Welcome to the Christmas edition of Shouldham News. This year, 2011, has been a momentous and largely successful one for the village. As well as the parade of traditional annual events – the spring Bike Ride, the Village Week- end fete and barbecue, the church’s summer Flower Festival – we staged a memorable celebration of the Royal Wedding in April, complete with stalls, a communal picnic and sports events on the Green. This year has also seen the opening of the Chalk & Cheese, giving Shouldham a village shop for the first time in over 15 years, and also providing a bar and a restaurant. We’ve had several coffee mornings and tea parties through the year too, raising money for very worthwhile causes: thanks to a group of villagers who give freely of their spare time. The news from the King’s Arms is less encouraging. As Shouldham News goes to press it stands empty. This edition carries a letter from one villager with suggestions as to how we can keep our village pub running as an essential asset to the community, but the newsletter welcomes a debate on the subject. Are we willing to lose the King’s Arms, or are we prepared to band together to save this centuries-old village institution? Shouldham News is about to enter its 10th year in its current format, but it wouldn’t be able to exist without the dedicated team of people who help pro- duce and distribute it. So, the editor would like to raise a cup of Christmas cheer to Emma Gibson, for her admirable designing and layout skills, to John Dovey, our inestimable advertisement manager, and to our tireless band of de- liverers: Mick Bentley, Helen Brown, John Dovey, Keith Matthews, John McGourty, Linda Peake, Sarah Ryan, Cas Sawyer and Julie Walkey. Finally, we would like to wish all our readers a merry Christmas and a happy 2012.

Welcome to the Christmas edition of Shouldham News. This year, 2011, has been a momentous and largely successful one for the village. As well as the parade of traditional annual events – the spring Bike Ride, the Village Week-end fete and barbecue, the church’s summer Flower Festival – we staged a memorable celebration of the Royal Wedding in April, complete with stalls, a communal picnic and sports events on the Green.

Shouldham News is about to enter its 10th year in its current format, but it wouldn’t be able to exist without the dedicated team of people who help pro-duce and distribute it. So, the editor would like to raise a cup of Christmas cheer to Emma Gibson, for her admirable designing and layout skills, to John Dovey, our inestimable advertisement manager, and to our tireless band of de-liverers: Mick Bentley, Helen Brown, John Dovey, Keith Matthews, John McGourty, Linda Peake, Sarah Ryan, Cas Sawyer and Julie Walkey. Finally, we would like to wish all our readers a merry Christmas and a happy 2012.

In memory of Rachel

We raised £600 for Myeloma UK at the ‘Tea, Cake & Chat’ afternoon on Friday November 18th at Shouldham School, in memory of Rachel Nelson. Thanks to all the helpers, espe-

cially Rachel’s family, Reg and Gill Button, Duncan Nelson and Laura, and Emma Nixon for the fabulous raffle. Also to the school for its support, and for loaning us the Eco Lab. Claire Atterbury

This year the service was led by Churchwarden Brian, who spoke briefly about the effect of war within his own family and read John McCrae’s 1915 poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’. The service con-cluded with the Act of Remembrance around the War Memorial. We most gratefully acknowledge the kind attendance of the Royal Air Force contingent from Marham – immaculately turned out, as always – and Bill Wells who sounded the Last Post and Reveille. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the RAF, the British Legion and its Women’s Section. The two minutes’ silence was duly observed, and the bells were rung half-muffled in keeping with the solemnity of the day.

Hello, Claire Atterbury here. For those that do not know me, I live in Foresters Row and have an 11 year-old Jack Russell bitch called Mabel. Occasionally I need to go away for work, and for various extremely good reasons Mabel’s regular carers have had to stop. I need someone who would be able to have her occasionally either in the week for a couple of nights, or overnight at occasional weekends four to five times per year. I would be happy to pay for bed and board. At 11 she really can-not start going to kennels. If you could help, please ring me on 347552 or email [email protected]. Many thanks from me and my hound.

TV interference Experiencing continual TV interference at my property in the Hallfields estate (loss of sound/blocky pictures/freeze frame, etc), I contacted a digital installer and he sent a representative to my property to investi-gate. He found that the fault was not that of the transmission station, but

determined the interference was local in Shouldham. I was then advised that if the interference continued, I could contact a named government department, which would send a tracker van (at a cost of approximately £60) to locate the interference and would prosecute the offender. I therefore state that this is what will happen if the inter-ference continues, and also that I will be claiming all my out-of-pocket expenditure from whoever is found to be responsible. A Bulmer

Waste, recycling & village library services

A message from Borough Councillor Lori Allen

October/November have been a busy time within the Borough Council, with the Recy-cling Task Group meeting regularly to discuss ways of increasing recycling, reducing waste and finding an alternative to incineration. The new waste management contract will begin in April 2013 and will see several changes to the current service, including alternate weekly collections of green and black bins and an additional weekly collection of kitchen waste. King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council will provide you with a kitchen caddy and outdoor container.

An education officer will be employed at least six months prior to the start of the new contract, to educate residents on what can be put into each bin. Training will be ex-tended to councillors, to enable them to work with their local community to ensure as much as possible is recycled.

The Borough Council will also work with companies supplying battery-operated equip-ment, to promote increased battery recycling facilities.

Currently, West Norfolk is the second worst performer in Norfolk for recycling. Just 37.7 per cent of waste is recycled, 13.4 per cent of which is brown bin garden waste. The above changes will ensure that at least 50 per cent of waste is recycled.

The type of waste that currently goes into the green recycling bin is also being reviewed, and it is hoped that hard plastics will become easier to recycle – although it is still far better to source packaging that is compostable, where possible.

On a different issue entirely, I recently attended the West Norfolk Disability Forum and listened to a presentation by Linda Tree, West Norfolk’s Community Librarian. Linda would like to hear from anyone interested in attending a village group, such as a remi-niscence group. The idea is that the group would be informal, a great way of socialising within the local community, and would help reduce social isolation, which is becoming an increasing problem given the cuts to public transport, the cost of travel and reduced facilities such as day care. If you would like to find out more, please contact Linda Tree on 01553 772568 or email [email protected].

If you require any further information on the above, or have a Borough Council-related issue, please do not hesitate to contact Lori Allen on 01366 348238, or write to 2 Alpha Cottages, The Green, Shouldham PE33 0BY, or email [email protected].

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Lori Allen

Most come from the King’s Lynn area, but others travel from as far afield as Milton Keynes, Norwich and St Albans. We per-form a wide and varied repertoire, which includes sacred, contemporary and popular pieces. Our Music Director is Michael Kibblewhite, a very experienced and inspirational conductor who puts together exciting programmes for our concerts.

We have had some very good reviews from the Lynn News; ‘a remarkable concert and tremendous evening’, ‘electrifying, tear-jerking – sensational’, but we wish to reach a wider audience and persuade them that we are worth coming to see. Hence we are contacting all the villages surrounding our next concert venue, in the hope that we can entice people to come and see us.

Our next concert is titled ‘Come to the Music’ and takes place in Downham Market’s Methodist Church on Sunday 5th February at 7pm. Tickets are £10 (£8 conc). For more information, please visit our website www.corostellante.org.uk

Marie Curie Blooming Great Tea Party The editor would like to apologise for inadver-tently omitting this article (once again!) from

the last edition of the newsletter.

Jane, Jenny and Cas would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made their ‘Blooming Great Tea Party’, on a slightly wet and windy day in July, another wonderfully successful event. Special thanks go to all our generous cake-makers, and donators of raffle prizes. A special vote of thanks to the ‘lads’, once again, for their expert marquee erection and dismantling skills! This year we raised a fantastic £350.40, which has been gratefully received by Marie Curie Cancer Care, to help nurse terminally ill people. Thank you all again, and we look forward to seeing you on the Green next year. Cas Sawyer
