Through the six centuries Eton has been educating boys much has

changed, but the essence of school life has remained as described in the mid-nineteenth century by William Cory,

an Eton Master. Our primary aim is to encourage each

Etonian to be a self-confident, inquiring, tolerant, positive young

man, a well-rounded character with an independent mind, an individual who

respects the differences of others.   By the time he leaves the school, we

want each boy to have that true sense of self-worth which will enable him to stand up for himself and for a purpose greater than himself, and, in doing so,

to be of value to society.

Eton College is a British independent school for boys aged 13 to 18.

It was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI as

"The King's College of Our Lady of Eton besides Windsor".

It is located in Eton, near Windsor in England, north of Windsor Castle,

and is one of the original nine English public schools as defined

by the Public Schools Act 1868.Eton has a long list of distinguished

former pupils. David Cameron is the nineteenth

British Prime Minister to have attended Eton.

Eton has traditionally been referred to as "the chief nurse of England's

statesmen", and has been described as the most famous public school

in the world.

Eton's AimsEton is a full boarding school committed to:•promoting the best habits of independent

thought and learning in the pursuit of excellence;

•providing a broadly-based education designed to enable all boys to discover their

strengths, and to make the most •of their talents within Eton and beyond;

•engendering respect for individuality, difference, the importance of teamwork and the contribution that each boy makes to the

life of the school •and the community;

•supporting pastoral care that nurtures physical health, emotional maturity

•and spiritual richness; •fostering self-confidence, enthusiasm, perseverance, tolerance and integrity.

There are about 155 full-time masters plus numerous part-time teachers, temporary

members of staff, sports coaches and visiting music-teachers.

The academic staff are supported by a very large number of others

who prepare laboratories, look after libraries, print and

distribute documents, build sets in and maintain theatres, look after gardens and grounds,

maintain and repair ancient and modern buildings,

ensure a safe and secure environment, clean rooms, cook meals,

launder uniforms.Altogether there are about 800 staff variously employed in the extremely

complex and inter-dependent life of this very large boarding-school.

When boys arrive at Eton they usuallyfind themselves in classes of 20 to 24.

As their academic study progresses andthey make their own choices

about what to learn, the class sizes tend to reduce,

the size depending on the subjectand its popularity in a given year.

A typical GCSE class would contain about 15 boys

learning a second modern language,for example, and 20 in mathematics.Once AS-level and A-level choices

are made, class sizes reduce again,to about 12 in subjectssuch as mathematics,

or to smaller classes in subjects chosen by fewer boys.

Eton makes every effort to accommodatea boy’s choices in their entirety.

In-service training enables masters to become confident

in the use of technology to deliver their subjects in varied

and interesting ways, and to share with colleagues

their experiences of different approaches to teaching particular parts of a syllabus.

There is an active development group that provides training and resources

in computer-based teaching methods, and the school’s internet provides a rich

supply of material as well as links to the world-wide web.

But for all the power and sophistication of modern technology, that in some cases nothing suits the delivery of a topic better than a master standing in front of a class

and encouraging boys to discuss something with him.

Page 9: Eton College

Every master is provided with a laptop computer and most have

a data-projector for use in the schoolroom.

Increasing amounts of resource material are stored electronically on central servers which can be

accessed during lessons as required. The school requires all boys to have

their own computers or laptops or desktops,

and all boys are already able to access the internal web from the rooms in

their boarding houses. Departments will increasingly

make use of web-based resources in the way they set homework,

and encourage boys to use the internet for their projects, coursework and

private research.

When a boy comes to Eton he will join a house of just over 50 boys aged

between 13 and 18. His house will be the hub of his life

at Eton for the next five years. Each house is under the care of

a house master who will look after him, support him and, if necessary, make sure he behaves himself.

The house master is the main point of contact with the school

for a boy's parents. The house master is supported by

a dame’s assistant and a full domestic staff.

The dame looks after a boy's health, and she also runs

the domestic side of the house. Each house has a deputy house master and two assistants attached to it and

they will also help to ensure that every boy gets the best out of his time at Eton.

Page 11: Eton College

Eton College

There are a number of important senior boys with responsibilities

in the house, the first of whom is the house captain.

He will do his best to make sure a boy enjoys his time in the house and

participates fully in the various activities on offer in the wider school.

Another important senior boy is the captain of games.

He will encourage everyone to play a range of games, and will expect

every boy to participate in house teams regularly.

The senior boys will have the answers to lots of day-to-day questions

about Eton life. Every boy will also be encouraged

to take part in plenty of other house activities:

concerts, plays, musical and debating competitions, and so on.

Page 12: Eton College

Every boy at Eton has his own study-bedroom.

This is his own private space, which he can decorate as he pleases and

where he can entertain his friends, or exclude them if he wants

a bit of peace and quiet. About half of the houses eat breakfast,

lunch, and supper in Bekynton, a large central dining complex;

the others have their own chefs and their own house dining-rooms.

Every house provides a mid-morning Chambers snack and also

a mid-afternoon boys’ tea,a relatively informal affair

where boys make themselves toast and

are allowed to cook themselves something a bit more ambitious.

This is called 'messing'.

Page 13: Eton College

All boys are allowed home for Long Leave every half

and for Short Leave twice in the Michaelmas

and once in the Lent and Summer halves.

Boys can also go home after formal commitments

have finished on a Saturday  for one other weekend each half (when

Chapel is on Sunday evening). Boys can also go home

or go out with their parents, with their house master’s permission, whenever they are free from school

or house commitments.

ArtThe Drawing Schools have facilities for

painting, drawing, printmaking, computer graphics and digital photography.

There are also two purpose-built 3D studios that have facilities for ceramics

and sculpture in wood, metal and plaster.

There are opportunities for art within the timetable;

boys are also encouraged to use the studios in their free time

And the Drawing Schools are open at weekends.

The department is very well equipped and the departmental staff are there

to facilitate projects that are ambitious, individualistic and technically exciting.

The Drawing Schools stage regular exhibitions and there is a library that also serves as a lecture room.

Drama More than 20 theatrical productions are staged at Eton in a typical year, including School and House Plays.

Productions regularly go to the Edinburgh Fringe.

The whole repertoire is covered from classics and musicals

to the latest contemporary plays. Every third year

there is a School Play Festival for the performance of new plays

written by boys and Masters.

Games

Games are central to the Eton curriculum not just because boys

enjoy them, but because they embody many qualities

in which the school believes. Learning to win and lose,

to lead and be led, to push oneself to and perhaps beyond one's limits,

to think as part of a team, to know when to strive for more

and when to acknowledge defeat; these are all part of learning

to be human. Eton aims give every boy the chance

to benefit from learning through sport by playing and being taught the sport of

his choice at the level appropriate to his abilities and interest.

Page 18: Eton College

Games

There is a vast range of sports available, from the familiar like soccer, rugby,

hockey, cricket, rowing, athletics, squash, to the less familiar like rackets and fives.

There are some games which can only be played at Eton, namely the Wall and Field Games.

In all there are nearly 30 different games on offer, all coached by Eton masters

and professional coaches. There is a school team for just about

every boy who wants to play – this amounts to more than 40 teams

on some match days – and each of the 25 houses fields

a number of teams at senior and junior levels in the majority of sports.

Spiritual ValuesWhen Henry VI founded Eton in 1440

he envisaged a religious institution based on Christian principles as they

were understood in the fifteenth century.

Over the intervening centuries a great deal has changed

in the religious and spiritual landscape. Eton's Christian traditions

have always therefore existed alongside religious change.

But the values Henry's spirituality enshrined are not lost because

his school now welcomes members of all faiths and of none.

The spiritual challenge, conceived as that process through which each

human being finds himself and realizes himself, in relation to a god or no god,

for others, remains.
