In Saint Barth, 3,019voters of the 4,701 regis-tered took part in the pri-mary on April 21, marking arecord high of 63.41%. The right-wing candidate,Nicolas Sarkozy, was theleader in Saint Barth wheremayor Bruno Magras, offi-cial representative of theUMP party on the island,

Aprofessional struc-ture grouping all theeconomic sectors on

the island: that is the basisfor a new organization thatwill represent the variousinterests of Saint Barth(businesses, industry, arti-sans, sales, independent

workers, etc…) when thenew Overseas Collectivity iscreated. This new structurewill replace the currentchamber of commerce andindustry in Guadeloupewhen it comes to defendingthe economic interests ofisland. The economic lead-

ers of the island came to thisdecision after a series ofmeetings last week. Thesemeetings helped define thisfuture inter-professionalchamber— its goals, itslegal status, its funding, andoperation. Island businessmen

expressed their desireto have representationspecific to Saint Barth, and separate from thatof Guadeloupe andSaint Martin. Duringthe time it will take toestablish this newstructure, they willmeet regularly to con-tinue building the proj-ect and start immedi-ately to establish fund-ing, and outline goals, which include variousbusiness rules andregulations.

SBArtists, a local non-profit organization,continues its explo-

ration of theatrical genres with thesixth edition of the annual SaintBarth Theatre Festival. The themethis year is the discovery of text-based contemporary theatre. Run-ning from Friday, May 4 throughSunday, May 13, this year’s festivalis the most modern to date, and alsothe largest with six productions onthe menu: three by the amateuractors of SB Artists, and three othersthat have recently been performed inFrance, and one of which, “L’envoldu Pingouin,” has been nominatedfor a Molière Award (the Frenchequivalent of the TonyAwards in the US) in thebest one-man show catego-ry. The schedule alsoincludes “Jerry Finnegan’sSister” (La sœur de JerryKing) by American play-wright Jack Neary, as wellas “Y’a des jours commeça,” a police comedy thatran for several months atThéâtre Le Mery, one ofthe most popular café-the-atres in Paris. These professional produc-tions augment those by SBArtists, our local amateurtroupe led by NadègeEmmanuelian, who alsoorganizes the festival. Thecompany has been hard atwork rehearsing for a fewmonths and Emmanueliansays the plays are in good

shape. She will perform “In Transit”(Les pas perdus), a play by DeniseBonal written in 2000. Seventeenactors appear on stage one after theother to sing, dance, tell stories, slam… any form is good to portraythe mass of humanity passing by in atrain station. After performing in“Inconnu à cette adresse,” during the2005 festival, Charlotte and Corinneare back in “Blanc,” a poignant textin which two sisters have a visionthat their mother is going to die. From life and death to humor in“Joyeuse Pagaille,” a pure Vaude-ville performed by six members ofSB Artists.

The 12th edition ofthe St. Barth FilmFestival/ Cinéma

Caraïbe closed last Tues-day night with an addition-al screening of the docu-mentary, Memories of OurPast (De mémoire d’an-ciens), which tells the storyof Saint Barth throughmemories of its oldernatives. For film producerJoshua Harrison, one of thefestival’s co-founders whoworks on programming thefilms each year, this wasone of the most intimistfestivals yet, with a selec-tion of films focusing onthe issues of daily life: “Inthe past 12 years we havesucceeded in taking a com-plete tour of Caribbean cin-ema, its various styles, itsparticularities, its importantmessages. This year’s festi-val looked more closely atthe daily life of people, asif examining their environ-ments through a micro-scope.” This 12th edition alsomarked a larger geographicarea, with three LatinAmerican films that falloutside of the strict con-fines of Caribbean Cinema:

Saudade do Futuro, Pan’sLabyrinth, and RollingFamily, the first Argen-tinean film shown at thefestival. This choice wasintentional notes Harrison,as a means to highlight thesimilarities that existbetween Caribbean cultureand that of certain LatinAmerican countries. Following this line of logic, some festival goers mayhave had difficulty explain-ing the presence of Pan’sLabyrinth, a magnificentfilm crowned by threeAcademy Awards (with sixnominations), and the first

fantasy/thriller film to beshown at the festival: “Thefilmmaker, Guillermo delToro, the producer, thecameraman, are all Mexi-can. Only the casting isinternational, yet at leasthalf of the actors are Mexi-can as well,” explains Har-rison, who also wanted toillustrate the increasingimportance of Mexicanfilmmakers in the interna-tional film industry. “Likemany other Caribbean film-makers, they often have toleave their native countryand work elsewhere inorder to get established.”

The Harder They Come, The BestOf Caribbean Cinema

The organizers of the St.Barth Film Festival have aspecial place in theirhearts for The HarderThey Come, which wasshown as part of the firstfestival in 1996, and againas part of this year’s pro-gram in tribute to its direc-tor, Perry Henzell, whopassed away in November2006. For Joshua Harrison, this 35 year-old landmarkJamaican film, whichpushed the Caribbean andreggae music onto theinternational scene, remains “the quintessentialCaribbean film. There hasnever been anything elsequite like it.” Unless the long-awaitedsequel, No Place LikeHome, completed not longbefore the director’s death, proves to be better. “Thisfilm will be released in theUnited States, and wehope there will be a ver-sion sub-titled in Frenchso that we can show ithere,” Harrison says.

Joshua Harrison, co-director of the St. Barth FilmFestival/Cinéma Caraïbe & Christopher Laird, director ofGayelle TV in Trinidad & Tobago.

The 12th edition of the St. Barth Film Festival was marked by a personal style of filmmaking, delving into the daily

lives of such characters as the title role of Adolfo,a frustrated taxi driver in Havana, Cuba.

In spite of one personwho was slightly

injured, the customers atthe Piment, a restaurant atVilla Créole, were verylucky last Sunday after-noon. It was a little after1pm when the enormous“quenetier” tree planted onthe other side of the roadsuddenly fell in proximityto their heads. A light gust

of wind toppled the tree, whose trunk turned out tobe completely rotten. Ittook almost two hours fora team of firemen and resi-dents to clear the debrisand open the road. Fortu-nately traffic was notbacked up thanks to adetour through a privateparking lot.

Anew rescueboat wasscheduled to

arrive this spring toreplace the ContreAmiral Noël currentlyin service in SaintBarth, but its arrivalhas been postponeduntil the beginning ofAugust. This delay isdue to technical prob-lems on another boatin the same shipyard, making it impossibleto meet the initial schedule. To date, the hull has beencompleted (as can be seen inthe photo), and the boat hasbeen moved to the technicalcenter for the SNSM(National Rescue At SeaSociety) in Saint Malo onthe coast of Brittany inFrance where the electronicsand motors will soon be

installed. With a length of 35’ and two330 hp engines this pro-peller-driven boat will beable to reach a cruisingspeed of 25 knots and is bet-ter adapted to tropical waterconditions than is the ContreAmiral Noël whose hydrojets cause problems on aregular basis.
