A✿✿ A different kind of coAting

This refers to the wool coatings that we have at the end of this issue as the catalogues are presently in alphabetical order. A bit of a pain really but if you don’t want wool then these really are super quality fabrics that are made to look like wool. They are now reduced from £10 per metre.a) Vader - This is 60” wide reversible poly/viscose “melton” cloth, jacket/light coating weight which is black on one side and black with a fairly subdued check in burgundy on the other side. The check is made up of broad bands and fine lines which meld well into the black background but not so well that you can’t see it. It will be an excellent wearing cloth and fairly warm because of the brushed finish that it has. A very smart and cosy fabric. b) Navy Melton - A poly/viscose “Melton” coat fabric in navy blue. Not for the purist but a great cloth.

✿✿ AnoUkHere was have a fabulous fabric that I think will go with a lot of stuff and feel fabulous to wear. It is a peach finished viscose lycra jersey fabric in a colourful abstract print.

60” (152 cm) wide poly/cotton/lycra jersey fabric in a pattern which can be used horizontally or vertically. Sombre maybe but full of class.

✿✿ ArMAdATwo navy blue 60% wool, 40% polyester suitings with differences in weaves.a) A flat crépe weave. b) A superfine almost herringbone weave but it isn’t.In old fashioned money, they’re probably 7 to 8 oz cloths so they have substance without being too heavy.

B✿✿ BAGS OF BiTS

We have four bags of bits and pieces of all manor of cloths. Sample strips, short ends, nothing really to make garments from but ideal for craft work, practice etc. There is a lot in a bag and to be fair we can only really allow one per customer and it is first come first served. They are heavy so qualify for postage on their own. In other words they cost us more than £5.95 to post so if you want other fabrics we will have to charge twice for postage if we can’t get all the fabrics in the one parcel for the weight limit.

What happens next?I’m speaking to you now before the Olympics has even started so far in advance to we begin catalogue proceedings. I have to start this little missive well in advance of anything I suppose, because I have to do things as they occur to me and whilst that ought to be in some sort of chronological order, it seldom isn’t because I have a tendency to forget what I have been talking about the day before. The Open Championship will have been and gone, the Test series against South Africa, the last banking crisis will be I think of the future, since what has gone on will go on and indeed probably has to go on otherwise what would Radio 4 and the Today programme do? It is quite remarkable, this thing to John Humphries and James Naughtie and I am just thinking what they would have been like if they had been in charge of men working on a shop floor.Here within the confines of Stalag Croft we managed to keep our heads above water (no pun intended) and thankfully Caroline has been able to

get hold of some absolutely wonderful cloths for the coming autumn and winter, although it’s doubtful that we shall get an autumn and winter. Why should we when we didn’t get a spring or a summer. We have had the odd barbecue throughout the lighter nights; the last one, a family affair, resulted in everyone, bar me, eating inside and I stoked up the Webber with as much fuel as I could and sat in a tiny corner huddled eating my blackened sausages, my granddaughter, aged 4, wondering what this extra layer of dark stuff was. My golf season is coming to a close in a flurry of disappointments which I put down to a lack of practice due to the inclement weather. It has got nothing to do with the passing of time, you understand. Anyway if we don’t get a move on, you are not going to know about these cloths so I am going to go with the heavy stuff first.

✿✿ BATTLeSHiPFinely woven polyester, with a synthetic rubber coating. It is completely waterproof. I can’t believe it’s entirely breathable; however it is in a fulsome battleship grey colour.

✿✿ BedFORd CORdA cotton Bedford cord in a dark sage/olive green. Another cloth with a fairly fine weave with a lot of substance, drapes well and wears like a trooper. Perfect for trousers, skirts and jackets.

✿✿ BeLLAStriking rose print on lovely cotton poplin fabric ina) White – Pink roses on a white ground and b) Black – Pink roses on a black ground.


✿✿ BLACK On BLACKPolyester viscose fabric in black with a secondary sort of pattern woven into it, giving a little bit of a light quilted appearance. The design is an all-over one; it’s in lots of little small shapes that don’t mean anything but as you walk away from the fabric you can discern some sort of faint check pattern over all. Lovely cloth for a jacket.


✿✿ BOLOTTeHow do they do that is a question that, sadly, I am unable to answer. This is a 60” (152 cm) wide black polyester dress fabric with a fine horizontal pin stripe design in white and then comes the clever bit. What they have done is to crease the cloth in a fairly random fashion so the fabric appears to have a deeper black, random fine embroidered, rope-like pattern. It’s a permanent feature of the cloth and it won’t come out and the effect is quite astonishing. It has a soft finish.


✿✿ BOUndLeSS diSAPPOinTMenTOver the last 12 months we have had the rich orangey gold velvet made by the best makers in Europe. It was made into long evening sort of skirts but don’t get biased. It is a cloth that can be worn in smaller waistcoat garments or indeed some Grayson Perry type fit outfit. Fabulously made expensive cloth but because you haven’t bought it, it is sitting here looking at me. Let’s see if you can be persuaded at £3.50 per metre. Why not make curtains and put it with some funky wallpaper?

✿✿ BOUnTiFUL

This is a 60” wide viscose lycra fabric. A nice quality that won’t crease and is very drapey and comfy. Pretty small floral pattern in lovely soft tones.a) Damson - ground with coordinating flowers. b) Slate - ground with coordinating flowers.

✿✿ B.P.M.Cream cotton muslin with a tiny all over but fairly sparse floral print, in pink, blue, mustard and green. I am not sure why it is made as it is, perhaps it was a trial to see what it looked like, anyway it doesn’t work all that well, but it is a pretty fabric and if you want something different to make a kitchen or bathroom curtain this is your man. On the other hand if you are quite prepared to wear a liberty bodice it will make a lovely blouse.

c) Bull Durham – even stronger unbleached twill with all the necessary bits of naturalness.


✿✿ Bzz

60in wide polyester voile blouse fabric in black with 5mm wide white and gold horizontal stripes. Looks a little bit like an anaemic bee; perhaps more black than a bee but when you’re in a jam keep going. Wonderfully floaty.


C✿✿ CAnvAS

This is a rather splendid cotton canvas in a sort of dark khaki which has been dyed a shade of dark chocolate brown on the other, suggesting that it might have been made for garments to be made reversible. A strong fabric, but not too heavy.

✿✿ COALiTiOnWell we’re getting along very nicely without money, aren’t we? Best to not go down that road, eh? This cloth is another 60” wide poly wool suiting in a medium to dark grey, light weight, summer weight even, in a very fine hopsack weave.


✿✿ COnUndRUMThis 54” (137 cm) wide black and white fabric has just taken me for a bit of a tata. I couldn’t believe it was cotton, but it is, with a hint of lycra, I thought from the feel of it that it was bound to be synthetic, but the fact is, the finish absolutely delightful. The cloth is of a medium suiting weight and whilst I think you might look a bit of a twerp in a suit made out of it, a jacket with black trousers or a white skirt will look stunning. The design is of squiggly all over concentric circles of varying sizes and these are white on a black background. I think this is rather special.


✿✿ CORdUROyWe do have quite a wonderful selection of corduroys, all cotton corduroys and as you are probably aware not much is made in this country these days and generally not readily available. However this arrived here from a maker in a far of land having imported it or have had it sent there to be made up but then he went bump and the cloth was then brought back here. What a tangle web we weave. Anyway I will go through them in order of thickness of cord, also known as the number of wales per inch.16 Whale a) Black needlecord8 Whale b) A wonderful deep plumy/ rusty red c) A dark brown which has a silvery top to the raised portion of the cord. d) A minky silvery grey e) A pale silvery beige6 Whale f) A very dark brown g) A very pale lime green. It is pale, from a distance it’s almost a stony colour but close up it has a hint of lime in it.

✿✿ COSSACK60in wide fairly lightweight cotton and linen blouse fabric. Blouses because it reminds me of Cossack dancers in their baggy sleeve shirts. It comes, it has to be said, in a fairly dirty cream and it has a worn creased finish before you start to wear it and crease it. The permanent finish has a kind of sheen. A very casual cloth

✿✿ CORLeOneCotton velvet fabric, in black with a fine white stripe at 1” (2.54 cm) intervals running down the cloth. Fairly substantial without being too heavy and has a slight sheen to the finish. You could look very dapper in a suit made from this. You could also make some plush curtains and cushions too.

These three 56” (142 cm) wide printed cotton poplin dress fabrics with the same floral design in the following colourways. As the name suggests this is very similar to something you would find in Cath Kidson. Perfect for craft projects and little girls dresses.a) Pale blue with blue, white and green b) Pale pink with darker pink, white and green c) Pale yellow with rust, mustard and white.An easy repeat, fairly small design. £6.95 per metre.


✿✿ CROUCHinG TiGeRImagine if you will hiding in the undergrowth waiting to frighten a tiger to death, you can see him he can’t see you. Why can’t he see you? Because you have made a cat suit from this incredible stretch velvet. The reason for its incredibility is that it has been dyed in a brown, almost tiny ocelot pattern, which has in it a very, very faint check. From where I am standing it looks like camouflage. Very light, it doesn’t behave just like any old velvet, this is special.

✿✿ CRUiSe TiMeNana B has made this into some very trendy printed trousers for her cruise. She is very excited as she doesn’t get away much and she’s off to somewhere she has wanted to go for years. They look great, comfy and are fab to pack. Soft finished viscose in deminy pale blues with an all-over floral print in lots of pretty colours. Easy-care, wash and wear.


D✿✿ diAMOndS On THe SOLeS OF HeR SHOeS

A “creased” and braided taffeta in a dark pink created by using black and pink yarns, in addition within the embroidery there is a smattering of lurex “diamonds”. A lot of work has gone into this quite dazzling cloth.


✿✿ diSH dASHIn the last catalogue and on the web we had a polyester cloth called Just Cause with the same pattern but this is 100% cotton. A beautiful white lawn base with an all over red wire netting gone mad print made up of thousands of abstract lines.

✿✿ dO THey KnOw iTS CHRiSTMASA fairly simple plaid design in beige with the plaid weave in dark green outlined in red, just the right colours for Christmas; a throw perhaps. It wasn’t designed as a Christmas fabric, it is a ladies suiting made from poly/viscose, it has a beautiful hand.

✿✿ dReAMinG in CHOCOLATeIf you have a bit of a thing about chocolate, particularly dark, bitter chocolate such as only seems to be made in Continental Europe but you would rather wear it than eat it, then these two quite wonderful cloths are for you.a) On the Other Hand - A superfine worsted wool (70%) and polyester (28%) with 2% lycra suiting in a toning, but not matching colour, if anything this is a slightly more bitter chocolate colour than the moleskin. Because of what it is made of, it is quite light, virtually un-creaseable, and is, possibly by the time you read this, as fashionable a colour as you are going to get for whichever season you are getting ready for. £10.00 per metre.

b) Wild Montana Sky - A very fine 60” (152 cm) wide moleskin, which is actually a fairly good quality cotton chino, that has been brushed but brushed more than you would get in a shirting, hence the fine moleskin. It has the hand of soft velvet and if you had a remnant and stuffed it full of old stockings, you’d have something to cuddle whilst watching television. You wouldn’t of course do this whilst anyone else was in the room, lest they thought you were a bit less than a full shilling.

E✿✿ eL SUPReMO

Fantastic shirting made for Paul Smith, beautifully fine cotton lawn in a woven windowpane style check. There are many aspects of the weave making up the check. The base cloth is white and it comes in two colour ways on the white basea) Green and blue b) Black and rust


F✿✿ federer

60in (152 cm) wide 80% cotton, 20% linen ivory fabric in a suiting weight with weave interest akin to that of a linen. This is not a soft fabric and has crisp feel to it.It would be good for structured clothing and could even be used for tablecloths.


✿✿ floAterS

60in wide viscose dress fabric in black upon which are printed lots of amorphous shapes in every colour of the rainbow but not bright colours. The reds lean towards pink the greens are muted there is lilac and a bit of purple, some turquoise, a deepish orange and a muted orange. They all blend and intermingle. To me it’s like looking into an aquarium filled with the nicest fish on the planet. It captures the light beautifully and drapes well. A bit of a gem.


✿✿ forSootHWe’ve got a little collection of tweeds, fine tweeds, woven on very old looms. I’d like to think that they were hand looms but I don’t think they are. The cloth is only 1mtr (39”) wide, in fact it’s not quite that wide. It has a little bit of a rough hand to it, not a lot, but it is not a silky cloth, in the way that a modern worsted wool cloth is. They are genuine tweeds woven with different coloured yarns. Some new colours added.b) Moss c) Beige d) Woodland blue e) Tobacco f) Leaf Green g) Natural Grey h) RustThese are narrow and they have a bit of history and they are nicely made. £7.00 per metre, which if you double it up to £14.00 for a wider cloth you will not get a better cloth for anything like that kind of money, no matter where you go. Trust me I’m a cloth salesman.


G✿✿ GinGHAM (1 in)

1 in (2.5 cm) corded edged gingham, poly/cottona) Emerald Green b) Pale Blue c) Dark Blue d) Red


✿✿ GinGHAM eXTRA Red non-corded gingham on the web – invisible 59” (150 cm) wide cotton rich poly/cotton gingham in a slightly larger check than usual, but only slightly and is heavier. We only have red and white at the moment.


✿✿ GLUTen FRee60in wide cream fine cotton lawn with a washed finished. In this case it appears to have been brought about by not calendaring the cloth when it is being dried. A very dense cloth with a lovely soft satin hand.


✿✿ GUineASoft viscose dress fabric in black with a swirly spot design in white. Looks like a tail feather of a large bird!

60” (152 cm) wide polyester ball gown fabric in black with some built in stiffening and a lustre.


✿✿ HATHAwAyA pure cotton Oxford shirting in white. Very much the sort of thing that used to be made in this mill but sadly this wasn’t. A quite substantial cloth with a lovely hand.


✿✿ Hi HO60” (152cm) wide poly/cotton/lycra shirting in white with a fine shiny silver lurex stripe at one inch (2.54 cm) intervals.


I✿✿ iTALiAn PRinTS

A little collection of silky soft, fine cotton Italian lawns, light as a feather with lots of lovely colour. They are expensive for two reasons, they cost a lot, well I suppose that is the only reason so forget the second! They cost more because they are Italian but the designs say as much and are special. We haven’t much of any.


J✿✿ JAM JAR

Can you remember when there were glasses that looked like jam jar bottoms, by the very nature of things they had to be in a heavy frame otherwise they would have tipped off your nose. I don’t think they are made anymore with the advances in technology. Well I have a cloth before me, an almost 60” wide woven polyester with a slightly aged finished, i.e. it has lots of little wrinkles in it brought about via a mechanical process in the finishing. This adds interest as well as softness. The cloth is fairly substantial and is in a very, very pale gold upon which are printed flowers and shapes, which remind me of looking through a jam jar. It comes in muted tones of turquoise, taupe, a bit of lilac, a tiny hint of mustard and several shades of dusky to dark pink.

Kids Flannel

A double brushed cotton flannel, double brushed because it’s been brushed both sides and I don’t think it needs to be said but for it to happen it has to be a good cloth otherwise you finish up with a lot of holes. What comes next might not please everyone, because it comes in either:a) a pink baby print or b) a pale blue baby print.If you don’t want to use it for little ‘uns, use it yourself. There is nothing wrong with a pair of pyjamas made out of wonderful flannelette, possibly the equal of what Lancashire used to make.


Patchwork

Cotton children’s fabric in a design made up of squares and oblongs, made to represent a patchwork. It is of course printed.a) Basically pinks, turquoise with other contrasting and toning colours. b) Basically pale blue and pale lime green with toning colours.In the midst of these squares and oblongs are flowers and little animals doing various things from cycling to making sand castles and daisy chains. All-in-all a children’s fabric and very, very pretty. The cloth itself is good quality and it is well finished and well printed.

Ouch Cotton canvas fabric with printed nursery design ina) blue or b) pink.Jenson c) White cotton canvas fabric with a colourful racing car theme print.

REF: MY48 ALL 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ kASpArofA lovely cloth made of wool, polyester, acrylic and for some reason a little bit of silk, tweed like jacketing. It is a large check about 2” (5 cm) square. The yarns used are black, 60in wide wool mixture black and white fabric where the black and white yarns are intermingled with each other forming one lot of squares in the pattern and then there are pure black squares in between. It’s not too dense a fabric and therefore isn’t heavy but looks quite chunky. I recall padded shoulder jackets from this kind of cloth.


✿✿ knit-WitThis is a little collection, I was about to say, of fabrics that are either knitted or look as though they have been knitted. Basically all of the heavier weight variety although really still quite light but in some instances they are quite thick without having a lot of body. I’ll do each one individually so you will know what I am talking about.a) Loopy Green – A wonderful wool mix boucle in lots of autumnal blues, greens and browns with a hint of gold in some of the boucle loops. 54” (137 cm) wideb) Loopy Red – Another wonderful wool mix boucle in lots of autumnal rusts, tans and browns with a hint of gold in some of the boucle loops. 54” (137 cm) wide. Picture on back page.c) Nanook – Is a bit of a Nanook of the North looking fabric; looks a lot, lot thicker than it actually is although it is quite densely woven ‘knit’ and this is in greys, cream, taupe, mushroom and beige in a fairly random – it would actually be, if it were a very plain fabric, it would actually be a stripe. Of course it is made of chunky yarns with lumps and goodness knows what and it doesn’t look a bit like that at all. I know exactly the sort of thing that gets me out of this but perhaps I’m failing in my responsibilities conveying to you. Wonderful cloth. 60” (152 cm) wide. Picture on back page.d) Lilac Woollen Jersey – Is a very straight forward dark lilac woollen jersey. I suppose it could be loosely described as a light coat weight but more a heavy dress weight. Gorgeous colour, lots of interest in the surface of the cloth so it isn’t just flat and this too is one of those things you don’t come across every day. 54” (137 cm) wide. Picture on back page.e) Black Woollen Jersey – Is a similar cloth to d) but this time a little lighter and quite a bit wider at 64” (162 cm).

L✿✿ LOnG dePLeTed

Last year we had a fabric like this but it was in a damson colour, this year we have it in a fabulous darkish blue with a hint of lilac. It is a polyester taffeta which has been pleated in a not too straight forward way. The pleats are approximately 1cm and run from selvedge to selvedge.


✿✿ LiMPOPOCaroline has decided to photograph this cloth, with good reason, so if you have the internet you will see what I am about to try to describe. A viscose lycra jersey, a white background with a big palm branch like print in many shades of brown with purple and turquoise thrown in as a contrast. On the mannequin it looks absolutely stunning. Not for all ages, but then again why not.

60” (152 cm) wide mildly stretch lace fabric in ivory. Traditional floral pattern.


M✿✿ MOLeSKin

Two very heavy and absolutely stunning, non-repeatable British moleskins.a) Pale grey b) It says it is dark brown but there is a mixture of opinion here as to whether it should be a very dark grey but they’ll do as they’re told. It is a dark brown but a brown unlike maybe ever seen before.

56” (142 cm) wide, vividly red, rigid polyester lace. Rigid in that it doesn’t stretch, well it gives a little but it doesn’t stretch. It is in a small floral design. In the modern idiom ’it’s well good for Christmas’. It wouldn’t have done for Mary Portas but then again who makes their own knickers.


✿✿ ROSe And HUBBLe

60” wide beautiful lawn cloths on which are printed some old Rose and Hubble designs. Produced in the same mill they have been made as a sop to those who want Liberty tana lawns but don’t want to pay the price. This cloth is as good so what do we have:a) Aurelie b) Gigi c) Maribel


✿✿ RUnninG SCARedThere are those for whom polyester is an anathema. But if are not one of those this cloth might be use. Jet black, quite heavy jersey, leaning towards a Ponte Roma sort of cloth or old-fashioned sort of crimplene but not as coarse as that. This is fine, it’s soft, it’s silky, it stretches and it is the sort of thing that people make jogging pants out of or even floppy shorts or to take it to its ultimate extent, trousers and dresses. Versatile eh? Great cloth, wash ‘n wear, doesn’t crease but not cotton.


✿✿ RUSH OF BLOOdPeach’ finish woven polyester dress fabric in a fairly manic gamut of colour in an abstract design. Colours involved are purple black, soft orange, cerise and white.

✿✿ THe SPiCe OF LiFeA plain weave, the checks are in shades and tones of cream, green and mustard with fine line over-checks in all these colours plus a pale blue.A poly/wool fabric made entirely in Yorkshire, with a lovely silky soft but still firm hand.

✿✿ THe Undyed60” (152 cm) wide finished but not dyed ‘velvet’. Made from 98% cotton, 2% lycra is isn’t a velvet in the curtain velvet sense, more of an old fashioned fustian. I’m sure you can dye it but it doesn’t wash well. Dry cleaning makes it even better. So if you want a very, very good cotton cloth in almost its natural state, this is a corker. It has a fault (intermittent) funning through it. Hence the £2.00 per metre.

✿✿ THRee Men in A BOAT Sadly this is another fabric that we have not been able to persuade you of its wonderful virtues, we did get a lot of it so maybe that is why it is still before me. 40% poly/60% wool gabardine in a stripe design and in three colourways.a) In blue/grey/beige. b) In slate/dark turquoise/green. c) In sand/browny beige/pinky beige.The stripes are about 1” (2.5 cm) wide, interspersed with border stripes in contrasting but complementary colours. A lovely light summer blazer cloth.


✿✿ TROPiCAL60” (152 cm) wide 60% wool, 40% polyester in a very fine hopsack weave, the sort of weight that those who used to go on the Grand Tour would have had when they reached warmer climes. Virtually crease proof, drapes absolutely beautifully and in a delicious shade of a tanny brown.


✿✿ TRy MeA 60” (152 cm) wide polyester ‘denim ‘look fabric made up of blue and white yarns. It is a twill weave but it is obviously not denim as this has a shiny silky look to it just to add to the confusion. It is an expensive looking fabric and it doesn’t crease, so could make perfect slouchy elegant looking pants for your hols. We only have a tiny bit of it.


U✿✿ UnCHAined MeLOdy

The same fabric as we have had before but now we are on the last roll we have a fault that is so hard to explain and almost unnoticeable that I won’t bother. If you are gathering it you won’t notice it, you can also cut round it. Hence it is now £3.50. This is a pure cotton voile, in white with a variety of different ‘chain’ stripes down the cloth. The stripes themselves are about ½” (1.3 cm) to 1” (2.5 cm) apart, so there’s lots of intricacy in the weave. It is beautiful which can’t be said of the song that Jimmy Young used to sing. Well the song was alright.

✿✿ vivienneWide furnishing fabric and by furnishing I meant curtaining or light upholstery. Made by a company called Brown and Rowan, a firm I have no personal experience or axe to grind but I suspect they are an old established company and indeed this cloth is an old established design called Florence Court. From my point of view it is a Regency cloth and for those who want to be a bit avant garde, you could make wonderful garments from this. The cloth itself has a lovely finish and has a pattern repeat of 26” or 66 cm whichever comes first. It comes in muted tones of blues, turquoise, peach, beige, mustard; there are rows of flowers and what looks to be something like a head piece with flowers coming out of it in between which are stripes, not obvious stripes but nevertheless stripes. If I feel to be fairly new at this description, it is because I am but it will adorn furniture and curtains for an older home.


W✿✿ wAFFLe

Waffle weave cotton rich poly/cotton shirting in white. Heavy enough, because of the weave, to make shorts or perhaps trousers from a blast from the past.


✿✿ wHen ALL AROUnd – iTS BLUeYou will recall in the last catalogue, or you may not recall, so I will remind you that in that there was a fabric called, When all around, it came in cream and we sold out. Good news, we now have the same fabric in blue, a mid ocean blue. The cloth is 100% cotton with lots of wonderful delicate intricacies in the weave from tiny stripes to little open basket weave stripes.The overall effect is a little bit seer suckered. It is not a seersucker because it hasn’t been treated in any way. Very refreshing and beautifully soft.


✿✿ wHiTe MiSCHieFBeautifully made fine cotton crépe in off-white. Soft as the proverbial. Gorgeous.


✿✿ wiLL O’THe wiSPWool/acrylic/polyester lightweight open knit dress/sweater cloth in a black, cream and grey horizontal stripe. The cloth has then been brushed and also has zillions of gold lurex sparkly bits. £5.00 per metre.


✿✿ wOOL COATinGa) Black Watch - A 60” (152 cm) wide two-sided woollen coating. One the one hand it is plain navy; on the other side it is navy and green ‘Black Watch’ tartan plaid weave.b) Bright Spell - A 60” (152 cm) wide flannel wool coatings in a melange of many greens, producing a dark lime colour. Is this a cause for excitement or what? Beautiful cloth. Picture on cover.c) Orange Flannel – the same cloth as above but in bright Orange.d) Camel - A 60” (152 cm) wide, absolutely fabulous camel wool/nylon/cashmere coating. No certain of the exact percentages but they are likely to be 80% wool, 10% nylon and 10% cashmere. I know people tend not to go for overcoats these days, but people who want to be dressed nicely for their daily sojourn wears suits and in winter they wear an overcoat and you will not do better than this cloth wherever you go for the rest of your life. As the title suggests it is in a camel colour. £20.00 per metre. Now don’t fall over - the wholesale price is almost twice that.e) Dandy - 60” (152cm) wide, Suitably recovered I move on to a brown wool cloth coating weight which is in a herringbone weave on one side (a faint but wide herringbone weave) and on the reverse a plain but beautifully marl finished brown with other tones mixed in. This is in fact two cloths woven together. As clever as it comes and beautifully soft and just as expensive as the others.f) Grey - A 60” (152 cm) wide pure new wool, medium weight flannel, definitely a coating weight but of a completely different character to the previous cloths just described. Another drop dead gorgeous cloth and there is a small amount of a very similar woollen cloth in either navy blue or a dark, heathery infused brown.g) Chequers - This is the last cloth for the moment in this particular conversation. A light fawn and camel oblong check on the one side with a brushed camel plain finish on the other. It has all been too much for me. Fabulous cloth. Picture on back page.I think it’s fair to say that there will not be a repeat as these cloths have been made in this country. What comes from abroad now I am not certain of but I do know that these mills are no longer in existence. So if you want to preserve a bit of history, do your bit.


✿✿ wAiSTCOAT & wAT nOTWe have had these for some time under many different guises; the names can confuse us as much as you but the last was a duplicated name so caused no end of bother, hence a new name. These 60” (152cm) wide cloths did arrive from a maker of fine gentlemen’s suitings and because they aren’t suitings I assumed they were linings. Not necessarily. Some were used for waistcoats, others for the backs of waistcoats and – wait for it – travelling dressing gowns and of course exceptional linings. They would make the perfect linings for the wool coatings above to make an exceptionally expensive looking coat.a) Exceptionally dark brown satin with fine triple pinstripe at 1” (2.5cm) intervals.b) Plain black taffeta with a dark brown reverse. This is made from black and brown yarns, not piece dyed. It is also quite substantial.c) Dark brown with triple woven raised stripe in pale brown tonesd) Black and brown fine stripe in dull satine) French Navy with a textured weave patternf) Black Satin Stripe, not even stripes, small then big to create an optical effect.
