Shell Participates in Wetlands Planting in Port Fourchon
On April 21, 2017, employees from Shell Oil Company joined the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) to take part in a wetlands planting project on the Port Fourchon ridge and marsh north of Port Fourchon.
The goal of the project was to create sustainable ridge and marsh habitat located along the Bayou Cochon area. To make the area more resilient to storms and flooding, and create habitat for neotropical songbirds that reside in Louisiana or migrate through the Mississippi Flyway, Shell volunteers planted 398 beneficial native woody species and herbaceous plants, including red mulberry, yaupon holly, persimmon, live oak, honeylocust, roughleaf dogwood, wax myrtle, Hercules-club, American beautyberry and hackberry.
“These ridges are like islands in a sea of salt marsh providing critical habitat for the Neotropical migratory birds on their long journeys each spring and fall,” said Matt Benoit, BTNEP Habitat Restoration Coordinator. “In the 2017 Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) Master Plan for Coastal Restoration, project types such as ridge restoration and marsh creation play a critical part in not only creating new land, but in providing a way to improve wave and storm attenuation features for the local communities.”
In addition to providing sweat equity to the project, volunteers were shown a presentation about the upcoming Port Fourchon-Mars Pipeline Wetlands Project and given a tour of existing port facilities and activities.
In 2016, Shell Oil Company and the BTNEP came together to form the SMART program in this estuarine complex that encompasses the 4.2 million acres of wetlands, ridges, forests, farmlands and communities between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya River Basins in

southeast Louisiana. SMART stands for Saving Marshes And Ridges Together. The SMART program, funded by a $1 million contribution from Shell, takes plants grown at Nicholls State University Farm in Thibodaux, LA, to be planted on newly created ridges and surrounding marshes in lower Lafourche (Port Fourchon Ridge and Marsh and Port Fourchon-Mars Pipeline Wetland Projects) and Plaquemines (Tiger Pass/Spanish Pass Ridge and Marsh Project, and Bayou Dupont and Grand Liard Ridge and Marsh Projects) Parishes.
SMART also creates volunteer opportunities for the public, locally and nationally, as well as partners joining the project from companies like Shell. For more information on BTNEP and its volunteer program, visit www.BTNEP.org.

Colex Celebrates National Safe Digging Month and 10 Years of Keeping the Community Safe
A 90 ton crane was used to pull Unit 4 off of the skid and
load it onto atransport truck.
In honor of National Safe Digging Month, SPLC’s Public Awareness 811 Team hosted a pipeline safety meeting. Jereme Havard, ROW Tech at Nederland, gave a heartfelt presentation about his role in the community, working with stakeholders on damage prevention and how safe digging practices make a difference. Phil Barker highlighted the upcoming outreach events planned for 2017. The team created a fun quiz on National Safe Digging Month facts and prizes were awarded. The meeting provided an opportunity for employees to share ideas and good practices to improve pipeline safety.
Phil Barker, Public Awareness/Damage Prevention Administrator, recently visited with Hughes Elementary School’s 3rd and 4th graders and Kubacak Elementary School’s 3rd graders. Students and teachers had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of Calling 811 to prevent damage to underground pipelines and utilities, pipeline safety and the important role pipelines play in our everyday lives SPLC’s public awareness school program was developed to provide safety information to everyone who lives or works near a pipeline. Hughes Elementary School is located near the Texas Bay Area Dry Gas Pipeline and Kubacak Elementary School is located near the Texas Propylene Pipeline.
Students enjoyed watching Common Ground Alliance’s pirate-themed video about the importance of protecting our resources below the ground. They also learned about:
=What is a pipeline=How pipelines affect you=How to locate a pipeline=What is transported through a pipeline=How to recognize a pipeline leak and who to call=What you should do before you begin any digging project in your yard
All students went home with a “goodie bag” and parents received pipeline safety information. To conclude the presentation, students had the opportunity to win prizes if they answered questions about the information presented. In addition to the presentation, Phil Barker presented both Hughes and Kubacak Elementary Schools with a donation to help purchase needed school supplies.

Getting to know...Peyton RossPeyton Ross is a Facilities Manager, Tx-Midwest and has been with Shell for 29.5 years. Peyton and his wonderful wife, Rhett, have been married for almost 26 years. They have three children, Kaitlyn (22), Peyton (19), and Cole (17). Kaitlyn recently graduated from College of Charleston with a Communications degree, and she will be heading to the Cordon Bleu School in Paris in the fall to study to be a sommelier. Most pipeliners, like Peyton, probably don’t know what that is. He just recently learned it is a professional wine taster! His son, Peyton, is now a freshman at LSU studying Finance, and Cole will be a senior at St. Thomas High School in Houston. Cole will be Peyton’s last chance to possibly have another engineer in the family. They also have a 10-year-old King Charles Spaniel named Lucky. He sleeps in their bed and eats at the table. While she would never admit it, Peyton believes Rhett may love that dog more than she loves him!
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Amory, a rural town of about 8,000 people in northeast Mississippi. We were very close to Tupelo, birthplace of Elvis Presley. Back then, all there was to do in Amory was cruise the Sonic parking lot in your parents’ station wagon. I first attended college at Mississippi State in Starkville, MS, before getting smart and transferring to LSU my junior year (best decision ever because that’s where I met Rhett).
Hobbies: When our kids were younger, I really enjoyed coaching youth sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, and football. Today, I play basketball at our church with a group of guys called the Fat Dads. The name speaks for itself. I’m not sure if this is a hobby, but Rhett and I love New Orleans and have ridden in many Mardi Gras parades, including Iris and Endymion. Finally, I enjoy cutting my grass with a vintage Craftsman push lawnmower, and I hope to win “Yard of the Month” one day.
Personal accomplishments: I am proud to be a graduate of LSU, ranked above Ohio State in both academics and athletics. I am also proud to have coached my son’s 3rd grade basketball team to a double overtime championship victory against a heavily favored rival years ago. It may seem like a minor accomplishment, but I still have the local newspaper article framed on the wall, right next to my LSU diploma! It was definitely the highlight of my coaching career.
What is your favorite memory at Shell? I will always remember running the annual SPLC charity basketball tournament. What started out as a simple three-team tournament in 2005, mainly due to trash talking, between SPLC Engineering, the Control Center, and Distribution, grew into a highly competitive eight team tournament with multiple business units represented. In 2007, we renamed the tournament the “Mark Keller Memorial Tournament” in memory of a wonderful SPLC employee, competitor, and friend, who passed away after a battle with cancer in March 2007. He was the inaugural tournament MVP. With the help of many folks and matching donations, we were able to raise nearly $50,000 for M.D. Anderson cancer research over the 10-year run of the tournament.
What is your dream job? I’ve always wanted to own a small neighborhood hardware store, like Howard Cunningham in Happy Days. When I have few minutes to spare on the weekends, I go to the local hardware store down the street and always find stuff I need.
What is something that most people don’t know about you? I collect shot glasses. I get one whenever I visit a new place. Unfortunately, they are tucked away in a closet now because I have no place to put them, but hopefully I’ll get a display case soon. When I get old, I figure it will be fun to recall all the places I’ve been.
What are your plans for the future? I work with a bunch of great people and really enjoy what I do, so I plan on continuing to work for a while. When I do decide to retire, Rhett would like to get a place near the bay or beach and cruise around in a boat. I personally would like
to buy an RV and travel across the country (collecting more shot glasses), but Rhett will likely win that battle. Maybe I’ll even open up a hardware store.
Additional Comments: I feel very blessed to have a wonderful family and a career with Shell Pipeline, i.e., my second family. I can remember my first day at Shell like it was yesterday. Time flies.

Pipeliner’s Splash
13th Annual Houston Firefighter’s Golf Classic
Nearly seven years ago, the local work force at Port Arthur Product Station (PAPS), started in on a typical conversation about who the best fisherman was. After numerous lies and false narratives of greatness finished up, several conversations were held to put this into action, and with management approval, the 1st Annual Pipeliner’s Splash was created. What started as a small gathering of employees, family, and friends, has grown significantly over the years and now includes folks from Colex, downtown Houston, Nederland, and Mont Belvieu, collectively. Earlier this year, Jereme Havard spoke to Peyton Ross about this event and he challenged the group to see if they could donate some of the prize money, which is paid in per person, to go towards a charitable organization or event. As life sometimes goes, an opportunity fell into our lap that fit the profile perfectly and it was to sponsor two kid fishing events at a local fishing club in Port Arthur called the SALT club. With portions of the entry money going towards this goal, each entrant had direct influence on helping children start and continue fishing through the avenue Shell Pipeline Company had created. We sponsored a kid’s category in May that gave every child that entered the event a rod and reel and trophies for those weighing in any fish. In September of this year, Shell is also sponsoring a kid fish day on Crystal Beach, providing any child who wants to fish a rod and reel and bait for the day. Collectively, through the money raised from entry fees of those fishing the 7th Annual Pipeliner’s Splash, Shell employees, family, and friends made a donation of $1000.00 to the SALT club to kids fishing. This was a huge success by all involved and hopefully we can continue this for years to come. So, if you’re looking for an opportunity to meet some fellow Shell employees and friends, cuss and discuss fishing stories, and help out kids fishing in the process, join us next year for great time and great event. We enjoy giving back to the local community and being part of something that helps shape the future of children lives in a positive manner.

As part of Shell Pipeline Company’s partnership with the Houston Fire Department, we were proud to be one of the sponsors of the recent 13th Annual Houston Firefighters’ Charity Golf Classic. This event helps to support Houston firefighters during times of medical distress. Funds raised help Houston firefighters and their families by easing the burden of trying to cover extra costs associated with a lengthy hospital stay.
