If.you’ve.been.to.Neigh-bors,. Inc.,. as. a. client,.

volunteer,. staff. member.or.visitor,.you.know.that.the. social. service. agency.is. bursting. at. the. seams..Sometimes. you. have. to.turn. sideways. to. avoid.bumping. into. someone.or.stepping.on.their.toes.

The. good. news. is. that.the.highly.regarded.agen-cy,.which.serves.South.St..Paul,.West.St..Paul,.Inver.Grove. Heights,. Mendota.Heights,. Mendota,. Sun-fish. Lake. and. Lilydale,.has.found.a.new.home.—.222. Grand. Ave.,. South.St..Paul.

The. new. building,.which. has. been. used. as.office. space,. provides.more. room. for. all. of.Neighbors’.programs,. in-cluding.the.food.shelf,.as.well. as. more. privacy. for.Neighbors’. clients.. Fare-well. 6,800. square. feet,.hello.19,000.square.feet.

According. to. Execu-tive.Director.John.Kemp,.Neighbors. had. been.looking.quietly. for. a. few.years. at. other. properties.with. no. luck.. Once. they.let. others. know. that. a.search.was.on,.the.action.picked. up.. That’s. when.the. agent. for. the. build-ing’s. former. owner. ap-proached.Neighbors.

“We. toured. the. build-ing,. exited. and. called.board.members,”.recalled.Kemp..“It.was.just.right.”

The. new. location. is.just. as. accessible. as. the.current. one. at. 218. S..13th. Ave.,. he. said.. It. is.near. three. bus. stops. and.a. senior. highrise.. Neigh-bor’s.current.location.has.13. parking. spaces;. the.new.one.has.64.

“Sometimes. we. think.we’ve. died. and. gone. to.heaven!”.Kemp.mused.

Renovation. is. sched-uled. to. begin. in. Janu-ary. and. Kemp. expects.to. move. in. at. the. end. of.April.. Two. tenants. that.have.leases.will.remain.in.the. building. until. their.leases.expire.

The. thing. that. Kemp.is. .most.worried.about. is.that.people.won’t.get. the.word. in. a. timely. fash-ion. that. the. agency. has.

moved,. although. a. mar-keting. campaign. will. be.designed. to. inform. the.public..

“That’s. one. of. the.things. that. keeps. me.awake.at.night..That.and.raising. $2.25. million.”.He. was. referring. to. the.3-year. capital. campaign.launched. in. May. to. cov-er. the. costs. of. the. new.building..Kemp.is.excited.at.the.prospect.of.ending.the. campaign. in. 2012,.the. 40th. anniversary. of.Neighbors.

Kemp,. who. joined. the.agency.in.2003,.expressed.gratitude. to. the. city. of.South. St.. Paul,. Dakota.County,. but. most. of. all.the. people,. faith. com-munities. and. businesses.in. the. area. for. support-ing. Neighbors. with. food.drives,. toy. drives. and.winter.coat.drives..It’s.all.been.necessary.because.of.increased.need.

“When. this. building.opened.in.1984,.we.were.serving. 43. families. with.about. 1,000. pounds. of.food. per. month,”. said.Kemp.. “Now,. every.month.we.have.250.fami-lies,.(and.we’re).providing.28,000-30,000. pounds.of. food,. not. including.our.summer.or.Christmas.programs.”

Northern. Dakota.County. is. dotted. with.food. shelves. and. an.amazing.amount.of.need,.said. Kemp.. Nonetheless,.some. people. think. that.people.using.food.shelves.are. “looking. for. a. hand-out.”

“Nothing.could.be.fur-ther.from.the.truth,”.said.Kemp.. “It’s. painful. to.ask. for. help.. They. do. it.because. they.have. to.and.

to. make. sure. their. kids.are. getting. fed.. Half. the.people.who.are.served.are.children..We.have.clients.who. eventually. confide.in. us. that. they. drove. by.three. or. four. times. be-fore.stopping.and.getting.out.of.the.car..That’s.how.hard.it.is.to.ask.for.help.”

How. does. he. remain.optimistic. in. light.of. the.growing.need?

“It’s. easy,”. he. said..“The. volunteers. are. in-credible.. They. come. in.with. bright. smiles. and.happy. attitudes.. The. in-credible. support. that.the. community. gives.us. every. single. day,. ver-bally,. with. envelopes. (of.contributions),. bags. of.groceries.. You. can’t. help.but. feel. positive.. Do. I.get. depressed. with. the.economic. situation?. Do.I. get. worried,. scared. to.death. when. the. Legisla-ture. convenes?  .The. cur-rent. attitude. seems. to.be. to. balance. the. budget.without. raising. taxes,. so.that. means. budget. cuts..I. can. get. very. depressed.about. that..Then. I. come.in. here. and. see. the. staff.and.volunteers..This.staff.is. not. just. here. because.of. a. paycheck. or. a. job..They’re.here.because.they.want.to.be.”

Neighbors signs papers for new building

Once. completely. set-tled.into.the.new.building.and.organized,.Neighbors.will.hold.an.event.to.wel-come.the.public,.donors,.clients. and. volunteers..Kemp. said. he. wants. do-nors. to. see. it. and. be.proud.of. it. and.everyone.to. know. that. it’s. a. good.place. to. seek. assistance.when.they’re.in.need.

Although. the. build-ing. requires. renovation,.including.the.addition.of.an.elevator.to.the.existing.elevator. shaft,. volunteers.are. already. hard. at. work.

there.. With. Christmas.just. around. the. corner,.clothing. and. toys. must.be. sorted. then. displayed.according. to. sizes,. ages,.gender,. and. so. forth. for.the. “Love. Your. Neigh-bor”.program,.which.will.serve. about. 900. families.—.or.2,700.to.2,800.peo-ple.—.during.holidays.

“If.we’re.lucky,.half.will.be. ‘adopted’. through. the.‘Adopt-a-Family’. pro-gram,. and. the. rest. will.be. helped. by. ‘Love. Your.

Neighbor,’”.said.Kemp..Nothing. stops. Neigh-

bors.from.moving.ahead..Not. even. a. move. down.the.road.

“It.will. appeal. to. some.because. you. can. store. so.much”.on.the.devices,.she.said,. “but. there’s. some-thing. about. paper. and.pages,.and.reading.in.the.bathtub.”

The. director. since.1996,. Kroschel’s. connec-tion. to. the. library. runs.deep..As.a.youngster,.she.

participated. in. the. sum-mer. reading. program. for.children.

“The.library.always.had.strong. programming. for.children,. although. there.was. nothing. for. adults.then,”. she. said.. “Now.we.have.book.groups,.in-vite. authors. to. come. in.to. talk,. take. field. trips.to. see. authors.. The. last.group. we. reached. out. to.was. the. teens.. Now. they.have. their. own. room,.away. from. the. children’s.section.. “The. biggest. change.we’ve. seen. over. the. years.is. computerization,”. she.said.. “We. have. so. much.

Jane Kroschel said helping patrons find a great book was one of her biggest joys during her 31 year tenure at the South St. Paul Library.

Once in a lifetime a story will change your heart and your perspective...

John Jenkins, a young journalist, is marking off time at the small-town Marquette Messenger until he can get into the big-league newspapers. After all, nothing significant ever happens in a farming community, he thinks. Then one day Jenkins is given a routine, dull assignment—to write the obituary of an elderly local farmer, Alfred Gutzman. The remarkable untold story Jenkins uncovers through his investigation, happenstance en-counters with people who knew Gutzman, and covert visits to his farm, challenge everything the young reporter holds dear...

Have.you.looked.at.the.price. of. turkeys. lately?.It’s. a. little. too. early. to.tell.what. they.will.be. for.Christmas,. but. at. the.moment. I’ve. seen. prices.for. whole. turkeys. rang-ing. from. $1.55. to. $2.29.a.pound.

While. the.price.of. tur-keys.may.sound.like.a.bit.of. an. esoteric. subject. for.someone.at.Neighbors. to.be.thinking.about,.we.ac-tually.spend.quite.a.bit.of.time. each. year. worrying.about. it.. You. see,. dur-

ing. the.Christmas. season.we’ll. buy. between. 650.and. 700. 14-pound. tur-keys.for.distribution.with.our. Christmas. programs..Three. or. four. years. ago.we.could.buy. turkeys. for.about. 59. cents. a. pound..If. we. have. to. pay. $1.59.a. pound. this. year. that.means. that. every. turkey.we. buy. will. cost. about.$14.more.than.it.did.four.years. ago.. Multiply. that.by. 650. to. 700. turkeys.and. that’s. quite. a. shock.to. our. Christmas. pro-

gram.budget!We. expect. that. by. the.

time.Christmas.gets.here,.we.will.have.served.about.900.families. through.our.Christmas. programs.. We.feel. strongly. that. each.family.should.have.every-thing. needed. to. prepare.a. traditional. Christmas.dinner. so. we. make. sure.they. get. a. turkey,. pota-toes,. stuffing. mix,. gravy.mix,. vegetables. and. the.makings. for. a. pumpkin.pie.. In. many. instances,.families.adopted. through.our.Adopt-A-Family.pro-gram. will. receive. food.directly. from. their. spon-sor.. For. those. adopted.families.where.food.is.not.provided,.and.for.families.served. through. our. Love.Your. Neighbor. program,.we.make.sure.they.receive.food.as.well..

Like. almost. everything.

that. happens. at. Neigh-bors,. these. Christmas.programs.would.not.hap-pen. without. the. incred-ible. support. we. receive.from. our. community..Half. of. the. families. we.serve. through. these. pro-grams.will.be.adopted.by.a. resident,. group. or. an.organization.. The. other.half. will. receive. toys,.clothing. and. gift. items.donated.by.other.people,.groups. and.organizations.in. our. community.. Also,.most. of. the. work. of. or-ganizing. and. coordinat-ing. this. incredibly. busy.and. complex. program. is.performed. by. dozens. of.volunteers.. Neighbors.simply. serves. as. the. con-duit. between. this. gener-ous. community. and. the.people.who.live.among.us.who.need.assistance..

By. the. time. this. col-

umn. gets. into. your.hands,. we. will. be. well.into. the. Christmas. sea-son.. We. started. taking.applications. on. Nov.. 1.and. we’ll. continue. tak-ing. applications. until.Dec.. 15,. and. we’ll. serve.families.right.up.until.the.time.we.close.on.Dec..23..By. now. our. hallways. are.filled.with.packages.wait-ing. to.be.picked.up,. and.our. conference. room. has.long. since. disappeared.since. it. is. being. used. as.an. office. for. our. Christ-mas. programs.. But. it’s.still. not. too. late. for. you.to. get. involved.. You. can.still. adopt. a. family,.drop.off. toys,. gifts. and. cloth-ing,.or.can.make.a.gift.of.money. to. help. support.our.Christmas.programs..

I. never. cease. to. be.amazed.at.the.people.and.organizations. who. year.

after. year. adopt. one. or.more. families.. When. we.talk. with. these. people.they.tell.us.of.the.joy.that.they.and.their.families.or.colleagues. receive. from.the. experience.. It’s. not.uncommon. for. someone.to. tell. us. that. being. able.to. adopt. a. family. is,. for.them,. the. highlight. of.the.Christmas.season..

If. you. and. your. fam-ily.or.someone.you.know.is. in. need. of. assistance,.don’t. hesitate. to. call..That’s. why. we’re. here.. If.you’d. like. to. help. others.in. the. community,. don’t.hesitate. to. call. either..That’s. also. why. we’re.here.

Peace,. joy. and. God’s.blessing. on. all,. not. only.during. this. Christmas.season. but. in. the. year.ahead.
