III Sunday of Lent March 24, 2019

Holy Orders – Part I The author of the letter to the Hebrews writes:

Every … priest is taken from among [people] and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

There may have been a day when being ordained a priest placed a person on a pedestal. This placement may have been accomplished by a society and culture that placed a high value on religion. By extension, the value placed on religion was translated into an esteem for those who emerged as leaders in the religious communities. This was awarded to priests. The kind of reverential treatment of priests given by society is not much of a reality anymore; as the image of priesthood, strong men with a manly spirituality, inspiring confidence and fidelity to the Gospel, has been enormously tarnished by the crushing weight of scandal and disgrace. Understanding priesthood in any other way than accepting the responsibility of being a servant leader within the Church does damage to the very community the priest was ordained to serve. Like so many aspects of discipleship, priesthood is a lived reality and a continual journey to respond to the grace available so as to collaborate with God in order to fashion oneself to be more like Christ.

Sometimes a priest will forget or slide into a sort of spiritual stupor that is marked more by torpid witness which lacks the necessary authenticity of a commitment to serve others. Or the priest himself may have climbed on the pedestal thinking that because of his ordination and all that he perceives he has given up, he simply deserved it. This is among the most dangerous of delusions. Accepting the honorific of “Father” (a powerful source of reflection and humility) gradual-ly yields to the expectation of being addressed with the proper ecclesiastical title. I know some of my clerical colleagues take great offense when the title accompanying red buttons is substituted with the profoundly meaningful address of “Father.”

The preparation for ordination is lengthy. While it is still not uncommon for candidates to enter a formation pro-gram right out of high school, the delayed vocation has become commonplace. Some candidates resist the vocation; from the Latin vocare – meaning to call. Some enter a program of priestly formation after having worked in a profession or served in the military. The formation program can last anywhere from five to nine years for a diocesan priest; some-times longer for a religious.

Pope St. John Paul, in his Apostolic Exhortation Pastores Dabo Vobis (I will give you shepherds) articulated the four dimensions of priestly formation: Human, Spiritual, Intellectual, and Pastoral. The order is important. JPII recog-nized the significance of the absolute need for the humanity of the priest to take the lead in formation and in ministry. In part he wrote:

In order that his ministry may be humanly as credible and acceptable as possible, it is im-portant that the priest should mold his human personality in such a way that it becomes a bridge and not an obstacle for others in their meeting with Jesus Christ the Redeemer of humanity. It is necessary that, following the example of Jesus who "knew what was in humanity" (Jn. 2:25; cf. 8:3-11), the priest should be able to know the depths of the human heart, to perceive difficulties and problems, to make meeting and dialogue easy, to create trust and cooperation, to express serene and objective judgments. (PDV § 43) The second strut upon which priestly formation stands is spiritual formation. All disciples of Christ are called to

holiness and the priest is not exempted from the call to and practice of holiness. This does not necessarily mean locking oneself away in a chapel or church deeply fixed in prayer. In formation for the Society of Jesus, among the first efforts at formation is a disposition articulated as contemplavi et actione – contemplation and action. Notice the both-and nature of the statement; it is not an either-or sentence. This call to contemplation and action can be a challenge for any of us, but St. Ignatius was onto something with that insight. Going about the ordinary, everyday tasks which make up our life can still be the locus of an extraordinary experience of the presence of God. Faithfully,

Msgr. Diamond

Page Three Third Sunday of Lent Dear Parishioner of St. Cornelius,

The sacred season of Lent is unique in the opportunity for a renewed conversion to the Lord. As the priest says on Ash Wednesday: “Turn away from your sins and be faithful to the Gospel.” The culmination of this time of Grace and conversion is the celebration of Holy Week and Easter. The victory that Jesus has achieved is offered to us again as the Church celebrates the holiest events of the story of salvation.

Below is our schedule for Lenten observances. I encourage you to participate in these Lenten services and opportunities to more deeply enter into our Lenten journey. Use this time as a sort of daily retreat; take time to be with the Lord.

You have my deepest thanks for your kindness, generosity and participation in the events of the season of Lent. Sincerely, Msgr. Diamond

THAT MAN IS YOU!

That Man is You! honestly addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The program harmonizes current social and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision of man fully alive!

(TMIY https://paradisusdei.org/that-man-is-you) We have begun a new semester of That Man Is You! Each Wednesday morning has been a “mini retreat” for some. The content for our next 13 weeks will be “Becoming a Man After God’s Own Heart” All men of the parish are welcome to join us each Wednes-day morning at 6:00am (donuts have been known to appear). Each session and semester is independent of one another, so don’t feel you are too late to join us, just drop in and enjoy the fellowship of fellow parish-ioners. We look forward to seeing you.

FUNERAL MINISTRY Funeral Ministry is a parish organization that provides volun-teers to assist with the celebration of the funeral liturgy. Have you ever wanted to be an altar server? This could be your opportunity. Funerals are generally celebrated at 10 am; so if you have the occasional morning available, we could use your help. Training will be provided! Please call the Parish Life Center at 610-459-2502 to volunteer.

3rd Sunday Parish Rosary All parishioners are invited to participate in the 3rd Sunday parish rosary, recited after the 11:00 am Mass on every 3rd Sunday in the year. Our next recitation of the rosary will be May 19th, due to Easter falling on the third Sunday of April.

Eucharistic Adoration March 19 is the Feast of St. Joseph, Patron Saint of the Universal Church. He is also the Patron Saint of the Dying, the Poor Souls, of carpenters, and of the family. St. Joseph is honored for his unwavering obedience to God. God the Father turned to St. Joseph for help; Mary, the Mother of God, turned to St. Joseph for help; he was chosen by God to be the spouse of Mary and foster father of Jesus. We should pray to him to help us grow in holiness. He dis-appoints no one. Can you spend an hour with Jesus in the Adoration Chapel, Mondays or Fridays this Lent? Contact Sue Miller at 484-480-5882 or Toni Moyer at 484-840-0552 to schedule a time.

Family Promise Helps Homeless Families in Our Broader Community

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace”

(Peter 4: 10) St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families in southern Chester County. Our volunteers spend time with the most vul-nerable in our neighboring community and testify to growing in Christ-like compassion through this out-reach ministry. Our next week to serve is April 14-21st. We warmly welcome new volunteers and would appreciate dona-tions to support the food purchases for the meals we prepare when we have our turn to volunteer. Minister of the Word Minister at the Altar Minister of Charity While all the baptized are called to share in the mission of Jesus Christ according to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, those who are ordained also offer service in a way proper to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. A deacon’s ministry entails proclaiming, preaching and teaching God’s Word, assisting the bishop and priest at the Liturgy, assisting at funerals, ministering to the sick and dying, leading the community in prayer and in sacramental liturgies, baptizing, witnessing marriages, and exercising administrative leadership in the Church. A permanent deacon, who may be married, is a member of the clergy and shares in the hierarchy of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the deacon is configured to Christ the Servant. It is Christ the Servant who acts through the ministry of the deacon. Want to Learn More… We invite Catholic men (and their wives if married) with a deep spiritual life who are between the ages of 29 and 55, and would like to discern a call to serve Jesus Christ and His Church within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia as permanent deacons to take the next step and contact us for more information and to register for the upcoming Permanent Diaconate Information Night.
