Well, this is it! I leave this office with mixed emotions. I’m thrilled at what we have accomplished throughout this year and saddened that it all happened so quickly. Was it just yesterday that we dealt with the challenges of structural and cosmetic damages to our headquarters? Was it just yesterday that we faced serious political challenges from our State Legislators about Florida’s state

employees’ retirement issues? Was it just yesterday that we worked diligently to overcome potential state budget issues for our college system? There is much merit to the adage which says: “Time does fly quickly.” Through it all, I was extremely proud of the way that the AFC responded and the strategies our colleges put in place to adapt to the changing environment.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Despite our challenges, we have many success stories to tell. We have gained nearly 1,400 new members. Our membership roll stands at 8,600 and we have granted full commission status to the Healthcare Education Commission. We have heeded the call to servant leadership and provided services and monies to fund initiatives in support of Haitian earthquake victims, the families

impacted by the oil spill on the Gulf Coast, the Boys and Girls Club of Dania and most recently we donated $660 and fed 4,500 families through

Second Harvest of Jacksonville. I enjoyed hearing of the efforts put forth by our chapters in helping us to meet our service project goals.

I would like to encourage each chapter and commission to join in the Foundation’s campaign to “Burst the Balloon.” We have a wonderful building and we are strategically located in the heart of

the Capitol city. I am sure that we will reach our goal and in no time, we will own our building. But, we can’t do it without your help. Another success story is the best ever Annual Convention. Wow! From the starting moment of the Convention with the beautiful professional Jaguar Cheerleaders to the relaxing massages, to the record number of exhibitors and

sponsors to the opening party at River City Brewing Company to the Foundation’s Auction to the Presidential Gala featuring celebrity motivational speaker Stedman Graham to the closing luncheon, we could feel the synergy at all levels. We had high attendance, and conducted a great deal of

very important business including renaming our Association. As you might have heard we are now The Association of Florida Colleges and soon our new logo will be selected. In fact, we are making plans to reveal this new logo at the next Leadership Conference.

In addition to my personal thanks and appreciation to the 2010 Executive Committee and Board

of Directors, I must recognize the hard work of the greatest headquarters staff—Mike, Marsha, Eileen, Adrienne, Tina and Dave. I will miss it all, but, I rest well knowing that the incoming officers will take us to the next level.

Obviously, I could not have done my job effectively without the help and support of you the member. In all that I have accomplished, I would not have been successful if it had not been for you. I truly enjoyed and appreciated

this opportunity to serve you as your 2010 president. My term as president was something I will never forget. I wish each of you the very best in the future and hope you have the happiest of holidays.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CEO MESSAGE

It was a long time coming but we all knew it would eventually happen. After 40 years as the FACC, our Association is now known as the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC). With the new name comes the opportunity to re-brand our image and restate our purpose. To that end, your Association leadership is wasting no time in planning for our future.

When talking with members as well as college leaders around the state, I hear some fairly consistent themes with regard to the role to be played by the Association as part of the Florida college system. Two items seem to be at the top of everyone’s list – advocacy and professional development.

Advocacy is an important role for us and, I believe, one of the main reasons members join. It is my job to “translate” the myriad of legislative bills and other governmental actions for our members, to help them understand the potential changes and impact

those bills may have on their jobs. We lobbyists talk in “legislative-speak” so it is incumbent upon me to express those issues in terms you all can relate to. Most importantly, as a result of being well informed, when we need to pull the trigger for you to actually advocate by visiting legislators, and writing letters, faxes and emails, you have all the information and

comprehension you need to effectively communicate concerns to your local legislative delegation.

Professional development is another vital role we play and one I know is important to your college leaders. As we segue into 2011 you will begin to hear about our Certified College Professional initiative (CCP). The purpose of the CCP initiative is two-fold. First, the program can provide significant value-added for membership in the AFC. Second, the program will enhance the AFC’s role as the primary professional development provider for the Florida College System.

Professional certification is a way to validate working knowledge and expertise in a particular occupation, or group of related occupational areas. A voluntary professional certification program can contribute significantly toward the setting of standards that leads towards higher performance on specific job tasks. Certification also provides aspiration for the standards and the quality that comes with it, as well

as the opportunity to become recognized as a skilled and knowledgeable professional in a system where no such designation exists.

It is important to recognize that the “CCP” will be a designation, not a license. Licensure is a regulated domain related to specific standards and training in a specific

industry or field. Licensure is based on a set of “minimum requirements” designed to protect the general public from incompetence. Conversely, voluntary certification endorses a broader set of knowledge related to an industry and occupational area. It is often built upon the combination of both to demonstrate enhanced competence and

knowledge. There are many certification programs that exist where there are no statutory regulatory requirements.

To conceive this initiative, I researched several other similar certification programs. Among them are the Certified Association Executive (CAE) and Certified Meeting Planner (CMP). These are two such designations offered through my own professional association, the American Society of Association Executives. Examining those models helped me move my concept forward for the CCP. To codify the concept, the following guiding principles emerged:

1. The CCP shall be a portable designation recognized by Florida College System institutions.

2. The CCP shall promote individual and professional skills, as well as college system knowledge.

3. The CCP shall add to an individual’s resume to enhance his/her opportunity for advancement.

4. The CCP shall provide opportunities for candidates to learn aspects of the college system to which they may not be exposed to in their day-to-day work environment.

5. The CCP shall provide a way for colleges to motivate and reward employees.

6. The CCP shall enhance the AFC’s role in professional development of its members.

Each candidate who desires the designation will apply for the program. Applicants will be required to “qualify” their application on established standards yet to be determined. Each approved candidate

will then earn “credits”. Credits can be earned via multiple mechanisms including such as:

1. Complete a core content curriculum to be determined;

2. Participation in AFC chapter activities and events;

3. Attendance at AFC/Chapter/College professional development programs;

4. Earning post-secondary degree or industry recognized credential.

At our recent executive committee retreat, AFC 2011 President Evelyn Ward embraced this concept and made it one of her major goals for the year. Moreover, the AFC Executive Committee voted it up as the pre-eminent professional development focus for the future of the Association. Former Association presidents Dr. Jeff Albritton (ESC) and Dr. Jeff Peters (PBSC) have been designated as co-chairs to represent the membership in the developmental phases of the program. Shortly after the New Year, we will flesh out the committee with other experts to begin the process of indentifying the core standards and content, and devising a curriculum pathway. Our goal is to roll out the program in earnest in Naples during the 2011 AFC Convention and sign up the first class to begin in 2012. I have also bounced the concept off of several of our college presidents who were all very supportive and committed to providing some type of incentive for their employees to participate.

Tallahassee, Florida – Reflecting the strong and ever-growing role of the Florida’s state college system, the Florida Association of Community Colleges (FACC) today announced it has officially become the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC). Over the next few months, the FACC will complete the process of changing its name and branding.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to change the name of our association to better reflect the exciting changes in our state system and to better represent our constituents - the Florida colleges and their employees.,” said Evelyn Ward, AFC’s 2011 president and publications coordinator at Chipola College in Marianna.

The decision to change the name demonstrates the new reality about how much Floridians depend on the flexibility and opportunity provided by the state colleges. It also was predicated by the state-level changes mandated by the Florida Legislature beginning in 2001 to allow community colleges to offer four-year baccalaureate degree programs to meet increasing student demand. To date, over two-thirds of the state’s “community colleges” have morphed into “colleges” or “state colleges,” dropping “community” from their names

and now offering bachelors degrees. As a result, the new Florida College System now includes institutions with all three name designations and the new degree offerings, yet the primary mission to offer associate degrees and workforce development programs remains the same.

The process to change the name began well over a year ago with an ad-hoc committee researching the best possible names to encompass the changes reflected within the Florida College System. After an extensive year-long vetting process, the name change

was approved by the membership during the annual convention on November 19, 2010.

“A name change for an established organization like the FACC is a very big decision but we look forward to the opportunities for re-branding that this presents,” said Michael Brawer, Chief Executive Officer of the Association.

The Florida Association of Community Colleges was organized in 1949 as the Florida Association of Public

Junior Colleges by the presidents of Florida’s first four public junior colleges. In 1971, it became the Florida Association of Community Colleges when the state adopted the plan for a statewide system of regional institutions.

The AFC is among the most unique organizations serving any community college system in the nation. The FACC is the only college Association which represents all employees, presidents, and trustees associated with the Florida College System. Today, all 28 of the state’s public colleges support the work of the Association as do nearly 9,000 individual employee and retiree members.

AFC Logo Contest Official Rules

The Association of Florida Colleges (AFC), formerly known as the Florida Association of Community Colleges is sponsoring a Logo Design Contest to find a Service Mark to exemplify its new identity. Entrants are asked to submit logo designs to be used as the exclusive property of AFC.

The FACC Foundation is pleased to announced it has changed it name commensurate to the Association name change. It is now known as the Association of Florida Colleges Foundation, Inc. Andre Hawkins (IRSC) will remain as Chair. Dr. Burt Harres (PHCC) will continue to serve as Vice-Chair.

At its 2010 annual meeting on November 18, four new Board members were installed. Dr. Chuck Mojock (LSCC) has agreed to serve and is completing the vacant college president seat through 2012. Also coming on-Board is past FACC president Carol Quinn from Pensacola State College who replaces Dr. Milt Jones, retired PHCC president,

former FACC president, and founding member of the Foundation. Tracy Porter, Foundation Director at Polk State College, will replace another founding member, Jeff Schembera, GCCC lobbyist. Finally, we welcome Dr. Mary Bruno, Dean of the Applied Technology College at Daytona State who replaces long-time Board member Dr. Bill Mullowney (VCC).

All three we play vital roles in moving forward the Burst the Balloon Capital Campaign to pay off the AFC Building in downtown Tallahassee. We look forward to their involvement and welcome them the Foundation Board.

PALM BEACH STATE CHAPTER AFC TO INTRODUCE NEW RECOGNITION AWARDThe Palm Beach State chapter of the Association of Florida Colleges will roll out the Annual Supervisor/Administrator Award during spring 2011. The award will recognize a supervisor or administrator who demonstrates support for the AFC through their continuing valid membership and support for staff members’ participation in activities. Since 2003, the Palm Beach State College chapter of the Association of Florida Colleges has awarded 68 scholarships to members, their spouses, children and grandchildren. This year, eight individuals have been chosen to receive AFC scholarships made possible by on-campus fundraisers. Varied amounts have been available in the past; however, each of these scholarships is worth $500 divided by fall and spring semesters of the 2010/2011 academic year.

Dr. Edward Jordan, St. Johns River Community College’s AFC’s Chapter’s Immediate Past-President, was recognized at the 2010 AFC Convention in Jacksonville as the chapter’s “Unsung Hero.” Dr. Jordan has been active within his AFC chapter for

more than six years, always willing to assist with any project or event, doing whatever it takes to get things done. He has been the Chapter’s Palatka Campus Representative, Membership Chair, President-Elect, President, and Region Director Elect. Dr. Jordan is SJRCC’s Dean of Counseling, Advising, and Student Services.

Congratulations to Sally Myers, counselor on St. Johns River Community College’s Palatka campus, who received the Debra J. Hay Distinguished Service Award at the Florida Association of Community College Student Development Commission’s 43rd annual spring conference. The award is presented annually to a member of the SDC who has provided significant and impactful service to the commission.

Myers’ FACC Chapter nominated her for this award due to her many years of service and dedication to the commission. While serving as the commission’s past-chair for two years, Myers was instrumental in fundraising efforts and the overall development of the commission. In addition to serving as commission chair, chair-elect and Region II representative, Myers was an active committee member, a liaison to the Council on Student Affairs, and an exemplary practice judge and chair.

Myers will be added to the list of notable recipients of the Debra J. Hay Distinguished Service Award. “When I received the award, I was asked if I knew what an honor it was,” said Myers. “When I think of the 13 recipients who preceded me and the contributions they have made, it is certainly overwhelming.”

Pasco-Hernando Community College’s volleyball coach Kim Whitney has been chosen as the recipient of the Two-Year College Northeast-Southeast Region Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Whitney will be honored and officially presented the award at the 2010 AVCA Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday, Dec. 16, at the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention. Whitney will also be representing the region on the 2010 AVCA National Coach of the Year ballot. This is Whitney’s seventh season as head coach for PHCC’s volleyball team. The team recently won the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. With a five-set victory over Johnson County Community College, Kansas, the PHCC volleyball team made history as the first college from Florida to capture the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship.

Whitney attended Kansas State University where she still holds the records for the most sets played, double-doubles and the most digs. This is her second AVCA Two-Year College Northeast-Southeast Region Coach of the Year distinction, the last coming in 2006.

The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) recently presented regional awards to a South Florida Community College science professor and a former trustee at its 41st annual Leadership Congress in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Erik Christensen, professor of physics, astronomy, and mathematics and chair of the college’s Natural Sciences Department, received the 2010 Faculty Member Award for the Southern Region. Wendell “Winkie” Williams, a former member of the SFCC District Board of Trustees, received the 2010 Trustee Leadership Award for the Southern Region.

ACCT is a non-profit educational organization that represents more than 6,500 community college trustees and 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States and throughout the world. Each year, ACCT presents five awards in five regions of the United States, as well as five national awards.

Christensen came to SFCC seven years ago, following a distinguished, 22-year career in the U.S. Navy. As an educator, Christensen has developed new approaches to teaching difficult subjects and has infused both his traditional classroom and online courses with cutting-edge technology and new methods of communication. He has shared his approaches with SFCC and other community college

instructors through Web-based workshops, at the annual conferences of the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC), and at national conference of Desire To Learn (D2L).

As an administrator, Christensen has been actively involved in developing the standards of knowledge and ability students should possess upon completing general education courses. He helped create an Academic Master Plan that determines how finances are spent on upgrading technology throughout the college’s four locations; a new strategic plan that outlines the college’s goals for the next six years; and a new Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) that will help freshmen navigate the first year of college. He is now assisting with the college’s process of being reaffirmed for its accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

This year, Christensen became an official Open Textbook Advocate/Trainer with the Community College Collaborative (CCOTC). Three years ago, Christensen adopted and modified open textbooks for his physics classes, thereby reducing each student’s textbook costs from $222 to $13. He shares his knowledge of open textbooks through national online discussion boards and other forums. Additionally, Christensen is a member of the Activity Based

KUDOS CONGRATSPhysics Faculty Institute (ABPFI) and is a reader for the Educational Testing Service (ETS) advanced placement examinations in physics. SFCC’s Student Government Association (SGA) named him the Full-Time Faculty Member of the Year for 2004-05 and Instructor of the Year for 2006. In 2005, he received the SFCC President’s Award for Employee of the Year, and in 2006 he received the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Develop (NISOD) Excellence Award.

“I am deeply humbled and honored by this award,” Christensen said. “It is such a privilege to serve our college and to know that every day I am helping to achieve our shared vision of enriching our communities through education, one life at a time.”

Winkie Williams is an SFCC alum who served seven years on the SFCC District Board of Trustees (1976-83) and was a founding member and president of the SFCC Foundation, Inc. In 1983, Williams became a charter member of the Community College Coordinating Council, which evolved into the State Board of Community Colleges. “I want to be part of building Florida into the top-ranked United States educational system. I support excellent educational opportunities for everyone, regardless of his or her position in life,” he said at the time. Williams served on the State Board for 18 years – longer than any other charter member – and was its chairman twice before retiring in 2000. That same year, the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) recognized Williams’ dedication to community colleges by presenting him with its highest honor, the LeRoy Collins Award.

“I believe in the community college system,” Williams said. “After high school, many students cannot afford to go to universities. With community colleges, all students have the opportunity to earn an associate degree or learn vocational skills.”

“We are very proud of Winkie Williams and Erik Christensen for representing our college with distinction,” said Dr. Norman L. Stephens Jr., SFCC president. “It is rare for a college to have one award recipient in a given year since there are over 1,200 members colleges in the association and only five regions. It is quite unique and perhaps unprecedented for any college to have two recipients of these regional awards. These expressions illustrate the essence of this year’s Association of Florida Colleges (formerly FACC) Annual Convention held in Jacksonville, FL. At this event, there is so much to do, see, and so many interesting people to meet! One must come prepared and be determined to

absorb as much knowledge as possible. At this year’s conference there were over 50 exhibitors displaying a wide range of products, information, and other materials, in addition to the 30 plus sessions. To get the most from the conference experience, it is best to enlist a mentor to guide you through the events and help you plan ahead. As a guidebook, attendees are provided a program that describes all the Convention events-listing dates, times, and locations.

My roommate Lynn Speer had previously attended Convention so she briefed me on what to expect; however, the Annual Convention turned out to be much more than I predicted! As a newcomer, Annual Convention was a bit overwhelming. When you check in as a first-time attendee, you are given a ribbon to attach to your badge. As if it was a Scarlet Letter, I was hesitant to wear my golden yellow First Timer Ribbon, but it ended up being a true gem because it was a conversation piece! Many attendees came to me to inquire how my experience was going as a first timer. They wanted to know what college I represented, what area I worked in, what sessions I was planning to attend or had attended, and how everything was going. At Convention, everyone was happy to help, share advice and knowledge, as well as encouragement. Although my program never left my side, having a personal guide proved invaluable. Lynn and other seasoned veterans provided me with insider information that enhanced my Convention experience. Seminar sessions were not only interesting, but fun and informative, as presenters captivated their audience. I do have one regret; I neglected to bring business cards. Exchanging business cards would have enabled me to build stronger relationships and networks with some of

the people I met within the Great 28 as well as some of the exhibitors.

This year’s Convention had particular purpose and special meaning to me. While I had attended last year’s Convention in Orlando, I was unable to stay in its entirety feeling that I had missed a large amount of good information...boy did I ever! I was thrilled to be attending the 2010 Convention with one of my favorite co-workers, Lola Christian, but I was more than anxious and ready to take a d v a n t a g e of all the professional development opportunities that were offered at C o n v e n t i o n a n d fundamental to my growth. As I attended s e s s i o n after session, I found that I was obtaining constructive advice that could be applied to my current job and responsibilities, my current professional and personal development goals, but most importantly, my future. If I could share one bit of advice…book your hotel early. There is nothing like the convenience of being in the convention’s designated hotel while also positioning yourself to enlarge your network most effectively. This year’s convention far exceeded our expectations due to the smooth transitions and flow of events. The convention provided a diverse pool of seminars with exceptional presenters whom delivered with impact and effectiveness. We can positively say that we left the Convention feeling that our purpose and goals were successfully accomplished.

What can I say but once again our members have come through for our Service Project to support Second Harvest of Jacksonville. I want to thank Pat Barfield and Region One for their hard work in the collection and organization for the pickup of the food. With the delivery to Second Harvest on Tuesday and the two pallets of food that was collected at the hotel we were able to collect over 3,000 lbs of food along with donations totaling $660.00. Your generously will help feed a large number of families in need for the service area of Second Harvest. For every dollar we donated Second Harvest is able to provide enough food for seven meals, which means that our dollar donation was able to provide 4,620 meals to families in need for the holiday. We are an organization that is always willing to give back when asked. I have enjoyed being your Service Project chair for the 2010 year and I am look forward to continuing for the 2011 year. The Student Development Commission had an excellent year. The Commission was again awarded Commission of the Year at the State Convention held at the Jacksonville Hyatt Regency, November 17 – 19, 2010.

The Commission ended the year with the Business Meeting and the Professional Development presentation by Dr. Hank Clemons, President and CEO of the Society of Emotional Intelligence. Dr. Clemons presentation addressed the topic of the “Value of Emotional Intelligence in delivering Quality Services to perpetuate Student Success”. Our Exemplary Practice winner, “PBSC – Resume Writing Wizard” was presented by Gail Tomei and Jim Wallen of Palm Beach State College.

The Commission also raffled off a Netbook and raised $440.00 with all the proceeds going to the Second Harvest

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION WINS COMMISSION OF THE YEAR

Our retirees at the FACC Annual Convention in Jacksonville joined together to present a new version of the classic 50/50 to raise $423.00 for our commission. Dorma Gottlieb of Miami Dade College went home with an extra $211.50 for holiday shopping. We donated one dollar for each of our 286 members to the Burst the Balloon Campaign sponsored by the FACC Foundation in honor of our 20th Anniversary and were proud to be the first to do so when the campaign was announced. We should all support the campaign to pay off the mortgage payment due in 2015. Thanks to Debbie Jakubcin and her ‘Fit Over 60’ presentation at our annual meeting, we can enter the New Year with new tools for staying fit. Wish you all could have joined us for her fun and interactive session. As if this were not enough to make this 61st FACC Convention special, the Retirees Commission won the distinction of Exemplary Performance in membership development in recognition of our 74 new members. It’s out with the old and in with the new for 2011: Chair-Vivanne Bonsall, Chair Elect-Joanne Hutton; and once again, Secretary/Treasurer-Joan Young.

This year at our annual convention the Association of Florida Colleges Foundation (formerly the FACC Foundation) Silent Auction was an overwhelming success. It earned close to $6000 which is more than double the amount the auction earned the previous year. The funds raised will go directly to the AFC Foundation Capital Fund, which is being used to help payoff the mortgage on our AFC Building in downtown Tallahassee.
