PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1 PASTOR’S CORNER 1

THOROUGHLY DOMESTIC Forming faithful Chris ans at the family table

By: Melissa Musick Nussbaum In this season of surprises — a man rises from the grave; death is denied the final say — I have one more: a love le er for a bishop. Recently, I was privileged to be a speaker at the annual ministry confer-ence in the diocese of Lubbock. Re ring Bishop Plácido Rodríguez opened the mee ng and led us in prayer. I expected that he would per-form the honors and leave, but to my surprise, I saw him slip into the room for my workshop and take a seat in the last row. My first thought: “Is he here to make an announcement?” (Throughout my career, I have not been accustomed to seeing bishops a end workshops led by laywomen.) My second, anxious, thought: “Has he read something of mine he didn’t like? But Bishop Plácido sat for the full hour and slipped out as quietly as he had entered. I was surprised again to see him near the front of the auditorium as I was introduced and began to speak. What he and others witnessed is my full-throated advocacy for the role of men and women as the ordinary ministers of their households. Again and again, I call people to the Rite of Bap sm and what it says about the role of mothers and fathers in the lives of their children. You have asked to have your children bap zed. In doing so you are accep ng the response bility of training them in the prac ce of the faith. It will be your duty to bring them up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God

and neighbor. (Recep on of the child, Rite of Bap sm) The responsibility, I tell them, is ours, not the pastor’s or the bishop’s. Although the church’s ordained minis-ters are here to help us, I remind them that no bishop is present when you put a child to bed, no priest super-vising as you pray with your child. We — mothers, fathers, godparents — are entrusted with the light of faith and the work of guarding its flame. We — mothers and fathers — are, in the words of the rite, “the first teach-ers of their children in the ways of faith.” The prayer of the church is that we might be “the best of teach-ers, bearing witness to the faith in what (we) say and do” (Final blessing, Rite of Bap sm). It is a rare talk when I do not bring up the importance of shared meals in the household. In that common experience of gathering and ea ng what God has provided and we have prepared, we learn about and are formed in our faith. It’s a thoroughly domes c presenta on borne out of my thoroughly domes c life. So, once again I was surprised when Bishop Plácido approached me a er the talk and took my hands in his. He thanked me, supported me in my ministry and encouraged me to keep wri ng and speaking. He shared his personal story of table fellowship with his parents and thirteen siblings in Mexico. He called it the most important forma on of his life. His father, a carpenter, had built a table for the sixteen of them. Given the limited size of the doorways, he had to construct the table right there on the kitchen floor. The bishop recalls

ea ng every meal there, three mes a day. The children sat in order of age, from the oldest on their father’s le , on around to their mother, who sat to her husband’s right. A er they had eaten, he told me, the oldest would read aloud from a devo onal work, a er which they would all discuss. “This happened every day except on Sundays,” he said smiling. “We were mad for baseball, and we le the table as soon as we could and spent the whole a ernoon playing.” He spoke of his love for his diocese, of the wisdom of its people, and his sorrow at leaving them. I asked him if he planned to re re in Lubbock. He smiled again, “No, I’m going back to Chicago, to my order.” When I asked him what he would do there, I suspected it would be something along the lines of teaching or taking some public leadership role. Instead he said, “I’ll do whatever they need. Wherever they need a priest.” New life appears in the most unex-pected places. For me, it appeared on a bright fall day on the Great Plains of Texas where I met a shepherd who was grateful for the table fellowship that had shaped his faith and his ministry. I met a shepherd in love with Christ and in love with the people Christ had called him to lead wherever he would be called to serve. I met a shepherd, happy to listen, to bless, to serve.

Siempre Adelante, Fr. Mike

Fi h Sunday of Lent Greater Than You Expect Some mes a prophet says more than he intended. Ezekiel in the first reading is talking about restoring Israel a er the Babylonian exile. The Jews saw the Exile as punishment for their sins. God demonstrates forgiveness by bringing them back to Israel; God also shows them divine power and glory so that they return to the Lord for their protec on. Jesus came to show us God in a new way and to fulfill the prom-ises of all previous prophecies. No ce how the first reading repeats two phrases: "open your graves" and "know that I am the LORD." Jesus demonstrates that God's promise is much greater than anything Ezekiel expected. When Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus, he knew that he was going to raise Lazarus from death to help his disciples believe. So why was he "perturbed and deeply troubled"? It could be that he was disappointed that his friends did not seem to believe that he could do this. Like Ezekiel, the people of Jesus' me did not expect him literally to raise the dead. But God used the prophet's message to prepare for Jesus' message that not only would he rise from the dead, but we will also. And like the friends and rela ves of Lazarus, we too may ques on how it could be possible. Fortunately, Jesus helps with that, too. Look at the second reading to the Romans. Because we have God's Spirit living in us, we who are sinners can be raised to new life by that Spirit. When our sins are forgiven, we begin to live a new life by loving the people we hurt by our sins, forgiving people who have hurt us, being more concerned for the poor than for our own comfort. We are freed from worrying about the future, all because we have experienced the new life of God's Spirit and, as Ezekiel says, know that God is the LORD. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
