In the summer of 1979, Sony Japanunveiled a new music player calledWalkman cassette player; it was the firstlow-cost, portable music player. Revo-lutionary - and it kicked the old 8 track-cartridge music player into touch. It soldover 200 million units.
October 2010 Sony announced that itwould halt production of the Walkmanin Japan. The emergence of the CD hadcertainly weakened demand for thecassette Walkman in Western Europeand in the Americas, however, whatreally made the use of walkmananachronistic was the emergence ofMP3 files and devices such as the iPod.Suddenly a new age generation is bornand a new culture of distributing infor-mation and entertainment took over thereins of our lives.
As we engage and grapple with lifeduring a period of more governmentcuts in budget and public services, andby coincidence, a period of Lent, itseem to me that we are entering a
different era not only within the bodypolitic of the nation, but also in ourpersonal spiritual lives. The new iPodage, the emergence of new frontier ofdistributing information and entertain-ment, the Twitter followers, texting andsurfing whiz kids all bring and introducenew dictions into the repertoire of ourknowledge and language. It may just betime for some of us to learn a newlanguage, a new way of life andacquaint ourselves with what the futurebrings.
Talking about the future then, in thebiblical gospel book of Matthew, Jesusteaches about worry and he challengeshis listeners to trust in God, theirheavenly Father, who in His benevo-lence fed the birds of the air - as theydon’t gather into barns, and clothed thelilies of the field who don’t toil or spin, yet God provided for these more thanKing Solomon in his splendour.Thelesson for us as we face the future, theemergence of new ways of distributinginformation brings to us new ways of
engaging in mission and propagation ofthe gospel to a new generation. Also, planning for tomorrow is time wellspent; worrying about tomorrow is timewasted.
Sometimes it’s difficult to tell the differ-ence, however, careful planning isthinking about goals, steps, andschedules and trusting in God’sguidance. When done properly, planning and praying about God’sguidance can help alleviate worry.
The worrier, by contrast, is consumedby fear and finds it difficult to trustothers, talk less of God. Worry stopsyou from acting and it fills the individualwith different thoughts and pushes onetowards different directions. We may notknow what that future holds but what weknow is that we are here today and wecan certainly trust in God who is able. LET GO and LET GOD.

Public Session
• Police sergeant Pamela gordon told us of
ongoing investigations into a series of van-
dalisms and a break-in to premises in the
greshop industrial estate which were being
followed up. foot patrols are being carried
out in the high street following incidences
of illegal parking and road traffic patrols are
checking vehicles as part of a drive to
reduce Road Casualties.
• Community Cllr J mackenzie briefed the
meeting on steps he had taken to draw the
attention of the secretary of state for
scotland, by a letter to him, to the concern
of the Community Council and residents of
forres into the risk of flooding of the River
findhorn and the recent announcement that
the funding of the flood relief scheme, due
to a mix up, would not be available. he
questioned the lack of support given by
sePa to the suggestion that dredging the
river would reduce the risk in favour of pre-
serving the habitat for bugs and the local
authority for accepting that objection.
• he also raised the subject of booking
places in the town hall and the fact that on
the first day of the year a queue formed to
fully book the premises for the full year. this
failed to allow the smaller clubs the oppor-
tunity to avail themselves of the facilities.
moray Cllr ogilvie said that the system of
lets in the town hall was being investigated
and local groups would each get one
booking initially.
• Cllr mackenzie drew attention to the
Cairngorm national Park and its bound-
aries and asked if more of moray could be
included. he said that at present the Park
stopped on the dava moor which meant
that there was no mention of forres in the
Park literature. this did not encourage
visitors to extend or expand their range of
exploration.
• Cllr s ferris addressed the meeting on the
topic of Community generation, as a means
of raising funding for special projects
pertinent to the town. he suggested that the
town could erect Community turbines on
Common good land and use them to raise,
by way of the subsidies available, funds for
the Common good fund & therefore the
town. he sought the approval of the
Community Council to approach the energy
saving trust and Community Power & light
companies to investigate further the feasi-
bility of the grants available and the scope
of the project using the Community Council
as a valid organisation to oversee the
project. Cllr hellyer pointed out that solar
panels could be fitted to the roofs of all
local authority buildings and this would go
a long way to reducing energy costs for the
rate payers. a member of the Public pointed
out that the turbines would require to be
connected to the grid, and that also
windmills were proven engineering but
required a steady source of wind. Cllr ferris
said that from his experience flying in the
area 15 knots east or west was common.
the Community Council agreed that Cllr
ferris could initiate assessment of the
project.
Secretary’s Report
• letters were received from moray Council,
nhs grampian, the asCC and a moP.
• Community services consulted us on the
proposed sale of ground adjacent to 3
mannachie Road. the Chair said that he
was convinced that the area at fleurs had
been Common good & while the area was
small any proceeds should be credited to
the fund.
• the secretary said that he and Cllr hellyer
had attended 2 meetings called by nhs
grampian, in the Community Centre, to
discuss a future sustainable health service
for the forres area. at those meetings we
had been told that it cost £1.2m to run
leanchoil per year for the benefit of 170
patients. Cllr hellyer felt this was disingen-
uous as it appeared to take no account of
the many and varied clinics using the
building. While mCh&sCP were consulting
us they were still not being open and un-
ambiguous.
• a member of the Public contacted the
Community Council asking if the
Community Council would call a Public
meeting on the concerns of leanchoil
hospital and its possible closure. members
felt that this was the only way that the public
would be able to input their feelings and in-
structed the secretary to book the town hall
and publicize the meeting.
External Groups Report
• youth Rep Ross Kennedy told the meeting
that forres academy Pupils forum were
discussing using the Community Centre for
a drop in Centre on Wednesday nights.
• Cllr duncan said that 2 students had been
chosen for mount dora.
• Cllr mackenzie told the meeting that a start
had been made in transferring archives
from the tolbooth to the greshop.
• Cllr maclean told moray Cllr ogilvie that it
had come to his attention that the moray
Council Planning department did not submit
plans to sport scotland for consideration
because they knew that refusal would be
automatic on sites which were used for
sporting activities. this affected both the
proposed health Centre site at thornhill
and the Redco milne site at Bogton.
Treasurer’s Report
• the treasurer informed the meeting that
our account stood at £1041.61, with £15.00
to be deducted for the asCC subscription.
A.O.C.B.
• Cllr Kennedy said he was concerned at the
Bill passing through the english Parliament
changing the hours of daylight to suit
southern england without consideration for
the north of scotland. Cllr ferris said that
vehicles & street lighting were better now.
the Bill, it was believed is for a trial period.
Both moray Cllr ogilvie & Cllr mackenzie
said that rural communities would be
against it.
Next Meeting
the next meeting will be held on thursday
19th may 2011.

Herb and Parmesan Crusted Salmon with
Salsa Verde
With the fishing season well and truly here andSalmon being caught in the rivers of Speyside, whatbetter dish to signal the start of what we hope willbe a warm Summer. At Knockomie we have revi-talised our lunch menus and this Herb Crusted Salmonis proving a real favourite.
Throughout May we are offering a 2 course lunchmenu for just £7.95 per person. What are you waitingfor!
Serves 4
25grm finely grated fresh parmesan2 x tablespoons finely chopped parsley50 grm Fine Wholemeal BreadcrumbsSalt and freshly Ground Pepper4 x 180grm Boneless, skinless Salmon Fillets
Salsa Verde
2 x dessert spoon capers2 x dessert spoon pickled gherkins½ x 35grm pack of curly or flat leaf parsley1 x generous bunch picked basil leaves1 x generous bunch of picked mint leaves2 x dessert spoon Dijon Mustard2 x tablespoon White wine vinegar150ml Olive oilSalt and freshly Ground Pepper
Mix the parmesan, chopped parsley and bread-crumbs together. Season with the salt and pepper.
Place the mixture on a large plate or tray. Coatthe salmon fillets entirely in the mixture and place ona lightly oiled baking tray. Place in the oven and cookat 180̊ C for 20minutes.
Whilst the salmon is cooking make the SalsaVerde. Place the capers, gherkins, parsley, basil andmint in to a food processor and whiz until all finelychopped.
Add the mustard and vinegar and whiz again.
Whilst the mixer is running gradually drizzle theolive oil in to the mixture until all added.
Add the salt and pepper to taste and you'redone! The great thing about Salsa Verde is that youcan store in an sealed jar in the fridge and it willkeep for a couple of weeks. It's great with chickenand white fish too!
Once the salmon is cooked remove from the ovenand serve with crushed new potatoes and a crispsalad.

I had a friend on Facebook this month askme about crayon marks that his son hadmade on their beautifully painted creamwalls at home and how to go aboutremoving it. here are three simple remedies to an oftenfrustrating toddler situation.
1. Hairspray - lightly spray the affected areawith hairspray, then gently working in smallcircles rub the area with a damp cloth. Twoto three treatments maybe required.
2. Toothpaste - Dab a small amount oftoothpaste on a cloth and gently work intomark on the wall. Wipe away any residuewith a damp cloth.
3. Brasso - Apply as per toothpaste but invery small quantities.
And remember not to rub too hard as the paintwill come off the wall.

The award winning Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch Centre gives a wonderful opportunity to view one of our iconic and spectacular birds of prey close up and in their natural habitat. The site is an old quarry resulting from a volcanic magma chamber and is an Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in its own right. Scottish Natural Heritage are now designing interpretation highlighting the geology of the quarry. The centre has been open since 2002 and has grown in stature every year The site is regularly mentioned in local and national press and has also featured occasionaly on national TV. We have also won several prestigious awards for tourism and customer care including the highly acclaimed Scottish Thistle Award twice and the Northern Lights award. The centre is open daily from April to September, with all ability access and toilets. The interpreta-tive centre and hide are staffed by knowledge-able and friendly Forestry Commission staff and volunteers, ensuring the visitors' experience is a memorable one. We have CCTV coverage giving close up viewing of the nest site, peregrines, quarry and all it's inhabitants. Excellent viewing facilities within the quarry itself offer the visitor a rare insight into our wonderful north east wildlife. Feeding stations at the visitor centre and our top hide give visitors the opportunity to observe red squirrels, a huge array of woodland birds and last season we were really priviledged to view a family of pine martens at the feeding station, literally inches away from the viewing windows. Binoculars and telescopes are available for visitor's use if required.
Huntly RaptorsThe birds have also done really well with nineteen young peregrines (eyasses) successfully fledging over the past eight years. Eighteen of these have had rings fitted.Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch has so much to offer everyone from the serious bird watcher to a family outing or even a new experience for those not having had the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful countryside. We can also offer tailor made visits for schools and other groups. If you wish to visit the centre and discover what we can offer then get in touch with one of the wardens on 01466 760790.We also have places for volunteer wardens of all ages including junior volunteer wardens aged 12-16. THis is a project that has been very successful with many junior wardens returning year after year to the Centre. We are always looking to encourage and involve more volunteers in the project. Australia is a huge destination for many, and is of course
about as far as you can get in distance from home. Whether
it is Sydney, Melbourne or one of Australia’s other fantastic cities there is always
plenty to do. There is culture and entertainment, live music and festivals and art galleries
and museums.
On the way and the return there are a variety of stopovers – we will help you make the
best use of your time in cities such as Bangkok, Hong Kong, Dubai or San Francisco, or
relaxing on a beautiful South Pacific Island such as Raratonga. The country is so vast that
it covers 3 differing time zones, and it is around 2,800 miles from Perth in the west to
Brisbane in the east.
One of the world’s most famous cities Sydney is loved for its Opera House, Harbour
Bridge and lifestyle. Melbourne and its surrounds are particularly popular with
sports enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors. There is the world
heritage wilderness of Queensland’s Fraser Island with its massive sand
dunes, coloured-sand cliffs, silent rivers and 120km of spectacular
beaches. There are freshwater lakes and towering rain forests with
rare plants and bird species, and from August to October you may well spot a
humpback whale.
There are several ways of getting about in Australia, including the flexibility of
a motorhome, self-drive, escorted tours generally by coach, and trains such
as the Tilt train from Brisbane to Cairns and the Ghan train from Adelaide to
Alice Springs. When you visit Uluru (Ayers Rock), the world’s largest
monolith, a sunrise or a sunset tour with an Aboriginal guide
will be an unforgettable experience.

women
Moray Business Women (MBW) was established in 2007 to help women working in the Moray area that have an interest in business and networking. Since then, MBW has grown to become one of the most active and largest women’s clubs in Scotland. Its purpose is to promote women’s role within the community through various events which are designed to help women in
their professional and personal interests. This can be anything from listening to an inspirational guest speaker at one of its monthly meetings to getting the chance to try out some archery skills at a local venue. Whatever the event, MBW provides a real
opportunity for women to get together, not only to network from a business or professional
perspective, but to share experiences, lessons learned and generally have
some fun.One of MBW’s key priorities is to provide much needed support to
local charities. Since it’s inception in 2007, MBW has supported many local
charities such as Aberlour Childcare, the Pinto Fund and Moray Women’s Aid. This
year it is supporting a further 3 charities namely, Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, Moray Council on Addictions and Moray Sensory Services. It organises programmed events throughout the year which sees many of its members participate in fun runs, race nights, and various other events to raise money for such worthwhile causes. For 2011, MBW’s aim is to continue its outstanding work on behalf of its chosen charities. It has also recently launched a ‘Mentoring Scheme’ for women who are setting up in business or who are already in the infancy of running their business. MBW has a wealth of skills and experience in women from all
walks of life who are either self employed or in employ-ment. It recognizes how
difficult and lonely it can be for women to branch out on their own or just to get some sound business advice and support. MBW has therefore decided to offer the scheme free of charge to its members and hopes it might encourage new business and employment in the local community.
If anyone would like more information on what MBW has to offer, please contact Tina Mason, MBW President on [email protected] or visit the MBW website.

history
Elgin Museum continues to receive the occasional tourist expecting to find the “Elgin marbles”, probably having by-passed their location in London. We even used to have bags of children’s marbles, available as a consolation prize. What are the “Elgin marbles”? They are the marble architectural sculptures brought to Britain by Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, from the temple, the Parthenon, built on the Acropolis of Athens between 447 and 438 BC. The building had survived largely intact until 1687; it then suffered an explosion in a bombardment when in use as a gunpowder store, after which the sculptures suffered from ongoing damage and piecemeal sale.In 1799, Elgin became ambassador to Constantinople (Istanbul), capital of the Ottoman Empire, which then included most of Greece. As a personal gesture, in return for a diplomatic intervention, the local authorities allowed him to record the remaining monuments, and later to allow their embarkation for Britain. The sculptures survived the sinking of the “Mentor” and Elgin subsequently sold them to the British Museum, where, controversially, they remain. The Scottish sculptor, John Henning (1771 – 1851) saw the marbles soon after they arrived in Britain and was so impressed that he obtained permission to draw and make models of them. Using earlier drawings to help him work out the order of the proces-sion depicted in the frieze, Henning carved miniature impressions in slate, from which casts were made in white plaster. Classical sculpture and casts like these became immensely popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.By a quirk of fate, Elgin Museum has a set of
these 2” by 6” casts on display. Originally gifted to the Museum by Louise, Countess of Seafield in 1886, they disappeared to resurface in someone’s attic in 2003! Also, on loan from the present Earl of Elgin, we have two of John Henning’s original drawings, which show the power and beauty of the horses in the original sculptures.Returning to the original question, why did a British diplomat, whose main residence was Broom Hall in Fife, have the title 7th Earl of Elgin? For a closer geographical link, we can go to Kinloss Abbey, ten miles west of Elgin. Edward Bruce, the father of the 1st Earl, was in 1583 both parson of Torie, in Fife, and associated with the abbey of Kinloss. He became abbot, and later Lord Bruce of Kinloss when Kinloss became a temporal lordship and barony in 1604. It was his third son, Thomas who became 1st Earl of Elgin in 1633, probably as a reward from King Charles I for contributing to the pomp of his coronation in Scotland. A fortnight later, Thomas is reputed to have provided a more significant service, rescuing the King from drowning when their pinnace capsized in a gust of wind on the crossing homeward from Burntisland to Leith.Thomas lived almost entirely in England. It is said that, as all the cities and counties around the Bruce country of the upper Firth of Forth had already been used for titles, Thomas wrote to friends in Scotland, and the great cathedral city of Elgin, not far from his considerable land holdings of Kinloss, was suggested. As Thomas said, “The English will be able to pronounce it!”
Contributed by Elgin Museum, now open for the season, Mon-Fri 10-5, Sat 11-4.
