreach, the love component is just as, if not more, important. Charity and Love go hand in hand in the way we approach our generosity, especially to the less fortunate among us.
Recently, we have seen those who are in need soliciting for cash assistance in the parking lot after Masses. While the temptation to help is admirable, sometimes a cash hand out isn’t always the best solution for those truly in need. To help address this, Outreach is now providing emergency food bags and information postcards in the back of the church during the weekends when we are not open. If someone expresses a need at Mass, please direct them to one of the ushers. They are trained to assist. Outreach is equipped to help those truly in need by meeting with them and addressing their needs in terms of food, and clothing, as well as other social services. Thank you for your continued generosity to our vital ministry.

    MEET THE RCIA CANDIDATE

MARRIAGE MOMENTS: Rolling your eyes, a scowl, ignoring a request by walking away can speak louder than a yell. Check out any belittling mannerisms you may have that hurts your spouse.

PARENTING POINTERS: February is Black History month but sensitivity to people of a race different from your own is bigger than just one color. As a family, learn about a race different from your own this month. *Provided by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

My name is Ashlee Maney, I am a senior in the Nursing Technology Program at Conrad Schools of Science. I live with both my parents and they have been such a great support system throughout my journey in RCIA. Some of my hobbies include playing volleyball and softball. Also I am president of my schools HOSA-Future Health Professionals chapter, and a member of National Honor Society.

My Aunt/Godmother, Mary Ann Peirson, called me one day after volleyball practice telling me about RCIA and I was so excited. It’s something I had been wanting to do since I was a child. She is also my Sponsor, and I couldn’t ask for a better advocate than she has been throughout my RCIA journey.

The RCIA process has definitely changed my outlook on life and has made me more aware of God’s presence in my life. I feel like a completely different person. When I’m having trouble in school, with

family and friends, or just life in general, I turn to God and he guides me in the right direction. I have found new encouragement in life.

Before RCIA I did not attend Mass. In the beginning of the process, I was scared to go because I didn’t know what to do or say. But since I started RCIA I now attend church every Sunday. I now understand the importance of Mass, and actively participate. I now love going to church every Sunday!
