As we slip into July 2012 our thoughtsmay well drift towards lazy summerdays and holidays relaxing in the sun.Spare a thought for the hundreds andthousands of people taking part in thissummer’s Olympic Games and eventslike Wimbledon where traditionally, itseems, our creator reserves for us Hismost challenging weather.Whilst the athletes and sportsmenstruggle with the conditions we can‘relax’ at our beach resort. Please enjoy your break and think ofothers less fortunate!

There is a story in the Bible whereJesus meets a woman who is collect-ing water from a well. We don’t knowher name, but as the story evolves welearn quite a lot about her. She isfrom a culture and religious back-ground which is completely alien toJesus world and she clearly has acolourful past, in fact, she is probablyvisiting the well on her own becauseno-one else wants to be seen in hercompany. However, as the conversationbetween them progresses, itbecomes obvious that she appreci-ates Jesus openness and honesty, although she might be a little scaredby the amount he seems to knowabout her. It ends with her going backto her village to invite her neighboursto “Come and see a man who has toldme everything I ever did” ( John 4 :29)In all of Jesus’ public ministry, heengages with the most unlikelypeople as a way of showing all

around him that faith has nothing todo with power or status, nothing to dowith how religious folk are, or howreligious they think they are, buteverything to do with accepting the in-vitation to “come and see”. It’s whathe says to some friends of John theBaptist who are tagging along behindhim, wanting to know more but notsure how to ask the right questions. They ask, “Where are you staying ?and Jesus replies “ Come and see”.In other words, don’t be scared, comeand ask, come and explore, comeand see for yourselves.

The faith experience is something wecan only find for ourselves and thegreat thing with Jesus is that the invi-tation is always there – “come andsee”, come and find out for your-selves. The other thing is that it is anopen invitation to anyone andeveryone. In a whole variety ofinstances, Jesus demonstrated his

love for all people by deliberatelyseeking out the stranger, the poor andvulnerable, the outcast and thoseconsidered unclean and he did it toshow that he is not just for those whothink they are right with God, but foreveryone.

A contemporary theologian describeshow the stories of Jesus inspired her.To her the stories about Jesusrevealed “an upside-down world inwhich treasure was found in the midstof darkness, in which the hungry werefilled with good things; and wherenew life was glimpsed in a humiliatedthirsty woman and a man who woulddie on a Roman cross - come and seefor yourself !

Planning IssuesTown CentreRY understood that the demolition of OldCommunity Centre/Free Church and Petrolstation site will commence on Monday 14May. Cllr Liz MacDonald commented thatthere was a delay due to turning off ofutilities. The contractors are aware of theCurtis Cup and will make the site enclosedfor the six week contract.

South NairnRY had received application for planningpermission for South Nairn, pre applicationpublic exhibition of initial proposals at NairnCommunity Centre, Wednesday 23 May, 12 to 3pm, 4.30 to 7.30pm and Thursday24 May, 12 to 3pm. RY commented that it could be feasible thatScotia Homes receive planning permissionprior to this application. NWCC had main-tained the stance, no houses without abypass. However, approx 220 homes couldbe built without bypass in place.GV pointed out that the bypass plans fromTransport Scotland did not include accessto South Nairn, so therefore, a bypassbeing in place would be irrelevant, if noaccess was to be included.

GK asked if a meeting could be arrangedwith elected Councillors to discuss how toget best for Nairn with regards planningmatters. The people of Nairn should decidewhat is going to happen in Nairn and notCouncillors from other parts of theHighlands. RY requested that at the nextjoint CC meeting that all four elected Coun-cillors attend to discuss.

GV commented on planning permission forbus station, that when one Councillorsuggested a site visit as to whether a fourstorey building should be built there, another Councillor vetoed the site visit, andthe planning permission was granted. There followed various commentsregarding the height of the building and howcomparisons had been made between busstation and police station, but planners hadfailed to take into account that the policestation is located on a hill, and a site visitwould have confirmed that.GK questioned the flats being allocated toyoung families where there was no lift. This

would be impractical, for both the elderlyand the young. RY was disappointed thatNWCC objections were not heard at themeeting though the bus station is besideNWCC area, but River CC as statutory con-sultees were heard.

There followed discussion regardingwhether in future when important planningapplications were presented and commentshad to be made within 14 days that all 3Community Councils could get togetherand discuss and vote as to how to proceed.BY felt that if 2 CC’s were in agreement, and as elected members, they would thenhold the majority vote and opinion of Nairnresidents. Councillor Macaulay felt that asa new administration was now in place theywould try to make a difference and agreedthat an opportunity for 3 CC’s and 4 Coun-cillors to get together and discuss and haveconsensus was advisable.RY concluded that all 3 CC’s are workingwell together and have four joint meetingsannually and are going in the right direction.ACTION: Chairman to set up meeting with4 Councillors and other CC’s

Sandown/Common Good FundThere was some discussion regarding de-velopment brief and the outcome of publicconsulation ‘charette’ Graham Vine reiter-ated the opinion that THC cannot really betrustees of Common Good and be theplanning authority at the same time. GVwhen attending a planning meeting andraise Common Good, those attending aretold this is about planning and nothing to dowith ownership. Planning issues are totallyseparate from ownership. The Planningbrief is about planning and Common Goodis about ownership and these are twoseparate questions.GK commented that Common Good wasleft for the good of Nairn and that themoney from this should go to the WardManager to benefit the Town.

Des Scholes mentioned that the £2.3million debt has not gone away and whatwill the new administrations attitudetowards the debt? BY felt that we have tohave more united front instead of the divideand rule, that three different voices weresending mixed messages to the adminis-

tration and that all 3 CC’s should jointogether to speak as one voice.

Any Other BusinessGK mentioned about the success of 8sheltered houses constructed in thegardens of Corsee and that the originalVictorian mansion has been put on openmarket, more likely to be purchased bydeveloper to be made into flats or demol-ished for larger block of flats.GK would like more sheltered housing bycouncil, and suggested that NWCC writeconcerns and objections for affordablehousing or buy to rent flats. ACTION: Graham Kerr to draft letter toCouncilGK also commented on the decay ofRosebank Church and whether planningpermission was still current on the churchand what was happening with it. RYcommented that it had been sold for £1. BYadded, that the Rosebank Church had beensold by the Highland Council to become aHeritage Centre. Highland Council hadfailed to place any buy back clause when ithad been sold and has been in a deterio-rating state for past twenty years or more.RY asked Cllr MacAulay to find out what ishappening with Rosebank Church andreport back to NWCCACTION: Cllr MacAulay

GK commented about Paddling Pool onlyopened for 2 months per year and thatLouise Clark had suggested turning intosoft play area. RY embraced the idea aspossible project for NWCC to become‘Jubilee Park’ but would await feedbackfrom residents as to whether this wassomething that the residents would preferto a Paddling pool.

Des Scholes informed NWCC that at RiverCC meeting there was concern over leaseto Nairn Library running out in two yearsand were writing to ALO Highlife Highlandto make a case to keep Nairn Library open.DS also commented about the Cemeteryand questioned whether THC had budgetfor new cemetery, and that RCC will writeregarding this. RY receives copies of RCCletters and will write in support.ACTION: CHAIRMAN – Support RCCregarding Library and New Cemetery

The saying goes that we are all Jock Tamson’sbairns. So, whatever differences we may haveas MSPs in different political parties in ourScots parliament - we have a common bondas fellow citizens. In fact, behind the sceneswe do, by and large, get on fairly well. There is

a fair amount of good humour in the debates, which isnecessary as some of the topics are fairly technical, not tosay dull!In an earlier debate, the First Minister gave a tribute to herMajesty the Queen on the occasion of her 60th anniversary, her diamond jubilee. Alex said that he could not reveal whathe and her majesty talked about in their meetings, "But", hesaid, “I can say without revealing state secrets that we mayhave talked about horseracing." He is a noted follower of thehorses.

So, I commend to Spotlight readers a look at the debateswhich you can see online by going to the Scottish Parliamentwebsite. Enjoy!

The Queens Diamond Jubilee has been anationwide celebration with events beingheld all over the country to celebrate 60years since Her Majesty’s coronation. Livingin the Highlands, however, the weather canoften be a source of frustration on national

holidays. This is especially true if the organisers are at-tempting to light a flame as part of the celebration.

Nonetheless, the weather has been fantastic this month andon Monday I was delighted to attend the EcumenicalDiamond Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving in St StephensChurch, followed by a special Bunkers Festival that was heldin the city centre. This was concluded by the finale showwhere the Inverness Beacon was lit above Inverness Castlefollowed by a fireworks display above Inverness Cathedral.Congratulations go to the organisers, as the event wentdown without a hitch.

Our head chef has brought together a passion for cooking and influences from around the world to create a unique and eclectic dining experience based on sharing a selection of small dishes complemented only with good wine and good company …

1 cup water

2 tbsp brown sugar

½ tsp salt

1/3 cup butter

1 cup plain white flour

2 eggs

½ tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup caster sugar

½ tsp ground cinnamon

cooking oil for deep frying

method

1. Place water, butter, salt and vanilla extract in a pan and bring to the boil.2. When boiling add sieved flour and brown sugar to the pan and stir over heat until mixture leaves the side of the pan and then leave to cool.3. Add the eggs to the cool mixture and beat well until smooth.4. Blend cinnamon and caster sugar together and leave to one side.5. Place mix in a piping bag with star nozzle, heat oil and pipe 10 cms strips into hot oil. Remove after 5 – 10 mins once they have turned brown.6. Coat in the cinnamon sugar and enjoy! They should be soft and custard like in the middle and crisp outside. For a touch of luxury we serve with Scottish berries and chocolate fondue.

Dreamingof...

Rich in history, crystal clear seas and brilliant blue skies means that Malta and her Islands have something to offer most travellers. The fact that there is so much history and so many historical sites on the Island, never fails to amaze its visitors. Small but perfectly formed, Malta is only 17 miles by 8 miles, but whether you want the rich history of the country, snorkel and dive or simply relax, Malta has it all. With summer temperatures reaching over 30 degrees and winter temperatures rarely dipping below 15 degrees, you can holiday all year round with some great long stay deals to be had in the cooler months.A highlight is the Blue Grotto which is one of the islands gems, a series of natural caves and only accessible by boat you will be taken into caves where translucent waters are truly blue, giving the grotto its name.Visit the Mosta Dome which can be seen towering over the capital city of Valletta. Built by the Knights of St John, Valletta is rich in history and architectural treasures. It also makes a great city break.Another must is Mdina (say as M-Dina). The silent city is medieval and was the former capital. A fortified relic, it is reminiscent of an era which has long since disappeared.20 Minutes by ferry is Malta’s sister island of Gozo. A typical Mediterranean island, it is a world apart from Malta. Greener and more fertile than Malta, the Gozitans live life at their own pace but now share their island with visitors to the selection of hotels from budget to luxury spa – or even a farmhouse for an authentic experience. If you can’t spare a week here try it as a two centre with Malta or it can be done in a day and use the hop on hop off bus travelling around the island or take your hire car over on the ferry !
