A sporting chanceCalling all athletes (?) from Shouldham and beyond! This year’s Village Weekend event on Saturday 9th July will include an inter-village sports competition and we need teams to compete for the brand new Challenge Cup.

Each team should consist of between three and five people, aged 13 and over (and no shirking for the over 40s!), up to a maximum of eight teams. During the afternoon, teams will compete in six events to be selected from the following:

• Fancy dress egg and spoon race (bring your wellies!)• Dizzy pole relay• Sack race• Plank race• Three-legged welly race• Blindfold wheelbarrow race• Tug of war• Greasy pole pillow fight.

Contact either Helen (347970/ [email protected]) or Sarah (347457/ [email protected]) with team name and participants. Closing date 5th July. Sarah and Helen are also keen to get their hands on any old clothing for the fancy dress race – especially hats and dresses!

The Village Weekend fete and sports day will also include a family dog show, live music from Revival (ranging from 1960s to skiffle), a raptor (bird of prey) demonstration, stalls, a grand raffle, a children’s entertainer, a junior football competition, a barbecue and all-day bar and much much more. The day will conclude in the time-honoured way with a dance and barbecue with live music at Pearce’s Barn. Don’t miss it!

Dancing all the way to the bankThe sponsored line dance and karaoke evening by the Shouldham Lady Line Dancers raised the sum of £931.82. We would like to thank all our sponsors for the wonderful support they gave us.

Wheels meet again!Blessed with good weather, this year’s annual sponsored bike ride looks set to be a record-breaker. Around 50 intrepid cyclists left the Green at 11am on May 1st, destined for a trip of some 26 miles, happening upon the odd hostelry along the way.

There had been a spectacular thunderstorm and cloud burst early that morning, which left many of the track-ways muddy and interesting. Apologies to the pub landlords who found that they could view lumps of the West Norfolk countryside at rather too close a quarter after we’d departed.

At lunch we were once again treated to a grand barbecue at the White Hart, Foulden – thanks to the labours of Geoff Hipperson and his merry band of helpers (a total of £117 profit for village funds was made just on the barbecue).

By 6pm most of the stragglers had wobbled their way back to the King’s Arms where the day was pronounced a tremendous success. Well done to organiser John Dovey and all who helped on the day.

Now it’s time to collect all the sponsor money and hand it in to Village Weekend treasurer, Keith Matthews (347848). There’s still a large sum of money outstanding and we need this collected before we can announce the total sum raised.

Meanwhile, keep your spokes straight and your wheels well-oiled for next year’s jaunt.

Not to be outdone, the under-9s have played some exceptional football throughout the season and have finished in the top three of the second division to gain promotion to Division One, while the under-8s can count a memorable 2-1 victory over local rivals Marham among their achievements this season. Congratulations to all the teams and their managers: David Wilson (U8s) Simon Bellas (U9s) and John Green (U12s).
