PASTOR’S CORNER The images of salt and light from todays Gospel tell us some important things about the Chris an in the world. Firstly, the Church is seen as a minority. You cant have a whole meal of salt, rather a li le salt gives taste to the meal. Salt has to be mixed into the food while light has to be apart from what it illumines. So, the Chris an is mixed into the world but yet with another perspec ve, somewhat set apart in order to give light. Sadly, Chris ans are o en indis nguishable from the surrounding culture. Studies and polls o en show that there is li le significant dis nc on in Chris an prac ce from the general

popula on on issues such as abor on, death penalty, immigra on, euthanasia etc. The salt has lost its taste. This call and gi of faith is not given to us just for our individual enrichment but for the sake of the world. The first reading from Isaiah is clear that the source of the light we shine in the world is how we treat the neighbor in need “Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked and do not turn your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall be healed…” One wonderful way we get to do that in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in Together in Mission which keeps many of our Churches and schools open and func oning. I think it is one of the great unsung stories of solidarity and commitment I n the area. I feel passionately about it because for many years of my ministry I served in the inner city and saw firsthand the difference that these funds make and the effects of the ins tu ons they support in their neighborhoods. All other ins tu ons abandon the poorest areas, supermarkets, banks even other Churches but he Catholic Church and its schools remain to con nue to be light in the darkness. Our goal this year is $76,000 and I hope we can achieve it because it is a lifeline to many of our brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. I always make Together in Mission a significant part of my own charitable giving each year. Archbishop Gomez invites us to make our annual commitment this Sunday to help those parishes and schools that need our help. If you have made a gi in the past, a le er should arrive in your home this week asking you to renew your support. You can return that pledge card via mail or make your pledge at ourmissionla.org/give. _______________________________________________________________________________

Today is also World marriage day. We will have a special blessing at all masses for married people . There is no be er way to be salt and light in the world than building Chris an families. Here is a prayer for married couples “Almighty and eternal God, you blessed the union of husband and wife so that we might reflect the union of Christ and His Church. Look with kindness on us. Renew our marriage covenant. Increase your love in us and strengthen our bond of peace so that (with our children) we may always rejoice in the gi of your blessing. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen”

God Bless Fr Jay
