Welcome to the 10th edition of the UK’s finest BMX mail-order catalogue. This is our biggest catalogue yet at 92 pages and has more products and content than ever. Inside you can find out what us and our team have been up to for the past year as well as browse all the latest and best BMX products available.

Our pro team have been travelling all over the world living the awesome pro lifestyle whilst our local team have been killing the parks and streets of Hastings as well as going on the odd trip whenever they can - often in-between working here in our shop/skatepark or packing orders. We’ve been busy filming this all year and have chosen the best of it all to go on our 10 year mix tape DVD - currently shipping with all orders whilst stocks last.

We first thought of the idea of opening a BMX shop around Christmas 2002 and opened our tiny outlet on March 10th 2003. It’s amazing that 10 years later, we’re sitting here late at night laying out a catalogue just like we always have. It’s been so much fun, and hard work, growing our little business out of our lifelong hobby and it’s a pleasure to still be here doing what we love.

Seeing as it’s been 10 years we took the opportunity to work with some of our favourite brands to create an exclusive range of collab products - see this issue for information on the products available and a chance to win a package of all of them. We have also put together a short history of our business in this issue with a more in-depth history on our website if you’re interested in where we came from. We hope you enjoy this issue...

INTRODUCTIONRichard and Marc were born in 1981 and 1984 respectively and started racing at their local BMX track in Bexhill in1988 (home to the backyard jams). Their parents took them racing for Bexhill Burners all over the region and eventually the world.

By 1998 Marc was ranked No.3 in the world for his age and Rich was a photographer and writer for BMX magazines and organisations. In 2001 Marc spent a summer working for his sponsor, Profile, building hubs and wheels in their Florida factory in between riding for them around the U.S.

Meanwhile Rich was paying for a business degree by working for several BMX magazines and companies. Growing up in the home of BMX, Bexhill and Hastings, exposed them to some of the worlds most influential BMX spots, contests and riders at a time when BMX was finding its way.

They used this experience and lifelong friendships forged in BMX to start a business; a business they live for today. This is the story of the first 10 years of The Source.

Being the tenth catalogue and also being in our tenth year it seemed logical to create a history of Sourcebmx. The following pages will take you through the history of the Source from our humble beginnings in 2003 to the present day - living and

breathing BMX every step of the way.

THE HISTORY OF SOURCEBMX2003-PRESENT DAY

The Source opened its doors on March 8th 2003 following a chat over Christmas dinner a few months before. With Marc not enjoying college and Rich with spare time as a student at Loughborough, their Dad suggested they put their passion for BMX to good use and open a BMX shop in Bexhill. The idea soon got moving and after several meetings in the Castle (pub) later, The Source was born. With £5000 in savings and a tiny shop at the top of a side street in Bexhill we set about laying out the best specialist BMX shop we could; one of only a handful in the UK. A few weeks of hard work and 18-hour days left The Source as a shining new store full of the latest BMX bikes and parts.

Local legend Keith Duly was persuaded to ‘break the chain’ and the local scene of 30 or so riders poured in to check out the latest magazines, talk shop and get their hands on the latest parts. Our first sale was a new wheel to a 13 year old Josh Heritage; now one of our team riders

As part of the small local scene and with such a niche market, it was our job to grow the scene in order to make the business viable. As local riders, this came naturally and we threw ourselves in to Sidley Woods, Bexhill track, local skatepark extensions and promoting riding locally as much as possible. In Summer 2004, we managed to persuade Eastpak to bring their ramp, punk bands and team down for the day

and that Summer we turned our attention to Sidley Woods trails...

...Growing up in and around the BMX scene in Bexhill inevitably lead to hanging out in Sidley Woods at the trails. Many days spent digging when we should have been a school was the norm. In 2004 we tried our best to throw a jam at the trails but as usual with these things it rained

hard.

In fact we are still doing the same things now; Marc, together with the other locals. have finally made the trails offiicial and have a lease from the council for the trails as well as a fence and have made the whole place official. Yes Sidley Woods is now official - it only took 20 plus

years

OUR FIRST WEBSITE OCTOBER 2004 With the local scene growing and riders travelling to Bexhill from all

around, the Source set out to expand and stand on its own two feet. Stock holdings increased hugely with a wide range of clothing and

shoes and some adverts were placed in BMX magazines. Rich began working full-time with Marc after graduating in 2004 and The Source

set out to shake up the market with innovations like a free T-shirt with every order, bikes shipped pre-assembled and a free wheel

building service using the skills Marc had learned from his time in the U.S.

In late 2003, plans began for a website. At the time, websites were

not a big deal and nobody really did ‘online shopping’ so it wasn’t an obvious move. Chris Merry, a friend who was studying computer programming at college, was recruited to build the site for £300. It

was one of the first e-commerce BMX websites around, looked a treat and meant that www.sourcebmx.com was born!

By 2005, it was obvious that our bedroom-sized shop was too small for all of our stock so we signed a lease for a store around the corner on the high street called St Leonards Road. It was 4 times bigger and had room out the back for a very shady mini-ramp that the neighbours hated!

The shop fit predictably led to a few all nighters with everyone from the local scene we could muster and was opened by the local Mayor; along with a fine cast of super heroes for no reason that anyone can remember.

Sorry no photos of the mini ramp survive that we know of. However to give you an idea it was squeezed into a damp yard out the back and one side was made from a shady old shop counter we had. Despite that Mike Ardelean and Cory Martinez sessioned it once.

By 2006, we were trading at lots of BMX events around the UK and quickly establishing our mail-order service as being the best around.

We realised early on that we needed excellent systems and high-levels of stock to be a player so we invested everything we had in both. We

also took advantage of deals where we could; including a Sunday morning hungover call to our supplier to purchase 1600 pairs of

cut-price Orchid BMX Shoes. We underestimated the consequence of storing 8 transit vans full of shoes but it built our reputation and

customer database nicely. By now Ricky was our part-time mechanic and Wildcat had joined us full-time; and is now our sales manager.

It was at this time that we noticed that none of the established BMX mail order companies had a catalogue so we worked our arses off, day

and night, to make one. The catalogue was a hit and has since more than doubled in size to the one you hold in your hands at 92 pages.

We have mailed out over a quarter of a million free catalogues in the first 9 issues and the sleepless nights working to a deadline have just

got worse!

SOURCE MOVES TO HASTINGS OCTOBER 2006 By now, we were doing a daily collection from our suppliers in

Hastings and had rented a separate warehouse, complete with sloping floor and leaking roof, nearby to store stock.

With more of our customers travelling from Hastings it made sense to make the move over. In late 2006 we had lived through a third

horrific shop-fitting ordeal and opened the doors to shop number 3 on Hastings High Street.

The shop looked awesome but we’d outgrown it almost instantly

From day one we had supported local riders but by 2005 we officially had a team of local shredders; Fids, Marc Goodwin, Caleb Kilby, Carl King, Josh Heritage, Mark Tanner and Jamie Lusted.

We went on loads of trips and got filming whenever we could with the goal of making a BMX video. Local film-maker and skater Tom Pickard took it upon himself to take over filming and editing and thanks to him we got it finished.

On Halloween 2007, Deal With It was premiered to a packed out Brass Monkey in Hastings...

By summer 2008 the shop was far too small and the days of sharing a single desk with two other people whilst someone else packed orders

in the tiny basement office had to end.

Fortunately, Rich stumbled across an old Church for rent near Hastings station and hours later him and Marc were walking around

planning where the ramps were going. It was a dream come true; a place big enough for a shop, office, warehouse and an indoor bowl.

It wasn’t easy to secure the lease but with references from every agency and school we’d worked with and a solid business plan, we

were given a 10 year lease from the church. We spent a solid 6 weeks renovating an entire 4000ft church whilst trying to deal with the

Christmas rush, our 5th catalogue deadline and an all new website. It nearly killed us but friendships were made that will last forever

as friends, family and team riders pitched in to get it done on a shoestring budget. We swore it would be our final shop move and we

still can’t imagine a better place to call home!!

After making Deal With It, going on trips and filming never stopped; in fact it got more frequent. So by 2008 we had enough footage for a second DVD. Pickard worked every hour under the sun to get it finished in time for a second Halloween fancy dress premiere and another legendary night went down.

The video premiere was also the night we announced we were moving again to a larger premises in Hastings...

The shop opened on December 6th 2008 but the skatepark took a little longer with nominated carpenters/ramp builders Ben Newbold and Tom Quinn working evenings and all of us helping them out after work and at weekends. Armed with a copy of Thrasher Ramp building book and plenty of enthusiasm, we set about making an awesome bowl.

The maiden session was in February 2009 and made the ordeal of the previous few months all worthwhile – you can’t beat riding a ramp that you’ve put your heart and soul in to.

Despite now needing a separate backup warehouse, Trinity Hall is still home for us with the biggest stocks and the only indoor bowl in the south east. It’s been regularly ridden by some of the best riders in the world and can be rented for a nominal fee by riders.(to find out how to hire the bowl see page 81).

Our third BMX DVD, Normal, was released in 2011 featuring the ever-evolving team of riders plus most of the original crew. Mag scared the hell out of everyone by breaking his back whilst riding but made a full recovery and took the end section again; complete with the cringe-inducing crash.

Trips continued to take us all over Europe, normally plagued by a van breaking down, passports lost or non-stop rain. It can feel like Source trips are cursed sometimes.

Whilst up on the office roof trying to fix yet another source shop leak, Marc spotted a straight line through the bushes and shed and in to the garden of the house next door where he lives. Sheds and walls came down, dirt was excavated and the garden ramps were born.

A set of private wooden trails that are not for the feint hearted have become the fair-weather hangout of the source staff and team riders. The Garden has been added and added to over the past year until there is seemingly no more room left. Although there has been a suggestion of a corkcrew transfer lip to be built on the side of the house and already dubbed the Cobra line. Expect that Spring 2014.

THE SOURCE GARDENSUMMER 2011 TO SPRING 2012


Ride Magazine launched a reader survey in 2011 and on an arguably memorable night in London – depending on whose memory – Source BMX was awarded the national BMX retailer of the year award with almost 25% of the vote; more than second and third combined. It was a humbling experience that was a reward for all the hard work put in by the team over a long time.

The award was repeated in December 2012 and led to yet more magazine coverage and another dirty hangover. As an added bonus, our team riders won 2 of the 3 rider awards.

As a national mail-order company, it made sense to support some of the best pros in the UK as well as our local team. We were honoured that Matt Priest, Kriss Kyle and Ben Lewis all came on board our team and put out some of the best video content we’ve ever produced.

Always ones for a party and to throw a local comp it made sense to celebrate 10 years in business. The De La Warr Pavilion, as the centrepiece of Bexhill beach and a stones throw from where we started, was an obvious choice for a venue. We didn’t know it until it was suggested to us at a meeting about constructing a ramp on the roof as part of an exhibition. So what would have been a low-key party for the extended Source family turned in to a public event in a town synonymous with BMX. If you are relatively new to BMX and are looking to get yourself a new BMX bike then these following four pages will guide you through the process and tell you everything you need to know about BMX bikes so you can make an informed decision and get the right bike for you. Below is a standard BMX bike broken up into component form so you know the pros and cons of each part and on the following pages are our very own recommendations of bikes to suit all budgets…

1.The Frame. All bikes start with the frame. Entry to intermediate level bikes use hi-tensile steel tubing but look for 4130 cromoly for increased durability and less weight on higher level bikes. See the guide below for sizing info.

2.Forks. The same principle as the frame with regards to material. Look for CNC’d steerer tubes for greater durability and tapered legs for weight savings and a cleaner look.

3.Handlebars, or just ‘bars’. Same principal for materials – 4130 is best and multi-butted tubing saves even more weight. The size is a personal preference with ‘rise’ referring to how high they are.

4.Headset. There are 2 types. Aheadsets are the older type with external cups whilst integrated headsets have sealed bearings that sit inside the frame itself. Integrated headsets save weight, look better and last longer.

5.Brakes. Some riders use them and some don’t. If you’re new to BMX or live on top of a hill then use a back brake! All of our complete bikes are sold with brakes whilst higher-end bikes come with removable brakes that can easily be removed/installed.

6.Front Hub. Look for sealed bearings here; they’ll last longer.

7.Rear Hub. There are two main types. A freewheel hub (13 tooth or larger) and the

more reliable and responsive cassette hub. Cassette hubs come with smaller gearings (typically 9t) and are found on most decent bikes these days. Semi-sealed cassette hubs are good whilst sealed is better and a branded after-market hub even better still.

8. Gearing. The relation between the front and rear freewheel or cassette hub. The smaller the sprockets are, the more weight is saved and the more clearance there is when riding ramps or grinding. A 25-9t is considered the best on complete bikes.

We are pleased to announce that we are now offering our bike in a box service free of charge on all BMX bikes. This means that you don’t have to waste time building your new bike up when it arrives or even lug it back from a shop. Your bike would have been 99% assembled by one of our qualified mechanics and shipped to you in one of our custom bike boxes - this popular service used to be chargeable but is now free of charge. You even get a text and email giving you a 1-hour timeslot for delivery!

Once you receive your bike all you will have to do is locate the parts box containing your pedals and free tool kit. Screw your pedals into the cranks and tighten with the wrench provided. Then all that is left to do is turn the bars straight so they are in line with the front wheel and tighten the pinch bolts on the side of the stem with the 6mm allen key provided. All the time consuming and fiddly stuff like brakes, headsets and bearings are done for you so you should be out on your bike within five minutes flat.

9.Rims. The outside of the wheel. These come in single or double wall versions. Double wall is strongest and is more important on the rear which takes more abuse than the front.

10.Tyres. Usually wider on the front than on the back though many bikes now come with a fat rear tyre also. Branded after-market tyres are best here.

11.Cranks and BB. Cranks take a lot of abuse on a bike and need to be

strong enough to match your level of riding. Tubular cranks are best whilst branded cranks are better still.

There are 3 types of Bottom Bracket (BB). U.S are the largest and normally come with unsealed bearings. Smaller Mid or Spanish BB’s are usually sealed and a result last longer and require minimal maintenance.

12. Pedals. Most bikes come with plastic pedals now; branded versions tend to be the best. Alloy pedals last longer and grip

better but hurt your shins more when your slip and also usually weigh more.

13. Seats. There are 3 types of seat. Railed or combo seats are found on the entry level bikes whilst pivitol seats are found on intermediate to pro bikes. Pivitol seats are easier to install/adjust and save weight.

14. Stem. The bit that holds your bars to the forks. All stems are comparable in strength but CNC’d versions are lighter and offer a much cleaner look.

If you have been riding for a while and you are looking for a new bike then the suggestions in this section will give you a brief overview of what you can get for your budget at the moment and what to look out for. Similarly if you are new to this then have a look at the previous pages, if you haven’t already, to familiarise yourself with all the ins and outs of a BMX bike. Here at Sourcebmx we are a 100% rider-owned

and run BMX shop and pride ourselves on offering friendly and honest advice to make sure that you ride away on a bike that’s suitable for you and will keep you in BMX for the long run. We don’t stock any brands we don’t believe in and every single bike we stock is a great bike in its own right - this section is here to help you make an informed decision. BMX BIKE BUYERS GUIDE

Entry level bikes are designed to be your first BMX bike or your first “proper bmx bike” and are typically suited to all types of riding. Chances are if you’re in the market for an entry level bike, you are new to this and you can find the choice a little overwhelming. Firstly the best thing to remember is that we don’t stock any “bad bikes” so you just need to find something to suit your needs.

So with that said; if you are just starting out and want to go to your local skatepark to give it a go then something from the cheaper end of this price bracket will be perfect (like something from the Jet BMX range; or the Verde A.V - above left). If you are little more advanced, i.e have ridden before and plan to hit the skatepark up every night, then you might benefit from the improved spec and strength you can find on the higher level bikes in this range (Like the United KL40 left).

A good thing to remember is that whatever bike you end up starting on, all of our bikes are fully upgradeable with the after-market parts you can find in this catalogue.

Youth bikes are the bikes which are sized smaller than the regular BMX bike to suit the smaller rider. Although these bikes are largely spec’d to entry level specification (see below) there are some youth bikes which vary in spec and price which will suit a wide range of rider

abilities; all with one thing in common - their size. The standard size of a BMX wheel is 20” but these youth sized bikes typically use a 16” or a 18” wheel as well as a smaller frame - this makes for a BMX bike geometry and feel only in a smaller package. As a general rule a 16” or 18” bike typically suits a rider from 6 years old up to 10 years but Cult also make a

much smaller 12” bike for the real little guys. Also fresh for 2014 United have released their RNJR bike which is a 20” wheeled bike but made with a smaller frame and tweaked geometry which makes for a perfect stop gap between the 18” bikes and full size 20” bikes.

YOUTH BIKES

ENTRY BIKES (FROM £200 to £350)

CULT CC12 £374.99 Lightweight 12” wheeled bmx bike from Cult. Cult have their juvenile range to feel just like a BMX, only smaller and lighter thanks to the aluminium frame. Suitable for riders up to 3ft. Also available in16” & 18” versions.

Mid level bikes cover quite a broad price range and basically apply to all models which are not an entry bike and equally not quite a pro bike but fall somewhere in-between. These are the models which are made to accommodate the needs of most of today’s riders, whether it be their second bike, having moved up from

the entry level range or even their 3rd or 4th bike. These bikes are built with many of the same features as Pro bikes, like integrated head tubes, Cr-mo tubes, sealed bearings and removable brakes but are still produced to accommodate the rider with a budget. These models usually feature some after-market parts, a pro rider endorsement and can be tailored to specific types of riding with

specific geometry or a parts package to suit street riding for instance. These models provide a higher quality of bike, usually lighter and always stronger to hold up to the constant and progressive riding day in and day out. Perfect just as they are or great as a platform to start your own custom from, customising parts as you progress.

If you are looking at investing in a BMX for something over the £500 mark then chances are you have been riding for a while and you know what you want and need a bike which can keep up with your level of riding. Bikes at the lower end of this price bracket like the Fit 2 and 3 series, United Pro Series, Verde Radia or Luxe and Trust or Envy from WTP all offer great value for money and are great quality bikes in their own right. They also offer a great platform from which to upgrade your ride as your level of riding increases. FEATURED FRAMES

The frame is the most important part of any bike and the most influential component to how your bike feels and performs. When you are asked what bike you have, you will reply with the make and model of your frame. So what are the differences in these seemingly similar looking frames? First of all; after-market frames are constructed from a higher grade of materials and use more advanced manufacturing processes from the frames which can be found on complete bikes (with a few of the pro level bikes excluded). This is not to say that the frames on complete bikes are bad - it is just that aftermarket frames have been made to such a high spec with advanced materials and processes like butted tubing, invest cast areas and heat treatments that they squeeze the last drop of performance out of the metal they are made from. There are subtle differences too in the geometry of these after-market frames which

make them suit different types of riding more than other frames. First of all the top tube length needs to be to your liking and indeed suit your height, for example a 20.5” top tube length is about the middle ground - with the longer ones being more stable and shorter ones being more twitchy. The same goes for the rear end length or chain stay length - if you go fast and jump big things you probably want some more length here than a technical street rider. There are many things which affect the way a frame rides which we have covered to your right in the geometry section. Below you will find the frames we think are amongst the best right now along with explanations on why the geometry and construction will suit a particular type of riding. FRAME BUYERS GUIDE

TT – The length of the Top Tube is what all BMX bikes and frames are measured by. A longer top tube will make the handling of the bike more stable and give the taller rider more room. A shorter top tube will make the bike more responsive.

CS. Chain Stay is essentially the length of the rear end of the bike. A shorter CS length will make the bike more responsive and a longer one more stable.

HT. Head Tube angle determines the angle of your forks. A steeper HT (i.e. 75°) will make the bike turn quicker than a mellower angle (i.e.74°).

ST. Seat Tube angles don’t vary too much (around 71°) and affect the centre of gravity. The steeper the angle the shorter your bike will feel.

SO. StandOver height is essentially how high your frame is. A frame with a low standover height is more responsive and easier to ‘throw around’ whilst a high SO height is more stable; particularly useful when going fast.

Despite appearing to be all the same, BMX handlebars come in a variety of different sizes with small variations in geometry, feel and construction. With the current trend of handlebars getting bigger a rise of 8.25” to 9” is around the average. However with more and more choice of sizes and shapes on the market you really can experiment and find what works best for you. As a

rough guide; street riders will prefer a slightly smaller, narrower bar than a trails rider for instance as it gives more clearance for barspin tricks etc but there are many top pros and riders which turn this theory on its head. Ultimately it is down to your personal preference. Check out the diagrams below to familiarise yourself with angles and measurements of a BMX bar.

A. Rise. This is the height of the handlebars. This measure-ment is taken from the middle of the clamping area to the middle of the grip area. B. Up sweep. The angle of which the bars bend upward on the grip area of the bars with 0° being flat.C. Width. This is measured in a straight line from the end of each side of the handlebar in inches. D. Back sweep. The angle which the grip area of the bars bend back towards the rider. Typically somewere around 12° is normal, The lesser the degree the straighter the sweep.

Ordering a custom wheel from Sourcebmx is easy and usually won’t cost you any more than it would to order a pre-built BMX wheel thanks to our FREE wheel-build when you buy the hub, rim and spokes at the same time. On this page you can find some examples of our most popular custom builds wheels which are also available as a product in their own right on our website. That said the beauty of custom wheels is the ability to choose exactly what you want, so why not have a look on the following pages and pick your own custom wheel.

To order a custom wheel all you have to do is select your preferred hub, rim and spokes from our huge range and then we will custom build your wheel for you and dispatch it to you with our next day timed-delivery courier; all this typically takes less than a week from when you order a custom wheel to when it is on your bike. We also throw in the spare spokes from your order, a free Sourcebmx rim tape and a handy care guide so that you can maintain your wheel and have them last as long as possible.

We initially moved to our old church in Hastings because the building was big enough, and with high enough ceilings, to have our very own indoor skatepark. Our bowl is super fast and has been ridden by some of the best riders in the world over the years; and been sessioned by everyone that works here and rides for us on an almost daily basis.

As well as riding it ourselves, and using it as a makeshift photo studio for all the product images in this catalogue, we offer it out for private hire. For just £20 you can have the

park to yourselves for 2 hours - we often have groups of friends hire it out for a party or just a part of a days riding in Hastings. We made some improvements to the bowl section last winter so it’s even more fun to ride - check out the video on our website and our DVD to see our team riding it.

To book, simply give us a call to check availability and book in.

Our only retail store is situated in a converted church in hastings town centre and is the biggest in the UK. We’re open 7 days a week and offer all the same deals in store that we do on our website - and the same riders that man our phone lines work in our shop so you can rely on the best advice available.

We’re located right on the edge of Hastings town centre with plenty of free parking outside; a lot of our customers make a day of it with a short walk to the town and the beach. We’re also right next to Hastings train station - you can literally roll here from the entrance.

How to order You can order on our website at www.sourcebmx.com or by calling our mail-

order hotlines that are staffed by riders. We accept payment by all major debit/credit cards including VISA, Mastercard, Solo, Electron and Amex.

We also accept payment via Paypal on our website. You can also buy in our Hastings retail store - situated in an old Hastings church at the address below.

DeliveryWe send all larger items (that don’t fit in an A4 jiffy bag) via a next working

day courier service. Our courier emails you a one-hour time slot on the morning of your delivery so you don’t have to wait in all day. Smaller items

are sent 1st class via Royal Mail. UK delivery charges range from £3.50 to a maximum of £5.75 and are calculated automatically on our website. Delivery

to the rest of the EU is a maximum of £10.00.

Stock We hold the biggest stocks in Europe of quality BMX bikes and parts and have deliveries of fresh stock daily. If you visit our website you can view exactly

what we have in stock or if it’s out, a date when it is due back in.

ReturnsWe will refund or exchange any unused and unwanted product within 30 days

of purchase without argument. Please see our website for our full returns policy and any exclusions.

DepositsWe will gladly reserve products with a 10% deposit for up to 60 days (excludes

some sale products). Please call if you would like to pay a deposit.
