Is anything in this life certain?

While serving as Chaplain to theBrigade of Paras in Aldershot I wasbecoming frustrated by the number oftimes decisions would be changed.Almost every weekend on Friday wewere all on alert to go somewhere in-teresting and exciting, with the possi-bility of a parachute jump included, and by lunchtime it was all cancelled.Taking to the Air Adjutant one Friday Isaid complainingly.. “Is anything inthis world certain?” To which hereplied “Yes Padre ...its called death."Away from that dark humour I lookedfor a verse in the Bible that couldraise my spirits and I found one veryquickly... in Romans Ch 8 and verse28 . In that one verse, St Paul affirmsthe Christian experience of having di-rection and purpose in life, thanks toour faith in Jesus Christ. It reads, “ forwe know.... in all things... God workstogether for good, for those who lovethe Lord.” Can we believe that? Itsounds almost magical. It impliesthat even our biggest failures, our set-

backs in life, even our worst ill-nesses... can be used by God to bringabout a good outcome. There is much wisdom in the Bible es-pecially in the books of Proverbs andEcclesiastes, and of course in all theteachings of Jesus in the New Testa-ment Gospels. Verses like the one Ihave just mentioned can still open ourminds to God and the ways Godworks in people’s lives. Some verykeen evangelical church folk like touse Bible verses like signposts in life. But sadly and wrongly, some peopleuse Bible verses randomly and mis-guidedly, like the astrologer’s horo-scopes. There is the example of theyoung man who could not make uphis mind what to do with his life. Sohe found a pin and opened his Biblerandomly, sticking the pin into the firstverse his eye fell on. The result wasdisastrous. The first verse his pinlanded on was Matthew 27 verse 5:“And he went out and hanged him-self”. Not very inspired or guided hedid the same again, randomly select-ing a verse. The pin fell on Luke Ch

10 and verse 27.... “Go and do thoulikewise”.We should never try to make the wordof God as found in the Bible our ser-vant, nor try to interpret it randomlyfor our own purposes. There is a waythat we can gain knowledge and an-swers to all of life’s difficulties. Andthat is to read the Bible daily and sys-tematically, with help and guidancefrom the Church if necessary, so thatwe read each verse in its own con-text, with its own particular meaning.Throughout Moray, Churches and thepeople who fill them, have their doorsopen to people, like the young man inthe story, so that the word of God maycome alive in people’s lives and shinea light for their path in life. If your pathis clouded or uncertain, then do usethis resource which is free, like God’sgrace, and available to us each day.

God Bless.

Public Session: •No Police Report was given. •Following last month’s report on Water-ford Industrial Estate and the informationgiven to us by Ewan Tulloch, Cllr Ferris ex-pressed concern that there had been nocommunication with Mr Tulloch but aLocal Authority officer saw fit to submit aletter for publication in the local press. Hesaid that open letters in the paper werenot the way to carry out Local Authoritybusiness. Cllr J Mackenzie reiterated hiscomments from last month as to why thelocal businessman was being harassedby Moray Council for four vacant sites onthe estate, which he has offered to payrent for. He said that four sites were notneeded while there were fourteen vacantand available. Cllr Mackenzie was dis-gusted that the Local Authority could ig-nore travellers illegal activities but chase atax paying business. Moray Cllr Alexan-der said that he had been assured thatthe matter was being dealt with by theLegal Department but Mr Tulloch said thathe had not corresponded with Mr Burnson the matter. Moray Cllr McLean saidthat he and MSP Richard Lochhead hadvisited the Waterford Industrial Estate toacquaint themselves with the sites inquestion. The Forres Gazette reportersaid that she felt Cllr Ferris was wrongand that the Gazette legal departmentwould have advised them if the lettershould not have been published. Cllr Fer-ris said that he had not meant to suggestthe paper had erred in printing the letterbut that the Local Authority procedureswere at fault.

Secretary’s Report:-• The Secretary said during the holidayperiod there had been little mail from

Moray Council.• NHS Grampian had asked us to circu-late leaflets to extend awareness of de-tecting cancer early.• Forres in Bloom invited members of theCommunity Council to attend a buffetlunch to greet the RHS Champion ofChampions judges on Thursday 2nd Au-gust at 1pm.• A request has been made to the Com-munity Council by the organisers of an ex-hibition to celebrate the 150th anniversaryof the Dava railway line opening to seekpermission to use the Forres CommunityCouncil Crest on their publicity materialand stationery, together with that ofGrantown CC and the Highland RailwayAssociation, amongst others. After dis-cussion the members agreed to grant dis-pensation for the use of the coat of arms.• The Secretary reminded membersabout the forthcoming public exhibition ofthe proposed Energy Recovery Centre, tobe held in the Community Centre on the3rd and 4th of Aug.

Chair’s Report:-• The Chair told members that he had re-ceived a copy of the draft Wind Farm Pol-icy from Moray Council for members tostudy.• He also drew attention to a letter, copiedto him, Cllr Creswell, Angus RobertsonMP, Richard Lockhead MSP and ad-dressed to the Housing Department ofMoray Council, complaining about thesuitability of short term residents beingplaced in accommodation adjacent to eld-erly people without being checked forpossible anti social behaviour.

External Groups Report:- • Cllr Mackenzie told the meeting that the

old rent office had been open all weekshowing photos of old Forres of yester-year with many visitors and locals attend-ing. • Cllr Hayward said that an applicationhad been submitted to Planning to buildbetween 190 and 380 houses on sites onthe Grantown Road.• Cllr Ferris told members that the flag de-noting the termination of RAF Kinlosswould be being lowered next Thursday, the 26th July, to be taken over as KinlossBarracks by 39 Engineer Regiment.• Cllr Hellyer said that Army would be tak-ing over the administration of the Ospreybus from the RAF and the Board ofTrustees would be having further meet-ings. He said that with the closure of theRAF base the town had lost a lot of volun-teers.• Moray Cllr Alexander said that he hadbeen approached by a lot of people overthe proposed speed limit at the end of StLeonards Road and felt that individual ob-jections would have more effect than agroup objection from the communitycouncil.• Moray Cllr Maclean said the monthlyMoray Cllrs Surgery would be restartingnext month and would be held, as beforeon the first Monday of each month.• Moray Cllr Creswell told us that FilmForres were looking for suggestions tocreate another adult evening show, 446Sqdn ATC were looking for adult helpersand the Disabled Club were ceasing tomeet. She asked if any move had beenmade to meet Moray Council to discusthe Common Good Fund.

Parliament Blog“ ”It has been a busy summer period andit seems to have flown in! Having twogrowing boys full of energy certainly fillsup the time and it was great to get sometime away with the family. We spent a few days in Wales this year

and while the weather, like pretty much everywhere elsethis year, was a bit changeable, the Welsh welcome forneighbours from the north more than made up for it!Nearer to home I recently had the pleasure of being atthe opening of Northern Oils new headquarters at Lint-mill, near Cullen. While many businesses are still underpressure there is some confidence coming back in andNorthern Oils are really going from strength to strength.

As many of you will probably have spottedI have, in my role as the SNP’s DefenceSpokesperson, recently put forward newdefence policy proposals, which are set tobe debated later this month at the SNP’sAnnual National Conference. It has been interesting seeing the reaction

from some parts of the media who have talked about rebellionand deep splits. If we didn’t debate challenging issues therewould of course be headlines saying we weren’t prepared toface up to those challenges! At the end of the day we will have a robust debate, agree aposition with a vote and move on. We will still speak to eachother - indeed we haven’t stopped speaking to each other -and there will be other challenging issues to deal with. A goodnumber of constituents in Moray have contacted me on thisissue and I am grateful for the many considered responsescovering both sides of the debate.

This month, most gardeners will be doing their last cut of the year and putting away their mowers for the season - a pretty disappointing season in the garden too. Hopeless optimists that we are though, we will be planning a better season next year, hopefully without the damage caused by late spring snows and without the terribly wet conditions that made even getting the grass cut a struggle. We’ve had a very disrupted season, having to rearrange and redo many lawn treatments because of the poor weather.

You may wonder what a lawn treatment business does all winter; I did when I first made enquiries about buying the Green Thumb Moray Firth franchise. In fact, the off-season is our busiest time of the year as we have to pack in all the machinery jobs customers have asked us to do for them, principally aeration and scarifying. Aeration we do with a big hollow-core tining machine which, at £4,000 per machine, is not a piece of kit most weekend gardeners have in the back of the shed for occasional use. Good aeration is one of the best things you can do for a lawn. It eases compacted ground, opens up drainage and ventilation and is a major benefit in the control of moss and lichen. Forking is all very well, but some jobs are not really hand-tool jobs! We use our machines all day every day in the winter preparing the lawns for a good start next year and however you do it, it is a huge benefit.

Scarifying a lawn, on the other hand, is a job many

gardeners do themselves to remove old thatch and moss from the lawn surface at the end of the year. This is typically done either before Xmas or maybe in March, at the end of the winter (keen types might do it twice). Many folk have small electric scarifiers or rakes that work very well at removing annual moss from the surface of the lawn. A blade scarifier though, removes the thatch, which provides the habitat for moss to flourish again. We use them (obviously) for lawns with thatch, or some customers hire them and do it themselves. Either way, any gardening book or TV programme will suggest you scarify in the off-season, particularly if you are prone to moss. Both tasks are pretty dirty and physically demanding however, so best to pick a nice day! Enjoy!

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per qtr, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Cawdor and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 404774, or email us at: [email protected]

Forres (River Findhorn & Pilmuir)Flood Alleviation Scheme

Information Day

On 3 September 2012 work began on the £45 million Forres (River

Findhorn & Pilmuir) Flood Alleviation Scheme, the last of the five major

flood schemes to be built by The Moray Council and its Moray Flood

Alleviation (MFA) partner organisations.

Background

The Moray Council has worked with its MFA partners since 2000 to

develop solutions to flooding problems across the Moray area.

In the last seven years, the team has successfully completed projects at

Lhanbryde, Rothes and Chapelton Dam in Forres. The £86 million Elgin

scheme is currently well underway and is due to finish in 2015.

9am to 7pm, Tuesday 30th OctoberThe Old Tolbooth, High Street,

Forres IV36 1NX

The Forres (River Findhorn &

Pilmuir) scheme is the last in

the council’s programme of five

major flood alleviation

projects, which represent the

biggest ever investment in

flood protection in Scotland.

The Forres (River Findhorn & Pilmuir) Scheme

Although

severity of historical flood events was such that the threat

posed by the river could not be ignored. The MFA team has

worked hard for several years to develop a solution that offers

appropriate levels of flood protection in a way that is

acceptable to the public.

The scheme, which will take two-and-a-half years to

complete, will protect nearly 1000 homes and businesses

from flooding. Works will include:

Drop in to The Tollbooth on Forres High Street between 9am and 7pm on Tuesday 30 October 2012 to learn more about the scheme and find out how our work might affect you.

The Moray Flood Alleviation Team will be on hand to answer questions and listen to your views.

Dreamingof...

One of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the Travel Industry is taking a cruise. It can be described as living in a luxury hotel which moves from destination to destination and there is no need to pack or unpack your suitcases more than once!

The cruise market has seen steady growth, driven by innovation and the quality of the experience. There are large capacity increases being launched all the time, so what might have seemed like a very exclusive mode of transport historically has become much more available to the seasoned holidaymakers.

There is a perception that going on a cruise is very formal and only for the older generation, but that is changing. The average age of people going on a cruise comes down each year and ships are coming into service to cater for different needs. Some prefer to do a Fly Cruise, where you join the ship in an already exotic or interesting destination. Some prefer a Fly and Stay, where they join the ship and before or after their cruise they spend some time in that country. Some prefer to depart and return to a home port, negating the need to fly at all.

Pricing might sometimes seem high but remember that covers all your meals, entertainment and soft drinks – the only extras you are likely to run up are for alcoholic drinks and flutters on the gaming tables, if that is what takes your fancy.

Imagine spending a day in an interesting European city, retiring to the ship for dinner and a good night's sleep, then waking up in the morning in another fascinating destination. Wonderful!

The Sky’s the LimitOne of my very favourite quotes during my time here in Lossiemouth relates to the weather and its ever changing nature … “just wait a minute and it’ll change”.

Autumn skies here on the Moray Firth are particularly beautiful in my experience. Sky and cloud photogra-phy is one of my most pleasurable pastimes firstly because there are never two sunsets the same and it does change, very quickly and gives you a fresh canvass to capture.

Photographing skies during daylight is relatively simple because you have the light available to you. Remember the definition of photography is drawing with light. Photographing at dusk is very different. You don’t have as much light available to you. You can be anywhere to see and capture the perfect sunset. Now is the time of year to keep your eyes peeled. One tip I’ve learnt for capturing sunset and sky shots is always look behind you. You can look ahead trying to find your shot but don’t forget what’s going on elsewhere.

From my own personal experience try not to take your dusk sunset shot when it’s too windy. It will cause reverberation through the camera causing movement and thus blur. All modern digitals have a function where you can adjust the effects of wind but it’s not always brilliant.

I love the natural warmth and depth of a good Moray sunset. There are many layers of cloud, air and light which all contribute to your composition. You may live on the coast where you’ll have the sea and mountains

Life Through a Lensby Nicky Mack, Lossiemouth

as a point of reference or if you live closer into town, you can use silhouettes of buildings to give your shot a point of focus. If you don’t feel you are experienced enough with your camera yet to set it up for this specific type of shot, most digitals will have a Sunset setting or the like. This will automatically set light levels, depth of field etc. What is important to remember for dusk time/sunset photography is capturing the level of light available to you. One blink and the shot is lost. Therefore, you need to set your shutter speed higher. This will in turn capture the movement of the sky inhabitants against the light available to you by sucking in the light to the shot. There is a term in photography called ‘noise’. This is prevalent in dark or low light photography. This is when your shot has fuzziness which may distort your shot. This can be overcome by adjusting settings. Get comfortable with your camera. Know both of your capabilities so far and snap, snap and snap some more. You will find your own way. Before long you’ll be shifting and twiddling and clicking without thinking about it.

You can achieve some wonderful photographs through watching the sky. No painting can compare to the wonderful dramatic presence the clouds can offer in real time but a well shot photograph can come close. The camera is not as clever as the human eye. We are very fortunate to have this gift. But get intimate with your camera and keep at it and you’ll surprise yourself how close to a perfect capture you’ll come.

My own work can be found at www.vianne.co.uk, any comments would be greatly appreciated. My inspiration is merely what surrounds me, you can share that too.

“The Autumn mourns herrip'ning corn

By early Winter's ravage torn;

Across her placid, azure sky,

She sees the scowling tempest fly;…”

A few months ago I was sitting at my desk in the room at the front of the house I use as an office, when my concentration was broken by a barely audible little song. I looked around the room, there was a Robin sitting on the back of a chair a metre away. The song was repeated and I was looked at very directly. I opened the window but the robin refused to move, let alone fly out. As I went out of my office across the hall into the sitting room, the Robin followed, cocked its head on one side and repeated the song, this time sitting on the television. I knew what the Robin wanted.

To get to my office you come in the back door, through the kitchen, along the front hall and turn left. This is a route the Robin knows well and uses when the back door is open and I need “training”. Like many people, we have bird feeders in the garden and during the late Spring and early Summer they seem to be the main source of food for the local breeding House sparrows who consume nearly a kilo of food a day. Last Winter we started to feed mealworms, the Black birds and Robins really seemed to appreciate this. A couple of Robins started to watch for signs of us coming out of the house. They would make it very clear that they wanted more meal worms, and as time went on they became quite happy to eat these from the hand.

This Spring two pairs of Robins nested in the garden and our “training” was stepped up a gear, I guess by the male birds who were feeding their mates sitting on eggs. If there were no meal worms out the Robins would look directly through the window into the house, and continue to watch us until we put out more mealworms.

Back in May we spent a couple of weeks in the Cairngorms, and while we were away our neighbour checked the garden and filled the bird feeders. On returning I noticed a small pile of bird droppings on the door step. I thought this was a little odd until I surmised that a Robin had spent a lot of time sitting on the back door handle waiting for someone to come out and feed him.

Over the past months the demand from the Robins has reduced, the young have left the hedge and I assume they are looking after themselves. However, the male birds seem to be feeding the females again, perhaps they have laid more eggs. I am looking forward to my work being interrupted again in a couple of weeks and for my “training” to be resumed.

In the meantime, the local starlings have discovered the mealworms and the Blackbirds nesting in the clematis on top of our oil tank are feeding them to their young. No chance of stopping our regular mealworm order!

Briefly, and on more serious note, wild birds eat all year round and feeding them in the Winter can really help them through difficult cold spells.
