First Sunday of Lent Today’s Readings First Reading: The man and the woman ate the fruit of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2). Psalm: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51). Second Reading: Death reigned from Adam to Moses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5). Gospel: Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4). Readings for the Week Monday: Lv 19:1-2, 11-18; Ps 19:8-10, 15; Mt 25:31-46 Tuesday: Is 55:10-11; Ps 34:4-7, 16-19; Mt 6:7-15 Wednesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19; Lk 11:29-32 Thursday: Est C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Ps 138:1-3, 7c-8; Mt 7:7-12 Friday: Ez 18:21-28; Ps 130:1-8; Mt 5:20-26 Saturday: Dt 26:16-19; Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8; Mt 5:43-48 Sunday: Gn 12:1-4a; Ps 33:4-5, 18-20, 22; 2 Tm 1:8b-10; Mt 17:1-9 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: First Sunday of Lent Tuesday: St. Katharine Drexel Wednesday: St. Casimir Friday: World Day of Prayer; Abstinence; First Friday Saturday: Ss. Perpetua and Felicity; First Saturday Scripture Reflection The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Renowned speaker and author Jeff Cavins will speak on “The Way Love Feels: A Look at the Cross of Christ,” Monday, March 2, 7-8:30 pm, in the church. In this talk, Jeff explores the transforming power of Christ's love poured out for us upon the cross and explains how the cross is the full expression of love.

We often want to live in the ideal world of comfort and predictability, where our needs are met, but most of life is full of things that don't go our way and are painful. Jeff defines the difference between the ideal life and real life, showing that if we understand suffering, we can incorporate it into loving those around us and our life can take on new meaning. The trials of life should not be impediments to real living. Instead we should see them as ways of really living. Jeff will explain how to transform those things that we don't like into the holiness of God. By showing us how the cross is the perfect expression of love, Jeff will help us see that real life is the opportunity to love in the sacrificial manner in which Christ loved us. No Greater Love Studies: March 3 & 4 and April 2 Filmed on location in the Holy Land, No Greater Love is a five-session biblical pilgrimage that reveals Christ’s amazing love for us and has the potential to draw those who enter into it closer to Jesus than they ever have been. Participants will walk step by step with Jesus from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Mount of Calvary, gaining new insights and coming to a deeper understanding and appreciation of God’s immeasurable and unconditional love. Three No Greater Love study groups are planned at St. Catherine during Lent: Tuesday mornings—March 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31; 10 am-noon, in the Melancon Center; and Wednesday mornings—March 4, 11, 18, and 25, and April 1, also in the Melancon Center, 10 am-noon. Please contact Carol Rooney, [email protected] or 460-0318, to join the Tuesday or Wednesday morning study. There also will be a Thursday morning group that will meet on April 2, 16, 23, and 30, and May 6. Contact Denise Redman, [email protected], to join the Thursday morning group.

Grief Support Group to Begin Meeting: March 4 Are you struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one? To assist you in this difficult journey, St. Catherine is offering a Grief Support Group. SCS Parish Census: February 29-April 19 St. Catherine of Siena is conducting a parish census! At the weekend Masses from February 29-March 1 through April 18-19, we are counting those who are members of our parish family. We are doing this by asking parishioners to check the information that we DO have already, and making corrections or additions as needed. The information that needs to be checked is in binders located in the narthex of the church and will be available both before and after all weekend Masses. There will be volunteers at each table to help and answer questions. Please, be vigilant, especially with your contact information, as this will be our main source of communication with you. Thank you very much for your help and cooperation in this matter. We could not do this without you! Please contact parishioner Georgine Bienert, at [email protected] or 813-9679, with any questions or concerns.

Letter from the Archbishop March 1, 2020 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, As we enter into this Lenten Season, God calls us to an honest, grace-filled assessment of our weakness and sins. The Church's call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving brings us to a conversion of heart and unites us to the love of Christ. I sincerely pray that your Lenten journey will be one that leads you to newness of life and blessings for you and your family. With the technological advances in our culture and a growing awareness of the dangers that come with this, we as a Church are called to protect and promote unity and the need for strong relationships within the family. When a family is truly connected they are more aware of the ways in which their children and grandchildren are struggling, especially in regards to the effects of exposure to dangerous content online. This first Sunday of Lent, we in the Archdiocese of New Orleans invite all parents, parishes, schools, and all organizations to learn more about this common struggle and how we can protect and provide healing for our loved ones, especially our children. Your parish has new resources to help you understand and confidently address this issue and act with God's love and mercy toward those in your homes and organizations. May Lent be a blessing for you and your family and a renewed experience of God's mercy. Know that you will be remembered in my prayers, and please remember me in yours. Wishing you God's blessings, I am Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
