RAFFLE TICKETS AVAILABLE TODAY! Every registered family at SEAS Parish is asked to sell at least one book of raffle tickets for SEAS Summerfest ‘15. They are available this weekend only in Holy Family Hall! Please save us postage costs by taking yours today! If you are not a registered member, or you would like to sell more than one book of tickets, there are several envelopes marked “extra” for you to take!

WHY SHOULD YOU SELL SEAS RAFFLE TICKETS? 1. We need you! The raffle is the biggest “event” of the festival! The more people who buy

and sell tickets, the more profit to the Parish. The more profit — the less debt. 2. It’s the best deal around! At only $2 per ticket, our raffle is one of the best raffles of all

the churches in the area! 3. The total payout is $10,000! We give away the greatest prizes with multiple opportunities

to win! See your tickets for details. 4. You get a thank-you gift with each book you sell! There are 22 tickets in each book, if

you sell 20, the last two are yours! You only need to turn in $40.00 with each book of tickets. More details can be found in your ticket envelope.

So sell tickets to your friends, neighbors, relatives, and co-workers! Give tickets as a little

bonus in graduation cards, birthday cards, or as an extra tip to your favorite waiter! The winner does not have to be present! Join the fun! Buy some for yourself!

FROM THE PASTOR

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM From the feast of the martyrs Saint-Bishop John Fisher and St. Thomas More, June 22, through Independence Day, July 4, we have been observing an annual Fortnight for Freedom. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops highlights the urgency of religious liberty—most spectacularly in the dramatic, deadly persecution of Christians currently underway in the Middle East. Two months ago, I wrote in this bulletin how you might respond to the crisis—fasting & praying, solidarity, attention, politics, and direct assistance. In a subtler but still important manner, religious liberty is also under attack in these United States. Whenever you hear of crime ascribed to “religious extremism,” you hear the bigotry: The crimes are not the work of a crazed individual, nor even of a doubtful religious doctrine. The real problem, we are told, is too much religion—as if Amish Christians, for example, being “religious extremists,” are as dangerous as the Jihadists beheading Christians in Syria or Libya. Much anti-religious sentiment in the United States stems from a prejudicial perception that Christians “hate” sexual liberty. Indeed, American Christians have often been hypocritical—in the 1970s, for example, excessively indulging “no-fault divorce” and unregulated remarriage, while intolerantly scorning persons afflicted with same-sex inclinations. Above our failings, however, abides the faith of the Catholic Church: All persons must be treated with respect, compassion, and dignity; and at the same time, our maturation as persons and as a community requires cooperation with our sexual nature. Thus Pope Francis’s recent encyclical, Laudato si’, identifies human ecology as the central feature of any Christian ecology:

155. Human ecology also implies another profound reality: the relationship between human life and the moral law, which is inscribed in our nature and is necessary for the creation of a more dignified environment. Pope Benedict XVI spoke of an “ecology of man,” based on the fact that “man too has a nature that he must respect and that he cannot manipulate at will”. It is enough to recognize that our body itself establishes us in a direct relationship with the environment and with other living beings. The acceptance of our bodies as God’s gift is vital for welcoming and accepting the entire world as a gift from the Father and our common home, whereas thinking that we enjoy absolute power over our own bodies turns, often subtly, into thinking that we enjoy absolute power over creation. Learning to accept our body, to care for it and to respect its fullest meaning, is an essential element of any genuine human ecology. Also, valuing one’s own body in its femininity or masculinity is necessary if I am going to be able to recognize myself in an encounter with someone who is different. In this way we can joyfully accept the specific gifts of another man or woman, the work of God the Creator, and find mutual enrichment. It is not a healthy attitude which would seek “to cancel out sexual difference because it no longer knows how to confront it.”

—Fr. Dave

H E A R T S S P E A K T O H E A R T S SEAS EVANGELIZES

As mentioned in the Pastor’s Page, we are right in the middle of the 2015 Fortnight for Freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is a campaign initiated by the Roman Catholic bishops of the United States (USCCB), a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21-July 4 each year. The theme of this year’s Fortnight observance, “Freedom to Bear Witness,” emphasizes the link between

religious freedom and bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel, keeping in mind the sacrifice of so many martyrs to the faith, both past and present… “It is often in defending our freedoms that we are evangelizing, for the very struggle to defend and preserve religious freedom offers many opportunities for the proclamation of the Gospel such as the Fortnight for Freedom. In alerting fellow citizens to what is in danger of being lost, we have the opportunity of helping them to find what they have been looking for, their hunger and thirst for that unconditional love which only God offers us.” ~ William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore Pray for religious freedom in our country, and throughout the world. Look for the official “Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty”, available elsewhere in this bulletin, and in Holy Family Hall.

PRAYER FOR THE PROTECTION OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;

give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
