In 2002, the U.S. Bishops in their statement, “Living the Gospel of Life" said, "To focus on the evil of deliberate killing in abortion and euthanasia is not to ignore the many other urgent conditions that demean human dignity and threaten human rights, such as poverty, violence and injustice. Any politics of human life must work to resist the violence of war and seriously address issues of racism, poverty, hunger, employment, education, housing and health care."

But where does one begin? The question is easy to answer. We must begin with a commitment never to intentionally kill, or be complicit in the killing of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, unformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem. We must speak out against the culture of death so common in our society.

On this Respect Life Sunday, it is easy to become discouraged. Look at all the work we’ve done to end abortion, to protect every human life from violence and then we see that there are still laws in place which allow killing the unborn, euthanasia, capital punishment and the war in our own communities. On those days, when we feel sorry for ourselves, we have a friend from today’s reading of Habakkuk, who cried out "How long, O Lord? I cry for help, but you do not listen!! I cry out to you, violence, but you do not intervene."

To Habakkuk and to us God replies: The vision still has it’s time -Not your time – But God’s time. The day will come when every human life from the first moment of conception to the last natural breath will be protected and nourished and respected. God’s day will come. We are called to work for the kingdom of God. We are to preach the Gospel of Life with every resource at our disposal. And, we are to stir into flame the gift God gave us. But at the end of the day, the work of defending human life is everyone’s.

-Fr. Joe

VOCATIONS In today’s second reading, St. Paul exhorts us to “guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.” That “rich trust” is the divine life which God has given us in Jesus Christ, and guarding it involves learning to listen for God’s voice. The more attuned we become to God’s voice, the more likely we are to discover the unique vocation to which He calls us. As you listen more and more closely, has it ever seemed that God might be calling you to live as a priest, a deacon, a religious brother or a religious sister? If the answer is “yes,” let’s talk. Call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). And don’t forget to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!

It’s time to celebrate - St. John the Beloved School has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School! This program recognizes public and private elementary schools based on their overall academic excellence. Every year the U. S. Department of Education seeks out and celebrates great American schools, schools demonstrating that all students can achieve to high levels. The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. It takes a village to be honored as a Blue Ribbon School. We thank Vice Principal, Mrs. Mary Lou Soltys, for working so hard in completing the report that was submitted but this award is a “family” honor. We thank our parishioners for your interest, involvement and as always, your financial support. When you see the National Blue Ribbon flag gracing the front of our school, be proud and remember that you are a big part of this accolade.

2015-16 SJB Annual Report

"You can't judge a book by its cover" is an old adage so don't be alarmed when I ask you to read an official Annual Report. Take the time to open it and scroll through the pages. I think you will be delighted at its contents. It is not just a dry accounting of bank statements and financial information. Rather, it is a summary of 2015-16 in pictures and narrative. Check to see if your child is included! You will learn that we are a school of Academic Excellence, Community, Service, and Worship! Access the 2015-16 SJB Annual Report by going to our website www.sjbdel.org. You won't be disappointed!
