PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time FATHERHOOD

By: Fr. Mike Gleeson, Pastor

PASTOR’S CORNER 1

Today is Fathers Day in sixty countries includ-ing the United States and Canada. Fatherhood comes under many guises: Fathers, Grandfathers, Stepfathers, Mentors, Teachers, Coach-es, Uncles and significant friends. I often say that I am the son of a thousand mothers but I have many fathers who have guided and encouraged me over the years. I would like to thank all many fathers of our community who sacrifice themselves and are truly de-voted to their families. Being a father is the essential role in your life and will not only influence your kids, but the lives of generations to come. There is an old adage, ‘ The child is father of the man or mother of the woman.’ What we experience as a child has a signifi-cant effect on the kind of people we are regardless of education and life experience. If we are loved and cared for we grow up secure and have no problem re-lating to God. The following are examples of some of the ‘fathers’ who have affected my life: My father was not a saint. However, he was honest and a man of integrity. He was generous and would quietly, and without fanfare, give money to those in our town who truly needed the help. He worked hard despite the fact that he had bronchitis and emphysema for the last thirty-five years of his life. However, he never complained about his health. He supervised our homework every night and was often more demanding than many of our teachers. He never did our homework for us but sometimes would point us in the different directions to help us make what we were doing better. Sometimes we thought why doesn’t he go to the pub like many of the fathers of our town. When I was young. I tried to be different than him. Now, I realize I failed miserably. Not all bad. Grandparents: One of my grandfathers was a teacher / principal. The other was a farmer. Both of them was very supportive. I spent a lot of time with both of them. I have very positive memories of both of them. One of the great influence on me was Bro Maguire, an Irish Christian Brother. He taught me, my four brothers and eight first cousins. He was demand-ing but we loved him because he was fair and had no favorites. I remember when I decided to work for a newspaper, he pleaded with me saying: ‘ You can do better!’ We remained friends and there was no one happier when I was ordained.

Though Bro. Maguire was against it, the expe-rience of working for a newspaper was an enriching experience. The editor was Bill Myles. He was truly a father to me. He taught me how to be a boss, without being bossy and not to be afraid to use my creativity. How to treat people and not to be afraid of those who try to manipulate you. There were several priests who influenced my life. Fr. Bobby Bradshaw was the priest I talked to when I wanted to enter the seminary. He died working in Siberia. Fr. Jim Feehan who was a great preacher. Fr Jim Meehan who was a loveable rogue with a heart of gold. Fr. William Noonan who was a gentleman to his fingertips. Fr. Seamus Ryan in the seminary. He was the greatest influence on all of us. He had a zest for life and priesthood that was palpable. I consider the title father the most meaningful of what being a priest is all about. I don’t want Mon-signor (Mister), bishop (overseer) or cardinal (hinge). Being the father of thousands is much more meaningful. It is our privilege to share in people joys and sorrows and that is what priesthood is all about. One of the places we do our best work is in confes-sion. People are truly honest but leave with a peace that only God can give them. Last Sunday we had our 8th grade graduation. I was impressed. The goodness and dedication of the kids gives us great hope for what we are about as a parish. I was talking recently with a friend who recent-ly spent much time with his son who had been away from the family for a long time. He was totally happy and was delighted with the closeness and openness he had experienced with his son. This is an important lesson for all of us. Sometimes fathers and daughters and sons have a difficult time communicating. It takes courage to become a listener to your daughters and sons. At the same time it is important for daughters and sons to express their love and appreciation for their fathers. All of us were raised by imperfect parents. That is no reason to refrain from deepening our con-nection with them. HAPPY FATHERS DAY!

Siempre Adelante, Fr. Mike

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Educate children to iden fy risky behavior Recently, abuse against women has been thrust into the public spotlight, with the “Me Too” movement. It is important for parents/caregivers be aware of risks to girls and risks to boys. Boys and girls both need to be educated on what’s acceptable and what’s inappropriate, and how to react if someone does something that crosses the line. It is important for adults to reinforce the message that we must all look for, iden fy, and call a en on to the risky behavior exhibited by any adult toward any child.
