South Charlotte Sports Report “HOMETOWN TEAMS ... HOMETOWN KIDS” Volume 7, Issue 15 November 29, 2012 - FREE www.southcharlottesports.com At six feet, eight inches tall, Weddington High School senior Alexander Plevka stands taller than most everyone else on the basketball court. The son of Steve and Sarah Jane Plevka also stands tall inside the classroom with a perfect record of A’s in every high school class. Alexander capped off his academic success record with a perfect, yes perfect, SAT score. As an inside player for the Weddington High School basketball team, Alexander is working hard to help his team achieve success this winter. He may not score the most points or grab the most re- bounds, but Alexander is determined to help his team through his leadership and commitment to do whatever he can to help the Warriors succeed. “Our goal is to win a conference championship.” As a tall ninth grader, Alexander first dunked the basketball to create a very special memory. While some players would reflect back on special games or personal achievement, Alexander says his top mem- ories come from spending time with teammates that he grew up with both inside the classroom and on the basketball court. Alexander has always brought a team-first mentality to the basketball team. “I take pride in being a team leader and bringing a good attitude daily, even when I might not start.” Being a team leader is going to be very valuable for Coach Gary Ellington this season. The Warriors have a lot of young talent and Alexander can help his teammates navigate through the season. As the basketball season progresses, Alexander will also begin to place a heavier focus on choosing the perfect school to continue his education. With his academic resume, Alexander will have the op- portunity to choose one of the very best academic institutions in the country. “I’m confident that I want to pursue an engineer- ing education in college. Specifically, I’m looking for a school that offers environmental engineering and environmental studies. My top three schools are Stanford, Princeton, and MIT.” Alexander has taken eight AP classes and over a dozen honors classes. As mentioned, he has found perfection with A’s in every class at Weddington, leading to a 4.96 grade point average. Alexander assured us he plans to continue that trend through the final semester of high school. In his spare time at school, he has served inside the Student Govern- ment Association for all four years and he is the Spanish Club Vice-President. This summer, Alex- ander attended Governor’s School for Mathematics to prepare for college. The perfect academic record hasn’t come easy, there have been many nights where he has had to make tough decisions on how to prepare for essays and tests while playing basketball for the Warriors. “There have been some nearly sleepless nights when we have away games at distant schools and I have a test or essay due the next day. It’s typically manageable though. It just involves limiting distrac- tions and making the most of my time to work.” Alexander Plevka has achieved an amazing level of success while in high school. His dedication to success has been noticed by the faculty and staff as well as his peers at Weddington. The South Char- lotte Sports Report has no doubt that Andrew will continue forward with a wonderful college experi- ence. We believe he will continue to reach for the stars and strive to reach all of his all of his academic and personal goals. Good job and good luck Alex- ander! Many people dream of traveling around the country. George Lovitt has been able to see the country through playing the game he loves, tennis. George, the fifteen- year- old son of Kevin and Clau-dine Lovitt has traveled to places like Florida, Cali-fornia, Alabama, and Hilton Head to train and play tennis. The freshman at Marvin Ridge High School also has connections to high- ranking people in the tennis community, playing in Florida at the famous IMG Academy. All his training has earned him the recruiting ranking of rd in the state and top 100 in the country. George has managed all his success to keep up in school with A’s and B’s on his report card.

George started playing tennis at age four when he first moved to Charlotte from Ohio. Originally a duel-sport athlete, George picked tennis over his

other sport, hockey, and his tennis career began to take off. George has stayed loyal to his neighborhood tennis club in Firethorne over his many years of suc-cess. He has developed a strong relationship with the club’s pro, Wade Liles, who has helped develop George into the great tennis player he is today.

“I am very grateful for everything that Wade has done for me. He has really helped me become the tennis player that I am now.”

George usually plays tennis at least two hours ev-ery day. During the school year, George often hits with a tennis player who recently played tennis for “ITF Future Pros tournaments.” When he gets the chance, George continues to train with Wade who he has known for many years. Over the summer, George travels north to Raleigh to engage in hard-core and focused training with a top-notch coach, David Marquina. The Raleigh players George trains with are very high-level tennis players and like to challenge each other to get better. George also trav-eled south to Bradenton, Florida to train at IMG Academy where he met the globally- known coach, Nick Bollettieri. Bollettieri has been responsible for developing tennis players like Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Maria Sharapova, the Williams sisters, and, of course, George Lovitt.

George has used his high amount of training to create a lot of success. He is currently ranked rd in the state for his recruiting class. George often plays in tournaments that include the top players from the region and nation. He has even won some Southern Region tournaments that have the best players in the southern part of the U.S.

“One win that stands out to me, was when I re-cently beat a guy who was ranked in the top 50 in the country. I beat him in a Southern tournament and it was a very big deal for me because I was playing in the 16’s and I just turned 15.”

George considers his forehand to be his strength,

but he says his backhand is the most consistent. He has used his forehand to hit a countless number of winners on what he calls “an inside- in” shot. This is when George runs around what should be a back-hand, and hits a forehand winner down the line. This shot is undoubtedly intimidating for George’s opponent, but George actually doesn’t see himself as a very aggressive player.

“I am trying to become more aggressive on the court, but my strategy is usually to stay consistent and force my opponent to make an error or wait for the right shot to finish the point. When I have a match point, I am very confident and try to keep all negative thoughts out of my head. I know it is impor-tant to capture the moment.”

In the future, George definitely wants to play ten-nis at a major Division 1 college, and he is open to a lot of colleges. He looks even farther and hopes to possibly become a member on the pro tour and play tennis professionally. By the end of high school, he hopes to play at Kalamazoo. This is an 18’s national tournament where the winner gets a wild card spot to play in the U.S Open.

George doesn’t let his ambitions on the tennis court affect his work in the classroom. He continues to work hard in school, balancing schoolwork with tennis travel and community service volunteering. George leads a fitness class for kids at a Title 1 school in Charlotte every Monday after school. He has also been teaching tennis to underprivileged and “at risk” youth in the community since he was 11 years old. George considers his favorite subject to be English and, like every other teenage boy, he likes to play video games in his free time.

“I’d like to thank my parents for giving me so many opportunities to play this sport that I love.”

Good luck to George as he continues his athletic and academic careers. We hope you accomplish the standards that you have achieved so far.

At first sight, there might not seem to be a lot of similarities between la-crosse and soccer. There are many different dynamics between the two sports. Lacrosse stick vs. feet. Small goal vs. big goal. Lax bro vs. footballer. Even with the obvious differences, Will Donohue found a common need in both sports, the need to score goals. Will plays both soccer and lacrosse for Charlotte Latin, and, though tradition-

ally a lacrosse player, his role in both sports is to put the ball in the back of the net. Will, the 18- year- old son of Paul and Carolyn Donohue, started up soccer last year as a junior at his school. Though he considers himself a lacrosse player, he helped Charlotte Latin reach first place in the sweet sixteen poll of Charlotte area soccer teams. He also helped Latin win the state champion-ship last year in lacrosse. His lacrosse resume has earned him a scholarship to Denison University for lacrosse. Even with the constant demand of two sports, Will still earns A’s and B’s on his report card at Charlotte Latin, which has very high standards.

“Lacrosse is usually a lot more fast- paced and physical. Soccer takes more concentration and field awareness. However, they both require a lot of ball movement.”

As a lacrosse player, Will has had tremendous success. His lacrosse ca-reer began in 6th grade when he tried it out because he thought it would be fun. In high school, he has started on Charlotte Latin’s varsity lacrosse team since he was a freshman. He plays for-ward and helped lead Charlotte Latin to a state championship last year. As for club lacrosse, Will is on Team

Carolina Elite, which is one of the best teams in the state. His team competes against other teams around the coun-try and even the continent (They will occasionally play against teams from Canada). In the spring and summer, he practices 5-6 times a week.

All his hard work paid off when Denison University offered him a spot on their lacrosse team. Will was con-templating between Denison, Navy, Kenyon, and Stevenson University. In the end, he wanted join the Big Red in the pursuit of a Division III National Title and thought that Denison was just the right fit for him.

“I really liked the school and it seemed like a good fit. It’s great at-mosphere stood out to me. I also like the lacrosse coach. I would like to get some playing time as a freshman, and eventually win a National Champion-ship because Denison has been very competitive in lacrosse.”

Though his lacrosse career has been long and lucrative, his soccer career has spanned only two years, but has yielded success. He decided to try soc-cer last year because he liked the coach who had been one of his gym teachers. It isn’t easy to suddenly take up a sport while many others have been playing

it their whole lives. Nevertheless, Will was on varsity this past season and played forward. He utilized his attack-ing mind in lacrosse to help him as a forward in soccer.

The team also finished with an im-pressive record of 15--1. Though up-set in the second round of the playoffs, Will proved that it isn’t impossible to try another sport later in your life. He went out on a limb to try it, and was rewarded with great success on the field.

“Being a lacrosse player helped me with my speed and vision of the field as a soccer player. My attacking mind-set also helped me in the transition to soccer.”

Academically, Will has kept up a pace of A’s and B’s at Charlotte Latin. Though his favorite subject in high school is Spanish, Will is going to study pre- law while at Denison. He will again balance sports and academ-ics while enjoying college life up in Ohio, where Denison is located. In his free time, Will also likes to occasion-ally hunt and fish. Congratulations to Will on his success in lacrosse, soccer, and school. We hope you continue to succeed while playing lacrosse and studying pre- law at Denison.

Academic success has always been a key component in the life of Ardrey Kell High School senior soccer player Daniel Zeitouni. The son of Ned and Fatat Zeitouni combines his passion for soccer with a burning desire to succeed in the classroom for a chance to pursue his dream of becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Daniel and what drives his passion for suc-cess.

What position do you play for the Knights Soccer team?“I play Center Midfield and Right Back on Ardrey Kell’s Varsity Soccer Team.”

What is your greatest memory in soccer?I have two greatest memories in soc-cer, my first happened last year when we drove up to Hough High School to upset the #1 ranked team in the first round of the state playoffs. It was the first time I had been to a high school playoff game and we scored a goal in the last two minutes of the game to win 2-1. The bus ride back filled was filled with laughs and emotions and it was a night I will never forget. The second happened this year when we were tied with East Meck 3-3 and I assisted the game winning goal to Mason Bass with 9 seconds left in the game. The crowd went crazy and the win clinched us a spot in the state playoffs.”

What club team do you play for?“When I’m not playing at Ardrey Kell I play club soccer at Charlotte Soccer Academy. Last year I was the start-ing Right Back on the Predator team and enjoyed a season with some very skillful players that made me a better and faster defender.”

Can you share your soccer back-ground?“I have played soccer since I was 4, starting at the YMCA and slowly working my way up to higher levels

of soccer. After the YMCA I played at Matthews and SCSA (now called CSA). After not making my middle school team at Community House I decided it was time to step it up and began to work harder which led to a big improvement in my game. I moved up to captain of the 2nd CSA team and then worked my way up to the 1st the next season.”

“Playing on the Ardrey Kell soccer team all 4 years has made my high school years much more memorable. I was one of the 4 freshmen to make the JV team my freshman year and have advanced ever since. I also have experienced different types of soccer because of my visit to Lebanon last summer, where I played with players who were on the national team. This gave me a background of a different type of soccer style and has given me a soccer mentality that gives me an advantage over other players.”

What are your college plans for next year?“Next year I plan to attend UNC Chapel Hill or Clemson University on a Premed track because of my aspi-ration to be an Orthopedic Surgeon when I grow up. Although I do not plan to play on a college team, I hope

to continue with soccer on a club team and do not plan on quitting the sport altogether any time soon.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“I put just as much work in school as I do in soccer. My schedule the last two years has been especially rigor-ous consisting of AP and Honors classes. Although soccer takes up most of my time I find time to study and participate in other extracurric-ular activities. In result, I have a 4.4 GPA and am in the National Honor Society, National Technical Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Na-tional Spanish Honors Society. I al-ways have something to do between all the activities I participate in. Last summer I spent my time practicing with the Ardrey Kell Varsity squad and working at my family restaurant Zeitouni Mediterranean Grill. I also shadowed an Orthopedic Surgeon and sponsored a blood drive in order to further my experience in the health field. Soccer has been important to me especially in the last few years, it is something I can look forward to every day and has taught me many life lessons.”

Charlotte Latin senior swimmer Michael Chadwick has his sights set on an outstanding senior season for the Hawks. The 17 year old son of David and Marilynn Chadwick hopes to repeat as a state champion in the 200IM this winter and help his team to many victories. Michael is a well-balanced young man who has dedicated much of his childhood to helping others while building his own

academic profile. Michael’s father is the Pastor at Forest Hills Church and serving the community has played a large part in the building of his basic foundation. Michael is known at Latin for being a caring, considerate and thoughtful friend. Michael is also a top-flight student-athlete and he recently committed to the University of Missouri where he will become a valuable member of the swimming team. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Michael.

What events do you participate in and which one is your favorite?“The 200 IM, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, 200 Freestyle and the 50 Freestyle. The 100 Breaststroke is my favorite.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“I won the Junior National Champi-onship 4x100 Freestyle Relay and I qualified for Junior National Cham-pionship 100 Breaststroke this past summer. I also won the 200IM in the state championship last winter.”

Talk about your recent college commitment, what led you to make the choice?

“The University of Missouri has an outstanding swimming program with top-notch facilities. The coach-ing staff, headed up by Greg Rho-denbaugh, is fantastic and the team has a family environment. Assistant Coach Mark Gangloff was a 2008 Olympic gold medalist and trained here at SwimMAC. He has always been a role model of mine. Both Coach Rhodenbaugh and Coach Gan-gloff came to Charlotte to visit with me on two separate occasions and seemed to want me the most of all the schools where I was recruited. The campus is beautiful and I felt at home when I was there!” What are your goals for the Latin team this winter?“Every year that I have swam for Latin, we have been just mere points below first place for a state title. The strengthening of our team with the new additions this year gives us a strong chance to repeat as confer-ence champions and taking home a championship.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“Latin’s rigorous academics have prepared me well for college. My intense training in swimming and

my studies take up most of my time. I am so fortunate to be going to an outstanding school like Missouri next year.”

Talk about some of your favor-ite charity work through the church? “I have worked in the inner city serving people less fortunate than I am. Serving has always been a passion of mine because I feel I can make a difference in another person’s life and how they follow Jesus. I’m very active with our youth ministry and have had the privilege to travel to several countries as part of my parents’ mission work. I have also worked as a mentor to younger kids in my church and at MAC.”

How have the last few years played into your life and pre-pared you for the future?“I have worked very hard these last several years of my life and I am very excited now that doors have opened to be a scholarship athlete in college. Missouri will be a new experience and I am eagerly antici-pating what God has in store for my life next.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH MORGAN CARLSON

With 12 years of basketball experience, Morgan Carlson is ready to be a team leader for the Cuthbertson High School Girl’s Basketball Team. The 17 year old junior is the daughter of Mark and Alison Carlson and she also brings track and field success to her athletic profile. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Morgan.

What are your top three athletic accomplish-ments?“I received All Conference Honorable Mention freshman and sophomore years. I was named the Most Improved Player my freshman year and I placed in the state cham-pionship for the 4 x 200M in track and field.”

What are your goals for the basketball season?“My goals for the season are to make it into the playoffs and be in the running for the conference championship.”

What is your favorite moment on the court?“My favorite moment on the court is definitely when the team executes a play perfectly and we score. We work so hard; it’s nice to see all of our hard work pay off.”

What will Cuthbertson have to do to win the conference this year?“To be in the running for the league title, we really need to work together and trust each others ability. Working hard on defense and hustling is key for success.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“I am in all AP and honors courses, and work really hard in the classroom. I’m an A student and participate in several clubs; Principal’s Advisory Council, Mu Alpha Theta, Biology Club, PAW Club, SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere.)

CARMEL COUGARS VOLLEYBALL IMPROVES THIS FALL

The Carmel Middle School Volleyball team has improved greatly over the 9 week season. According to Coach Nyckea Jones, “they have all grown to be smart players. We had five outstanding setters, Alex Tiddy, Erin Furney, Maddie Jena-tian, Abby Hall and Claire Green. These ladies made great decisions with the ball and were aggressive at the net. Ashley Grice, Olivia Bryant, Danielle Grotsky, Casey Watkins and Hailey Lilliott were tremendous in serve receive. They main-tained their low platform position, moved well to the ball offensively and defen-sively.”

Coach Jones adds, “ Liz Brennan and Kyra Grotsky aren’t easy to intimidate. Both Cougars play hard from beginning to end. They respond well during volleys and will do all they can to keep a ball in play. We had a great season 5-7; includ-ing wins against Southwest and Quail Hollow. We did have a close match against Alexander Graham. But our biggest win came at the end of the season against Community House (27-25, 10-25, 15-12). The girls left both their coaches speech-less. Everyone was extremely focused which minimized mistakes.”

“Our MVP was Ashley Grice, a great player in all dimensions of the game. Alex Tiddy was voted Cougar Spirit for always positive and encouraging towards her teammates, during practice and games. Last but not least, Liz Brennan was voted Most Improved for her vast growth and determination to exceed in volleyball. Great season for all Carmel Volleyball Players!”

CSL U15 TEAM WINS CARDINAL CUP IN LACROSSE

Congratulations to the CSL u15 Boys Travel Team for an outstanding Fall 2012 Travel Season. The team topped off the season winning the u15 Champi-onship at the Cardinal Cup Lacrosse Tournament (VA) on November 18th, just weeks after finishing 2nd in the HS-JV Championship of the Palmetto Classic in Charleston, SC on Nov 4th. This weekend was a well-deserved Champion-ship for a team that had to overcome adversity and find ways to turn role-play-ers into leaders.

The fall started with a disappointing 3rd place finish at the VanLax Tour-nament. While the roster was thin and missing players due to injuries, football games and kids playing with school teams in this local event, the key factor was that the team took their foot off the gas pedal and overlooked some talent-ed competition that they had handily beaten earlier. From this point forward, the team only lost one game the remainder of the fall season.

During the month of October, the roster returned to fighting strength and the team focused simply on “Playing as a team and doing all of the little things right”. In the Palmetto Classic our CSL u15 Team (consisting of 8th & 9th graders), proved that it could handle older high school competition as they went into the Championship game undefeated as the #1 seed. After beating a very good Team Carolina team, 7-4 Sunday morning, the squad faced them again in the Championship only to lose 6-4 in a hard fought battle that could have gone either way.

To finish the Fall, the team went undefeated in the Cardinal Cup beat-ing travel teams from across the Carolinas and Virginia. The boys learned from their earlier experiences, followed a simple game plan and absolutely dominated in Virginia, demonstrating an outstanding offensive transition game supported by an impenetrable defense. Each game, a new leader would emerge and other teams had no idea who to focus on or where the next strike was coming from, because they were not playing against a few all-stars, but an entire team.

This final weekend in Virginia outlined what happens when players, coach-es and families all share a common vision... it is not about the Championship, it is about what we all learn trying to get there. The Fall CSL u15 Team was successful, not for its wins, but because they fought for one simple motto... family.

Coach Ken Fasnaro said, “In a lacrosse world over-run with club teams that are built around “all-stars” and hand-picking the best athlete for the moment, CSL has stuck to its motto of taking players that are not only talented athletes & lax players, but more importantly... kids who are coachable, disciplined, hard-workers and most of all, who want to be a part of a team and a family. The CSL does what coaches are supposed to do... We develop them into great lacrosse players on the field and great leaders off the field.”

The CSL Fall u15 Team consisted of 18 players, each of them different in many ways who came together as leaders from Weddington, Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, Fort Mill, Nations Ford, Butler & Charlotte Catholic. In the Spring they may be rivals, but for the rest of the year, they are family.

Playing basketball is a way of life for Marvin Ridge High School senior Alyssa Horan. The 17 year old daughter of Kevin and Kyla Horan plays shooting guard and small forward for the Mavericks. She has played the sports since she was five and now she is ready to cap off her prep career with a successful season on the hardwood. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Alyssa to learn more.

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“One of my top athletic experiences was being undefeated in basketball and winning confer-ence my 8th grade year at Charlotte Christian. Another experience was getting the game winning basket during AAU State finals which enabled my team to go on to nationals. Being

a captain of the Marvin Ridge basketball team as a senior is an incredible honor and one of my top athletic experiences.”

What are your team goals for the season?“My team’s goal for the upcoming season is to be competitive with every game. Our ultimate desire is winning the conference. We will need to give 100% in each and every practice and game in order to represent our school proudly and be successful.”

What is your favorite moment on a basketball court?“My absolute favorite moment on the court occurred last year. The last regu-lar season game was against Weddington, who is our biggest rival. It was the best defensive game I had ever played. We shut down their best player and ultimately got a Maverick’s victory. Playing in this rival game on my birthday made it my favorite basketball moment.”

What will the Mavericks have to do to compete for a conference title this year?“With the huge loss of valuable players last year, every game this year will be a battle. It will be imperative that the team plays as a cohesive unit to com-pensate for the new players and lack of height. There will be no easy games, and everyone on the team will have to step up.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“I have had academic success in high school while taking multiple AP and honors classes. I currently have a 4.5 GPA and keep myself very busy with ex-tracurricular activities. I am presently an active member of Student Council and an officer of First Priority (Christian club offered at Marvin). I also am involved in Young Life at my school. I am a member of the National Honors Society and National English Honors Society.”
