Gary Anderson was appointed as performance director of British Bobsleigh in the spring of 2010. The rise of the GBR 4-man to establish themselves in the Worlds Top 5 plus medals at World Junior and Olympic Youth Games has put GBR Bobsleigh in the medal zone for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in February 2014. Prior to working with British Bobsleigh, Gary was director of elite-performance responsible for the athlete management working with high performers. He was formerly the performance   manager at British Judo. He has also held posts with UK Sport.   Gary was consultant to the book "Training to Succeed" published by Franklin Watts in 2008.  He has also worked for seven  years in professional football.

Periodising the Integration of Technology to the Olympic Plan

Given the physicality of the sport of Bobsleigh the periodising of athletes training is well rehearsed, but the essential elements of the technical side of the sport also need planning, here is an insight on how that is managed in the Olympic sport of Bobsleigh - know as the "F1 on ice"

René Wormhoudt is the founding father of the Athletic Skills Model and the Athletic Skills Track. He was employed for 24 years at AFC Ajax as a strength and conditioning coach.   The ASM model has been implemented at the Ajax youth department in 2006 and has been applied since then. In 2012 he switched from the first team of Ajax to the Dutch National team (Royal Netherlands Football Association) that qualified for the Wold cup in Brazil 2014. In addition, he is an advisor and consultant for the several ASM-modules, next to the development of Athletic Skills Tracks accommodations for clubs and for public spaces.

Athletics Skills Model & Track

The Athletic Skills Model (ASM) is about wellbeing, health and optimal talent development of children, adolescents and adults. It is about the quality of the hours you practise not only the quantity.   It is evidence based upon both practical experiences and scientific findings.   The ‘digital generation’ is missing the fundamentals movement skills for both a healthy life and a sport life.  In fact, a solid base for a successful sport career is missing. ASM produces specific programs for boys and girls i.e. the ASM growth model (biological age). Other unique points of attention are the applications of motor learning strategies and transfers of learning.   The ASM will be tailor made for every sport,

Liverpool appointed Ryland Morgans as their new head of fitness and conditioning in October 2012.   The Welshman was previously at Swansea City, where he was the head of fitness and science.   Morgans has doubled as the head of fitness and science with the Wales national side under both Gary Speed and Chris Coleman.   He joined Swansea in August 2010, leaving Fulham to link up with his hometown team. Nottingham Forest and Northampton Town are also among his former clubs. His main role at Liverpool is to ensure players are physically conditioned to deal with the demands of Premier League football and are able to recover quickly between matches. This is supported by periodised and individual strength and power programmes and nutritional interventions. This all starts with his meticulous planning for a new season well in advance.

The Pursuit of Innovation in the Premier League

Many organisations spend considerable sums on collecting data of their players, but lack the capability to systematically store and analyse the data using sophist icated qual itat ive techniques, such as computational statistics and machine learning. Data gathering for the sake of it can be very futile unless it is used to drive action during the athletic process. While technology on its own cannot guarantee success, the focussing of time and effort in developing robust analytical processes has great potential. Some contemporary practitioners now have first-hand experience of how the intelligent use of ‘sports analytics’ can improve player acquisition and performance management.

Wayne graduated as a physiotherapist from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1986 and then gained a 1st Class pass in BSc (Med)(Hons) Sports Science in 1988 allowing him to proceed directly to a PhD in Exercise Physiology, this was completed in 1994.  He arrived in the UK in 2002 to work for Gloucester Rugby Football Club as Head of Medical Services to help them win the PowerGen Trophy and ended of top of the League but lost in the play-off final.   Wayne is currently in his ninth season working in the Premier League. He is also regularly invited to give annual lectures on MSc Sports & Exercise Medicine courses for UCL and Barts..

Introducing SHARP: The Sports & Health Analytics Research Partnership

Sports analytics is a rising trend. Data science and statistics have been successfully applied in various industries providing value and new insights. The benefits of data science in sports are still under-researched, but the potential gains are huge.

Analytics in High Performance Tennis – The Journey from ‘Feel’ to ‘Metrics’

2012 was arguably the most successful year for British Tennis in living memory – British players won 2 Olympic and 2 Paralympic medals, US Open Men’s Singles, Wimbledon Men’s Doubles, Australian Open Men’s Quad Doubles and a host of ATP, WTA and ITF titles. In the 6 years since publication of the Blueprint for British Tennis – high performance tennis has gone through a major transition. At the heart of this has been the application of Sports Science and the role of data and analytics with an emphasis on training specificity, athlete development and truly understanding the demands of winning major championships. The aim of this talk is to share with you the journey – organisational challenges, critical success factors and provide some ideas for how Tennis may evolve in next 6 years.

Bio-Analytics in English Professional Football

Every team wants to optimise performance and reduce the number of training days lost to illness and injury. Through a ‘Big Data’ approach I am trying to identify patterns in biological markers and training data to fulfil these stated aims. Bio analytics has to be tailored for individual athletes and to the training and playing loads that they are subjected to. I will describe how we have gone about such an approach at an English Premier League football club and how I intend in using this as part of an injury prediction model.

Richard joined Arsenal Football Club back in 2002 as website editor. He is now Managing Editor for all content across digital, television, social media, apps and print.  He began writing about Arsenal as a 10-year-old fan and turned that passion into a career as a sports journalist, working on a variety of local, regional and national newspapers before making the move into Club Media.   He has now fully accepted his lot in life as a “football geek” and has spoken extensively in Europe and the US on the subject of digital media over the past few years.

Numbers, Pictures & Words: How Analytics Can Shape Content Strategy

Being a sports editor used to be about ‘gut-feel’. When print was king, your ‘nose’ for a story had to be honed over the years and your feedback was based on readers letters pieced together with other anecdotal evidence.   Digital media has changed all that.   Google analytics has largely done away with the need for ‘gut-feel’. Twitter replies provide instant reaction to your content. Likes, shares, plays and upward pointing thumbs are the granite hard measurements of engagement.   How does this deluge of information affect content planning?

The Current Issues & Applications of Analytics in Sport

Current technological advancements allow the collection and analysis of complex datasets during sporting activities. Data related to performance on the field of play collected by means of video and/or wearable technology can provide key performance indicators in many sports and allow the development of competition strategies based on evidence. Nowadays, athletes and coaches are involved in data collection and analysis on a daily basis, however while some impact has been documented and seen in performance analysis in team and individual sports, there is still a lot to do when it comes to understanding how to prepare athletes for competition.
