“Well, I certainly could have handled that differently. I certainly could have been more caring, kinder, or, at least, not so abrasive.” Images of past situations often plague us. There are times that we could have been more understanding of a person’s situation, or less harsh in giving an answer. I think maturity makes us aware that many times a reaction could have been handled differently. Being right does not excuse us from charity. Plenty of people, and all of us plenty of times, have used truth to hurt rather than to help.
“When I was a child, I used to talk like a child, think as a child, reason as a child. When I became a man I put aside childish things.” Why did St. Paul attach this to his great paean to love? What does being a man not a child have to do with “love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous, it is not pompous, it is not inflated, or rude, or self-serving, or quick tempered, or sulking, etc.? Simply enough, a child has to be taught to be patient, and kind, not jealous, etc. Some never learn the lesson and remain childish. Sometimes all of us are spiritually immature.
Love is patient. Patience is difficult. It is something we want everyone else to have with us while we put limits on the patience we have with others. Patience is a learned virtue that we experience and wisely will imitate.
Love is kind. Kindness is something we all want to experience, and again, may not extend. Those who extended this grace to us when we most needed it are giving us the formula to use ourselves.
St. Paul tells us that he had a great deal of growing up to do and he did. Remember he, at first, persecuted Christians thinking he was doing right to eliminate them. Then, he encountered the Resurrected Jesus and with God’s grace made a radical change of himself. “When I was a child.....” We all have a lot of growing up to do to live as Christians. But that’s OK, the Lord is not done with any of us yet.
The flu, virus and cold season is upon us. Please remember that if you are seriously ill, there is no sin in avoiding Sunday Mass and recuperating. Stay at home and get well without spreading any sickness. The health department always reminds us that in order to limit illness at this time, wash your hands more often, and avoid close physical contact with other people. As for the Sign of Peace at Mass, simply avoid hand shaking or embracing. Also, please abstain from taking the Precious Blood from the chalice. This thoughtful consideration will keep us healthier.
- Fr. Joe

LITURGICAL INSIGHTS Sacramentals: Blessed Palms
Sacramentals are those “sacred signs which bear a resemblance to the sacraments” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1667) and can lead one to seek a deeper holiness and friendship with God.
One such sacramental is the palms we receive on Palm Sunday. They are blessed, because the priest prays a benediction and then showers them with holy water. They tangibly remind us of the palm branches that the hopeful Jews wave before our Lord, the long-awaited Messiah, as He rides triumphantly into Jerusalem. More especially, the palms make us participants in this jubilant celebration, since the Mass erases time and makes the past present.
These blessed palms are brought home and, traditionally, placed behind the crucifix that hangs in the home. Throughout the year, whenever we see the crucifix—and therefore the palms—in our home, we are reminded how quickly the crowd’s exultation turns to betrayal, which makes us consider our own faithfulness to Christ and His commandment to love God and neighbor.
While Palm Sunday is two months away, Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, is celebrated in just over a week. This year, Lent begins on February 10, when we will gather to receive ashes on our forehead to exhort us to “repent and believe in the Gospel” and to remind us that “we are dust, and to dust we shall return.”
Traditionally, the ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday come from last year’s blessed palms that are burned. Burning them is the primary sign of reverence for them, since they are blessed.
Throwing them out in the trash may be likened to throwing away a rosary, something that is never to be done.
In order, therefore, to properly and reverently make room for this year’s fresh blessed palms, we invite our parishioners to bring last year’s palms from their homes to church next weekend (Feb. 6-7) and to place them in the baskets by the statue of the Holy Family in the vestibule. They will then be burned for the distribution of ashes the following Wednesday, Ash Wednesday.
Please make sure palms are unbound, that is, not tied with rubber bands, twist-ties, etc. and that they are loose, that is, not bagged.

1st Birthday this coming Wednesday! February 3rd, 6pm-7pm in the Church.
Friends, come join us as we celebrate 1 year of offering Refresh to our parish. Every Wednesday we play contemporary Christian music, offer time for reflection, evening prayer, and networking. It’s an opportunity for a mid-week retreat for our parish. Will you come join us and celebrate this week?
We start promptly at 6pm and end no later than 7pm. All are welcome, and we promise, all will enjoy!
We share these words from new visitors:
“Thank you so much for the warm welcome we received at the prayer service on Wednesday night. It was just beautiful! A powerful prayer service with the lovely music, the Psalm, the Gospel, intentions, meditation and lighting the candles. It was very moving and we all enjoyed it. Like Sonyia said, you all sounded great. Thank you again.”

The modern concept of liberty is "freedom from interference", with conscience no longer calling us to duty. Dr. Anthony Esolen from Providence College contends that the writer Dante, in his Divine Comedy, reminds us what a human person is and what freedom is for. Prof. Esolen, an acclaimed translator of The Divine Comedy, will present a lecture on this topic on Tuesday February 16, 2016 from 7:30 - 8:30 pm on the University of Delaware campus, 206 Kirkbride Hall. The presentation is free, open to the public, and sponsored by the Society of Catholic Scholars of Delaware, the UD Department of Philosophy, and the St. Thomas More Society of Delaware. For information, contact Mary Ann McLane, [email protected], 302-740-3114.
God speaks to His people through the prophet Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born I dedicated you.” Our God knows us intimately; our God has a plan for each of us. What are you doing to discover God’s plan for your life? Could it be that He’s calling you to a life of religious ministry for the good of the Church? If you think so, call or write Father Norman Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). Be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!
Learn about the life of the first person born in our Diocese to have an official cause for canonization.
The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington has produced and released a short video on the life of Maryland Eastern Shore native, the Rev. Paul Wattson, SA, (1863-1940) - also known as Father Paul of Graymoor - who may be the first person born in what is now our Diocese, to be a canonized saint.
Father Paul was born in Millington, Maryland. He founded the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, initiated the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity that we celebrate each January, started programs for the homeless and those who suffer from addiction, co-founded the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, published magazines, produced radio programs, and much more.
A link to the video, “Father Paul of Graymoor, Apostle of Unity and Charity: A Great Call to be Radical,” is on the Diocese of Wilmington’s homepage – www.cdow.org, and is available on the Diocesan YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/dioceseofwilm.
Lenten Journey of Mercy with Pope Francis: February 22 and 29; March 7 and 14
We invite you to join us at St. Joseph on the Brandywine parish for a four-part Lenten series presented by Sr. Sally Russell, SSJ, exploring the Three Pillars of Lent—Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. Following a lecture and discussion format and using the lens of Pope Francis’s call for a Year of Mercy, Sr. Sally will explore the concept of mercy through the Trinity, Gospel Call to Conversion, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. All programs will be held in the Parish Family Center from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. on the following Mondays: February 22 and 29 and March 7 and 14. Although walk-ins are welcome, we request that attendees register in advance by contacting Michelle Hogan, 302.622.8878 or [email protected]. Meet the RCIA Candidate Jessica Riviere
I was born and raised in southern New Jersey. I have two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother. We were born and raised in the Catholic Church and attended Sacred Heart as an adolescent. I graduated from Wilmington University with an undergrad and a graduate degree in Finance. I am employed at a chemical company, Chemours and work in the Treasury department.
I am married with three children ages 15, 7 and 18 months. My hobbies are primarily being involved in my children's lives including various athletic and academic extracurricular activities and most recently, with their spiritual growth at St. John the Beloved. As a family we enjoy traveling, watching movies, shopping, and playing in our backyard. So long as we are together, we have a good time!
As I have matured and achieved every goal I set for myself, I was still never fully satisfied with my life. Something was missing and I know now it was God. I felt incomplete without sharing with my children this wonderful gift of knowledge and faith in our Lord. I felt deeply in my heart that the decision to join RCIA and CCD was the right one. I knew that I benefited from getting to know His will and wanted my children to have this same opportunity.
I think RCIA has made me more conscious that because of God I have received and continue to receive many blessings. I am learning so much about Catholicism, things I had forgotten or never knew as a child. I am happy to be back at the Church and learning about what it actually means to be Catholic.
RCIA is providing me with the necessary tools so that I am aware of what is happening in the Catholic community. I am able to follow the liturgy, but still have some work to do! I appreciate the teachings from RCIA on the various prayers, saints, periods in time, etc...mentioned in the Bible. The more I learn, the more my desire to learn grows which is beneficial when discussing religion with my family. I truly appreciate the Catholic tradition and all that RCIA has provided to me.
