STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.” (LUKE 9:17)

The story of the Loaves and Fishes shows us that when we share what we have, even if it doesn’t seem like that much, miracles can happen! Do not think that your gift is too small or insignificant! God blesses all the gifts we offer and makes them won-drous.

Please pray for all the faithful departed

CIVIC DUTY

I will be away this week. Vacation? Wouldst I were, but no. Another RENEW MY CHURCH Intensive? No, praise the Lord, although last Saturday I and our GFDT spent the day at St. Domitilla for an RMC Retreat. I will be in Lake County on jury duty, because my permanent address is in Lake County. For a whole week? Yes, that's how they do it up north. I'll explain in a moment. Back in the days of antiquity when I was ordained a priest, it was against the law for priests to serve on juries. Priests, police officers, and several other professions were legally excluded from that dimension of public service. Don’t know why, but I'm sure the government had its reasons. Several years ago the exclusion was lifted. Now, it's against the law for priests NOT to serve on juries if summoned to do so. A judge determined that the state's reasons for exclusion were not good enough. About 25 years ago I received a summons to jury duty in Lake County. I reported as ordered to the courthouse in Waukegan, and was interviewed for a case. (As I recall, the case involved a woman accused of murdering her husband.) Yes, I wore my clerical uniform; they needed to know I was a priest. After being asked several questions, it was determined that my services would not be required on that case. No surprise there. Nobody wants priests to be on juries. The prosecution feels we might be too merciful, while the defense is afraid we might be too moral, abuse scandal not withstanding. Was I done? Could I go back to the parish? No, because I needed to be available to the court for a whole week, Monday through Friday. I did not need to report to the courthouse every day, but I did need to call in to find out if I was needed. I called in at 3:00 PM to find out if they wanted me for the next morning, then at 11:00 AM to see if I had to go in that afternoon. This was the routine for the rest of that week. Not sure about compensation for my time; I don't recall receiving any, but it was a long time ago, and my memory isn't all that sharp, as you well know. For 25 years, perhaps more, I was not summoned to jury service. I concluded after a few years that my name had been taken off the potential jury list, and that was that. WRONG! A few weeks ago the summons came in the mail. In Lake County, once a person turns 70, he/she no longer is required to serve. I guess they took another look at their list and discovered that I was 69, only one year of eligibility left. And so… This afternoon I will make my way to my residence to await further instruction. How will this week unfold? Will I be interviewed for a jury? Will I be chosen to serve on a jury? Probably not, but if I'm not back next week, guess what. The biggest challenge in all of this is finding a priest or priests to cover for me while I am away. This is prime vacation time, and many of my brother priests are away, and others are covering for them. For two weeks Kathy has been reaching out to those on my substitute list, but with only limited success. Fa-ther Ron is handling Mass Monday. Deacon John will do Communion Services on Tuesday and Friday, there are no Mass intentions for those days. Father Mike Trail will handle Wednesday, but Thursday remains unfilled. If no one can be found, then a Communion Service will be done on that day as well. The intentions requested for Thursday will need to be rescheduled. I apologize for any inconvenience. Serving on a jury is one of the responsibilities we bear for being citizens of this great land, and I willingly embrace it. I trust when it's your turn, you will do likewise. Father Dan

Renew My Church: The Holy Spirit Prompts Our Response

The impulse to renew is not our own. As we hear in the Gospel, “But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” (Jn 16:13) What we are undertaking is a response of the Holy Spirit within us to the very words of Je-sus Christ who calls us to new life and speaks, “Renew My Church.”

This is an invitation that Jesus has shared with men and women throughout the cen-turies. Our Church is always the same, yet every changing.

There is one instance in particular that provides inspiration for us and is the reason the image of the San Damiano cross adorns many of our Renew My Church materi-als, and it is chronicled in the life of St. Francis of Assisi:

“… he [Francis] was walking one day by the church of San Damiano, which was abandoned by everyone and almost in ruins. Led by the Spirit he went in to pray and knelt down devoutly before the crucifix. He was shaken by unusual experiences and discovered that he was different from when he had entered. As soon as he had this feeling, there occurred something unheard of in previous ages: with the lips of the painting, the image of Christ crucified spoke to him. ‘Francis,’ it said, calling him by name, ‘go rebuild My house; as you see, it is all being destroyed.’(Thomas of Celano)

This is a central moment not only in the life of St. Francis but also in the life of the Church and the whole world. Begin-ning with his own heart and allowing the Lord to draw close, St. Francis was able to renew the Church of his day. And now it is our turn.

What we are experiencing today, is not the first time that the Church has needed renewal, nor will it be the last. The Church, as the Body of Christ, is alive and growing. At times, like the earthly body of Christ, it has parts that are cov-ered in dirt, are bruised, and weighed down, but remains always the very source of life. This continual need for re-newal gives us hope and it gives us energy because we know that it is Jesus Christ who is victorious. He works through men and women up and down the ages precisely to renew His Church, and we will see it and bear witness to it today with those around us.

This continual return to renewal, like the changing from winter to spring, from Lent to Easter, reminds us that we are experiencing a natural rhythm to the life of the Church. And with that, a moment of grace to join in the work of our Savior.

Go 100 Percent

'The single most important thing to look for is a sticker or tag indicating that they block 100 percent, or very close to that, of UV rays,' Dr. Tan say.

According to the American Cancer Society, labels that say 'UV absorption up to 400 nm' or 'Meets ANSI UV Requirements' mean the glasses block at least 99 percent of UV rays. Dr. Tan says you shouldn't assume the sun-glasses provide any UV protection if they have no label.

You don't have to break the bank

'Sunglasses don't have to cost a lot of money to protect you,' Dr. Tan says. 'Less expensive pairs can be just as effective as pricier options, as long as they meet the ANSI requirements or the 400 nm absorption threshold.'

Darker doesn't mean better

'Darker glasses that don't block all, or nearly all, UV light actually allow more of these higher-energy waves into the eye,' Dr. Tan says. 'These non-protective dark glasses cre-ate an artificial low-light environment that cause your pupils to open up more, allowing more UV radiation in, and potentially leading to greater danger and damage.'

Color is not a factor

'You can't judge a pair of sunglasses by its color for eye protection purposes,' says Dr. Tan. 'Shades and tints of sunglass lenses don't reflect UV blocking ability, so re-member to check the label for the most important infor-mation.'

According to Dr. Tan, lens tints filter light in different ways, and some tints do a better job at blocking light than others. Some tints actually enhance colors, while others distort them.

Don't be mesmerized by “polarized”

'Polarization' means a special chemical has been added to the lens that can reduce glare coming off reflective sur-faces like water or pavement, Dr. Tan says. But polariza-tion does not offer more protection from the sun. Dr. Tan recommends that if you aren't sure what kind of sunglasses to buy or think you may be at high risk for eye disease, you should check with an ophthalmologist.” Sister Ann Marie

FROM THE PARISH NURSE … Having been born, fair-haired and light skinned,” I have to take precautions before going out into the summer sun. So how do you protect your only pair from

the sun, which is the question that Nate Llewelly is going to answer for you.

“The spring and summer sun brings plenty of fun and out-door activities. But all that sunlight exposes your eyes to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which has been linked to a number of eye conditions, including cataracts and early onset age-related macular degeneration.

You probably don't want to avoid the sun completely, but it's easy to protect your eyes with the right sunglasses.

Dr. William Seng Tan, a family medicine physician on staff at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, Illinois, offers some basic tips to help you pick the right sunglasses to protect the only eyes you have.

The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for a loved one – living or de-ceased – is a beautiful part of our Catholic tradition.

We still have openings in our 2019 mass book so think about honoring a loved one today, by request-ing a mass intention. Please call (773-283-5222)or stop by the Rectory to arrange a mass.

RENEW MY CHURCH PRAYER

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time You call to us and say:

Renew my Church!

Pour out your gift of the Holy Spirit upon us, and enable us: to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to stay together in charity, to surrender our own plans readily, to embrace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example & presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever.

AMEN.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE PARISH PICNIC….

Hello! Our annual Parish Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, September 22, 2019, immediately following the 11:00 AM Mass. The picnic is a great opportunity for fellowship and fundraising, and it was a great success last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers.

I am once again asking for your help to make this year's picnic even better! On our parish website, you will find a link for an online volunteer signup form. In addition, we are looking for donations of gift cards and other items to use for basket raffle prizes and game prizes. Please con-sider making a donation.

We do have a donation letter available for those who would like to contact local businesses and ask if they are willing to make a donation to support our picnic. To obtain a copy of the letter, please contact me via E-mail or call the Rectory at 773-283-5222.

It is my pleasure to organize the picnic again this year along with Kathy Annunzio, and we appreciate any help you are willing to give! The picnic would not be possible without you! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Sincerely, Colleen Monforti
