On September 12, during a tank dedication ceremony, Operations Supervisor Gary McNatt reinforced the pipeline safety message as he welcomed attendees from the Kern County Board of Supervisors, state law enforcement and emer-gency response representatives, state One Call Center officials and other guests.

At the event, a two-time Olympic kayaker named Cliff Meidl shared a story of how he was nearly killed at age 20, working as an apprentice plumber, when he hit three unmarked high-voltage electrical cables sending nearly 30,000 volts of electricity though his body and severely injuring his knees. He is now a damage prevention am-bassador spreading the word about safe-digging prac-tices and the importance of calling 811. McNatt said, “Shell Pipeline’s efforts to promote pipeline safety and to protect our pipelines from damage are key to the safety of the communities we operate in and to our employees and contractors.”

7th Annual Safety Day Event in Houston

On June 19th, Shell Pipeline hosted the 7th Annual Safety Day Event for the Supply & Distribution organiza-tion based in the Houston Central Business District, encompassing some 285 personnel from Pipeline, Supply, RMO, Portfolio, M&A, Finance, Product Quality, Engineering, HR, IT, Value Chain Optimization, and Contracting & Procurement. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response rate, the Safety Day Event was conducted in two sessions & moved off-site to the Hyatt Exhibit Hall to accommodate all the attendees.

Building on the strong foundation of personal safety, the “Time for Safety” theme was expanded to include a focus on the safety of others. With this in mind, the Safety Day Planning Team put together a program that in-cluded a brief evolution of Safety Day, the Group Piper Alpha video, a personal safety journey sharing by Arthur Bailey, and a “safety commercials” competition with themes including ALARP, chronic unease, barrier thinking, intervention, weak signals, mind traps, and the 12 LSR’s. The event wrapped-up with an award ceremony, raffle drawing for an iPad Mini, and a “call to action” for employees beyond Safety Day.

Attendee feedback on the Safety Day event was generally very positive. Overall, the event seemed to strike the right balance between serious and fun content. High praise went to Arthur Bailey and Kevin Nichols for their personal safety shar-ing. Donovan Carrigan commented that “Kevin Nichols made a great impact on how I will imple-ment safety in my personal life.” Sheila Dotson found the “personal safety-related story by Arthur Bailey very powerful and moving.” Regarding the safety commercials activity, Peter Boyd felt that “the team that put this together did a great job of utilizing technology. It took a typically drab type of session and got everyone engaged.” Addition-ally, Sarah Lunsford commented that “the variety and creativity were well expressed and all teams clearly articulated the safety message.”

The North America HEMP Team recently met to perform a look back on the imple-mentation of barrier thinking and the ap-plication of the HEMP process within North America which began in 2010. Part of the overall HEMP process is the implementation of the site Operating HEMP. The look back included a review of what went well during site Operating HEMP reviews, learning’s of how the process can be improved, and a look to the future as to how to extend the process of HEMP into our daily work. As of the end of September 2013, the site Operating HEMP template has been utilized in over 60 Terminals, Pipeline Systems & Projects across North America. Mel Duplantis commented “we’ve come a long way during the last 4 years and the credit goes to the site leadership and subject matter experts who participated and invested significant time and energy to assure an understanding of the threats we face each day. Through the implementation of the site Operating HEMP we can assure that the proper barriers are in place and ready to work when needed.”

In October 1993 I found myself laid off from General Electric Co. and badly needed to find another career path. I found an advertisement for training in the field of Process Plant Operator that was put on by the Regional Occupational Program of Richmond Ca. Once I had com-pleted the training program Shell Oil Company had posted a massive hiring effort to staff their new Clean Fuels Project.

In April of 1994, I stood in line at the Eagles Hall in Martinez California for a chance at 1 of 500 applications for employment, I went through the process and was offered an interview. A few weeks later I was offered a posi-tion of Operator Trainee. I started my career with Shell on July 5, 1994 and went to work in the Flexicoker unit of Operations Central in Martinez where I worked my way up to Process board operator. After 7 years I sought another change in my life, namely the prospect of becoming a controller with the Consoli-dated Control Center in Houston Texas. I was offered a position as Controller trainee in June of 2001 and after my initial training period I was assigned to the Basin Console which operated from Jal New Mexico through West Texas and into Cushing Oklahoma.

Not long after I certified, these assets were sold and I was then transferred to the Southern California console where I soon certified and worked for around 6 years.

My next change would come when I was moved to the GOM Offshore console where I have worked until the latter part of 2012 when I pursued another change in my employment status. I was transferred to the Control Center’s Technical Staff in October of 2012 where I have been since then.

During my tenure with Shell I have experienced numerous changes. From working outdoors in all types of weather, experiencing many changes in the type of work schedule, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in December of 2003, which caused an extreme change in my diet and health needs, to working in an office setting.

Through all of this I have found one thing that stands true, regardless of the location I have been assigned, I have enjoyed the people that I have worked with. Shell really does have a “Family” of employees who take pride in their work and community, that celebrate and recognize the “Ups” in life and will be there to help when things are not going too well. There are always opportunities offered that can enhance ones career path if one takes the initiative and faces “Change” in a positive light.

Getting to Know...Karen McCray

Karen McCray is the US Maintenance Manager and has been with SPLC for almost a year. Prior to joining Shell, she worked for Dow Chemical for 11 years and Lyondell Chemical and Pipeline for the last 15 years. Karen is married to her husband of 25 years, Darrell Smith. They have three grown daughters, one granddaughter and a grandson on the way.

Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I also went to New Mexico State Universi-ty and have a BS Chemical Engineering.

Hobbies: I don’t really have any hobbies but I enjoy working on our ranch after work and on the weekends. I like riding horses and doing construction projects.

Personal accomplishments: I am proud of my family and the ranch that we have built over the last 25 years.

What is your favorite memory at Shell? I have only been with SPLC a short time but I most enjoy working with the Manag-ers, Supervisors, Techs and Engineers to resolve issues and improve perfor-mance.

What is your dream job? I really enjoy the job that I have but I believe my dream job would be one where I worked entirely for myself. You get to make all the deci-sions, take all the risk but also get all the rewards when you are self employed.

What is something that most people don’t know about you? Several years ago, I raised Fallow deer on our ranch. One of the bucks tried to kill me and needless to say, I don’t raise Fallow deer anymore.

What are your plans for the future? I plan to work out my career at SPLC and retire to my ranch.

Finance Having Fun: Project PiperWritten by: “Team Aquarius”

Have you heard of Project Piper? Is it the latest and greatest project on Shell Pipeline’s horizon. If the answer is no, it is a Finance team building effort that was created by some of Shell Pipeline’s Finance leadership team (Steven Abram and Susan Murphrey) and HR (Danielle Brown).

The idea behind the project was to foster ca-maraderie amongst Shell Pipeline’s Finance team. Each of the folks on Shell Pipeline’s Finance team has their respective areas of responsibility and sometimes these areas don’t interact with each other. The areas of operation are purposefully separated due to regulatory laws such that each area has their own Finance support.

A total of 14 Finance folks have been split up into three different teams. Each team has three months to build a pipeline. A pipeline is built by completing 25 different activities throughout the three months timeline (only three activities are allowed per week). A piece of pipe is earned each time a team completes an activity. The activities range from coming up with a team name to contacting a Shell Pipeline Engineer for a fun fact. So, if you get a call from Finance for a Project Piper activity, you will be helping that team win this challenge! The winner will be announced in the 4th quarter. We will find out if the Y-Knot, Smart Pigs, or Aquarius pipeline is the winner!

Shell Carson Hosts Los Angeles County Fire Department

In August, the Shell Carson Distribution Facility (Shell Carson) hosted the Los Angeles County Fire Depart-ment for a two day meeting. The first day consisted of a tour of the inside of a clean and empty gasoline float-ing roof tank and a test of the fire water system within the tank farm. The second day focused on an emer-gency drill with the assistance of 25 fire personnel and the deployment of several fire trucks and pumpers.

Shell Carson is a supply and distribution facility and it does not have its own fire brigade. In the event of a fire emergency, the Los Angeles County Fire Depart-ment would be deployed to handle the situation.

Lisa Barfield, Shell Carson Operations Manager, said “It is important we show Los Angeles County Fire De-partment our operations first hand and we fully under-stand the roles everyone plays in a fire emergency. I enjoyed building our working relationship and improv-ing our lines of communication. It will ultimately make us successful in reaching a common goal of keeping the community safe.”

Congratulations to Lisa Barfield, Tony Fernandez, Whitney Mativa, Don Palencia, Toni Atwell, Rick Walck, John Dompke and Facility Manager Mike Huang for their involvement in the meetings. Also, a thank you to Los Angeles County Fire Department Station’s 10, 36, 105, 116, 127 and 236 for joining Shell Carson in help-ing to keep our operations safe and our emergency response protocols up to date.

Shell Pipeline Observes National 811 Day at Full ThrottlePresentations, proclamations, promotions -- even pitches -- advance pipeline safetyShell Pipeline Company LP (Shell Pipeline) employees rallied behind “National 811 Day” (August 11) and participated in celebrations at company facilities in Texas, California and Louisiana. Shell Pipeline’s media outreach reinforced the Call-Before-You-Dig message to Texas and Louisiana baseball fans. Mean-while, local officials amplified the cause by is-suing proclamations recognizing National 811 Day in their cities and counties.

National 811 Day emphasizes the importance of dialing 811 before any digging project to have underground utility lines marked. For Shell Pipeline, 811 Day was an opportunity to place pipeline safety at the top-of-mind for both internal and external audiences. The ef-fort started with distributing the summer issue of Shell Shares to southern California employ-ees and external stakeholders. The publication prominently featured a National 811 Day adver-tisement to encourage viewers to call before you dig.

Greg Smith, Shell Pipeline President, remind-ed employees about 811 Day in an internal e-mail and motivated them to spread the word far and wide. He said, “August 11 serves as a good reminder for us to take the time to inform our family, friends, colleagues, and the public to call 811 a few days before digging in order to identify the approximate location of under-ground facilities.”

Marking the day

Company celebrations took place August 12 in Carson, Calif.; in St. James, Houma, Norco, and Gibson, La.; and in Houston, Pasadena, Port Arthur and Mont Belvieu, Texas. Shell Pipeline employees wore their 811 t-shirts, listened to presentations championing pipeline safety, and enjoyed cupcakes decorated with the Shell and Call-Before-You-Dig logos. In Bakersfield, Ca-lif., employees placed the Call-Before-You-Dig logo on Tank 102 to exemplify the significance of calling before you begin any excavation. Public officials, emergency responders, exca-vators, one-call centers and media representa-tives were invited to an official tank dedication ceremony on September 12.

Several mayors and government officials proclaimed National 811 Day in their areas and acknowledged Shell Pipeline for pro-moting safe digging practices. Additionally, Shell Pipeline received proclamations from Kern County and the city of Bakersfield in California; from Lafourche, St. James, Plaquemine and Terrebonne Parishes in Louisiana; and from the cities of Deer Park, Pasadena and Port Arthur in Texas.

Hitting home runs in awareness

Shell Pipeline leveraged 811 Day to reach out to sports fans. On August 3, Louisiana-area Shell employees attended the New Or-leans Zephyrs baseball game, where Smith threw out the ceremonial first pitch. The safe-digging logo appeared on the stadi-um’s large video screen and the announcer helped drive home the Call 811 message.

For the Houston Astros versus Texas Rang-ers game, Shell Pipeline’s media outreach resulted in a slew of interviews featuring Common Ground Alliance (CGA) Presi-dent Bob Kipp on Fox Sports Southwest TV, Rangers Radio and KBME-AM 790 Ra-dio. Shell also arranged for Kipp to throw the first pitch at the Astros-Rangers game. Shell Pipeline partners with nonprofit orga-nization CGA, which provides strategic di-rection and public education to protect un-derground utility lines and the people who dig near them.

Through its association with America’s Pipe-line Industry, Shell Pipeline helped spon-sor commercials that reached more than 85 percent of America’s Spanish-speaking audience. Call 811 commercials saturated Mexican 40-plus regional and Spanish adult contemporary and news radio stations. They also appeared on the “Republica Deportiva” television sports show and a televised Liga MX soccer game, which is hugely popular among Mexican viewers.

Additional commercials aired during nation-al and cable network sports, news and talk shows on ESPN, NBC and CBS through-out the day, reaching millions of viewers, heightening public awareness, and capping off a memorable National 811 Day.

Final Results: 2013 Mark Keller Memorial Charity Basketball TournamentThank you to everyone who contributed, participated, and vol-unteered their time for the 9th annual SPLC Mark Keller Me-morial charity basketball tournament. It proved to be another wonderful event with several close games played and great camaraderie among all the teams.

This year, the Lubricants Slubes defended their title and cap-tured their fifth straight championship by defeating the S&D Playground Legends in the title game. S&D jumped out to an early lead but could not hold on as the Slubes took over in the second half. The coveted trophy will return to the Penzoil tower for yet another year. In other action, the Control Cen-ter/GOM Over Shorts won the consolation bracket in a hard fought game against the Retail Fuels squad. A special con-gratulations goes out to these winning teams! Also, Mikal Lewis of the Lubes team along with Tze of the Playground Legends captured co-MVP honors for their strong, sometimes dazzling play.

Most importantly, you were able to raise over $5,000 for M.D. Anderson Cancer Research in memory of Mark Keller, bring-ing our total donation amount to over $40,000 since we started this event. To show their appreciation, MD Anderson present-ed Shell/Motiva a plaque recognizing your generous contribu-tions. During the presentations, Kellie Keller also expressed her sincere appreciation for the donation in Mark’s name and for continuing to keep Mark in our memories. Further, Shell and Motiva were recognized by the Houston Parks and Recre-ation Department for donating much needed scoreboard con-trollers for use in their Fonde gym.

Again, I appreciate everyone making this a successful and truly meaningful event. Let’s really step it up next year as the tournament will reach the 10th anniversary milestone. Some special events will be planned. And remember, it’s not too ear-ly to start recruiting and practicing for next year. The Slubes must be dethroned! ~Peyton Ross
