Add one more to the list with Ardrey Kell High School senior soccer player Sammi Law- son. The 17 year old daughter of Bill and Liz Lawson received a quick wake-up call when she was cut from her middle school soccer team. At that point, Sammi realized that if she wanted to keep playing soccer, it was time to get serious about working hard on her skills. After three years of hard work, Sammi can now celebrate in the fact that she has earned her way onto a college soccer roster by signing an NCAA National Letter of Intent with Mars Hill College. Let’s hit the rewind button to learn a little more about Sammi Lawson and her journey to success. “I started playing soccer when I was in fifth grade. It wasn’t even my idea, one of my friends at the time wanted to play with all the boys at recess. I was reluctant at first, but quickly fell in love with the game and afterwards begged my mom to let me join an actual team.” Soccer was fun, but Sammi didn’t fully understand what it took to find success in one of the most talented areas of soccer in the country. “It wasn’t until eighth grade, when I didn’t make the middle school team, that I began to take it seriously. Not making the team made me realize that if I was going to play, I had to be fully committed to what I was doing. I made a promise to myself after that, that I would do everything I could to make the high school team the following year.” Sammi made the Knights Junior Varsity team the next two season and last year she was part of the Southwestern 4A Championship team that advanced to the Sectionals Round of the NCH- SAA State Championship. She has really enjoyed playing in the Knights program and playing with a group of very talented teammates. “Overall, playing for Ardrey Kell has allowed me to play with an extremely talented group of girls, learn and grow under great coaching, and push myself to new levels. My club experience with the Charlotte Soccer Academy U18 Predators has been the same and I’m very grateful for that.” Sammi plays the outside back or wing defender role when there are four players on the back line. “Defending is my priority, and as a player I am more defensive-minded, but with four in the back line I am allowed to make runs up the side and get a corner, a cross, and sometimes a shot. Personally, I am very vocal and I try to communicate with my teammates as much as possible. I consider it a responsibility to keep everyone on the same page.” Sammi’s development didn’t go unnoticed. She attended an ID Camp at Mars Hill last spring and began to develop a relationship with the program. She enjoyed the coaching staff and was struck by how positive the players were. “I also really enjoyed how beautiful the campus was along with the fact that Mars Hill is a Christian College. I wasn’t one hundred percent sure on my decision until I went back on my official visit. By the end of my visit I didn’t want to leave! The girls on the team acted like I was already a part of it and I just felt at home. The atmosphere at Mars Hill is extremely welcoming and I know is going to be a great experience.” See SAMMI LAWSON, Page 11 SAMMI LAWSON IS THANKFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUCCEED The South Charlotte Sports Report is proud to present our 7th Annual All Star Basketball Tournament March 8-10 at Marvin Ridge Middle School. The list of student-athletes that have found success in high school sports after a setback in middle school is quite long. Add one more to the list with Ardrey Kell High School senior soccer player Sammi Law-son. MELANIE HUSSEY SETS THE PACEWritten by Ryan Scott, Marvin Ridge High School

Being a top 10 runner in the state as well as being a straight “A” student usually doesn’t al-low for much free time. Mela-nie Hussey is okay with that because her passion is to run. Melanie, the fifteen-year-old daughter of Wendy and Rob Hussey, is a freshman at Mar-vin Ridge High School and enjoys setting the pace for her teammates and classmates. She runs both cross country and track for Marvin Ridge, but says that cross-country is probably her strength. Her strengths in school are across the board. She has started her high school career out strong with all A’s in her first semes-ter.

Running, which is now part of Melanie’s everyday life, start-ed out with just taking home a “Girls on the Run” form from school. Melanie joined the pro-gram in sixth grade and fell in love with the running aspect of it. This caused her to join the cross-country team for the fall

season and the track team for the spring season. She has been running in both sports ever since.

Melanie runs the 5K for cross-country in the fall season. For training, she runs 4-6 miles a day with other workouts mixed in. She then has meets on the weekends. Success has found Melanie over the weekends when she runs the 5K. She was named all- county, all- conference, all- region, and all- state, for finish-ing top 10 in each race. Melanie stepped up most in the State Championship when she ran a school record, 18:54 in the 5K. That placed her eighth in the state for the 3A division, but individual statistics aren’t the only things Melanie is concerned with.

“Our team is really deep with good runners. We were only allowed to bring seven runners to states, so it was very difficult to decide who was going to go. I hope that by the end of high school, our team will make it to the Nike Cross Na-tionals. They take the top two teams in multiple states. This year, we got third in North Carolina.”

In track, Melanie brings her long distance skills into play while running. She mostly runs the 1000m, but also runs the 1600m, and 3200m. She practices every day after school usually for 40- 60 minutes. Her personal best of 11:25 in the 3200m qualified her for the New Balance Indoor Nationals. That’s pretty impressive for what she considers her second-best sport.

Whether running on a trail or track, Melanie brings the same mentality to running.

“When I’m tired, I think about the outcome and how it could benefit me. I will pick someone in front of me and try to catch up to them. Then, I will try to pass the next person in front of them. If I ever see someone catching up from behind me, I try to cut them off on the next turn and surge in front. I feel like if you aren’t really tired at the end, then you didn’t try hard enough.”

Melanie has a long future in running ahead of her, but she doesn’t want to look too far ahead. She is focused on breaking the 18-minute mark in a 5K. She also notes that she wants to eventually get a scholarship to run in college.

Melanie has met the demand of running by securing all A’s in her first se-mester of high school at Marvin Ridge. She routinely comes home from track or cross-country and goes straight into homework and studying. This doesn’t produce a lot of free time, but it produces success as a student- athlete.

“I just want to thank Coach Starr because I couldn’t be as good now without his training. Also, I want to thank my teammates because we stick together and help each other. Finally, I would like to thank my parents for their support and for driving me to and from practices when need be.”

Good luck to Melanie in cross-country, track, and school. We hope you con-tinue to set the pace for the people around you both academically and athleti-cally.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH KYLE DEACON

Life’s special mo-ments takes place on a wrestling mat for Wed-dington High School se-nior Kyle Deacon. The son of Don and Mary Deacon is an all-confer-ence performer for the Warriors and was named Most Valuable Wrestler for his team last year. Kyle wrestled his way to the state championships last year and hopes to re-turn once again as a se-nior. He is working very hard on the mat to strengthen his skills for the final month of the season. As a senior leader for the Warriors, Kyle does his best to set a positive example for his teammates.

Kyle began wrestling in the sixth grade and quickly learned to love the sport. In practice, Kyle will start out with a light warm-up, then drill takedowns/de-fence/top position/ bottom position. Half way through he will wrestle live and finish with tough conditioning. Kyle started out in the 152 weight class and is now down to 138.

“Dropping to my weight class was tough but now I just have to buckle down what I eat a couple days before a match.”

Kyle say he is always thinking ahead during his wrestling matches. Wrestling can be a very mental sport and wrestlers must be able to see into the future.

“During a match I just try and plan the best way to finish the match.”Inside the classroom Kyle is a very successful student. He carries a 4.4

weighted grade point average at Weddington High School. Kyle has been ac-cepted and plans to attend North Carolina State University in the fall. The South Charlotte Sports Report wishes Kyle Deacon a successful end of the season and a great future in college.

Charlotte Catholic High School senior swimmer Ryan Hall is one of the top swimmers in the area. Ryan, the son of Peter and Jenni-fer Hall, captured the Gold Medal at the 2011 State Championship in the 200 Freestyle relay with Jonathan Peterson, Ryan Begley and Nick Andrade. Over the last few months Ryan has helped to create awareness and raise money for Nick Andrade, who was badly injured in Brazil last September, to return home for medical treat-ment. Ryan is also an excellent student with high aspirations for college. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Ryan Hall. How long have you been swimming for a team?“I have been swimming since I was 8 years old for Raintree Country Club. I learned to swim when I was about 6 years old.”

Do you also swim for a club?“I currently swim for SwimMAC Carolina. I am in the Senior 2 Group and my coach is Eric Lane. I started SwimMAC Carolina in March of 2011 and was coached by Rob Amos in the Senior 3 Group.”

What events do you swim and what are some of your top times?“I swim sprint freestyle events. My two best events are the 50 and 100 yard freestyle. My best times are 22.22 and 50.59. Off a relay I went 21.78 in the 50.”

What do you consider as your top three athletic accomplishments?“My top three athletic accomplishments are; Winning a gold medal at the 2011 State Championship in the 200 yard freestyle relay. I teamed up with Jonathan Peterson, Ryan Begley, and Nick Andrade to win the title. We also broke the school record in a time of 1:30.14. Breaking the school record again in the 200 freestyle relay at the 2012 State Championship. Getting 3rd place at the regional meet in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.50 and getting 6th place at the 2012 State Championship with a time of 22.22. I was very proud of my new best times and happy to score as many points as pos-sible for the team.”

Talk about the role you played in helping a former Charlotte Catho-lic swimmer return home for medical treatment?“My friend Nick Andrade was injured in September. His family had been asking for donations to help fly him home on an air ambulance. I donated money and went to multiple fundraisers as well as promoted awareness around my school.”

“I also sold wristbands to where the proceeds went directly to bringing Nick home.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “In the classroom I maintain a 3.6 GPA. I am taking 1 A.P. course and sev-eral honors courses. I also am involved in the German Club where I am an officer.”

What are your plans for the future?“Next year I will be attending the University of South Carolina. I am very excited to be a Gamecock. My plan is to study international business at the Moore School of Business. I also hope to swim on the team while I am there.”

“I was recruited by Lenoir-Rhyne University, Gardner-Webb University, Sewanee and Randolph Macon. I decided to go to the University of South Carolina, regardless of swimming. I know that my career will end one day and I must look into the future. I felt that South Carolina will best prepare me for what I want to do and where I want to go.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH RYAN HALL

BEYOND THE GAME WITH ADAM JOHNSON

After four years of high school, Cuthbertson senior lacrosse player Adam Johnson is ready to hit the road for college. The 17 year old son of Jeff and Tracy Johnson has enjoyed a very successful lacrosse career and also climbed to the top in the Academic Arena. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Adam Johnson to learn more.

What sports do you play and what positions do you play?“I play lacrosse and I am a midfielder”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“Starting all 4 years on Varsity at Cuthbertson High School, playing in the nation’s top tournaments this past summer and fall, and reaching goal of being recruited by college coaches.”

What is your greatest memory in lacrosse?“I would say my greatest memory in lacrosse was either beating Marvin Ridge our second year because it was the biggest upset in the state or beat-ing Weddington this past year because almost our entire team is originally from Weddington and it was the perfect way for our seniors to end their career. I have played sports for both Marvin Ridge and Weddington and have good friends on both teams. They have always been the dominant teams, so it felt good to beat them and get Cuthbertson in the picture.”

Can you share some of your statistics from the last year with me?“Last year I had 16 goals and 25 assists. Our team went 6-8.”

What club team do you play for?“I play for the Road Warriors, coached under Mark Burnam.”

Do you have college sports aspirations or what college do you want to attend for school?“So far, I have been accepted to Appalachian State University, the Univer-sity of South Carolina and to NC State University. I should hear from UNC Chapel Hill by the end of the month. I have had multiple opportunities to play in college but I have decided to focus more on my education.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I have a 4.5 GPA and have been a member of the National Honor Society for 2 years.”

What led you to choose swim-ming as your sport?“I started swimming summer league swim team in 1st grade at our pool, South Park Swim & Tennis. At first I didn’t like it but once I swam in a few meets I began getting faster. By the next season I had gotten pretty fast and the strokes came easy to me. I joined Team Charlotte Swimming and have been swimming ever since.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“I was chosen to attend NC Select Camp in 6th grade because I was one of the top 3 breaststrokers in NC in my age group at the time. It was the first really big accomplishment I had as a year round swimmer. Another

very exciting accomplishment was making the podium(top 3) at High School Regionals the last few years in both my individual events and relays. Our region has amazing swimmers and being a part of that group has been wonderful. The accomplish-ment that means the most to me was being named MVP for South Meck’s swim team my freshman year. It was both unexpected and an honor!”

Have you made any type of col-lege decision yet?“I am waiting to hear from one more school and will have to make a deci-sion soon. I most likely will either attend NC State or UNC-Chapel Hill.”

Do you also swim for a club team? “I have been a part of Team Char-lotte Swimming since I was in 5th grade. I owe so much to that team, my coaches and teammates for those 8 wonderful years. I made the dif-ficult decision to stop swimming year round a little over a month ago. I knew I did not want to swim in col-lege and was named Head Captain of the women’s swim team at South Meck. With swimming club I knew I couldn’t fully do that job unless I trained with my high school team.”

Describe your training sched-ule?“When I was training year around I swam 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. Now that I am just training with my high school team, I swim 1 hour and 15 minutes a day, 6 days a week.”

What role have your coaches played for you over the years?“I have been blessed to have amaz-ing coaches in my swimming career. Mary Sansbury and Doug Fleck at Team Charlotte and Leslie Berens and Claire Nicholls at South Meck have all given me so much and taken great care of me. I will never forget any of them!”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“Anyone who knows me knows that academics are my number one priority. I currently have a GPA of 4.83 and am in the top 3% of the senior class. I was a Junior Marshall and participate in National Honor Society, Beta Club, German Honor Society and was recently voted on by South’s Senior Class as the female “Most Dedicated Scholar”. I work very hard in the classroom and in the pool.”

As Sammi prepares for her final season with the Knights, she begins to look both ahead and behind. Sammi thinks about some of her top memories.

“Soccer has given me so many great memories, it’s hard to choose just one; but if I had to, I would choose the FCCA tournament this past fall. It was our last tournament and for most of us, our last time playing club, which got a little emotional. Even so, we really came together as a team that weekend, especially in the championship game. That game was brutal. We had already beaten the team we were playing, and they came back hard. Regardless, we pulled through and won! It was awe-some.”

In addition to finding success on the soccer field, Sammi has also worked hard inside the classroom at Ardrey Kell High School. She car-ries a 4.3 grade point average and she is on the A Honor Roll. Sammi is enrolled in Advanced Art, AP Calculus, French 4, and English 4. She is also a very talented artist and has been recognized twice with Honor-able Mention status in Scholastic Art Competition.

In closing, Sammi makes mention of how thankful she is for the op-portunity to succeed and all those that have helped her along the way.

“There is no way I could’ve gotten to where I am today without the endless support of my friends, family, and coaches. I feel so blessed to have all of them in my life and to have this opportunity. I plan to make the most out of my years at Mars Hill and can’t wait to see where it takes me.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report wants to congratulate Sammi Lawson and we wish her the very best in her pursuit of success. Sammi took advantage of a middle school setback to refocus and become the quality student-athlete she is today.
