Looking quitefetching as NinaMinimaximova,

Victor Trevino sat onthe edge of the stage atAJOE, after the per-formance on Sundaynight, signing auto-graphs, with a big redlipstick kiss next to hisname. The founder ofLes Ballets Grandiva(who performed inSaint Barth on January 7 and 8 as the curtainraiser for the 22nd annual St. Barth MusicFestival), Trevino wore a classical red balletcostume and pink toe shoes for his perform-ance in his all-male comedy ballet company. He also choreographed most of the piecesthey performed, with the exception of “Go ForBarroco,” by Peter Anastos. Eight of the company’s 19 dancers came to StBarth, marking the 10 year-old troupe’s debuthere. On Saturday night, things seemed a bittentative and some of the audience membersdidn’t quite know what to make of men intutus and toe shoes, dancing with names suchas Pearl Lee Gates, Ginger Snapps, and SueNami. By Sunday night, the company lookedmore comfortable in their outdoor, low-techvenue, and although Trevino denies that theirgestures were more expansive, the performerswere greeted with appreciative laughter fromthe opening steps of “Pas de Quatre.” Theresponse was sustained through “Spartucus,”and “Go For Barroco,” with the audiencecheering at the end of the final piece. Les Ballets Grandiva are not just about come-dy: their parodies of classical ballet requiretechnical precision and aplomb. Some of thesedancers have great technique, and point roleshave been created for them in other balletcompanies. In fact, one gets so used to seeingthese men dancing as women that when oneappears as a man, such as the prince in Satur-day night’s excerpts from “Swan Lake,” forexample, it almost seems odd. And one couldoccasionally forget that the “ballerinas” onstage were actually men, although that is notTrevino’s intention. “Some of the dancers arebigger and obviously male,” he says. “Butsome of the others can bring you into a fanta-sy world, a world of magic, theatrical magic.” Trevino also noted that it is no different for aman to learn to dance on point than a woman:“just the structure of the legs and feet are dif-ferent,” he says. In terms of understanding the

ballets they parody, hesays: “The more youknow, the more youget. Yet we also reachanyone who hasn’tbeen to see balletbefore. One of ourgoals is to developnew audiences fordance, and not justcomedy dance.” The dancers stay withLes Ballets Grandiva

six to seven months a year as the companytours around the world. “On their off months, many of them dance with other companies, both modern and ballet, and some perform in“The Nutcracker” at Christmas time.” Trevinoalso has some more contemporary parodies inhis repertory, such as works by MauriceBejart, and he collaborated with Peter Anastosand Marcus Galante on “Semi-PreciousStones,” a parody of Balanchine’s classicalevening-length work, “Jewels,” with sectionscalled Zirconia, Garnet, and Peridot. “This is agreat piece for us, very camp and very glam-orous,” says Trevino, looking both camp andglamorous himself. Luckily the company’sballet master is Peter Boos, formerly of NewYork City Ballet, who can give the dancers’insight into Balanchine’s fancy footwork.Men in full drag, doing parodies of classicalballet? Well why not? In Shakespeare’s day allof the roles, both male and female, were per-formed by men. And if all the world’s a stage,it might as well be danced on by men who canmake us laugh along with them as they pokefun at classical ballet and themselves. Both programs opened with wonderful per-formances by the island’s dance students, withfour short numbers choreographed by Malloryfor the students of Forma Form on Saturday, one of which was set to music by The BlackEyed Peas. Sunday saw students fromr theAjoe School of Dance and from “Dance withKim.” The Ajoe students performed Rêved’Amour (Dream of Love), a 13-minute piecechoreographed by Nathalie Carrères, who alsoperformed with her students. Kim, whose realname is Sylvie Millerot, presented five shortpiece under the heading “a look at the past,”and performed in the final number set tomusic by Peter Cincotti. The level of all theyoung dancers seems to improve every year, and with almost 100 dancers on the two pro-grams, it is clear that dance is a popular activi-ty in Saint Barth.

Anyone who has attended aconcert at the St Barth MusicFestival can attest to the high

quality of the performances. Thismay seem somewhat surprising on asmall island where cultural activitiesand facilities are few andfar between. But whenone opens the pages ofthe festival program, andreads the bios of themusicians and conduc-tors, it is very clear thatthis festival, now in its22nd year, is a rarity onthe world music scene. An outstanding talentreturning for his fifth sea-son at the festival ismaestro Richard Buckley,a highly acclaimed Amer-ican conductor who hasled many of the world’stop orchestras, includingthe New York Philhar-monic, Los Angeles Phil-harmonic, PhiladelphiaOrchestra, MinnesotaOrchestra, the symphonyorchestras of Chicago, St.Louis, Houston, Toronto,Edmonton, Vancouver,Utah and Seattle, amongothers. In addition to hismany impressive conductingengagements around the world,Buckley has served as the principalguest conductor of the Seattle Sym-phony, and music director of theOakland Symphony. In addition to a busy conductingschedule, Buckley also enjoying histhird season as artistic director ofAustin Lyric Opera in Austin, Texas,a position that allows him enoughtime off to continue his freelanceconducting career, with engagementscoming up in Montreal, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. In Austin, he choosesthe operatic repertory, chooses thesingers, and helps with communitydevelopment and fund-raising to

support the company.Buckey met Frances DeBroff, founder and director of the St BarthMusic Festival, when he was a guestconductor for the Pittsburgh OperaOrchestra (where DeBroff plays vio-

lin). “Frances asked me to come, then invited me back,” recallsBuckley. When asked about the lev-el of the musicians at the festival,he replies: “Frances carefullyselects musicians of world class cal-iber. They are from the best orches-tras in the United States andEurope.” Many return year afteryear, and Buckley finds they “enjoymaking music together and do so ina very short amount of time.” Headmits that this could be difficultwithout a special rapport with theconductor. “I have enjoyed a gooddynamic with them,” he says. “Sofar, it’s a good fit.”Buckley has been working with

DeBroff to develop the operatic por-tion of the festival, and this year hewill conduct an evening of excerptsfrom “Carmen” and the third act of“Aida,” featuring singers JaneThorngren, Emily Golden, Tom Fox,

and Philip Webb.*“Sometimes I get a man-date from Frances, andother times its just“make a decision,Richard, I trust you,” henotes. He is extremelyproud of the gala operaconcert he conductedtwo years ago, as well aslast year’s challengingperformance of “Tosca.”One of the challengesBuckley faces here isthat “not all of the musi-cians play in operaorchestras,” he pointsout, noting, “That meansthey are not as familiarwith the music. But Itake no prisoners. I gowith my interpretationand they hang on for theride.” When it comes tothe opera evenings, heldin the Catholic Church

in Lorient, Buckley triesto “vary the experience,

and not stick with just one mode ofopera.” By carefully choosing therepertory he can limit the number ofsingers, while at the same time offer-ing them the chance to perform rolesthey might never do elsewhere.“Jane Thorngren will sing the thirdact of “Aida” here,” he explains.“That is a role she would never singin a large hall.” Buckley donates his services to theSt Barth Music Festival, and is hap-py to do so. “It’s a cool idea, and Ilove the island,” he says. “It’s alabor of love and I enjoy doing it.”

After the Rotary financed a firstunit a month ago, FEMUR(Funds for Emergency Medical

Equipment) presented the Saint Barthhospital with a Dynamap monitor. Val-ued at approximately 6500 euros, thisnew monitor, equipped with an alarm,is for checking blood pressure, taking the pulse, monitoringcardiac activity, and measuringthe level of oxygen in theblood. Thanks to the latest gen-eration technology, the meas-urements can be networkedwith other equipment, or sentdirectly to the central computervia telecommunication as soonas the hospital is equipped withWiFi (wireless Internet con-nection). This should be thecase when the extension to the

hospital is built (work should beginsometime in 2006). FEMUR alsoannounced its intention to participatein the financing of additional equip-ment for the new medical services thatwill be available once the hospital hasbeen enlarged.

A FAITHFUL SPONSOR

Peter Mund, a longtime Americanresident of the island, initiated thelaunch of the non-profit association,FEMUR (Funds for EmergencyMedical Equipment) in 1981.

Financed exclusively throughdonations, 80-90% of whichcome from American benefac-tors, the foundation has a sin-gle goal: improve the medicalequipment at the HospitalBruyn. The totality of thefunds collected is invested inmedical equipment for thehospital. A faithful sponsor,FEMUR has made six dona-tions of the equipment to thehospital, the Dynamap beingthe most recent.

Championed by MichelGeoffrin, the separationof trash has become apriority on the island:The goal is for everyhouse to have two trash-cans: one for recyclableobjects and the other forthings that go to theincinerator.

It is quite a challenge toprotect the environmentwhen one lives on anisland of just 8 squaremiles: every gesturecounts if the island is to besaved from wallowing intrash. That was one of thepriorities for Michel Geof-frin, the assistant mayorwho passed away in anaccident on December 27,2005. He was the “motor”behind the new incineratorproject: an incinerator thatis on the cutting edge oftechnology, using the ener-gy discharged by combus-

tion of trash to produce hotwater. He is no longer hereto support the philosophyof separating trash forrecycling: an idea heworked so hard to get theisland to embrace, as heknew how important itwas. It is extremely important,in fact, that every houise-hold separate its trash, using a clear plastic bagfor recyclable objects(glass and cans), and anopaque bag for the est(plastic, cardboard, china, and light bulbs.) A newflyer, distributed by thepost office, will be placedin every mailbox and postoffice box on the island, with a diagram explainingthe system. The days thattrash is collected along theroadsides is clearly indi-cated for each neighbor-hood: “individuals canalso come directly to the

trash collection center inPublic and drop off theirtrash bags,” explainsSophie Olivaud, assistantmunicipal technical servic-es director. The incineratorcannot burn everythingand separating things outafter incineration is justabout impossible: whichmeans that things thatshould not have beenburned have to be separat-ed and transported by boatto be eliminated off island,an operation that is veryexpensive for the munici-pality and a drain on thebudget. The annual “tax”for trash collection hasbeen raised from 80 eurosto 100 euros per householdthis year. Every one on theisland is concerned by thesuccess of the trash sepa-ration program in hopesthat these fees can bereduced in the future. It is important to note that

the machine that was usedto compact metal is stillout of service. Which is allthe more reason to sepa-rate cans, so that they arenot partially burned andtherefore not recyclable. Inshort, everyone should doall they can to help theisland run a successfulrecycling program.

RECYCLING IS A MUST

Please remember to separate your trash!

The schedule for the collection of recyclableobjects (glass bottles and jars, and metal cans) is as follow:- Tuesday: Gustavia,Lurin, Gouverneur,Public & Corossol ;- Wednesday: GrandFond, Toiny, Cul de Sac,Marigot, & Pointe Milou- Thursday: Colombier,Flamands, & Anse des Cayes ;- Friday: Vitet, Devé,Camaruche, Lorient,Saline, & St. Jean.

To fulfill their dreamsand desire for adven-ture, artists Stanilas

Defize and Marc de Rosnytraveled to the far tip ofSouth America aboard thesailboat, Prototype. Theywanted to experience thesame emotions asthe great explorerswho made the firstscientific explo-rations in the 18thcentury. They fol-lowed in the foot-steps of those artist-navigators, painter-naturalists, geogra-pher-designers, ande t h n o g r a p h e r -adventurers who setout to discover newworlds.Setting sail fromSaint Barth onAugust 24, 2004,they zigzagged through theCaribbean toward Panama, the Galapagos, and EasterIsland. Following a southerncourse they eventuallyencountered the rigors andprofound solitude of thefrozen landscape of Patago-nia. Once around Cap Horn, they set sail for home, returning nine months later, their boat filled with treas-ures they discovered alongthe way. The Gallery To.B Art cur-rently has an exhibit of theimaginary museum createdby the two artists: the “cabi-nets of curiosities” thatretrace the steps of theirvoyage, with signs explain-ing the objects and a mapshowing where they werefound. The collectionincludes strange objects thatMarc de Rosny found alongthe way, as well as his photo

collages of unusual land-scapes with strange forms, plus watercolors that reflectthe structure of icebergs andtopographic studies byStanislas Defize. In addition to the artists’work, there will also be an

installation by filmmakerCedric Robion, who wenton part of the journey. Hehas chronicled all of themoments when StanislasDefize threw one of hisfloating yellow sculptures,or modern vessels for mes-sages (like a message in abottle) out to sea (Defize isstill hoping that at least oneof these will find its wayback to St Barth). “We wanted to tell the storyof our voyage through art,”says Defize, who along withRosny, has invented the ideaof “travel-art,” successfullyblending travel, adventure, and artistic creation. “Wewant people to share ourvoyage and our dreams.”
