Sunday, February 6, from8am-2pm, the Saint BarthRotary Club is holding itsannual Culinary Fair andFlea Market on the maindock in Gustavia. Lastyear these two Rotaryevents were combined andthe outcome was a greatsuccess, allowing atten-dees to spend Sundaymorning filling their sacswith gently used clothing, jewelry, accessories,DVDs, CDs, electronicequipment, furniture, andmore.

L'Association RessourcesParentalité St-Barth will

sell children’s toys, cloth-ing, books, and babyequipment. Local storeswill offer overstock andlast season’s items. As

they say, “one man’s trashis another man’s treasure!”An array of culinary cul-tures will be featured, from Brazilian, Por-tuguese, Italian and Creoleto local kitchens. Rose-Marie will offer local spe-cialties and the ever sopopular St. Barth “gal-lette” will be available. The Rotary Club will sellwater, beer, and softdrinks, and tables will beavailable to enjoy lunchwith a view of the harbor.

Proceeds from this eventwill support local Rotaryactivities including contin-uous aid to Haiti earth-quake victims, hotel andrestaurant training foryoung Haitians in con-junction with the associa-tion “Gout et Saveur,”sponsorship of local youthprograms such as theorganic vegetable gardenat the public preschool ofGustavia, annual visitsand aid to the less fortu-nate during the holidays, study abroad sponsor-ships, the Rotary Interna-

tional Foundation, and thePolio Plus Foundation.

In 1985, Rotary launchedthe PolioPlus program toprotect children worldwidefrom the cruel and fatalconsequences of polio.Since 1988, Rotary Inter-national and its partners onthe Global Polio Eradica-tion Initiative (GPEI), theWorld Health Organiza-tion, UNICEF, and theU.S. Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, have worked to wipe poliofrom the face of the earth.Since 1995, the advocacyefforts of Rotary and itspartners have helped raisemore than $8 billion fromdonor governments. Thanks to Rotary and itspartners, the world hasseen polio cases plummetby more than 99 percent, preventing five millioninstances of child paralysisand 250,000 deaths. How-ever, as long as poliothreatens even one childanywhere in the world, allchildren, wherever theylive, remain at risk.

I watch as painter Alain LeChatelier unrolls a paint-ing over six feet wide:“This is the largest paint-ing I have done on canvas, other than a fresco,” hesays. Back in theCaribbean for his annualvisit and solo show at LesArtisans in Gustavia, LeChatelier explains that thislarge canvas is called“Caribbean Landscape,”which he painted in Paris, calling upon his memoriesof the island. Tucked inamongst lush tropical veg-etation one finds a tradi-tional little cottage, aniguana, birds, an airplane, and a sailboat. “It’s a mixof various locations on theisland, taking from memo-ry,” Le Chatelier admits, pointing out that the vege-tation is more “rain forest”variety than what onemight really find here, butthe overall feeling is defi-nitely Saint Barth. Alongthe same theme are small-er paintings of agave andcacti, in seductive shadesof green and blue.

“I just had an exhibit inSweden, where I sold 60

paintings,” Le Chateliernotes. “I was at a galleryin the small town of Ystadand have been invited todo a poster for a jazz festi-val there next year.” Healso has an exhibitioncoming up this summer inEast Dennis, MA, on CapeCod, hosted by jewelerRoss Coppelman, whoalso shows at Les Artisans.“I went there and it is anamazing place to show my

work,” Le Chatelier says.

The piece de resistance ofthis year’s show in SaintBarth is a painting of amermaid, albeit an eroticmermaid sitting on anunderwater throne withbooks by her side: clever-ly enough she’s been read-ing Jules Verne, and Hem-ingway’s “The Old ManAnd The Sea.” The purplearmchair actually residesin Le Chatelier’s livingroom: “It was my grandfa-ther’s chair,” he explains, noting that mermaids (inhis mind’s eye) are alwayserotic. This one has scalesthat begin on her upperthighs, with the rest of herbody exposed, whileadored with a pearl necklace.

The painting’s blue andpurple tones are veryvibrant, and looking close-ly one sees a little scubadiver trying to get a betterview of this underwaterprincess, as well as bright-ly colored fish swimmingout of her Medusa-likehair. “I did research withunderwater photos andimages of things I’ve seenhere,” says the artist, whorefers to both the mermaidand the Caribbean Land-scape as “dream paint-ings.” These are the kindof tableaux that he isknown for: slightly alteredreality with a touch of fun,and so much to look at,you never tire of looking!

French pianist DavidBismuth will perform forthe first time in SaintBarth on Saturday, Feb-ruary 11 at 8pm at theAnglican Church in Gus-tavia. The concert wasorganized personally byGaby Charneau of HotelVillage Saint Jean: “Iheard David play in Parisand thought he wasabsolutely wonderful, soI invited him to comeperform in Saint Barth,”she says.

Born in 1975, Bismuthbegan his musical stud-ies at the regional branchof the French NationalMusic Conservatory inNice, where he won thefirst prize for piano. He has played cham-ber music alongside Lau-rent Korcia, MarinaChiche, and the PsophosQuartet, as well as theCapitole Orchestra ofToulouse. In concert atthe Bouffes du NordTheater or the Châteletwith the NationalOrchestra of France, hehas shown a taste forintimate venues, where a

Quite a surprise for MaxPeter, captain of the StBarth rescue-at-sea station:on Thursday morning, Jan-uary 27, on the beach inPublic, this former fisher-man from Corossol sawsomething quite unexpect-ed. Two giant squid, referred to as "seiched'hivernage" in the Antilles, were found close to theshore. Peter did not hesitateto jump into the water tograb them, although he wasunsure how they mightreact. Over three-feet long, andeach weighing over 35pounds, the twocephalopods are not thesame the giant squid or“Architeuthidae mollusks”that live in extremely deep

waters (over 500 meters)and can reach lengths of upto 60 feet. This is not the first timethis kind of giant squid hasbeen found along the shoresof Saint Barth, but it anexceptional occurrence dueto the size of the mollusksand the fact that they werea couple.

Like the frigate birdkite surfers soar endlesslyacross Grand Cul-de-Sac

A length of grey ropehangs coiled beside its body

torn from coral sea

Washed up its last breathdissolved into the trade winds

as driftwood it battles

All life lingers thenmoves on like fish stuck

between sea and sand

Dreams inside a dream.Still the pelican soaringturns diving once more

Round Grand Cul-de-Sacthe tao moves easily on
