Village Weekend reapsgrand rewards

This year’s Village Weekend was another splendid success. Despite the odd downpour moistening passengers on the tractor ride, and the occasional gust of wind threatening to relocate proceedings to Barton Bendish (or thereabouts), all the events passed off smoothly and enjoyably.

An added benefit from all this year’s activities is a profit of approximately £1,000. Of this, £500 is being donated to the Daniel Everett Mobility Fund. Village organisations requiring financial support from the remaining £500 are invited to apply in writing, outlining their need to the Village Weekend Committee (c/o the Old Rampant Horse, The Green) by 31st October 2004.

How does your garden grow?Once again there will be a Shouldham Open Gardens day in summer 2005. If you would like to be involved in organising the day and/or are prepared to open your garden, please contact Jan (347919) or Jenny (347420).

Photograph & Craft Exhibition

It is hoped to hold a Photograph & Craft Exhibition in the Village Hall on Sunday 21st November. So if you have any photographs of village events, old and new, views of the village, the school, the football club etc, please can we borrow them to display?

Also, we hope to exhibit crafts, either just for show or to buy. So we want paintings, woodwork, embroidery – in fact any kind of craft. We will take great care of all your items. Proceeds for Village Hall funds. Please ring Jenny Malby on 347420.

Bright sparks neededfor Village Weekend

CommitteeThe continued success of village activities is dependent upon both the support of villagers and the energy and enthusiasm of the organising committee. Hence we are looking for new members and fresh ideas to help maintain the impetus. Committee meetings are informal and friendly, and occur about six to eight times per year. They are held in the convivial surroundings of the King’s Arms.

Why not come along to the next get-together on Tuesday 16th November for a short meeting at 7.30pm followed by the annual pub supper (partners invited). If you’d like more information, please ring 347919.

Kicking off the new seasonShouldham Football Club is fielding four sides this year: U8, U9, U11 and U12. We welcome any new players at all age groups, with girls being allowed to play at league level until the end of primary school. Games are played locally.

Could any parent who wants to get involved please contact the club. Committee members are also needed. Information about the club can be found on our website: www.shouldhamfc.com.

Finally a plea from Shouldham FC to all dog lovers. While it is nice to see dogs running around, it is not nice to have to pick up the doggy mess from the pitches. Unfortunately we are having to do this on a regular basis.

Racing certaintyAnxious owners, inveterate gamblers and enthusiastic connoisseurs of chicken suppers all descended on the Bowls Club the other Saturday for ‘A Night at the Races’.

True to form, the race-card contained a compendium of village events, mishaps, characters and curiosities, all wrapped up in a horse’s name. Race No.2, the Ghetto Gallop, was especially fiercely contested, with Sulkey Susan sprinting home ahead of the rather gloomy Wet Harvest, both out of the Hipperson stable.

The event is a major fundraiser for both the Village Weekend and Shouldham Youth Club. Thanks go to all the organisers and to those who helped with the food and ran the Tote through the evening. In particular, Keith Matthews with his spanking new spreadsheet shone as the bookmaker. A new career, perhaps…

Many thanks from the Village Weekend Committee and Shouldham Youth Club for the massive £725 raised at this very popular event.

All Saints’ ChurchFlower Festival

This event, held over the August Bank Holiday, was again a great success despite the variable weather. The ‘TV Favourites’ theme allowed our local flower arrangers to exercise their skills and imagination to the fullest extent, and the church was a blaze of colour. Our sincere thanks to all the arrangers, helpers, and – above all – those who visited and made the festival another memorable event. It raised just over £1,500 in aid of church funds, for which All Saints’ PCC is extremely grateful.
