It would be true to say that, in life, we are

shaped not only by what we experience

but also by what we see and hear. The

sounds that enter our ears and the

sights that assail our eyes, words written

and spoken, are like the swirling waters

that shape the rocky coastline, like the

sandstorm that leaves its mark on the

desert boulder. We are shaped by light

and sound; our thinking, our attitudes,

our mental and emotional states – all

formed largely in the play of light and

shadow, in the cacophony of word and

song.

Words can have eternal significance.

When Jesus was at his most controver-

sial and many were turning away from

him, he asked those closest to him

whether they also wanted to leave him.

They replied, “Lord, to whom shall we

go? You have the words of eternal life.

We believe and know that you are the

Son of God” (John 6:68-69). Later on,

when Jesus was answering his disciples

questions regarding the end of the age,

he said, “Heaven and earth will pass

away but my words will never pass

away” (Matthew 24:35).

For those who knew him best, his words

had proved to be profoundly transfor-

mational. On that occasion when the

disciples saw Jesus walking on the

water, they were terrified, thinking they

had seen a ghost, but Peter’s response

was to cry out, “Lord if it’s you, tell me to

come to you on the water!” (Matthew

14:28). He knew from experience that

only Jesus’ words could enable him to

do the impossible. And when Jesus told

him to “Come”, Peter stepped right out

of the boat and walked on the water…

Such was the power of Jesus’ word - for

one who had dared to trust him.

Of course there were many others for

whom his words were less palatable.

Their hearts were closed. They didn’t

want to know the truth and, at the end of

the day, they just wanted rid of him. And

the fact of the matter is that, however

wise and authoritative (and potentially

transforming) an individual’s words may

be, unless we are open to receiving

them, they will be of no benefit to us

whatsoever.

I for one was far too caught up with my

own pursuits and pleasures to entertain

the notion that the words of Jesus might

have the power to transform my life; the

power to heal and renew; to impart joy

and peace. Partly because of all the

negative things that I’d come to

associate with that which went by the

name of “church”, and partly (I suppose)

because of my own pig-headedness, I

really wasn’t open to being challenged.

And so, for many years - and like so

many others - I kept the written record

of his life and teaching, his death and

resurrection at arm’s length – and paid a

high price for this.

Looking back, I realise that I’d been like

someone who’d been given a map

showing the location of buried treasure,

but because I’d put no confidence in

what the map revealed, I’d had to live in

poverty until I was prepared to go

“digging”. Jesus says “I have come that

they may have life and have it to the full”

(John 10:10). “Come to me, all you who

are weary and burdened and I will give

you rest” (Matthew 11:28). He went

about proclaiming the good news of

God. “The time has come” he said, “The

Kingdom of God is near. Repent and

believe the good news” (Mark 1:15).

If we take him at his word and take his

words to heart, calling upon his name in

prayer, he will renew our lives. “These

words are trustworthy and true” (Reve-

lation 21:5)

Parliament Blog & Tides

The saying goes that we are all JockTamson’s bairns. So, whatever differences wemay have as MSP’s in different politicalparties in our Scots parliament - we have acommon bond as fellow citizens. In fact, behind the scenes we do, by and large, get

on fairly well. There is a fair amount of good humour in thedebates, which is necessary as some of the topics are fairlytechnical, not to say dull!In an earlier debate, the First Minister gave a tribute to herMajesty the Queen on the occasion of her 60th anniversary, her diamond jubilee. Alex said that he could not reveal whathe and her majesty talked about in their meetings, "But", hesaid, “I can say without revealing state secrets that we mayhave talked about horseracing." He is a noted follower of thehorses.

So, I commend to Spotlight readers a look at the debateswhich you can see online by going to the Scottish Parliamentwebsite. Enjoy!

The Queens Diamond Jubilee has been a na-tionwide celebration with events being held allover the country to celebrate 60 years sinceHer Majesty’s coronation. Living in theHighlands, however, the weather can often be

a source of frustration on national holidays. This is espe-cially true if the organisers are attempting to light a flame aspart of the celebration.

Nonetheless, the weather has been fantastic this month andon Monday I was delighted to attend the EcumenicalDiamond Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving in St StephensChurch, followed by a special Bunkers Festival that was heldin the city centre. This was concluded by the finale showwhere the Inverness Beacon was lit above Inverness Castlefollowed by a fireworks display above Inverness Cathedral.Congratulations go to the organisers, as the event wentdown without a hitch.

Guide Dogs will not rest until blind and partially sighted people enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else. We provide mobility and freedom to blind and partially sighted people. We also campaign for the rights of people with visual impairment, educate the public about eye care and fund eye disease research.

Guide Dogs Scotland has training centres at Forfar, Edinburgh and Hamilton, outreach in the Highlands and Borders, fundraising branches throughout the country and over 1500 volunteers. Our training centres offer services to blind and partially sighted people and our fundraising branches are focal points in our drive to raise vital funds for Guide Dogs.

We have been expertly breeding and training guide dogs for more than 75 years, providing many thousands to blind and partially-sighted people of all ages and from all walks of life. About 200 dogs per year receive their foundation training at the Forfar training school before being moved to Instructors around the country for the dogs to be prepared specifically for the clients needs.

Every person and dog is unique, so matching a guide dog to an owner is a complex and carefully managed process. Our trainers take into account a person’s needs – walking speed, height and lifestyle – and look for a dog that will be a good match. Currently there are approximately 500 guide dog owners in Scotland.

It costs £5 per day to support each working guide dog partnership. The lifetime cost of a guide dog is around £50,000. The cost of a guide dog to its new owner is a nominal 50p, to ensure that no-one is prevented from having one by lack of funds.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

We make a lifetime commitment to provide guide dog owners with a guide dog for as long as they need one, which means a guide dog owner could have 8 or more dogs in a lifetime.

Across the UK Guide Dogs is helping over 4,800 blind or partially sighted people to get more mobile, through the guide dog service and our Vision Support Services. Our life-changing work is run entirely on voluntary donations, supported by a network of fundraising volunteers.

Last year the Inverness fundraising group raised over £17,000 through events and collections in the local area. Over £12,000 alone was raised in their popular Co-Op stall, which sells a wide range of books.

The busy fundraising group have been in Inverness for thirty years and currently raise around £800 a month for Guide Dogs through their Co-Op book stall alone – they now urgently need the support of local people to continue the bestselling initiative.

For further information on The Guide Dogs for the Blind please contact: Alis Atagan, Branch & Supporter Group Development Manager on 01463 221310.

events

The Nairnshire Farming Society is holding its’ 214th Annual Show on Saturday the 28th of July at Kinnudie Farm Auldearn. Nairn Show will have something for everyone with an

excellent and larger food fair, many good quality trade

stands, a full and varied programme of afternoon entertain-

ment and an excellent display of livestock in the cattle,

sheep and horse sections. This years’ show is shaping up to

be a very attractive and fun-filled day for all the family and

we are hoping for a bumper crowd.

Car parking is to be free this year whilst admission charges

are held at £10 per Adult, £5 per concession and secondary

school child and £1 per primary or pre-school child. Our

charges are set at a level to hopefully cover the substantial

set up costs associated with the show and also to enable

the society to make donations to local clubs and charities.

Show goers will also be treated to a varied line up of trade

stands both on the field and under canvas in the Food and

Craft Fairs which will offer all kinds of merchandise from

local produce, fancy goods to the very latest cars and

agricultural machinery. The Food Fair will be expanded

and, will again, include cookery demonstrations throughout

display of vintage tractors and

machinery. There will also be a range of catering facilities and

a licensed bar.

As ever the marquee competitions will be very competitive

and no doubt will produce a wonderful display of horticulture,

wine, honey, baking, produce and handicrafts.

Main Ring entertainment will include the Inch Perfect Motor

Cycle Display Team, Forres and District Pipe Band, Horse Show

Jumping, Vintage Tractor Parade, Livestock Parades and

children’s races. Highland Dancers, Forres Accordion and

Fiddle Club and Forres Pipers will entertain in a new covered

food court and entertainment area.

The Nairn Show website at www.nairnshow.org.uk will be

updated regularly between now and show day to give the

most up to date information regarding the show.

The day will be rounded off with a marquee dance in

the Showfield from 9pm to 1am with dancing to music by

Sticky Toffee Pudding is one of those incredibly timeless desserts. It isn’t hard to guess why this ultra-decadent dessert is a favourite on most tables. I love how easy the ingredient list is.

2oz/60g Soft Margarine

1.5oz/50g Butter

7oz/200g White Sugar

8oz/250g Plain Flour

1 tsp Baking Powder

1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda

1 Egg, whisked

6oz/185g Stoned Dates

1 tsp Vanilla Essence

2.5oz/65g Light Brown Sugar

2 tbsp Double Cream

0.5pt/250ml Boiling Water

Cream together the margarine and sugar. Sift together the flour

and baking powder. Beat the whisked egg into the creamed

mixture with a little of the flour and baking powder and continue

beating for about a minute before adding the rest of the

flour/baking powder.

Chop the dates and flour lightly. Pour the boiling water over the

dates and mix in the bicarbonate of soda and add the date

mixture to the batter and mix well.

Place in a buttered tin (or lined with baking parchment) and

bake for 40 minutes at 350F/175C/Gas Mark 4.

When the pudding is cooked, heat the brown sugar, butter and

cream and simmer gently for 3 minutes. Pour over the pudding.

Enjoy!!

Rich in history, crystal clear seas and brilliant blue skies means that Malta and her Islands have something to offer most travellers. The fact that there is so much history and so many historical sites on the Island, never fails to amaze its visitors. Small but perfectly formed, Malta is only 17 miles by 8 miles, but whether you want the rich history of the country, snorkel and dive or simply relax, Malta has it all. With summer temperatures reaching over 30 degrees and winter temperatures rarely dipping below 15 degrees, you can holiday all year round with some great long stay deals to be had in the cooler months.A highlight is the Blue Grotto which is one of the islands gems, a series of natural caves and only accessible by boat you will be taken into caves where translucent waters are truly blue, giving the grotto its name.Visit the Mosta Dome which can be seen towering over the capital city of Valletta. Built by the Knights of St John, Valletta is rich in history and architectural treasures. It also makes a great city break.Another must is Mdina (say as M-Dina). The silent city is medieval and was the former capital. A fortified relic, it is reminiscent of an era which has long since disappeared.20 Minutes by ferry is Malta’s sister island of Gozo. A typical Mediterranean island, it is a world apart from Malta. Greener and more fertile than Malta, the Gozitans live life at their own pace but now share their island with visitors to the selection of hotels from budget to luxury spa – or even a farmhouse for an authentic experience. If you can’t spare a week here try it as a two centre with Malta or it can be done in a day and use the hop on hop off bus travelling around the island or take your hire car over on the ferry !
