The cable shipbelonging to AlcatelSubmarine Network,

currently laying the fiberoptic cable between Guade-loupe and Puerto Rico, made a stop in Saint Barthlast weekend. Mission: tocreate a digital spurbetween Saint Martin andSaint Barth, where thecable will come onto theisland via a relay stationnear Shell Beach.

Offering a top capacity 1Tera Bits/second, this newhigh-speed telecommunica-tions network (GCN-1) willconnect the islands of theGuadeloupe archipelago tothe worldwide Internetbackbone via Puerto Rico, with the digital spur linkingto Saint Barth allowing theisland to connect directly tothe fiber-optic network forthe first time. The 890 kilo-meters of cable needed forthe job where wound ontoAlcatel’s cable ship inFrance. Before arriving inSaint-Barth, the ship set outfrom Baillif on the mainisland of Guadeloupe andheaded toward Saint Kitts, where a “branching unit,”has been placed, in keepingwith a regional agreementof cooperation. The shipcontinued on its itinerary

toward Saint Martin, anoth-er “node” for the network. With the boat anchoredseveral hundred metersfrom the shore, divers hadto pull the cable as far asShell Beach, close to theconnection box. The cableship who leavs Mondayafternoon continue towardSt Croix, the last “node”for the GCN-1 network, before arriving in PuertoRico, its final destination. Two weeks ago Alcatel

signed an agreement with

Middle Caribbean Network(MCN), another filial ofGroupe Loret, for theextension of the underwaterGlobal Caribbean Network(GCN-1) to link Guade-loupe with Martinique, with a connection toDominica. This digitaltelecommunications spur ofmore than 240 kilometerswill be installed by the endof 2006, after the cable ismanufactured in the com-pany’s factory in Calais,France.

Painter Jesse Chap-man is the first artistin residence at

Me·di·um, an integratedartist residency programand contemporary artgallery that opened thisyear in Gustavia. The resi-dency program entails amonth of living in VillaSomura, and as Chapmansays, “working in the littlestudio that they have in thegarage, then having a showat the end.” In his case, theshow, Paintings, opens onMarch 4 and runs throughApril 27, featuring six oilpaintings completed duringthe island residency. “I'm trained by US art

schools,” says Chapman, citing the Art Institute ofChicago and Yale in NewHaven, with teachers suchas Galen Gerber and MelBochner: “work that I haveaffection for, but isn't anobvious touch-point for thework that I make,” heexplains. “In art, I likethings that can be accessedthrough human forms, nar-ratives, and environments—basically genre scene typethings, and then after thataccess is established, lead toforms that are autonomousand detached,” notes Chap-man. “My favorite twoexamples are John Wesleyand Seurat.”

Chapman’s oil paintingsfeature modern subjectsposed in classical interac-tions, which have beendescribed as a means to“mediate the pantomimes ofmore contemporary rela-tionships.” From jeans andshaggy hair cuts, to a bluefingernail, or a charm-braceleted arm reaching outto enigmatically cinch awaist, the figures in thesepaintings can also be seenas “semi-abstract blocks ofcolor: the figures’ faces sug-gest a world of disconnectin which the only portals ofcontact between people areobjects.” Chapman, who was born inRichland, WA in 1974,graduated from Yale with anMFA in painting in 2003.His work has previouslybeen shown at the Suburbanand Shane Campell (OakPark), Acuna-Hansen (LosAngeles) and HudsonFranklin (New York). Heand lives and works inBrooklyn. The descriptions

of his work are cited from apress release issued bySouthfirst gallery in Brook-lyn, which is where Chap-man first met medium’sowners, Marc Jancou andFergus McCaffrey. For Chapman, the idea thatpeople attempting to relateto each other, as in his pain-ing, The Anthropologists, where one figure is holdingup an arrowhead, mightneed to do so by picking anobject, and then both focus-ing on it is extremely inter-esting for me, since I'm set-ting up the painting as suchan object “What this islandresidency holds as potentialfor me, is an opportunity tokind of meld that idea ofrelating through an object, with the idea of relatingthrough an environment,”he says. It will be interest-ing to see how he relates toSaint Barth.

Due to the time dif-ference, the finaltribute to Swede

Olle Nyman took place alittle later in Saint Barththan in Sweden. The tributewas held, Tuesday February21, at the Swedish cemeteryin Public. Approximately40 people attended the serv-ice led by Anglican Rev-erend Charles Vere Nicolland Father Numa, theisland’s Catholic priest. Those in attendance includ-ed mayor Bruno Magras, aswell as first deputy mayor,Yves Gréaux, and the boardmembers of ASBAS. After a wreath was laid atthe commemorative plaqueat the cemetery, DanielBlanchard, who was a greatfriend of Olle Nyman, recalled some of the high-lights of the life of this manwho was dedicated to pre-serving the Swedish her-itage of Saint Barth, andmaintaining the tiesbetween Saint Barth andSweden. His moving wordswere followed by a shortspeech in French by FatherNuma, then in English byReverend Vere Nicoll. LenaJonnson, a Swedish residentof Saint Barth, read a poemin Swedish by MarinaNyman, which was also

read at Olle’s funeral inSweden several hours earli-er. The ceremony conclud-ed with a benediction by thetwo priests. Olle Nyman passed awayon January 30 in Stockholmat the age of 84, following acerebral hemorrhage fivedays earlier. He was thechampion of the Swedishheritage in Saint Barthincluding the renovation ofSwedish cemetery, therestoration of the WallHouse as a museum, andthe Swedish street names inGustavia, as well as reportsand broadcasts about theisland on Swedish televi-sion. His first trip to SaintBarth was in the early 60s,When he arrived on a Sun-day morning, Gustavia wasempty, so he went to the oldSelect, the only place thatwas open. There he metMarius Stakelborough, theowner, and they immediate-ly became friends. He con-tinued to visit the islandonce every two years, andhis last trip was made in2003. Last June, he sawJosette Gréaux and TeresaBrin in Sweden and toldthem he still planned toreturn to Saint-Barth. Sadly, that was not to be.

They started to pro-mote Saint Barth inthe 1970s, long

before the island’s tourismboom, yet removed it fromtheir catalog in 1999. Butresponding to increased

demand to visit the island,Jambo Tours has put SaintBarth back on their list, asof October 2005. ThisSwedish tour operator nowoffers packages with airfareand hotel for their Scandi-navian clients. Until now,two hotels —Village SaintJean and The Saint BarthBeach Hotel— benefitedfrom these tours, by as ofnext October, two otherhotels will be added to thelist, including the Carl Gus-tav. That was the news lastFriday from Kent Wallstedt, managing director of JamboTours, during a press con-ference held aboard the StarClipper, and which includ-ed a group of nine Swedishjournalists on an inauguralcruise: “We wanted to cele-brate our return to theCaribbean,” says Wallstedt(note: Saint Martin is alsoon the tour operator’s pro-gram). “That is why weorganized this trip aboardthe Star Clipper, whichbelongs to a Swedish com-pany, and which will beused for cruises leavingfrom Saint Martin. We arecounting on a responsefrom 30 articles in the

press, as well as an increasein clients.” At first, JamboTours plans to bring 150clients to the island, towhich they will add the 60-80 passengers aboard theStar Clipper, which willstop in Saint Barth everyweek during the winter sea-son. Kent Wallstedt sees therenewed interest in theNorthern Islands as a resultof better airline connec-tions, in spite of highprices: “In this context, ifSaint Martin is a good bar-gain for the money, SaintBarth is perceived by ourbetter clients as a safe desti-nation and that means a lotto the Swedes!” After debarking and touringthe island, the group ofSwedish journalists hadlunch at Le Rivage, beforemeeting the man known asthe “ambassador of Swedenin Saint Barth,” MariusStakelborough. After a visitto the municipal museum, the group went to the CarlGustav for a farewell cock-tail party organized by thehotel before getting back onboard the Star Clipper andsetting sail for Saint Martin, the last stop on their cruise.

CANCER (June 22-July 22) : A fieldof corn, perhaps? Your adventuresthis week are adventures of the ima-gination, and this weekend youmight not feel like leaving the housemuch at all.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22) : Friday is fieryand passionate. Romance, adven-ture, stuff like that. Lucky you! Thisweekend, rather than hunting formore fun, figure out who needs yourhelp and offer it.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) : Towardthe end of the week, you snap out ofit and show up for a family obliga-tion. Good for you! You will berewarded (with affection and crea-tive inspiration) this weekend

LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) : Also,

you're lucky in love right now. Whenyou express your feelings, peoplerespond well. Nevertheless, it will bea weird weekend, and your head willbe in the past.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) : Thelarger issues of the day are on yourmind on Friday, and your thought-fulness leads you into philosophicalterrain. This weekend, a couple ofbusiness matters occupy your mindand your calendar.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) :A legal matter figures into your dayon Monday, and you undoubtedlyhave your adoring fans. But fans donot make a star happy, and in theensuing days, you're trying to figureout why your life is going in certaindirections.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) :The end of the week is also aboutdiscipline (even things that seemimpossible are possible, so long asyou stick to your guns). This week-end, plans and projects go in yourfavor. Impress the pants offsomeone.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) :Spend Friday around friends, andwelcome Saturday and Sunday athome, in a relaxed position, with amagazine in your hand.

PISCES (Feb. 20 - March 20) : Orat least, that they're getting more outof you than they deserve. Pay atten-tion, be aware and give others thebenefit of the doubt at the end of theweek -- but stick up for yourself.
