Holy Orders – Part II The third and fourth dimensions of priestly formation are Intellectual and Pastoral Formation. Intellectually the preparation is grounded in the study of philosophy then theology. Knowing philosophy aides in the exploration of theol-ogy. The philosophical and theological traditions of our Church have a long and powerful history. The gospel is an ideal that combines ideas and yet it is so much more than a matter of ideas. But one must understand ideas in order to compe-tently preach the gospel. From Augustine to Anselm to Aquinas to Benedict. From Teresa of Avila to Edith Stein to Katherine Drexel to Elizabeth Johnson. These theologians, philosophers and religious have made significant contribu-tions to the idea and ideal of the gospel throughout our tradition.

One does not have to be a member of the Mensa Society in order to be priest. However, anti-intellectualism, and its polar opposite, a tendency to over spiritualize matters, does not offer a strong support for priestly ministry. I heard once that St. Teresa of Avila was asked in her selection of a spiritual director what does she seek. Her response was something like: If I had to choose between a holy priest and an intelligent one; I’d pick the smart one every time. Teresa was the real deal.

I knew a priest who once joked (at the time I thought he was joking): “After ordination there are only two books I need: my breviary and my check book.” Sadly, he went off the job within a few years after ordination. Evidently, he was only using one of those books. His house was built on sand.

Pastoral formation, while fourth on the list, is not without its importance. Afterall a priest is ordained to serve most commonly in a parish. All of us know that it is the life of a parish priest for which we were ordained. I had been in education for twenty-four years before being returned to pastoral work as a parish priest. When I became a pastor, I often called my former students and asked them questions about matters ranging from canonical procedures to sacramental preparations. Being back in a parish after having been in education for so long, I found the learning curve to be a wee bit steep for a while. Getting into parish work again wasn’t like riding a bike.

Pastoral ministry requires a sharpened sense of the importance of interaction on a human level. Pope Francis famously remarked in a Holy Thursday Homily that the priest should have the stench of the sheep on him.

Those who do not go out of themselves, instead of being mediators, gradually become intermediaries, managers. We know the difference: the intermediary, the manager, “has already received his reward”, and since he doesn’t put his own skin and his own heart on the line, he never hears a warm, heartfelt word of thanks. This is precisely the reason for the dissatisfaction of some, who end up sad – sad priests - in some sense becoming collectors of antiques or novelties, instead of being shepherds living with “the odor of the sheep”. This I ask you: be shepherds, with the “odor of the sheep”…

(Chrism Mass Homily, March 28, 2013) More than twenty-five years ago a Catholic American writer offered this, much of which is, I believe, prophetic.

There has been much talk, especially in the secular press, about the bare ruined choirs and the imminent disso-lution of the Church, an end that has been regularly predicted for 1900 years…. [We live in an age in which the values of society are] ever more consumer oriented, ever inclined to view a person as an immanent being in an environment; therefore, a view of humanity which is in subtle ways not so much hostile but rather indifferent to Christ’s radical in-junction to his first priests: To follow me, go your way carrying neither purse not scrip nor shoes. Hostility is no stranger to the Church, she often thrives under it…..

Those who aspire to priesthood want something more … they are less and less impressed by the easy pitch and more and more exhilarated by the singular challenge. ….

…I am speaking in particular of the vocation of the parish priest who is one of the heroes of this age. There is one positive good which may come to pass from the present crisis in the vocations and scarcity of priests, and it is this: the time may come when we may come to value the very person, we have taken for granted all these years. What we took for granted was the parish priest. The life of a parish priest, like all things, has changed. Heraclitus wrote that one can never step into the same river twice. Priests in ministry 50 years ago could never have imagined the state of things we contend with regularly to-day. However, the church will survive. Teresa of Avila wrote: Nada te turbe … Let nothing disturb you. All things change. God alone remains. Priesthood, the Church, our parish, it is all in God’s hands. I for one am grateful for that. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

Page Three Fourth Sunday of Lent Dear Parishioner of St. Cornelius,

The sacred season of Lent is unique in the opportunity for a renewed conversion to the Lord. As the priest says on Ash Wednesday: “Turn away from your sins and be faithful to the Gospel.” The culmination of this time of Grace and conversion is the celebration of Holy Week and Easter. The victory that Jesus has achieved is offered to us again as the Church celebrates the holiest events of the story of salvation.

Below is our schedule for Lenten observances. I encourage you to participate in these Lenten services and opportunities to more deeply enter into our Lenten journey. Use this time as a sort of daily retreat; take time to be with the Lord.

You have my deepest thanks for your kindness, generosity and participation in the events of the season of Lent. Sincerely, Msgr. Diamond

Daughter of Abhiman and Jecintha Let us pray for our newly baptized Christian.

THAT MAN IS YOU!

That Man is You! honestly addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The program harmonizes current social and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision of man fully alive!

(TMIY https://paradisusdei.org/that-man-is-you) We have begun a new semester of That Man Is You! Each Wednesday morning has been a “mini retreat” for some. The content for our next 13 weeks will be “Becoming a Man After God’s Own Heart” All men of the parish are welcome to join us each Wednes-day morning at 6:00am (donuts have been known to appear). Each session and semester is independent of one another, so don’t feel you are too late to join us, just drop in and enjoy the fellowship of fellow parish-ioners. We look forward to seeing you.

Coffee The St. Cornelius Council of the Knights of Columbus will be host-ing its monthly coffee reception after the 11:00 Mass on the first Sunday of each month. Our next coffee reception is the weekend of April 7. Nick Capelli of Pronto Ca-tering is again supplying us with the caffeine, cocoa and tea. We request your participation by bringing a dozen or so baked goods for all parishioners to share and enjoy. Also, please use disposable containers for easier clean up. See you there!

Chosen Fathers A ministry of Mutual Support for

Fathers of Children with Special Needs

Being a good dad day-in and day-out is not an easy task. Yet raising children with special needs can make father-hood even more challenging. At St. Elizabeth Parish, there is a new group for fathers of children of all ages with special needs in all their many shapes, forms and sizes. We invite fathers of children with physical, mental, senso-ry, or emotional challenges to the first meeting of this new group aimed at enabling dads to follow Christ’s example of love, patience, mercy and service in raising and sup-porting their children.

March 24, 2019 $15,802 Thank you for your generous support.

Eucharistic Adoration I recently read an article about expressing grati-tude and its impact on one’s mental and physical health. It went on to say, expressing gratitude is a self-perpetuating behavior that also positively changes the way one thinks about and acts to-ward others. An essential part of a person’s relationship with God consists in giving him thanks, and this act of thanksgiv-ing has a transformative effect on the one who undertakes it. Doing an hour of Adoration each week, is a perfect oppor-tunity to give God thanks and let him transform you, so that you can go out and share his love with others. Let us try this Lent to make a difference in this world one person at a time starting with ourselves. Can you spend one hour on a regular basis with Jesus in the Adoration Chapel, once a month, once a week or what works for you, call us to schedule a time. Please contact

Family Promise Helps Homeless Families in Our Broader Community

“It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching”

next week to serve is April 14-21st. We warmly welcome new volunteers and would appreciate donations to support the food purchases for the meals we prepare when we have our turn to volunteer. To volunteer or contribute contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214

Minister of the Word Minister at the Altar Minister of Charity While all the baptized are called to share in the mission of Jesus Christ according to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, those who are ordained also offer service in a way proper to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. A deacon’s ministry entails proclaiming, preaching and teaching God’s Word, assisting the bishop and priest at the Liturgy, assisting at funerals, ministering to the sick and dying, leading the community in prayer and in sacramental liturgies, baptizing, witnessing marriages, and exercising administrative leadership in the Church. A permanent deacon, who may be married, is a member of the clergy and shares in the hierarchy of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the deacon is configured to Christ the Servant. It is Christ the Servant who acts through the ministry of the deacon. Want to Learn More… We invite Catholic men (and their wives if married) with a deep spiritual life who are between the ages of 29 and 55, and would like to discern a call to serve Jesus Christ and His Church within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia as permanent deacons to take the next step and contact us for more information and to register for the upcoming Permanent Diaconate Information Night.
