EPIPHANY A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE BY BUD OZAR

After meeting Jesus, the Magi returned home by “another way.” What in your family needs to be done “another way?” Do you need “another way to resolve differences, to communicate or show affection? This is a new year, time to change what isn’t working. Take a tip from some wise men, there’s always “another way.”

    FROM THE PASTOR

GOOD NEWS FROM THE CLOSE OF 2015

Mildred V. Staley died September 26, 2012 at the age of 87. I think her maiden name was Werbanec, though I’m not sure. I knew Mildred personally, but never met any of her family: Her husband Joseph died the year before I arrived as pastor.

She had been a faithful worshiper at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish for years before her death. She told me in 2010 that she was especially pleased to see the parish consolidate to one worship site, which since then has become the new St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.

At her death, Mildred wanted most of her estate—just recently settled—to go to the capital campaign. Hre executrix, Susan Cammarata, is shown at left hand-delivering

a check for $136,728 to the SEAS Parish capital campaign on December 22, 2015. (It came just in time, before the close of the campaign on December 31, 2015.)

Please remember to say a prayer for Mildred—may she rest in peace! And please pray for the other benefactors of the parish, living and dead.

Union Electric Steel, under the leadership of Robert G. Carothers, has been a major supporter of the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. SEAS Parish recently received another $10,000 for the food pantry from Union Electric Steel. Thank you!

Seminarian Joe Uzar and pastoral associate Luke Briola visit for the holidays. For Joe it’s a break from his last year at St. Paul Seminary, before he moves off to theology later in 2016. Joe is expected to receive his B.A. in philosophy from Duquesne University in May.

For Luke it’s a break from his doctoral work in theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Luke will be speaking again at our annual commemoration of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton—this year, a vespers service at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 4. All are welcome.

When the former Saint Ignatius church was “relegated to profane but not sordid use,” the artistic and devotional patrimony of the church became my responsibility—either to destroy it, or to repurpose it in another sacred building. Two of the windows were put to use in our own Immaculate Conception Chapel (on weekends, the “cry room”). The other windows and many other sacred furnishings went to Ave Maria Chapel, still under construction in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. The Stations of the Cross, however, remained. (Samples at right) Beautifully carved in high-relief, they were extremely difficult to remove from the walls—that is, without destroying them. Local artisans Jeff & Chris Novak preserved them and parishioner Tom Cannon crated them for us.

The Stations stayed in our church basement until last week, when they were claimed by Our Lady of Lavang (Vietnam) Church in Virginia Beach. Patrons Mr. & Mrs. Jimmy Nguyen (shown at right) donated $2,400 to SEAS Parish and took the Stations to Virginia Beach. Their new church is expected to open in June.

Many people work hard to make possible so many special Masses for the Christmas holy days. Please note, among others: • Decorators Paul & Diane Eberlein (of Szafranski-Eberlein Funeral Home), Vince Dlugos, Bob &

Lucille Herman, Barb Lynch, Rege Reaghard, Bernice Zyzak; • The Knights of Columbus for helping with Christmas parking and for coordinating the distribution

of over 1,000 books—Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly; • Nick Will, Charles Wilson, Lori Dedola, and the Parish and Contemporary choirs for all the

extraordinary music; • the many other liturgical ministers—i.e., ushers, readers, greeters, altar servers (and their parents!),

and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion for the longer and difficult hours.

Remember that the second collection for the St. Anthony and De Paul Schools on January 17 counts also as a gift to the Parish Share Program—the most efficient way of giving to the parish. Remember also that with the elimination of 26 special collections for 2016—the monthly capital campaign, the monthly parish education, and January “initial offering,” and the September “catechetical Sunday” collections, I am asking you to consider redirecting gifts from these collections into the Parish Share Program.

SEAS Parish encourages donors to switch from offertory envelopes to electronic giving—a monthly debit to your checking or credit card account. It’s safer, cheaper, easier, more reliable, and friendlier to the environment. You can sign up at www.faithdirect.net using parish code PA591, or ask for a paper application. To make a one-time gift via smart phone, use the QR code at left.

    SEAS EVANGELIZES

As we continue to work our way down Kevin Cotter's list of evangelization desires of

Pope Francis, we come to one that fits well with moving into a new year:

Get Out of Our Comfort Zone

I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the

streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a Church concerned with being at the center and which then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures.—Evangelii

    Gaudium

So, what are your New Year's resolutions? Do they include being a stronger

Catholic, reaching out more, wanting to develop a habit of sharing more with

others and being less self-concerned? Is volunteering in one of our many parish ministries, so as to be put into situations where it is more easy to reach out, on

your list of things to do in 2016? As Fr. Robin often says, "The Church exists to get you and me to heaven." Consider joining in the fun of helping yourself and

others get and stay on track! Have a joy-filled New Year!

Consoling the Heart of Jesus A Pre-Lenten/Lenten Retreat to be held on 10 Tuesday evenings

    ~7:00-8:30 p.m.~ here at SEAS beginning January 12, 2016

Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, author of the renowned “33 Days To Morning Glory” Marian Consecration program offers another great ‘retreat’. This retreat is in the form of a 10-week dvd/faith-sharing program that brings together several spiritual traditions and blends them in the pattern of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. We will find inspiration in the quotations from the saints that Fr. Michael gathers carefully, and in his deep, but humble, understanding of the principles of holiness that they proclaim. This is a great way for souls to live the Holy Year of Mercy, and a wonderful way to prepare for, and go through Lent, 2016! If you are interested: register by giving your name, phone number and email address to our receptionist at 412-276-1011 ext. 210 stop by the parish office to purchase your book (Mon-Fri 8:30-4:30) for $5; there is no required reading before the 1st Session. [Please purchase your book in advance, so that we know whether we need to order more than our initial supply!] come to the 1st Session on Tuesday, January 12th at 7:00 pm.

NOTE: Registration is very important in case of a weather cancellation! Also, your registration helps us to determine how many will be in attendance, so that we can determine our SEAS meeting space. This retreat will not be held without a minimum of 5 participants (we have 12 so far!). The more, the merrier!

R.C.I.A. Begin your New Year with a new start in this exciting process through which adults and older teens become Catholic. It is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Presently there are several candidates participating in our parish preparation sessions and they would surely welcome more followers who would like to learn Jesus, live Jesus and love Jesus through an exploration of the teachings of the Catholic Church. We will continue our weekly evening sessions on Tuesday, January 5, 2016. Call the RCIA Office now at 412-276-1011 ext. 225 for more information or to register. Could this be a New Year’s Resolution for you to extend an invitation to your loved ones or friends?

Each winter, there are families across the Pittsburgh region that have no heat or are living in unsafe conditions due to failed or outdated heating systems. The Heat For The Needy program, described as a “One Day Miracle”, combines the time and talents of employees and their families as they provide and install new furnaces in the homes of those needy families, all in a single day, and at no cost to the recipients. Over the past 16 years, the Heat For The Needy program has provided and installed over 170 new heating systems

to families throughout the region. The program is made possible through the generous efforts of over 125 volunteers at TUDI Mechanical Systems, local suppliers and business partners who have donated supplies and services. We are currently seeking nominations for low-income individuals and families in need. Once all nominations are evaluated, TUDI will choose 12 to 15 nominees to receive new furnaces. Nominations can be received from family members, friends, neighbors and even strangers who wish to touch someone’s heart during the holiday season. If you’d like to nominate someone for this “One Day Miracle”, please visit www.heatfortheneedy.com. Deadline for nominations is Jan. 8th 2016. To nominate someone, please send a detailed letter or visit heatfortheneedy.com to fill out a nomination form. The more detailed the better. The individual must own the home to qualify.
